My wife and I just got married and wanted to take a short honeymoon. Not having been to Cancun, TRS looked nice enough and we wanted to try an all-inclusive. Unfortunately, this place had me super bummed out.
Cons:
Like many others have mentioned, the check-in process is super slow because they want to try and sell you on coming to their timeshare meeting the next morning. Took us about 2 hours to get checked in before we could even get to our room.
Our newlywed package promised a "$1500 resort credit". We even called to confirm this was true and the customer service reps told us "you can use the credit in the spa and on any souvenirs and such". This is actually a $1500 coupon booklet for VERY specific things. For instance, $15 off on a pair of sandals and a hat at the gift shop, or $50 off a $400 massage. To me, this was bait and switch marketing and already had me angry. I wanted my wife to pamper herself all week.
We were also promised a free room upgrade for being newlyweds. Unfortunately, "all the rooms were booked" so that wasn't an option. No matter, we had a junior swim-up suite which was nice. Oh wait, we got the only suite that had 60 rooms overlooking it from across the canal. Talk about romance. We only saw maybe 3 other people in our building the entire time we were there.
We finally get to the room, and I'm expecting champagne and a fruit basket (as was promised in our package to commemorate our marriage). No such luck. In fact, they told us to call customer service on our phone when we got to the room to make all of our reservations for our stay, and the batteries in the phone were so old they had rusted out the phone and it didn't work at all.
The room seemed nice upon first inspection, but after staying there for 3 days, it's easy to find the imperfections. The floors are all nice, buffed out tile, which is great, but super dangerous when wet. Whoever designed the shower was an idiot, because when you take a shower the water goes right under the door and sends A LOT of water out into your room. The only way to avoid this is to put a towel under the door.
Speaking of reservations, you had better make them when you get there! If you don't have one, they will lie to you and say that restaurant is closed or that they are fully booked. Make sure you put on your reservation that you want to sit at a table with a nice view! Because if you don't, you won't get one! We constantly were sat in the middle of the restaurant instead of by the window overlooking water. When we asked to be moved, they were always "booked" even though nobody sat at them during our entire stay. I'm not talking about 1 table, there were constantly 5+ tables that had better views that we couldn't be moved to.
Our first reservation was at the French restaurent, La Boheme. Do not go here. The food was nasty, we sent back a couple of dishes after taking one bite and the chef came out and harassed us about "what's wrong with the food?" My wife's sea bass tasted like bad tuna out of a can, and my parmentier tasted like baby food. The sports bar was only slightly better, and I do mean slightly. Everything is fried and tastes of bad grease.
Set up your own transportation to get where you want to go! Although it is nice that they will provide rides for you, you will be up way too early. TRS seems to be in the worst place location-wise, because you will always be the first to get picked up or the last to be dropped off. We booked an excursion to Tulum Mayan ruins, we got picked up at 6:30am and didn't arrive there until 10:25am. Our trip took 15 hours and the excursion itself took about 7 hours.
When we had to go to the airport for our 6:30am flight, we had to get picked up at 2:20am! We expected that we would have to pick up other passengers on the way, but no, the driver arrived at 2:00am and took us straight to the airport. We arrived an hour before airport staff did so we had to wait in the lobby and then wait 2.5 hours for our flight.
They say TRS is adults only, but the family side is literally shouting distance away and the families don't care, they come to your side anyway.
Pros:
The room was nice enough, comfortable bed and furniture. We overlooked a canal and our infinity swim-up pool.
The staff (other than the travel salesmen) were trained appropriately in customer service.
The resort has a small beach on the ocean, which had clean water and nice chairs. There was also a bar and servers walking around, which was great. Be careful if you take your kids out there though, some decided that it was a nude beach.
Helios beach club was the best food that we had and also had a great view of the ocean and pool. Try to eat here as much as you can.
The steakhouse wasn't bad, which I'm putting as a pro because of all of the cons.
I just expected them to try and make our honeymoon at least a little special and we would have gone back.
Long story short, go elsewhere! read more
