This location is home for the naturalists, poets, romantics, artists and especially made for the lovebirds. We came here for a friend's intimate wedding on a Sunday night. The setting, ambiance, vibes: everything was perfect and incredible. It's the absolute perfect location for a getaway, staycation, special occasion, anniversary, wedding, you name it. It's of course a very unique place for unique people that love to appreciate food, nature, art and the beautiful surroundings in this gorgeous hotel and event space. We dined in their smaller/private/event space where we enjoyed a beautiful 3 course, slow paced, farm to table, meal (and experience). We enjoyed the castelfranco radicchio as our first (which was absolutely delish with apple, candy roasted squash and pepitas). Followed by the ricotta cavatelli (all handmade) with local mushrooms, salsa verde and parmesan. I was super excited about the salsa verde and wish I could've tasted it more. For dessert, I got to mix match and try with my hot date the squash cake with coconut ice cream and chocolate cremeux which was absolutely incredible! Overall, we had such an amazing experience and can't wait to be back for another special occasion or intimate dinner with my hubby. We had a superlative experience at both the hotel and the restaurant. The accommodations were cute, comfortable, well-designed, and reasonably spacious. Slightly low water pressure in the shower but not unworkable. Comfortable bed. We thoroughly enjoyed the complimentary yoga class, which was held in a stunning chapel-like wellness center. It has a magical and special light and vibe. Feels brand new in quality but ancient in spirit. Breakfast at the restaurant was phenomenal. We especially liked the yogurt's consistency and very subtle tartness. Diner at the restaurant was similarly fantastic. Excellent service. The appetizers were huge. Arguably too large. Eg two of us were only able to eat half the cauliflower served to us. Highly recommend the duck; it was great! I am picky about wine and really loved their glass list. The French Chardonnay in particular wowed me. They had free bikes which we didn't have time to use to check out the nearby bike trail. The complimentary brownies were rich and luxurious. I've been to troutbeck around three times now once for each meal and I'm just here to say every time I come I'm blown away. Not only is the food so fresh with the different combination of ingredients complimenting the main dishes in so many ways but the staff is exceptional. Their warm attitude complimented with the welcoming ambiance of the restaurant makes it one of the most enjoyable meals so far. For breakfast I recommend getting the bagel with trout gravlax or the soft scrambled eggs, both incredible. For lunch I recommend the young lettuce as an appetizer and you can't go wrong with the smash burger as your main. For dinner I couldn't recommend the trout enough, the combination of fresh colorful vegetables with the locally sourced trout adds for a combination you'll be dreaming about. read more

My chicken sat in something that looked like someone's leftover green juice from breakfast. We had heard good things about a chef at the restaurant and choose to celebrate a milestone anniversary dining there last weekend. We were seated at a two-top by the window across from the door, what my Mr. called the second least desirable spot other than the two-top by the door itself. It was a blustery day and we had our puffy down winter coats which we hung on the backs of our chairs. There were two other parties seated at the far end of the room, no one had their coats. Later when we exited and passed the host station, we saw them taking coats to a coat closet and we weren't clear on why the hosts or hostess had not taken our coats on arrival. Things began looking up when a server brought two gratis glasses of champagne, a nice touch. Other parties of two arrived after us and were seated at the very nice corner banquettes; it would have been an additional nicety to have been seated there as well. The cranberry sour I'd ordered was good, lamb carpaccio, okay. The Aleppo salt was a bit too spicy for him, although he did enjoy the beet margarita and burrata brussels sprouts. The sourdough and wine were nice. He had the malbec and I had the pinot noir. The steelhead trout temperature was very, very rare, near sashimi. The duck breast was not at a pleasant temperature at all; he sent it back asking that it be brought up, and he rarely sends anything back. He cut me a piece of duck to try when it was returned. I'd expected tender meat with a crisp skin, the fatty edge to melt and render in my mouth. Regrettably, it did not. Rather, the duck was cool and chewy, think narwhal muktuk. We stayed for another drink and dessert, hoping to extend our weekend's romantic mood begun elsewhere. The Madeira wine was enjoyable as was the olive oil cake. The young lady busing the table and serving the dishes asked a number of times if there was anything further she could do for us. She did so pleasantly, and I'm sure meant well, but more training would have helped her to remove the empty plates and pour sparkling water into empty glasses without her having to break into our conversation repeatedly to ask. We do like to eat and drink well and don't mind paying for it. On whole, the low luxe experience and uneven hospitality here were not good value for money. Recently worked a wedding hosted here and was thoroughly blown away by the level of hospitality and professionalism shown by the staff. I'm used to babysitting a venue (especially a venue with in-house catering) and the team at Troutbeck is ON IT. Also, everyone is super nice, which is a pleasant change from blunt and dismissive interactions with vendors in the city. The food is also top-tier. I'm personally not a huge outdoorsy person (I'm a city mouse through and through), but if you're considering having your wedding here at this gorgeous historic property, go for it. A truly magical place. We are still here and staying at room 309 and our experience has been nothing short of magical. Joy and whoever is at the front desk truly make their guests feel special. They've stopped phone calls they were on to see if we were ok. The chef and food managers like Megan treat their guest like royalty. From the moment we checked in they were able to get us a wonderful room early. We are here to celebrate our anniversary and there was a wonderful hand written note from Joy and a welcome beverage. We had a small issue with one of the chairs in the room and Nick promptly exchanged it for us. Our first night we had dinnrr at the barn for their labor day BBQ cookout and it was fabulous. The food was fresh and delicious. Their seemed like quite a few folks there that were not spending the night but were local members. The next day we reserved the gazebo and took out lunch from the main restaurant. The braised short ribs and cheeseburger were delicious. They packaged it in a cute picnic basket for us. We were able to finish our lunch by the running stream and take cat naps in the hammock. We made a short trip for ice cream in the afternoon to fudgeys and highly recommend them. For dinner we had reservations at the main restaurant and ordered the foccacia, scallops, Einhorn and seafood tagliatelle everything takes amazing and fresh. The cocktails were also worth mentioning we had the yuzu billionaire lemonade and the melon cocktail. The waitress was friendly and attentive. We then booked camp fire smores and enjoyed the evening stoking the fire and enjoying our sweet treats. This place is truly magical the decor and landscaping is tastefully and subtly luxe. If that picturesque accommodations and grounds don't make you feel special then the staff truly do iw ish I could take them home with me. We will undoubtedly enjoy our last few days. Let me begin by saying I would give the grounds surrounding the hotel 5 stars. Just beautiful and very relaxing. However, we went there for the restaurant and did not stay in the hotel. My drink at the bar was excellent and the hostess was lovely, but my husband had the duck which was awful. I had a truffle dish with absolutely no truffle taste whatsoever. I asked the waiter when we were getting ready to leave about the lack of truffle and he said they used a mild variety of truffle which made no sense. The cheese in the risotto was supposed to be truffle as well and had no taste. Very expensive for a totally unsatisfying meal. We were planning to spend our anniversary there and perhaps spend the night, but that won't happen until the restaurant greatly improves. read more

In beautiful Hudson River Valley lies this luxury B&B. I came here on a snowy winter day and drove up to a picturesque romantic winter scene. The library was just as cozy as the pictures and our room was huge. We had a delicious dinner and I would highly recommend the restaurant on site. Things I did not like: - there is nothing to do in the winter here. It was too cold to bike, the pool is outdoors and the gym has not been built yet. - there is a very large staff here and the small areas including the library are busy with foot traffic. It is really not ideal for quiet reading since someone is always walking by. - I wish the room had more amenities - cozy tub or fireplace. It was bare. read more

The place revisited after 30 years It used to be the place to go for a fancy dinner. Somehow we had no chance to return. It has changed both in appearance and quality. We returned there by accident: it was raining and we were just ready for lunch. It was less than half-empty and the menu was more than limited. The star dish, the trout was still on the menu but tasted only so, so, Sandwiches were below par but still we appreciated what was served. What we did not appreciate was lack of attention to the guests. Checking out required corrections but dessert did not arrive at all. The worse came after lunch. There were plenty of service people around but busy attending to their own affairs. We ( very elderly couple) were left marching to the car in a heavy rain while no-one helped with umbrella. We went to Troutbeck in Amenia. It had just opened its restaurant for outside guests and just in time fir Thanksgiving. It's a beautiful stone home that had several dining rooms and people were spaced apart. The food was delicious. The first course, side dishes and dessert was already determined. The diner only had to decide on a choice of one of two protein.. Turkey breast and braised leg or Steelhead Trout. So my brother got Turkey and I got Trout. We shared. Turkey was moist and tender. We thought we would get a whole leg but it was a portion. When eaten with the first course of soup and salad as well as the side dishes of mashed potato, stuffing, cornbread, Brussel sprouts and dessert, we were plenty full and very satisfied. We actually left a little on the plate unable to eat it all. The soup was extraordinarily good being smooth Koginut squash ( a hybrid of butternut squash and kabocha squash) drizzled with balsamic glaze and crunchy pumpkin seeds. I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Dessert was very good light and airy smooth pumpkin pie and semi Freddy was airy too. Apple tart in was just the perfect combo of sweet and tart. Stayed here for a long weekend in September with my hubby. Really nice estate with pool, gardens, lawn chairs by Creek, and gazebo. There are great hiking trails that are only 15 to 20 drive away from Troutbeck. The food was amazing too. Overheard the waiter saying the chef used to own a Michelin star restaurant in Brooklyn but sadly because of Covid closed the restaurant down. We had dinner there for three nights in a row, everything was excellent, and totally worth 75 dollars for a 3 course Michelin meal! Also must try the pistachio croissant for Sunday brunch. Sooo delicious. Would definitely return for another weekend trip, perhaps in the fall. read more

I searched for months for a perfect location to propose to my girlfriend. With so many options within a 2-3 hour train/car ride from NYC, the task was daunting. Then came Troutbeck. We ended up spending a wonderful weekend there in mid-November. Right off the bat, I knew the location would be perfect given the history of the property, the amenities, charm and the proximity to a bike trail. We stayed in the main house, in room 6. Room 6 is a suite with a living room, bedroom, bathroom and sun room (with an amazing bathtub and view of the property.) Throughout the house are lovely fire places, comfy chairs, and modern but charming and historic decor. The restaurant onsite serves amazing dishes. We had breakfast, brunch and dinner there over the course of the weekend and had absolutely zero complaints about the food itself (get the oysters at dinner and the trout toast at brunch!!!). The cocktails were also yummy and beautifully crafted. We enjoyed the acres of land and the brand new bikes which we rode to downtown Millerton. The pantry and the library were our favorite rooms. But most importantly were the members of their staff. The support from Christina, Andrew, Jen, and Clark to help plan and execute on the proposal was first-rate. The group helped me figure out where on the property I should propose and at what time. They helped me rehearse lines and we all walked through a dress rehearsal of the actual dinner where I proposed. On top of it all, they recorded the engagement so we'll forever be able to look back on our amazing weekend at Troutbeck, where we started the next chapter of our lives. There are multiple cozy common areas with 24 hours access. My favorite part was the pantry and bar that served exclusive cocktails. Last night we celebrated our one year anniversary with Troutbeck and the entire experience from arrival to departure was seamless. For dinner we had House made focaccia with a house whipped ricotta (decadent) followed by a 3 course meal. To start I had the pork belly with crème fraîche, apple slices, radicchio and some sort of apple purée - just wow - tender & flavorful. My husband had the lobster with turnips and a Concord grape concoction - I honestly wouldn't have put the grape with lobster but it was an interesting duo. For the main course I had The saffron infused pasta with shrimp, and the pasta was incredible, nothing beats freshly made pasta. There's so much creativity behind each dish - subtle flavors here and there but everything pairs perfectly. My husband had the trout and he was done before I finished a quarter of my pasta so needless to say it was delicious. Finally we finished up the night with dessert. He had a lemon tart which was so delicate and incredibly flavorful & I had the olive cake, which paired perfectly with my Decaf cappuccino. Everything was fresh house-made and tasted incredible. I just dined at Troutbeck this past weekend. The food was beyond underwhelming. As I chewed on homemade pasta (sunchoke-filled tootsie roll-shaped, with chiles and a white cream sauce - there were 5 pieces) I wondered: Did the chef even taste the food before allowing it to leave the kitchen? Did the chef notice that the twisted ends of the tootsie roll had the texture of a doggie chew? Did the chef notice that it had absolutely no flavor? Was the kitchen so low on supplies that the serving size amounted to 5 pieces of pasta totaling about $7.00/piece? What about the "Japanese" yam, Which, by the way, was not a Japanese yam but a regular old yam sprinkled with popped einkorn that nearly broke my teeth. Where was the oversight? Probably at the register - someone counting the cash and wishing no one would make note of the high school cafeteria food (and not very good cafeteria food) doled out of its kitchen. If there was any redeeming feature about this experience it was our server who was sympathetic. I insisted that we not be comp'd. I just wanted to pay, leave and never return. read more

Fantastic property and staff with good food My wife and I spent 3 days at Troutbeck as a midweek retreat from the city and we had a fantastic stay. I would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet getaway just a short drive from the city. The details 1) The property is beautiful with plenty of space and amenities to feel away from it all. The history of the site has been honored through the thoughtful renovation and the guest rooms felt classic but renewed. 2) The staff was very accommodating during our stay and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. If you enjoy biking the surrounding roads are picturesque and the staff can provide detailed GPX routes. 3) The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and the food exceeded our expectations. I would not describe the menu as "limited" but rather focused on fresh local offerings and we thoroughly enjoyed dinner both nights. We came to Troutbeck 2 nights in early June, 2021 for a relaxing retreat not to mention delicious, farm-to-table menus served up in an elegant country manor. The accommodations (although quite smaller than photos depicted on its website) and public rooms did not disappoint. And the desk staff was pleasant and generously helpful "hosts". What turned out to be a fiasco was the food. Pure disconnect between the promotion of the chef & his menus and the actual dining experience. Either the dishes were burnt or undercooked (sure sign nobody is home in the kitchen, Michelin-starred or not) in all cases... over-priced, not necessarily locally sourced, and in many instances, inedible (even the chocolate sundae was served melted). The maitre-d was officious, boisterous, unhelpful. Go for the lovely natural setting, magical gardens, pool, & accommodating staff. But don't look forward to consistently-prepared delicious meals/cocktails. It seems the place is now focused on hosting large parties/conferences and other money-making schemes. read more

A wonderful place to kick back and relax, especially from Covid craziness. The staff has gone to great lengths to be Covid aware. Everything from check-in to spacing out room occupancy (they are intentionally not filling all the rooms) to physical flow of the interior, to outdoor dining, to disinfecting bicycles, helmets, tennis racquets, etc. It's all done with great care for the safety of the guests and staff The place is kept immaculate, which is always important, but especially now. The guests were all respectful of each other and wore masks, but where there was sufficient distance, mask wearing was relaxed among the guests, which was a relief as we are very attentive to mask wearing in public spaces and appreciated some down time done responsibly. Staff always wore masks. The staff was extremely welcoming, engaging, and attentive. After the first meal, the waitstaff knew our preferences like who liked half and half and who liked decaf and offered them without our needing to ask. The food takes a bit of adventurousness, but was done very well, providing healthy, yet tasty choices that we enjoyed greatly. We overheard orders for buttered pasta for children, so there's that too. Breakfast was very large and we found we didn't usually need lunch and were very happy to wait for dinner. If you want lunch or a snack, the poolside is a great place to have it. They'll order from the kitchen and bring it to you. There are local off-premises options, and we picked up dinner at Santos and ate on the hotel grounds one night for a change of pace. The walled garden was a lovely spot for a walk around, filled with lilies of all different types. Pretty sure one made it to my dinner plate! WiFi was available with a strong signal everywhere on the grounds we tried, including our room. The grounds are beautiful, really stunning. The common interiors were also beautiful as well, down to the furniture and art work. Our room was tastefully and beautifully done (catching the word beautiful enough times?), and we liked connecting our phone to the blue tooth radio to play music. There are a number of walking trails and a biking trail to enjoy the surroundings. Right now there is a limit to the number of events in surrounding areas, again due to the pandemic, but we enjoyed kicking back. We took a ride to Millerton and went antiquing. We stopped by Fudgy's ice cream for some really spectacular Perry's Ice Cream. Would go again in a heartbeat. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay in January. Our room was large and comfortable, most importantly we brought our dogs and they are so dog friendly on the property. Other than the restaurant itself, all other premises were dog friendly and it was especially nice to order drinks from the bar and hang out in the library by the fire pits, playing games and reading. The restaurant was pretty good for the location, definitely trying hard to be fancy with the plating and ingredients. We had one dinner and one breakfast, it was nice although would have preferred something simple and comforting. read more

My husband and I came here for a work meeting over breakfast and coffee and enjoyed the warmth of the cozy fireplace with the winter white backdrop outside the windows. I was then served a beet salad sans beets. Then a pork chop that was precut and dry beyond consumption. I asked that it be taken back and was promptly served a rare chop. Their knowledge of wine and cocktails far exceeds anything else in the area and is comparable to a five-star resort anywhere. House-made syrups with local ingredients make for unique cocktail tastes! From the lackluster, inexperienced staff to the horribly kept grounds and rooms that resemble the worst of any youth hostel, Troutbeck is a huge disappointment. There is no attention to detail, indeed no attention to anything all around. There is a clear lack of management and funds, apparently, to make it a great destination, a great piece of Americana. The place looks as if it hasn't had much attention since the mid 19th century- And yet, pricing is as if it were a 5 star resort. The one exception is the restaurant- the food and service were very good. But a fixed prix menu doesn't cut it- Don't waste your time or money on Troutbeck. read more

Uninspired menu, poorly executed. Went for breakfast to check the new place out. The menu was pretty basic and didn't really have many choices for breakfast- maybe two basic egg dishes and pancakes. The food was the type of quality you get at a mid-level business hotel. It was edible, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to get it. Given that this place makes such a big deal about their cooking, it was extremely disappointing. I have a weekend house in the area and was really excited about having a new option for dining, but I don't see myself coming back here. read more

Hooray!! This incredible restaurant is well on its way to a Michelin star. My second dinner there even surpassed my first which I thought was perfect! The property is simply beautiful as is the restaurant. Very current and cool in feel the waitstaff could not be more knowledgeable and efficient. The varied menu had specials recited as well . The snapper I had was a special exceeded a similar dish I had in a highly recommended Manhattan restaurant. The Venison chop was cooked to perfection and tender. Appetizers as well were varied in selection and delicious as was dessert. As I was with 6 people we got to taste varied dishes and everyone was raving. If this chef can please these sophisticated palate diners then clearly he is going to go up the ladder to notoriety. I would book this soonest before It gets more superlative reviews. Personally I cannot wait to return and already booked for Mother's Day with my family We also will be staying the weekend in the eclectic and beautiful lodging surround by the beauty of the Hudson River Valley.
