The place is very unique with its decor which is fun to look at. The music was great - definitely had me lip-synching much to my daughter's chagrin. The service was prompt and friendly. We started with the fried pickles which while tasty were probably not made on the premises. Definitely had the frozen, commercial vibe and taste going. She had the Asian Chicken sandwich and fries which she liked immensely. I had the Late Night breakfast - egg, bacon, toast and grits. The grits had an odd flavor. Being from the deep south I feel like I know grits and these were not traditional grits. Not my preference but the remainder of the meal was as expected. My food was barely warm. The Mac was delicious. The turkey tasted old. I couldn't eat it. I tried for 5 mins to get a refill on my drink. In the middle of Jan it felt like the air conditioner was on. When the waitress served us she was pleasant. Just very slow to get food and drinks out when the only had a few customers. I don't plan on going back. read more

Not once but twice! 2 days in a row we tried to eat at Troys Diner and both times we were met at the door by employees telling us the Diner was closed. The first time they were closing more than an hour early because they didn't feel they had enough business and the second time was less than an hour but plenty of time for us to eat. This is an aging establishment that I am sure at one time was really something. The food is good I had the chicken fried steak and I have to admit it was one of the better ones I have had in years. Some of the other menu items my family ordered where not as impressive but still ok. My wife had the Philly and she was not impressed but I would not expect to get a quality Philly from a 50s dinner. I went to lunch at Troy's with my wife and our 3 small children. Service was great. Ambience was traditional diner. I ordered a patty melt and my wife ordered a reuben. Kids got chicken strips. Awesome breakfast joint. Very cool old school style diner with Funky decor. I had breakfast. Pancakes of course... The Sausage links were also delicious, coffee was hot and food was cooked well. Wife had the Philly and said it was good. The kids meals were served In a classic car case. They loved that as did I. We Had a table of 5 and the server was attentive as he could possibly be as it looked like he had about 10 tables to wait on. The service was great though, don't get me wrong; just a hoppin' place. The 4 rating is really mainly because the diner could use some updating/repairs. The important stuff though, food and service were both very good. My husband had the country fried steak. He really enjoyed it and he loved the crispy fries that went with it. I had the open faced turkey sandwich. It had a huge portion of turkey and was very tasty. You could tell that the mashed potatoes and gravy were homemade. The waitress was very attentive and went out of her way to make sure that everyone was happy. We visit Boone at least twice a year to get away. Being the owner of a neon sign shop in South Carolina, I was drawn to the diner experience, with all the nostalgic looks of the diner and neon lighting. This year we noticed he replaced outside perimeter neon with cheap holiday rope lighting. BOOOO! Inside , the neon tubes need attention too. Replace some tube supports and level out the glass! Went there due to great reviews but we found it to be just ok. Ordered burgers that were so greasy the buns literally disintegrated they were so slimy. Also ordered the fried pickles and the waitress never brought them. When asked where they were she said she forgot to order them. My 9 year old son ordered chocolate chip pancakes and didn't even like them due to all of the grease. When a kid doesn't eat something with chocolate and syrup...you know there's an issue. Seems like the food could have been good. Maybe they just need to clean the grill or use less grease. Staff was very nice though! read more

I can genuinely only think of one nitpick, and that being if you're in a hurry, this may not be the place for you. That being said? It takes time to prepare good food, the place is usually hopping, and our party had time to kill, and we were very very glad we came here. For food this good, at a place this busy, it came in just the right amount of time. As a southerner, I can give no greater compliment than this to a restaurant in this price-bracket: There are about three places on the planet where I know of that you can get real, proper, heavenly-experience Country-Fried Steak. One of those places is my old home town, and there every last bit of it was locally sources, and it was hand-prepared over the course of multiple days of work. Troy's is now one of those three places. Our group loved it so much, we visited repeatedly (and mind you, we didn't get to sample even a tenth the variety on the menu). The portions were fantastically sized (such that you feel just the right amount of full right as you finish) the staff had an awesome attitude, and seemed very very competent, and the fries and shakes are both to die for (musts for a diner). The former are crispy, seasoned to perfection, and cooked just-so such that there are no burnt, nor soggy under-cooked fries in a bunch, but rather a uniform heap of golden goodness. The latter are creamy, flavorful, cold, and enormous. I advise those who eat here to order their shake to-go, after the meal, and savor it slowly or to order it as the drink for their meal. Don't show up here an hour before closing time, or you will be made to feel unwelcome. The hours are posted on the door--"open until 9:00 PM". I arrived a little after 8, ordered quickly, enjoyed a beer while I waited, and my steak tips with peppers and onions arrived shortly thereafter. It was OK, mediocre diner food, but I didn't expect much. A burger would have probably been a better choice. At 8:40, I asked if I had time for another beer, since I noticed the place had emptied. The waiter seemed unsure, and looked to someone who appeared to be in charge, who replied "well, we're gonna be cleaning up all around you". I can take a hint, so I paid the tab and left. They should just change their hours to read "close at 8:30". I travel for a living (stay at hotel next door) and found it extremely rude and unprofessional. It's a shame since I'd eaten there several times in the past and it has been fine. Next time I'll go to Coyote Kitchen or Sagebrush so these guys can go home or whatever. read more

I don't know what was worse the food, the service or the cleanliness of the restaurant We waited forever to be waited on and when our food arrived my bun was burnt I asked the server for a new bun which he never brought so had to eat my mushroom burger without a bun also the mushrooms were not cooked when the cook cut them they were so thick they had no chance of being cooked We where sat by the back door to the building which had dirty dish rags in front of it like they were there to either keep the breeze out from under the door or bugs out who knows Will never waste my time or money going back to this diner :( read more
