I will say this, the best sweet tea I have had in a long time. Was pretty busy inside yet, not too noisy. They do have ample parking and some outdoor seating. The fires were hot and very fresh. Nicely seasoned. You can also get curly fries or sweet potato ones too. I did the El Jefe, J and as warned after I ordered it was huge and it truly was! Oh man this might my new favorite burger in town we ordered the smoked burger and the smashed burger both amazing but if you had to choose one I would go for the smoked burger. Service is order at the counter ( or online).there are plenty of dining tables inside and one large picnic style table with an umbrella for shade outside. We've been on a mission to explore Austin's burger scene recently, and today we ended up at Moreno Burger Co on the South side. Moreno is first a BBQ spot (and a damn good one at that), and they recently started a Burger exclusive off-shoot where they cook up both sloppy salty smash burgers as well as decadent half-pound brisket burgers. Both options are awesome, and hell yea to two different types of tallow fried fries! Scoring was as follows: Presentation - 3/5 Quality - 4/5 Taste - 4/5 Overall - 4/5 They are open Wednesday - Sunday, which I believe allows them to focus and maintain high quality (ingredients, service, etc.). Speaking of service, the staff was incredible when we visited! Super friendly and helpful. It is counter service, but they did go above and beyond. Location is alright... just off busy Menchaca, but at least it's accessible! The only major feedback we had was as follows: - Could have had a better more substantial bun. - Would have enjoyed a "special sauce" on it! - Presentation could overall have been cleaner - Maybe reduce the size of the half pound patty a touch. First of all, great location for a neighborhood joint. Plenty of seating, a good number are outside, which I love. Vibes are the classic Austin, kind of grungy, but not gross, casual spot that says, "Do you want to eat good food or not? We're not here for instagram pics." As other have noted, this was previously Moreno BBQ (my new favorite BBQ in Austin, having dethroned Terry Blacks), and when they moved to the new BBQ location, they made this their burger joint. I'm so glad they did. Burgers use to be available at Moreno BBQ like, one day a week a think? Maybe a Sunday special? So, we never got to try them. Anyway, TBH, this is a slightly weird review, because I didn't get a burger. I got frito pie. A truly MASSIVE portion of frito pie. It was absolutely lovely, but I would plan to share it with someone if I ordered it again. My husband and nephew both got burgers, and were wowed by them, so I'll have to get one next time. We arrived on a Friday afternoon. The place is not too big, so even a small crowd makes it look full. We must have hit the jackpot because there was zero line, and we were able to order immediately, yasss! There is inside and outside seating. And it was clearing out as went to sit, so we were able to locate seats easily. Service- easy breezy. We were served and seated immediately with our food. Staff were friendly. I think we even got some free samples while in line as well. Food- we basically ordered 4 meats and 4 sides total. We did this so we could try more of there menu. I'm so glad we did it this way. The brisket/sausage was juicy and tender. The gouda mac & cheese (while not my preference of preparation) was pretty yum! Left stuffed. I had been meaning to try the Hamburger Happy Hour, which takes place on Thursday and Friday 3pm - 6pm, but I never made it. I didn't want to go alone. My brother in town visiting last week provided the perfect opportunity; he loves to try the "cattle" in Austin. I was particularly interested in the Smashburger; that is my favorite type of burger. I've tried making them myself but had never tried one at a restaurant. L The smashburger was smashing indeed! They cook it with embedded caramelized onions and pickles. So yummy, and the meat is piled high. Even the burger without the bun (I'm gluten free, so I don't eat bread) is filling. The happy hour includes a combo: burger, fries and drink. I don't usually get fries, but they make it worth your while because it's cheaper than just getting the burger: $15 for the combo vs. $18 for the burger alone. The fries were excellent as well: thick and slightly crispy, with just the right amount of salt. I ate the whole order, which is unusual for me. I felt guilty but knew I would burn the calories off the next day during my long run. I didn't have to eat dinner and wasn't hungry until the next day. They bring the food to the table pretty quickly, considering the number of people there also for the happy hour. In short, I was happy to have finally gone there for the happy hour. It's hard to live up to hype, but all I've heard is I have to try this smashburger. Holy smokes did it deliver! Best one in ATX that I've had (granted I haven't tried that many) - incredible. Also the gouda mac is probably the best I've had here. The whole menu looks fun and and I'd like to try more of it, but odds are I'll keep comin for the smashburger. Brisket taco and pulled pork tacos very solid. Only thing I will have to ding em for are the fries - not sure if it was just the batch as they were cooked perfectly, but wayyyy too much seasoning and too salty and I had to throw most away - that is something that doesn't happen very often (me throwing away fries). I'm the guy who will complain fries are terrible while shoveling them in my face like an elephant. So hopefully that was just an overzealous sprinkle with the seasoning. Moreno's was the second stop on our Austin BBQ tour. Truth be told, I had never heard of them before, but they did make Texas Monthly's Top 100. That's a big deal in a state known for BBQ. We also saw on social media they have one of the best smash burgers in town. After a somewhat disappointing first stop, we were hoping Moreno Barbecue would make up for it and that they did. It is located in a South Austin neighborhood in a very unassuming building. The space inside is small and you may need to share a table with strangers like we did. They do have some seating outside but it faces a busy street and then of course there's the sun. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Like our first stop, we wanted to share a platter, but this time we ended up getting two since everything looked and smelled so good. We ordered brisket, pork belly, ribs, and jalapeno cheese sausage. All the meats were delicious. Brisket looked a little on the dry side but it actually wasn't. No sauce was needed as the bark on the meat gave it all the flavor it needed. Sausage has just the right amount of snap and the jalapeno and cheese did not overpower the beefy, porky goodness. What sets them apart is that they use gouda inside instead of your typical cheddar sausage. My favorite meat though was the pork belly. I don't know what they had in that rub, but it was delicious. It was melt in your mouth goodness. For our sides we went with gouda mac, potato salad, Crawford Bach charro beans, and green beans. The mac was nice and cheesy and the use of gouda is much appreciated by me. The charro beans was also one of my faves. You could tell they take their time with it and let all the flavors soak in. The green beans and potato salad were good, but nothing special about them. If you want something different, they also have things like nachos, burgers, sandwiches, tacos and much more. I'm glad we took a chance on this place as it isn't usually mentioned when talking about the Austin greats. Moreno is definitely a top contender in my book. I definitely want to come back and check out their famous burger on the next trip. read more

I'm so glad that Moreno Burger is in my neighborhood. I've NEVER been a fan of smash burgers because you can't order them medium rare. However, their version compensates because they have very crispy edges and lots of juiciness on a bun that doesn't exceed the necessary dimensions. Cheddar melts just right. Curly fries are good quality, and properly prepared. The other type of brisket burger they offer was good, but I prefer the smash. Two times they were out of the Philly cheese hoagie so I can't report on it. But I did try the Smashburger with fig and melted Gouda sauce, bacon and arugula arugula. It's a nice alternative, which would be improved if there was more Gouda sauce. Again, if it's the crispy edges that sell it. Side of chili seemed ordinary. So my last couple of orders were fairly large to go orders placed online (one was over $100, another almost $300) for groups of people. The first one I had ordered extra sausage, but when I got home the sausage was missing. I tried to call them but their number just goes to an automated line telling you to email them instead. To their credit, I emailed them and they apologized and offered me a refund and to throw in some sausage on my next order. This past weekend I placed the larger order, which included two of their "family packs" which are each supposed to come with two sides (so 4 sides total). When I got home I only had 3 sides. This time I didn't bother emailing because it was a minor portion of the order. This business was once running out of a food trailer has now moved into this small building where their restaurant is open each day except Monday. You can tell Moreno is a family style operation with their own bbq cooking based from family recipes and using oak offset smokers. Hours are 11am to sold out each day, except they will open at 9am on the weekend to serve breakfast tacos and other breakfast plates. Moreno serves your typical menu of Texas bbq. The brisket is smoked perfect, good seasoning and texture. Pork ribs and sausage are smoked well with awesome flavor. The menu offers many different items such as tacos served with your choice of meat on freshly made tortillas. Moreno offers also two type of burgers you can customize to your liking. Pick a thin smash burger patty or a large thick smoked 1/2lb burger patty. Add bacon, cheese, jalapenos or any other customization you want. Barbacoa served is on point, along with different sandwiches offered. Try some of their other items such as the brisket philly cheesesteak, smoked turkey club sandwich, grilled cheese, or their special chicken fried steak served during Wed- Fri evening hours. Moreno has plenty of seating indoors and outdoors in their small building. The service is very friendly, prompt and usually there is not a huge line wait so you can get in and out quickly. Sides are great with the typical items you would expect. I also enjoy their shortbread chocolate chip cookies that have a unique flavor to them. Moreno is a smaller bbq restaurant but can certainly compete with all the other bbq spots in Austin. You can tell they put a lot of effort into their cooking and it shows. I enjoy the low key style of Moreno where they put out great Texas bbq dishes with just prompt and friendly service. Its always great to visit each time and having to debate with yourself which menu item you are going to order this time.
