I was excited to also learn that there was an Edward Gorey art exhibit! 2&1/2 hours from my house, not a bad drive! Check in time was at 4:00 but we got there early so they stored our luggage and said that they would deliver it to our room and call us when it was ready. We got a quick bite in the bar area which was not included in the weekend but we were starving! Then we looked around and went to a healing bowl meditation in the spa area. It was so relaxing, a great start to the weekend. They called us to come get our key and we went up to the room. It was Victorian looking with a balcony that had rocking chairs and 2 beds. Very pretty. The bathroom was big and had a walk in shower. It think it was a handicapped room. I didn't request one but when I called to make the reservation I inquired about how difficult it would be for a person to get around with a walker so perhaps they took the hint. The resort was massive!! And also beautiful to look at inside and out. It was also extremely clean with fresh flowers all over the place and little nooks to sit in to look outside and take in the views. The mystery weekend was so much fun. It was a play in 4 parts and by Sunday at 10 am you had to submit your guess as to "whodunnit". Just like a real life game of clue. There was also a thick packet of puzzles and games to try to solve by looking all over the hotel at the artwork to solve them. We ended up skipping that packet because we wanted a more relaxing experience. We did participate in the tabletop escape room which was really fun. We also skipped an afternoon tea on Saturday that let you interact with the characters and ask them questions to help try to solve the murder mystery. Instead we went to the spa for 2 different meditation classes. We repeated the sound bowl from the day before and also took another one which was part lecture and part meditation. I think we were supposed to choose between the mystery weekend and the regular stay which included the classes because there was so much to do besides participating in the mystery activities that we couldn't get to any other resort activities without skipping the mystery activities. We loved the mystery activities but decided that next time we would go for a relaxing spa type of stay. As far as the food, it was delicious and a lot of it! There was breakfast, brunch/lunch and dinner. We opted out of the breakfast and went to brunch both days which was a buffet with breakfast and lunch options. There were also stations to get freshly made food such as pasta, waffles, carving stations and a whole dessert area. The food was definitely upscale. For dinner it was a sit down with a waiter and a 3 course meal. The dinners took forever! First came the bread which was freshly baked and amazing, then we ordered the appetizer and the entire. The appetizers took a long time to come out but the entree took at least 45 min to arrive both nights. On Friday night we had to be at the first installment of the murder mystery play at 9:00 and our dinner came at 8:50! We took a few bites and had to leave. They were nice enough to tell us to stop back later to pick up our dessert to eat in the room. I enjoyed the brunch more than the dinners to be honest, the fish dish I had one night was extremely bland. Second night, same snafu but we did not have to be anywhere at 9pm so we stuck it out. If there were 1/2 stars this place would rate a 4&1/2 in my book. The 1/2 being taken because of the dinners and the price of the weekend. Now that I am on the mailing list, they are sending me some better deals and specials. I'll definitely be back to take advantage of those!

Has the place improved over the years? Well that's all a matter of perspective. Personally I miss the old days, but I'm a bit of a cranky eccentric. This review is based on a midweek stay during the peak of autumn foliage, a lovely time to visit when the weather cooperates. The hotel itself is old and charming with wonky floors and wild patterned carpeting, but well maintained and immaculate. Pricing is all inclusive (no tipping, yay!) with three meals a day and afternoon tea thrown in. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style, taken in a large room with high ceilings alongside hundreds of other guests. It's kind of like a fancy summer camp, with service from the mostly young staff ranging from friendly and responsive to adequate. The food is very good, especially the omelettes at breakfast (which include ingredients like lobster and local cheeses), as well as their addictive home baked pastries. You won't leave Mohonk hungry (or thinner!), that's for sure. The main draw at Mohonk for me are the natural gardens and beautifully groomed hiking trails, which range from easy to steep and strenuous. I've downgraded my hiking choices over the years to match my waning fitness level, but there's truly something for everyone. Numerous activities offered: large indoor pool, guided hikes, axe throwing lessons, archery, meditation, evening lectures and live music in the parlor. Paddle boats, canoes and rowboats are available to explore the beautiful lake at no extra charge. The spa is pricey but a wonderful experience, and includes use of an outdoor mineral whirlpool set amidst trees that I love, as well as sauna and steam room on your day of service. Room decor varies, so check the website carefully before reserving. We usually go for the Victorian style rooms which come with a working fireplace and ornate wood moldings. Sound insulation in the vintage building is sketchy which may impact your rest time (depending on your neighbors) but there's no late night partying, in fact the place is dead quiet at night. I rode the elevators and walked around late one night when I couldn't sleep and saw no one at all, not even at the front desk. The spirits of past owners and residents were the only ones in evidence. Be aware that they routinely offer "kids stay and eat free" promotions during summer months, resulting in hordes of noisy youngsters taking over the place. I check their website carefully and try to book when these promos are Not in effect lol. I'll always have a soft spot for Mohonk, a very special place and a true haven from modern stress.

They are connected so if you have loud neighbors, you won't be getting good sleep. Overall, my kids loved the place and want to go back soon. I guess we'll have to wait for another Black Friday deal.

Temperature-wise, it was funny, my son and I were warm, while my wife and daughter were cold, so I guess that means the room temperature was just right. One thing to note: the walls are thin. You can definitely hear noise from nearby rooms and above. Since this is a family-focused resort, that's kind of expected. It didn't bother us, but if you're looking for total quiet, this may not be the place. Since it was midweek, there were discounts, and they even offered us on our last night an extra night for and even more discounted rate. We were ready to head home, but I would absolutely consider staying longer next time. The resort is all-inclusive, and the food was solid overall. * Breakfast was your typical buffet--scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, French toast, etc. They will cook eggs to order if you ask. * Lunch was buffet-style as well and changed daily. Not amazing, but it got the job done. * Dinner was my favorite meal and felt a bit higher quality, with multiple courses and limited menu options (which I actually liked). * Dessert was fun, especially the ice cream machine. One thing I noticed is that the food is served at a kid-friendly temperature, which took a little getting used to. I'm guessing they do this so kids don't get burned. The activities were the highlight. Skiing was fantastic because it was almost empty, there were only a few other people on the hill. Since I hadn't skied since the early 90s, it was great to have the space to fall a few times without worrying about others. The staff was extremely helpful and encouraging. The hill is more like a bunny slope, but honestly, it's perfect for beginners. If you spent a few days learning here, you'd feel confident going to a bigger mountain. Horseback riding was also great, and since it was midweek, we could have gone multiple times a day. The indoor/outdoor heated pool was really nice, and there's even a waterslide. A lot of the resort seems better suited for summer, and some things were closed for winter, but we came mainly for skiing, so that didn't bother us. The staff deserves a lot of credit. Everyone was friendly and accommodating, and we never felt rushed. There's a saloon downstairs where they run games at night and offer a free drink of the night. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are always available. One small downside: when the dining areas close at night, soda machines aren't accessible, so you'd need to use vending machines (machines were coin only, so I couldn't use my Apple Pay), which felt a little odd for an all-inclusive resort. But, you can grab drinks to go while the dining room is open. On our last day, they let us do a late checkout since no one was checking into our room. We were able to grab lunch and head out without rushing, which was really appreciated. Definitely a lot more things I can talk about, but these were just the stand out things I remember. Overall: Rocking Horse Ranch is a great choice for families, beginners learning to ski, or anyone looking for a relaxed, all-inclusive getaway--especially midweek when it's quieter. This tiny inn is literally in the middle of nowhere, and there are less than 20 rooms, but it is perfect for an unplugged weekend getaway (although they do have free wifi) or a wedding, which is what we were there for. The layout is a tad confusing. The main inn is almost at the end of a tiny dirt road, but there is an "outhouse" of rooms closer to the entrance. I'm also not sure if there is an official restaurant or not because we missed breakfast and the wedding was catered by an outside company. The grounds are natural and beautiful -- like a well-manicured backyard complete with garden, fire pit and gazebo. Our room felt like my old bedroom in my parents' house, with a private bathroom. I truly felt like I was a guest in someone's home -- down to the communal iron and ironing board propped against the wall in the hallway. Given that this is a tiny inn, there are no newfangled key cards; they use old-fashioned keys, and our room was unlocked when we arrived. This normally would be sketchy, but in such a small, remote place, it didn't bother me. There is also no central air conditioning, but there are air conditioning units in all rooms along with ceiling fans. It was summer, so it didn't bother me in the least, but it didn't appear there was heat in our third floor "servants' quarters" room, and there was a space heater in the closet. There are extra blankets on the bed, and I'm sure heat rises, but it is something to be aware of if you are visiting during the New England winter. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. There are a couple of key points that prevent me from giving Wake Robin five stars. 1. The mattresses could use replacing. This too felt like my childhood bedroom where the mattress is 27 years old and hard as a rock. 2. The bathroom amenities, while all natural and eco-friendly, were a tad sparse. This curly-haired girl needs conditioner people! And while there were cotton balls, Q-tips and makeup remover pads, there were no tissues. Odd. 3. I understand TV isn't the priority, but a tiny 30-inch rear projection on an end table tucked under an eave? At least fake an entertainment center. 4. A pub would be adorable right off the lobby, offering simple sandwiches, salads and drinks. Overall, we had a lovely night at the Wake Robin Inn, and I would consider returning for a little weekend getaway. The nearby town centers are so quaint and worth exploring.

We knew we needed a place for 150 people and we knew we wanted it to be drivable for both family and friends in upstate New York and Boston.   We stumbled upon The Lake House Guest Cottages of the Berkshires after months of searching, but the only wedding we had seen hosted there was inside the main cottage. Reluctantly, we decided it was probably too small for us.   Fast forward another month.  Randomly one night, my wife and I both separately pulled up the venue again and I said, "We need to just call them. Maybe they have some grass we can put a tent on." After a couple of email exchanges, Eric, the owner, and Cory, the grounds keeper, invited us out to see the space and were instantly sold. The beautiful grounds, the stunning cottages (or as we like to call them, "mini mansions"), THE VIEW.   Not only did they have four cottages on site where guests could stay, but they also had a field where they had placed a tent for previous weddings that could hold up to 150 guests. We soon found out that over the winter months they would be adding three additional cottages for guests to stay and a seasonal tent to be used for weddings throughout the summer and fall. Needless to say, we booked it.   A couple months into planning, LHGC added a wedding coordinator to their awesome team.  We connected with Kelsey instantly, discussing plans we had made and things we had coming down the line. She was always available if we had a question or concern. Come time to do our walk through before the wedding, we laid out the entire day with the help of Kelsey and our caterer.  We walked away knowing we had the dream team on board.   When our weekend approached, all the new additions were complete and the space was more beautiful than ever. We had our rehearsal brunch Friday morning and welcome party Friday night, both of which allowed for the caterers to take full advantage of the catering kitchen in the main cottage. Kelsey and Cory were completely accommodating and there from start to finish to help with anything we needed.   Our guests arrived sporadically from Friday morning through the evening and spent time playing lawn games, kayaking and paddleboarding on the lake, and enjoying each other's company.  It was so nice to have the entire grounds at our disposal.   On our wedding day, it was just the same. Everything went off seamlessly. Kelsey and Cory were both there if something came up, made sure that set up was perfect, ran the ceremony and reception smoothly and effortlessly.   Our wedding was perfect.
