    Banana pudding was so tasty.
    Louisa M.

I was skeptical about eating bbq in a restaurant located in the basement of a grocery store, but several locals kept mentioning it so we decided to give it a go. Color me surprised! This is one of the best deals in all of Austin. After eating at Terry Black's, Cooper's, and Saltlick, I had hit all of the main touristy (and pricey) barbecue joints. True Texas BBQ is a joy because it's affordable! The portions are huge and the prices are low! My jaw almost dropped when we got two large iced teas, a turkey plate (with ¼ pound of meat, pickles, bread, and TWO sides), a two meat brisket plate (with two sides and the accompaniments) and a banana pudding for half the price we paid for far less food at the other joints in town. All of this with tax was just $34.00! THIRTY FOUR DOLLARS! The service was friendly and fast, and our food came out piping hot in less than 10 minutes after ordering. I was very pleased with the portions, which were large enough to share (especially the sides). My husband loved his chopped brisket, but said the burnt ends were just okay. We'd like to try this place on a different day, because all bbq aficionados will tell you that the food can vary wildly depending on when you visit. The coleslaw was crunchy with a nice bite, and the mustard-based potato salad was a highlight for both of us (no eggs!). My macaroni and cheese was super creamy and al dente, and was quite good and would be a hit with picky kids. My favorite side by far had to be the collard greens, they were absolute vinegary, tangy perfection! This proved to be the best part of my meal, and it is a veggie side you rarely see at restaurants. I thought the turkey was fine, not the best but nice and smoky and juicy with a beautiful crust. The texture was nice, too. The pickles were a hit as well, as was the freshly brewed iced tea (free refills and several sweetened flavors available - but only plain that's unsweet, unfortunately). They provided Splenda and sweetener, which I really appreciated! Neither of us cared for either of the house sauces, one sweet and one spicy (that had zero heat to it). I would prefer to bring my own sauce in next time. You lose a lot by not having a tasty bbq sauce. The banana pudding tasted more like a thick custard, so it was obviously cooked pudding and not instant stuff. We gobbled it down and at a reasonable $3.49 price tag, the portion was just enough for two of us to share after stuffing in all that other food! The restaurant is casual and comfortable, and it was super busy when we were there. Lots of customers were taking out dinner, and the kitchen had run out of sliced brisket. The nice lady at the register warned us before we ordered, which I appreciated, but it would be best if they could just put up a sign that says what they are out of to avoid disappointment. We saw other food coming out of the kitchen and it all looked good, especially the sausage, ribs, and the extra large stuffed sandwiches. I would absolutely come back to eat here. Parking is free, they run specials, there's nice indoor and outdoor seating, service is friendly and fast, and they serve beer. It's a great value, especially if you are on a budget. BBQ is expensive, but this is good quality food at excellent prices.

This is still the best bbq for your buck, but we were baffled why some of our Pickles were served in little baggies.

This is my 1st time and will definitely will not be my last time. It was decent BBQ but I was expecting better. The Mac & Cheese could have been creamier and the collard greens were seasoned nicely and I enjoyed them very much.

My opinion and based off of experience visiting H-E-B's True Texas BBQ restaurants at their stores, these restaurants feel like a fast food joint for BBQ. The BBQ okay in my opinion and taste buds. Their potato salad tastes like something you would buy from their stores. Their brisket is okay as well, it's just missing some of that great flavoring bark taste you normally would experience from a traditional Texas BBQ restaurants. The pork ribs were okay as well but they didn't give me the impression that I would like to brag about my experience with the flavor of them. The prices on their menu is quite affordable compared to their competitors. Unfortunately, this place didn't let me down for the consistency from my experience with H-E-B's True Texas BBQ restaurants, my food has always been served like warm to cold no matter which location I have visited. I truly hope H-E-B fixes the deficiencies because it has potential to be restaurant that many shoppers would love to visit.

Quick and efficient service. Parking is sometimes tricky for a busy H-E-B. Good selection of basic cuts of meat. Portions were delicious. Good beer selection while you wait for your order

    Pulled pork sandwich & cornbread
    Brianna W.

Got lunch at the brand new SoCo HEB and tried the bbq restaurant for the first time. It was a bit challenging to order ahead and confusing but this was their 3rd day in operation so I'm sure it'll improve. The cornbread has a very strange taste to it and it's very dry. I think their cornbread they sell in the grocery store is significantly better. The pulled pork was small and dry but the sauces were good. I know this isn't meant to be Texas' best bbq but I also feel like there's room for improvement.

Came on the opening day for this HEB, and ordered the sliced brisket sandwich for lunch at True Texas BBQ. Look, it's not gonna blow your socks off, like many of Austin's best will, but the sandwich was good overall for the price, so I think it's worth 4 stars. Initially I was disappointed in the size of the sandwich, it's on a small hamburger bun and isn't exactly overflowing with brisket. They skimped a bit on the onion & pickle (just 2 slices). The sauce also comes in small plastic containers, so it seems like they're really trying to ration. Still, when I buy into it, I was pleasantly surprised! The brisket was tender (actually more tender than 1 or 2 well-renowned BBQ spots I've been to recently) and it was mostly flat (a little point in there, I would ask for more next time). The flavor was good, just pretty basic. But a little spicy sauce elevated it to a good spot. The service was pretty fast (they've got an assembly line going in the kitchen) and the servers were friendly. At one point someone came out to ask how everyone was doing; a nice touch. The ambiance isn't beautiful, but they've got a handful of TVs and plenty of seating. Probably a bit less of a destination than the Lake Austin version of True Texas BBQ, but if I'm in the neighborhood I may stop by again.

I had high hopes... 'Generous portions looked delicious. But looks can be deceiving as everything was waaaay oversalted. The brisket would have been spot-on if not so salty. Couldn't tolerate more than one bite of and Mac-n-cheese or collard greens. Very disappointing.

    Fries, turkey sandwich, strawberry lemonade

The fries was different but ok, the turkey sandwich was ok . The pickles, peach tea is good . The restaurant was clean, when I'm back in Austin I might give it a go

The restaurant has a classic look (wood, brick, and ducts), and the menu - meats priced by the pound on a chalkboard - adds to the retro appeal. Those meats are cut to order by a pitmaster. After making your selection, you proceed down a cafeteria-style line and pick your sides. Sauce, pickles, and Wonder Bread are free. We opted for some brisket, a jalapeno sausage link, potato salad, and creamed corn. The brisket was tender and flavorful if a bit fatty while the sausage boasted a firm bite and a winning combination of spicy and cheesy. Unexpectedly, the creamed corn ended up being a highlight. If that's a side you usually avoid, Cooper's version may end up converting you. That said, the potato salad was nothing special and the sauce was very tomato-and-vinegar-forward. As to be expected given Cooper's location and reputation, prices are also quite high (as in almost $40 a pound for brisket). That's not outrageous for a "name" BBQ place in Austin though if I had to pay that after waiting in a long line, I might walk away disappointed. Cooper's is not the best Texas BBQ you're likely to find, but it's a pretty damn solid representation thereof.

As a recipient of the prestigious Texas Monthly Top 100 BBQ Award, the expectations were high--and for the most part, they were met. The venue itself provides a fantastic, relaxed vibe, complete with plenty of TVs and a music stage, making it the perfect spot for chilling out on a lazy afternoon or settling in for an evening hang. The Main Event: Pitmaster Excellence The true test of a Texas BBQ joint is the holy trinity, and here, they nailed the fundamentals: * Brisket: This was Texas BBQ as it should be. The brisket was super juicy, delivered a profound, deep flavor, and possessed a flawless, great bark that spoke to hours of skillful smoking * Spare Ribs: A study in contrast and texture. The ribs offered a satisfying "good pull"--firm enough to bite but still falling cleanly off the bone. The thick, peppery bark was beautifully balanced by a slight sweetness from a pepper jelly glaze, adding a layer of sophisticated flavor you don't always find. * Pork Belly Burnt Ends: These were pure decadence. Each bite provided a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth experience with a distinct and welcome hint of Fierce Whiskers bourbon woven into the smoky, fatty flavor. They are so rich and irresistible, you know you shouldn't eat too many, but good luck stopping. * Jalapeño and Cheese Sausage: This locally sourced link brought the heat with a good level of spice. The flavor was excellent, though the texture leaned slightly toward the processed side, which was the only minor drawback among the meats. The Supporting Cast: Sides A great plate of BBQ requires sides that stand up to the meat, and while two of these were stars, one needs a little work. * Mac & Cheese: An absolute winner. It was cheesy, creamy, and featured an excellent smoked flavor that permeated the dish. The slightly charred edges added a delightful textural counterpoint. * Hash Brown Casserole: This was a surprisingly strong contender, offering a nice assembly of savory flavors. The secret weapon was the corn flake topping, providing an unexpected but welcome crunch, complemented by a satisfying hint of bacon. * Creamed Corn: Unfortunately, this side was the weakest link. It tasted primarily bland, despite a slight peppery note. It desperately needs some fresh jalapeños mixed in to cut through the creaminess and add the essential Texas kick. Final Verdict The meat selection here is truly Top 100 worthy, excelling in technique, flavor, and execution (especially the Brisket and Burnt Ends). The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxed gathering. While the Creamed Corn missed the mark, the stellar Hash Brown Casserole and Smoked Mac & Cheese prove that their side game is usually strong. Come for the high-quality, authentic Texas barbecue, stay for the great outdoor patio.

The Moist Beef Brisket was exceptionally juicy and flavorful with a bark that had my attention. The Prime Pork Belly Burnt Ends were definitely an excellent choice. They were slow-smoked and then tossed in Fierce Whiskers Bourbon Sauce .and smoked again to create a very nice glaze and it was not overly sweet. I ordered the smoked Okra and Tomatoes that more than satisfied my veggie requirement. This spot was close to my hotel, and on my departure day, I decided to have one last hit of Q. It's a big restaurant, and it appears to also be quite the music venue. When I went, a little on the early side for a Friday dinner, there was not a wait and I was sat immediately. My server was attentive, and got me in, fed, and back out in plenty of time to catch my already delayed flight. I ordered their 3 meat combo plate, which also came with two sides, and added on a piece of cornbread. I chose brisket of course, as well as turkey and sausage. The server recommended the serrano pepper spinach (like a creamed spinach) and onion rings, and I took those recs. The best of the three meats was the turkey. Not a good sign. It was moist and tender, though not particularly smokey. Even so, I enjoyed it more than the brisket and sausage, which I would have guessed the reverse when ordering. The brisket was on the dry side and kind of bland, it did not smack of being freshly carved. The Stubbs BBQ sauce helped me eat some of it... now I see why they are famous for their sauce. I had a couple bites of the sausage and pushed it aside, I didn't enjoy their recipe on that at all. It was cooked seemingly well, but the blend of spices and meat they use wasn't pleasant to me. The sides, the onion rings were very crispy which I like, but again... something in the batter. Maybe even the oil they were cooked in, I did not enjoy as much. The spinach was actually quite enjoyable, maybe even a little rich. I think if it were warmer, if might help milden out some of that. It was really thick. The cornbread wasn't worth the add-on. No sweetness or anything to make it memorable. Vessel for butter. The portion was massive, and I had leftover food, but did not take it... and that would have been the case even if I wasn't headed to the airport. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

When I tell you these ribs were a religious experience I am not embellishing. Take this review as someone who really enjoys BBQ (and any slow cooked meat for that matter) but who could not list more than 10 BBQ restaurants they have eaten at in the last 5 years. So the beef ribs. Great texture, tender meat but still had a bite to it. Expertly seasoned so they were not wet with sauce but still moist. I would consider 1 beef rib a snack, 2 a small meal. I also tried the chopped brisket (brisket and burnt ends sitting in a soup of BBQ sauce). That was also delicious (and more reasonably priced), but I could have done with slightly less sauce. It really was like a soup and while the sauce was tasty, there was too much of it. I went later in the afternoon (around 2/2:30pm) and got their last two beef ribs so going earlier is better. I always heard great praise for the brisket from Franklin's and am happy to be able to admit that they have some of the best. As someone who doesn't typically enjoy lean cuts, their leans came out juicier than some place's fattiest cuts. On the fatty cuts, the meat was very well rendered, and it remained succulent! I will say I was expecting more flavoring from bark, but it was very much a "taste the essence of the quality of craftsmanship of this meat" rather than an emphasis of seasoning. While very well prepared, I did need some bbq sauce to make it hit. I enjoy ribs from a couple other spots more than I did from Franklin's, but ya can't do it all. From the beginning, both Chris (The Owner and Master Pit Man) and Elizabeth to be extremely professional and prompt. Any questions or changes needed on the quote, they were on top of anything we needed. The day of the event, they arrived early as they said they would and set up quickly. The aroma of the food was wonderful throughout our venue. We had a handful of vegetarian/vegan employees and the offer a smoked vegetable tray with corn tortillas as one of their options. The food we chose was a 3 meat plate with 3 sides and cookies for the dessert. We chose Brisket, Turkey and Sausage. For the sides, we had Gouda Mac and Cheese, Creamed Corn and Beans. Everything was extremely delicious and the feedback I gathered from numerous employees was nothing but positive reviews on the food. They even allow us to KEEP the leftover food! This was awesome as we had a few bbq quotes that STATED that we could not keep the leftover food! Overall, our experience with them far exceeded our expectations and I would recommend them for your catering needs!
