Today was my first time back since they first opened and man am I disappointed. I ordered the one meat plate with brisket and chose cornbread and creamed corn as my sides. The two stars are literally only because the guy that took my order was half way friendly and because it was fairly fast. Then again how long can it take to slap exactly two pieces of barely lukewarm brisket into a plastic container, no sauce either. The creamed corn wasn't creamy but kind of slimy and other than that pretty unseasoned. The cornbread was alright but also more on the flavorless side. I'm actually kind of sad because the first time I want everything was amazing. Not sure if they just had a bad day today or if the place went down the drain but at this point I don't think I'll be willing to find out. read more

This place is a nice little spot in HEB! We ordered loaded baked potato with brisket and Mac n cheese with pulled pork. The meat was moist, very tasty! The sweet tea was good too. Doubtful it measures up to True Texas BBQ. Nothing fancy. Ordered the large pulled pork sandwich. Nice that it comes with pickles and sliced onions. Portion size was generous. Pork itself was ok and not full of fat. Flavor was mediocre, the sauces available were good and definitely enhanced the pork. For the price it's not bad. I stopped in for lunch after hearing good things for a few months. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich (large), a small potato salad, and a medium drink. The menu was clean and bright and easy to navigate. The cashier was friendly and quick. The cost was slightly less than I'd anticipated. My food showed up just a couple of minutes after I finished filling my drink. The pulled pork sandwich was perhaps the best I've ever tasted (certainly *among* the best). The potato salad was fine (nothing wrong with it, but nothing special either). The restaurant was clean and the staff competent. We had the turkey, lean brisket, and chopped beef. We went a couple hours before closing and they were out of macaroni and cheese. If you ask for ribs on the two meat plate it's an extra $2.50. The young lady at the register asked if I wanted bread, pickles, and onions with my order to which I replied "yes. How do you not have pickles and onions with great Texas Barbeque?" True Texas BBQ is a great option to have in the area - I'm glad they're putting them in HEBs around the state. There are a few better places to go locally for particular dishes/meats, but overall, this is always a solid choice. We couldn't decide what to go with, so I had three meats and my wife chose another two. We weren't able to try the sausage, because they were out, but every other meat was delicious. Decent selection of sides, too, and you can always take care of some light grocery shopping while waiting for your food to be ready, since it takes about 10-15 minutes. The only reason I give it a 4 is if you get the 1/2 lb sliced brisket sandwich, the sandwich bun is useless because it's flaky white and falls apart upon looking at it, because it's a cheap-flaky-nobody-wants-to-eat-this-crap-bun...the kind you know you LL get in a fast food daftsrive through, yuck. It would be great to know if the BBQ sauce is high fructose corn syrup in disguise. It probably is, because HEB sells lots of it. Bonus points for the draft beers on tap. 8 of them. My favorite is evil catfish IPA. $4.50 a pint. Local pubs everywhere including Austin should take note: $4.50, not $6.00. per pint. read more

Lunch at True Texas BBQ did not disappoint. Ordered the brisket plate with coleslaw and green beans. Fork tender, moist, flavorful brisket was a welcome change from the dry servings I've had at other bbq places. The coleslaw was crunchy and seasoned perfectly, not drowned in dressing. The green beans were perfectly seasoned and cooked just right, not cooked to deathly mush. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Went for the groceries and stayed for the bbq. I love the baked potato. This is the only place I can find in Killeen, TX that have decent sized baked potatoes. The tea is also great and it's not too sweet. The atmosphere is nice and it's good to see a restaurant inside of HEB so I do not have to shop hungry. First time to try True Texas bbq. When we got in there was no line. Probably 2 person ahead of us. We ordered (2) 3 meat plate. We chose ribs, fatty brisket and sausage. For our sides my son chose mac n cheese and bread pudding while I chose brisket beans and potato salad. We're excited to try it since everyone was raving about how good it was. Soooo, first off with the sides. My son liked his mac n cheese and bread pudding he said it was good. But the brisket beans I had was ok.. I did not see any tidbits of brisket well I assume there's suppose to be since it is called brisket beans unless they hust use the juices of the brisket then mixed it with the beans. While the potato salad is also ok, it's bit as creamy as the usual potato salad. For the meats, the ribs were good as well as the sausage. I know everyone has a preference for the meats but we prefer the fatty brsiket because I believe it will be flavorful. I got 2 slices of briskets the first slice was good but the other one was kinda lean and I did not like it cause it's a bit chewy compared to the first slice I had. For the ribs, the part they gave me were more of bones rather than more of meat. Overall, it was good. Compared to all other barbeque places this place is not the best and it was not bad. read more

The food was just OK. I DONT understand the hype other than the convenience it offers being close to home and in HEB. I will stick to the local joints around town, much better. (Pettys, Cracked Bones, even Rudys) I got ribs, brisket w fat, and sausage which was chewy! For one side I chose peach cobbler...and it was actually peach cake! Ewww! The mac and cheese was very commercial as was all the food, and not tasty. I was not understanding the hype then and I still don't. But if you don't know your Que then......!
