I believe I have found my new go to while still getting my bbq taste. I've been trying to lay off the bbq (Texas isn't the best place for that lol) but a loaded baked potato gives me the perfect fix, and at a reasonable price. The chopped brisket loaded potato is so good! It's topped with butter, sour cream, cheese, chives and an abundance of brisket! Topped it off with True's Sweet Bbq sauce and I was in heaven. The service here is typically fast and I'm always surprised to know that they always have ribs and brisket, at any time of the day. Usually by a certain time, restaurants are out of those items. I ordered Thanksgiving dinner for my family to be picked up by me at 11am on Thanksgiving day. When I arrived at 10:50am, the manager informed me and all the other people there to pick up their family Thanksgiving dinners that they were running late. After one hour, at 11:50am, she informed me and other customers it would be one to two hours until our dinners were ready. She offered to have our dinners delivered to our homes. Ok...so second time shorting on the meat. It is 14.99 for a pound of brisket. I was questioning the accuracy of the weight because the first time was off. So decided to weigh today's order. First one, a pound of lean, came in at 15.6 the half pound of fatty came in at 7.3. I used the scale I use to weigh for baking so accuracy is a must. Now while this may not seem like a big deal, think about how many ounces that adds up between customers a day, a week, a month. I prefer it be cut and weighed in front of me and they charge over or slightly under. For 1 1/2 pounds brisket I got three packets bread. Onions and pickles in the same container ( I dislike fresh onion but like pickles, hubby loves onions) and a few small things of sauce. I ordered a medium beans as well. The beans were "fridge" cold. This was all "to go" so I had no clue until I got home and pulled everything out. I think I will forgo Texas True BBQ from now on. read more

We shop at this HEB all the time and loved to get the BBQ for takeout after we finished shopping. My wife and daughter and I were waiting for 5 mins to order to go and heard the most vulgar and disgusting words and cussing coming from the back. The bigger lady with pink hair was loud and disgusting with what she was saying. F this and f that talking about things I've never even heard at a bar, my wife could never even repeat the things being said they were so bad and inappropriate. I would never expect to here things like that at HEB and will be shopping at the Trimmier location for now on. How management can tolerate such talk is beyond me. read more

Very good BBQ in the Killeen area. We ordered the fatty brisket, turkey, pulled pork and sausage by the lb. Our side was potato salad. Everything was great except the sausage. Don't knock it until you try it...within the first 2 hours of opening. Listen, this is definitely one of those places where you feel judged for liking it because it is H-E-B bbq but during lunch time, this place feels like a hidden gem. The brisket is shockingly moist and buttery and the ribs (though not the most tender) have a nice, peppery rub that is down right addicting. They also have three types of bbq sauces (all on the thicker side) that I wish they would bottle and sell. If you like to grab a quick brisket sandwich from Bucee's, this brisket is scores above that. Warning: This place does a complete 180 towards dinner time. By late afternoon/dinner, every thing is soooo dry and tastes exactly how you think a grocery store would produce bbq. It's downright terrible. Pulled pork was sheer and utter bliss due to the juicy texture and gorgeous flavor melding together in harmony. The macaroni and cheese was of chef quality perfection I've only had macaroni and cheese that good once before in my lifetime. The green beans are an acquired taste but are rather delicious. Very disappointed on a couple of fronts. Purchased a pound of brisket and a pound of chopped brisket. Asked for bread, pickles, onions and sauce. Got home and found 4 slices of bread and enough pickles and onions for maybe one sandwich. As for sauce, none whatsoever. The sliced brisket was uniformly grey in color, but had a good flavor. Judging from the resulting bloat, some of that flavor may have been due to the super salt, monosodium glutamate. But that flavor crutch is unfortunately pretty common in BBQ. I'd probably not even have bothered with a review if I hadn't dropped just shy of $40 and got shorted on the side items. Anyway... that was my experience. Here's wishing you a better one. True Texas BBQ is the barbecue place in the HEB on Stan Schlueter Loop. HEB restaurants are never bad. They do vary from outstanding to meh. The Jewish Deli in their Austin Far West store is outstanding. Some of the Central Market cafes are meh. * * * True Texas BBQ is meh. However, they do make True Texas BBQ - and all Texas Barbecue is worth having. Lone Star cuisine would have to be pretty bad to get only a Lone Star from Yelp. This is three stars - and even better if you make generous use of the sauces. * * * What is good here? Start with two repeats. Repeat 1) Its Texas Barbecue. Repeat 2) They have great sauces. Strong Point 3) They have a great lineup of microbrews. There are only 8 to pick from but they are all superlative choices. They have cans and bottles of other stuff in the cooler. If you can't find a beer you like here, you are being way too fussy. * * * What are weak points here? 1) The brisket has a good char but only intermediate amounts of taste. On the plus side, if you order fatty, it is nice and fatty. 2) The sausage needs major improvement. I doubt they make their own - and their commercial provider is kind of mediocre. 3) They serve you in awful plastic trays that make you feel like you are eating on an airplane. 4) The menu is one of those aggravating screens flip on screens flip off electronic extravaganza menus. In return for giving you an entertaining show, you do NOT get to see everything on the menu, unless you are lucky enough to look when your dish comes flashing on. Why does anybody tolerate these things? Do they think that hiding things on your menu increases sales or makes customers happy? 5) Side dishes are that's nice dear. Pickles and onions have to be asked for explicitly. (Barbecue without pickles and onions is like Texas without religion.) * * * For me, the standout issue is the sausage. But if the sauce is good, you can eat cardboard and still have a decent meal. And before you start complaining about barbecue, Think about those poor children in BOSTON Who have to go to bed every night with NO BARBECUE AT ALL! * * * So thank the Good Lord for the Barbecue you have, Clean your plate and mind your manners. Texas grocery chain does BBQ. Anywhere else other than Central Texas, this would be a five star BBQ location with a crowd. And it's still above average, but with definite room for improvement. First of all, let's hit the really good things. The counter staff is friendly and the service is quick. There's also a self-serve area for drinks and condiments. (Lemon for the iced tea would be welcome, though.) There are three sauces, all of which are good enough to be bottled and sold. I was a big fan of their Texas themed sauce which was slightly thicker than average and had a nice kick. The sweet sauce also had a nice flavor. And my dining companion also said good things about the vinegar based sauce when mixed with the sweet sauce. I also enjoyed the cornbread that I ordered as a side with my two meat plate. My dining companion also spoke highly of the creamed corn. As far as entrees go, the St. Louis pork ribs were excellent and compared favorably to most BBQ purveyors, especially with the slightly sweet (and sticky) glaze on them. Now on to the slightly more critical aspects. First, the sausage was slightly greasy. Next, both of us were underwhelmed by the brisket. Parts of mine weren't well cut and both of us noticed a distinct lack of smoke flavor. As far as cutting, only one morsel of brisket had much bark on it. Needless to say, that was by far the most flavorful piece of brisket we had. The mac and cheese was also good at the beginning but began to congeal into a cool mess as our meal went on. Today was my first time back since they first opened and man am I disappointed. I ordered the one meat plate with brisket and chose cornbread and creamed corn as my sides. The two stars are literally only because the guy that took my order was half way friendly and because it was fairly fast. Then again how long can it take to slap exactly two pieces of barely lukewarm brisket into a plastic container, no sauce either. The creamed corn wasn't creamy but kind of slimy and other than that pretty unseasoned. The cornbread was alright but also more on the flavorless side.
