There were a lot of spider webs on the outside of the windows due to being so close to the lake. If you don't like bugs, I don't recommend this venue! For the most part the staff was friendly but they did seem to be a little bit rushy a little bit before halfway through. They took my silverware before I was done eating without asking. The entrance is handicap accessible although there are no signs indicating that. I was trying to open the front door when suddenly they opened by themselves so I was caught off guard. I was just interested in the historical marker and the building itself. Unfortunately, we did not have an opportunity to walk the grounds around the building to view the lake as a keen eye can see across to Canada from here. The marker reads, "Russell A. Alger, Jr., (1873-1930) son of Michigan's Governor Russell Alger, built this Italian Renaissance style mansion in 1910. Alger was one of the founders of the Packard Motor Car Company, Charles A. Platt of New York designed this elaborate structure, and Ellen Shipman of New York landscaped the grounds. The home, situated on Lake St. Clair, was referred to as "The Moorings." Alger lived here until his death in 1930. From 1936 to 1948, the house was used by the Detroit Institute of Arts as a branch museum. In 1949 it was deeded to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association in memory of those who served and died in our nation's wars and for facilitating the educational, cultural and civic needs of the community." It also mentions that it was erected in 1983 by the Michigan History Division. Russell A. Alger, Sr. was a Civil War general who served as the 20th Governor of Michigan from 1885 to 1887, US Senator and eventually, US Secretary of War under President William McKinley from 1897 to 1899. He was replaced during the Spanish-American War. The original home is still here and has had an auditorium added in 1962 and art wings added in 1977 and 1993. The original home building was donated by the Alger family to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association in 1949 and is an event venue. I'd like very much for someone to invite me to a wedding here! My favorite dish was the Swedish meatballs, though the meatballs in the Asian plum sauce were great, as well. The chicken marsala had a prominent wine flavor. I also sampled the chicken piccata. I typically prefer piccata, but enjoyed the marsala more. The mostaccioli was tasty, and the pesto drizzle on top was a nice touch. The mashed potatoes and green beans were also delicious. While the food was definitely a highlight, more than anything, Noah, Nicole, James, and the entire staff were a pleasure to work with. We got married at the Lafayette Grande this past weekend (July 2026) and I truly, truly can't…read morerecommend it enough. If you haven't toured their spaces, please go check it out. I initially found the venue through a comment on a Reddit thread about Metro-Detroit venues and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. As soon as we toured the building and saw the gorgeous 1920s architecture, we knew we'd found the right place. As the building was formerly a Masonic Temple, the craftsmanship and design flourishes in the building were absolutely unmatched compared to anywhere else we looked. We did our rehearsal dinner the night before in The Pontiac Lounge, our ceremony and reception in The Crystal Ballroom, then threw an afterparty in The Speakeasy Lounge downstairs. We had a total of roughly 170 guests, but they have space for a lot more than that if you need it. It was such a fun party and our guests (and vendors!) spoke so highly of the space, the food, the staff and the atmosphere. The entire process was unbelievably smooth. Everything went flawlessly before, during and after. That's a testament to the whole team that made it happen there. From the initial tour, to tastings, to setup and teardown, everyone was so helpful and easy to work with. They execute events with unrivaled professionalism and experience, which in turn, removed a ton of stress from our planning process. A few other perks and great things worth mentioning: -There is plenty of free parking, which is a huge bonus and made the travel logistics very simple. -There are a bunch of cool spots within walking distance in Downtown Pontiac that we used for exterior photos. Lots of great architecture and murals as backdrops. -There are several other gorgeous rooms available in the building, that they could honestly accommodate your wedding in a million different ways. -The food was incredible. -The Crystal Ballroom has beautiful architectural details (insanely cool handcrafted woodwork, trim, etc.). The decor of the room is so good on its own, that we didn't have to bring in a ton of outside decorations. -Our main points of contact were the owners (and it's worth mentioning that this is a family-owned business). You can tell they really love what they do and have a passion for their events, food and historic building. -The new floors in the bar area upstairs are gorgeous. The new chandeliers and work they've done in the Speakeasy is stunning. -On that note, the Speakeasy was a great party space (my wife and I DJ'd the afterparty along with some other musician friends and it was a great way to top off the night). -We did every single thing we wanted at a price point that was right in our budget. Our wedding looked and felt like it cost much, much more than we paid. To Greg, Rob, Ryan, Lauren and the whole team: thank you so much. 10/10 every step of the way. The brothers were all so nice and present throughout the entire process, along with Lauren, always stopping at every table to make sure you have everything you need. I love that they even have the bar open during the testings. The day of my wedding went perfect. They fed everyone so fast, and everyone complimented the food. We provided our own charger plates and this facility even washed them all for us before we went to pick them up the next day. They had the few things we left in an area for us, loading everything in and out was perfect, I just loved it. They really made my wedding day so special. I recommend them to everyone. We toured numerous venues and as soon as we saw this one it was a no brainer. We booked the Crystal Ballroom and it was just so amazing. We loved it. It's also a great venue to have kids.
