Stopped by Distant Relatives at Meanwhile Brewing after the Bikes and Beers race, and it was a great find. I completed my first 15 mile bike race so I was hungry. I ordered the pork ribs with black eyed peas and burnt ends, and everything was packed with flavor. The ribs were tender and well seasoned, about three in my order, and came with a tangy sauce , grilled toast plus pickled tomatoes and onions that were downright addictive. The Black Eyed Peas were bold and spicy, with chunks of smoky burnt ends mixed in. Definitely not shy on seasoning. They serve everything on compostable plates which I really appreciate. The staff was friendly and knew their stuff. They mentioned the menu rotates often, so what's on today might not be there next time. Small batch, small menu, but worth it. The truck was set up at the brewery, so there's plenty of seating--inside, shaded, or in the sun--and drinks come from the brewery itself. We saw Distant Relatives on Somebody Feed Phil and thought the food, especially the sides, looked amazing. Phil had pickled golden beets and roasted radishes. I LOVE both of those veggies, so I was pumped to go! I get that sides are seasonal, and unfortunately, those items were not on the menu when we visited. The friend that we met up with had been here before, but had not eaten at this food truck. It's housed in a really cool space adjacent to a large brewery. The outdoor area is fantastic! SO many benches, beautiful trees, lots of shade, play areas for kids, and a few stages. My friend said they have live music often and she loves hanging out there. She ordered a brisket sandwich, and we ordered chicken (bummed they didn't have turkey), brisket, spare ribs, pickled okra, and their black eyed peas with burnt ends. She said her sandwich was fine, and she didn't seem wowed. Our food? Honestly, forgettable. We maybe ate 1/2 of all the food we got. The brisket itself was cooked nicely, had a good mix of lean and fat. Solid amount of smoke on the bark. Compared to the other meats this was very traditional, but the spicy mustard it was served with was a little different and really tasty. Excited to come back and try some of the less Texas traditional meat offerings they have The peanuts were just as fantastic as I was hoping for. The spice isn't too heavy, but definitely builds as you eat more. I could see this not working as a standalone side for some, but if you like your spice and peanuts, this is a must try. Came here during my 3 hour layover in Austin per my cousin suggestion. I had the sampler plate that had the chicken, ribs, brisket sandwich. Everything was pretty good a bit salty. My favorite things were the sando I loved the slaw on it and surprisingly the chicken. I'm not a huge fan of BBQ chicken but it was still moist wasn't dry and very flavorful. Service was good he was patient with me and suggested the sampler (that wasnt on the menu) so that I can try everything!! I apperciate that. We were at meanwhile last Sunday and I remember hearing about this place on a list of best new bbq spots so they won out over the other food trucks. We got the ribs ($14) and chicken $6) and both were delicious. I was especially surprised how good the chicken was but it was enough for me and my fiance to split and feel content. One word wow! After trying Distant Relatives for the first time I can easily say this is one of the best bbq joints in the city. The menu is small but precise and definitely packs a punch when it comes to flavor profiles. I tried their pulled pork out while my partner tried the quarter chicken. The pulled pork was delicious and had the right amount of salt to it without being overpowering and had a great spicy bbq sauce to add to the flavor. I paired it with some black eyed peas that had bursts of burnt ends for surprises along with the best collard greens I've ever had outside of my own family's! There name lives up to the hype as while I was scarfing down their food I couldn't help but be transferred back to my great aunts cooking during the holidays. Especially proud to see African American flavors be highlighted here and for the rest of Austin to try. I honestly can't believe they haven't got their own brick & motor location as I would be a regular patron but for now their the best kept secret food truck at Meanwhile Brewing. For a food truck (trailer) @ this brewery's adjacent food truck park. there wasn't a bad thing to say about it except the anxious wait. Their mustard butter sauce was warm and delectable with the brisket. OH, the brisket...probably the best one I've had yet and I'm not joking. Could've been cut another inch thicker and still accordion tender! The bark with gracious smoke ring made each bite 'wanna' smack whoever was sitting next to you. And the pulled pork just literally was like melted meat, juicy & ribbons of flavor in every morsel. The BBQ sauce can kick your sinuses into next gear but perfectly and not overly so. First we gotta talk about the sides!! The best collard greens I've ever had. It was made in a stew with some meat and sweet potatoes. Absolutely delicious, I'd come back just for this. I was looking for the spot because my mapping app put me in some random business park. The pro tip I should have known was that I should have just looked for Meanwhile Brewery. They are one of the food trucks in their outdoor park. So if you look around and are lost, now you know the trick. For the second time this morning, I found myself 1st in a Top 50 BBQ joint. Didn't know which to appreciate more: the day after Christmas gifts continuing or the love of a noon opening. When ordering they take your cell phone to text you when ready. That was new to me. Usually it's right there. Good way to change things up maybe. Or enjoy a beer while you wait. I went with the ribs which were fantastic. Juicy, tasty and a lot in there for a 1/2 pound. Definitely different flavor than most and I really liked it. Maybe my imagination, but I can't describe the difference. I also got some of the GroundNut Chili, loved the flavor. Very exotic. But the heat ran me off after a 1/2 dozen bites. I'm not a hard core chili head, but I like some spice. This did me in. The ribs had some serious heat, these more so. Next up was the spicy smoked peanuts. Loved them! I was worried after the other two, but maybe they were running short if seasoning. Been waiting so long to try this place. Why? Because every time I've come they are either closed or sold out. On me I'm sad that it took me this long to come. However the wait was very worth it the service was great because they were knowledgeable with recommendation and were kind. The brisket was paired superbly with the side sauce. Buttery and bright at the same time which I enjoyed. I loved the smoked peanuts which in my opinion was the gift that kept on giving large portion great for sharing if you're with someone else. The menu is limited, and the sides in particular subject to change with the turn of the seasons. Pricing is on the high side: $36 purchased a half pound of brisket (fatty end), a sausage, and sides of black-eyed peas/burnt ends and BBQ carrots. The burning question here is whether this is BBQ with an Afro-American/Caribbean flair, or Afro-American/Carib food on a limited BBQ platform. Given the heaviness of the spice in each dish that I tried, I would say the latter. At the bite, the black-eyed peas are very traditional, but at the back the flavor is overwhelmed by pepper. It is pepper that I tasted with the carrots, and with the sausage. The brisket had beautifully rendered fat, good bark, and a phenomenal pink ring, but once again a flavor profile that started as a fairly mild version of the classic central Texas rub was overwhelmed by pepper at the finish. I much prefer pepper to salt, so would happily dine here again when in the mood for heavily spiced dishes. Chicken, I suspect, would be my preferred option. read more
