Delicious food, great ambiance. Clean premises, charming decor. Servers were polite and accommodating. Our kids aged 6 and 2 loved the crayons and placemats! They both had the cheeseburger and fries kids meal and my very picky 6yo ate the burger and fries with no complaints! I got to try some of their burgers and they were so yummy! I ordered the chili and cornbread and a side salad. The chili was the best chili I've ever had at a restaurant. I usually never eat the whole thing when I order it at restaurants but this time I did. The salad was delicious and the in-house ranch very tasty. My husband got the Reuben sandwich. It was gigantic and stuffed with meat. He really enjoyed it. The dessert was also very good. We all shared one slice of the chocolate Oreo pie, the coconut cream pie, and the huckleberry cheesecake. The chocolate pie was not too sweet and was very creamy. The coconut pie was very light. Whoa Amazing food!!! We found this on yelp and debated since it was only 4 stars, but were so glad we tried it after all! The food was delicious, and the service great. It was a Friday mid afternoon and other restaurants were empty, but this one was pretty full, which we took as a selling point. And even though they were busy, they were extremely helpful, and nice, and the food came out without too long of a wait at all. We ordered the taco salad, fish and chips, and shared a piece of carrot cake. Everything was off the charts delicious, and the portions were generous. I'm fact the cake was HUGE!!! My family and I just moved to Idaho from CA in February. We have friends in Idaho and they recommended Trudy's. My family and I drove there today to try it out. When we first walked into the restaurant we were greeted by the friendliest group of ladies! It was so nice to see smiling faces! I have 4 year old triplets. They each received a kids menu with crayons. My triplets ordered the same thing. They all got the mini corn dogs with fries. The kids loved their meals. I ordered the cheeseburger with onion rings, my husband ordered the double cheeseburger with bacon and my mom ordered the turkey sandwich with avocado. We all enjoyed our food. Trudy's is well known for their pies so we took some to go, to enjoy at home. The pies were delicious. We ordered chocolate cream, banana cream and peach. Our server was super sweet! I wish I would have gotten her name. We will definitely go back!! I think it is important to support local restaurants and businesses; especially at this unprecedented time that we are going through. read more

We went to Trudy's Kitchen today for the first time. I was excited to see they have a gluten free menu that's actually full of amazing choices. I ordered the gf finger steaks and they did not disappoint. The batter was crispy with no chalky residue. The steak was thick and tender. I also ordered a piece of gf huckleberry cheesecake to go. It was equally delicious. It's not often that I leave a restaurant not feeling left out because of a subpar menu. I was truly satisfied and can't wait to return. The restaurant was super busy on this Sunday afternoon but the girls working were friendly, polite, efficient and full of personality. We sat outside on the covered deck because the inside was full. Our order was taken in a timely manner and we were checked on by a couple different girls several times. They made us feel like family. My wife took me here today for my birthday. I had, of course, the CFS (Chicken Fried Steak) The steak was very greasy and the meat not tender. The gravy had no flavor at all either. I left most of it on the plate. The CFS came with scrambled eggs and home made hash browns. The eggs were not scrambled. They are omelets that you have to cut up. (I wish I could fid a breakfast place that knew how to actually make scrambled eggs) Scrambled eggs should be a mixture of eggs and either milk, half and half, or heavy cream. Then the mixture should be whipped with a whisk which add air to the mixture. They result should be light and fluffy scrambled eggs. I have yet to find 1 restaurant anywhere in the Boise area that knows how to make these. The toast was....well, it was toast. not much to say about toast except for the jam. They only served me what tasted like an orange marmalade. It was way too sweet. I had some of my wife's bacon. Very greasy and way too salty. Stopped in on my birthday for a family lunch. The place was busy but our experience was not a result of the rush. My son in law ordered a burger but got a whole lot more. When the meal arrived he looked it over to build the burger and noticed a quarter on top of the pickles but under the lettuce as if it was stacked in purposely to be seen when you look. Thankfully he didn't bite into it and break a tooth or choke. When asked WTF? The waitress said it must have been in the pickle container when they served it up. Not likely, quarters don't float and it was purposely stacked for effect. No apologies or meal discount at all, just suck it up homie. This place is a dive that breeds disease and filth. Grammy and Grampy split a piece of banana cream pie. What a joke, it was just instant banana jello pudding and cool whip beat until it stood up like meringue, famous pie my ass. Their cook was trained in prison so who knows what other hand-shaken garbage you'll find in the rest of their slop. The only reason this is a 2 star review and not 1 is because the burgers weren't too bad. We received menus and waters when we sat down in the more than half-empty restaurant. After that, we had to go to the counter ourselves to get anything done. Nobody came to our table to take our order. Nobody came to see if we needed anything after food was delivered. My husband received the wrong drink. Half of my fries were old and the other half were almost raw. I asked for Mayo or fry sauce, and both were out. We had to go to the counter to pay. And the kicker is that we kept seeing the staff talking and joking with each other right behind the counter, not paying attention to the dining floor. The first time I came here a few years ago it was a somewhat pleasant experience, but I doubt we'll ever go back after today. We have gone to Trudy's a free times in the past and always have loved it. We heard there was new owners and decided to try them out again. We went there on 5/19/2019. I got breakfast and my husband got the bacon cheeseburger. The burger was perfectly cooked and the fries were tasty, a little soggy but still tasty. My scrambled eggs were a little over cooked I think cause they weren't very fluffy, the hash browns were pretty good and the bacon was delicious. Husband's point of view is Trudy's is still delicious and my point of view is they are still good. Will be back in the future to try some more. read more

A gem in the hills, Trudys's never ceases to please. Great waitstaff, super reasonable prices and 8 inch tall pies will always being me back a 2nd time. We frequent this place to bring pie home after trips to the hot springs but sometimes we grab a bite. Today, I got their taco salad - beef ground on the premises with fresh, steady meat, fresh lettuce, a ton of whole black olives, fresh perfect avocado and cheese. Their flour bowls are light and crisp and I only wish the salsa had a bit more kick. It when I asked they promptly added a few jalapeños to my salad. My friend got the tuna melt, it looked lovely with fresh sprouts and giant French fries. I got a peach pie slice and a chocolate cream pie slice to take home for family. We went up a week or so ago for lunch. They were busy but not completely full and had quite a few servers. We got water right away but it took about 1/2 hour for someone to come and take our order. We ordered a burger and a Po Boy sandwich. It took almost 45 minutes to an hour to finally get our food (that was after I asked another server to check on our order). The food came, burger was fine. The "spicy cajun fish" had no spice, the "shredded cabbage" was coleslaw. What a dissapointment. 10 years ago I was hiking in Pakistan. While on the train for 18 hours, all I heard was the drone of conversations in the local language. After hours of listening to dialog that you can't understand, it's almost shocking when your brain registers comprehension and you realize you just heard something in English. The English words I heard were ..."Trudy's Kitchen Idaho City". I had forgotten about the experience until today when my wife and I walked over here from the Inn. The sign above the building said, "World Famous Trudy's Kitchen". Then the memory of the conversation I overheard a decade before on the other side of the world came flooding back. We were driving through Idaho City and saw the sign for "Homemade Huckleberry Cheesecake" and had to stop in to try it out. When we got seated, we found out they were out of Huckleberry Cheesecake which was a bummer but we ordered some lunch anyway and while we were waiting for our food, our waitress let us know they just had some fresh cheesecakes brought in by the owner (she cooks them fresh daily). I had the finger steaks which were tender pieces of steak with a light breading (I actually liked the lighter breading as opposed to the heavy breading that other dishes like this usually have). The dipping sauce was a cocktail sauce that was pretty standard. The fries are fresh cut and generously sized so you get a good taste of warm, creamy potato in each bite. The coleslaw was pretty sweet but fresh tasting and satisfying. Overall, the food was above average for diner-style options like this. When dessert came, we decided to also get a dutch apple pie and peach berry pie slice in addition to the cheesecake. The pies are excellent (note: their cream pies are ridiculously huge, over 6 inches high). Buttery, flaky pie crusts and a generous amount of filling. The cheesecake was the highlight though, creamy with a unique crust and a soft velvety huckleberry layer. There aren't a ton of options in Idaho City but I'd recommend Trudy's if just for the pies & cheesecake alone. read more

Stopped on our way to Boise and stopped at the first place we saw. The parking lot was packed which is always a good indicator it's going to be good! We were greeted the second we walked in. The servers were hands down some of the best we have ever had! Very quick and fun. We started with the loaded fries which are hand cut and freassshhh! If you're looking for a classic, small-town, diner, this is it. Everything on the menu is exactly what you want so it's hard to choose. The salad dressing is homemade and seriously magical. Our server was the sweetest gal whose name escapes me, but she was glad to be back after having her wisdom teeth removed. Apart from everything being exactly what we wanted, another server (we called her Trudy) walked past our table and said to our friend, "Are you wearing Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue?" Uh, what? Made a quick stop to pick up some highly recommended pie to bring to friends in Boise. The pie was pretty OK but the service was not great.

Sunday May 30th, we all stopped in for a family lunch. After 15 minutes of waiting at our table with no waitress, we had to walk to the counter to get our own pitcher of water. Our waitress showed up shortly after that. I understand restaurants can be busy during lunch hour. I ordered the juicy hamburger and when it was brought out by the waitress, it had a quarter wrapped up in the lettuce. I honestly wasn't sure if this was a joke, or if it was a special thing they did. Seemed a bit odd to me. For all I know it could have been on the floor the night before after falling out of a strippers ass crack. It's a crazy world out there. We brought it to the waitresses attention and she quickly brought out a new plate, which ended up being the wrong meal. However when the bill showed up, nothing was deducted from the bill. Pretty poor service if you ask me. I can't put all the blame on the waitresses though. The cooks never have to deal with it. What I can say is HIRE MORE WAITRESSES. They were severely understaffed and honesty were probably under a bit of stress during those peak hours. Restaurants that are understaff I'll completely avoid. I've been here many times and it used to be my go to restaurant in Idaho City. I think they've changed ownership as the menu is not the same and has fewer options. My husband got the grilled chicken salad and his chicken was still pink. The waitress sent it back to the kitchen to be cooked longer. I ordered the Philly sandwich. The steak was hard with no flavor, it tasted funny actually. The fries were undercooked with some burnt ones mixed in. They charge an extra 4.5% to use a credit card. The good part was the wait staff were very nice and looked like they were working pretty hard. I just wish the food had been close to decent. We probably won't be back. read more

Lunch was very good and the home cooked chicken and noodles soup was especially good. We even took to go some home made pie and cinnamon rolls. The place was a mess bathrooms weren't stocked. Fingersteak batter was stale, my prime rib was ice cold, loaded potato only had minimal sour cream and chives, the two salads combined didn't have a full side of ranch, our order was messed up completely, the kids chicken nuggets were hard in the middle couldn't chew them hardly. The cheesecake they served us had separated the blackberry pie was soup with stale crust. We spent $100 last night and it was the first time I've ever left food on the table at Trudys Kitchen and it will be the last, my family will not return. read more

I recommend the heaping plate of beef ribs, their special on Wednesday nights, and won't spoil the surprise of just how great that they taste. Idahoans are crazy about their huckleberries, and rightly so. If you want to get fat, I suggest that you order a slice or two. Another idea to get you to the Land of Type Two Diabetes is to see if any of their cream pies are available. In either case, momma will have to wheel your ass out to your 1990 Ford pickup, and no nookie for you, as you will be the moron who passes out as she dolls herself up for another evening of motel merriment. Pleasantly surprised. My husband and I stopped in for a quick snack and something to drink while driving through Idaho city. They didn't have appetizers like we'd planned, so we both opted for the crispy chicken salads with homemade ranch. I was pleasantly surprised as I wasn't expecting much. The chicken was juicy but not oily and the ranch had a hearty and garlicky taste. Id be willing to venture out next time and try some of their three items. Service was overall good.
