Lovely experience here. Truly Sichuan offers authentic Chinese food! We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the food. Even their menus were really cool. We highly recommend the Soup Dumplings appetizer! It was so good and two orders of it could honestly be a meal of its own. They really lived up to all their achievements. They weren't stingy about their portions and they don't hold back on their flavors either! Great place to indulge on spicy, garlicky, authentic Chinese dishes. This place is absolutely above and beyond "Chinese" food we're all familiar with all over the US. I'd have to disagree with anyone who says it's the same as typical Chinese take-out. Located in the downtown of Ridgewood - great location but very rough parking situation (for the downtown in general). Truly delicious sichuan food - I loved every bite of every dish we ordered. We ordered takeout: dan dan noodles, steamed chicken dumplings, and the braised fish in chili sauce. The dan dan noodles had a light sesame flavor and was a tad on the dry/bland side - would be significantly better if it had some of that sweet chili oil in it. The steamed chicken dumpling did not specify in the description, but it did come with that addictive sweet chili oil and were terrific. The braised fish in chili sauce had a different red chili sauce that had more of an authentic peppercorn flavor to it - the overall dish was more like a stew. Friendly and attentive staff. The price point is a little bit higher than other restaurants I've been too but probably on par for the area it is in. The interior is very oriental and looks very nice, we were able to sit by the window which was nice. The soup dumplings were a bit larger than most places and very flavorful but you only get 5 in an order. read more

Just checked out Truly Sichuan for the first time. The restaurant is in the middle of trendy Ridgewood. The decor is modern and pleasant, the staff is friendly and helpful. We selected soup dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, and steamed dumplings with chicken for appetizers. All were very flavorful and tasty. For dinner the kids had lo mein and sesame chicken, both were quite good. For the adult main courses we had the Sichuan Lamb and Whole Grilled Tilapia. Each dish featured the tingle of Sichuan peppercorns. The lamb was extremely tender and the fish was perfectly moist. The owner checked in with us to make sure everything was going well and to speak about the food. We could tell she takes pride in her restaurant. Note to people just looking quickly: Don't expect chili oil ladened food here. Good duck. Excellent fish. OK appetizers. I was a bit hesitant even with seeing the glowing reviews for yet another Chinese place in Bergen County, especially for Sichuan food. The places outside of here range from just OK to terrible. This place helps change that opinion though. I was here with two others and we ordered a bunch of dishes. The staff here is very friendly and the owner is very nice. Their philosophy here is taste but also less oil then other places so don't expect the chili oil laced dishes you'll find in Flushing or otherwise. For appetizers, we got the hot and sour soup as well as the Chonquing noodles. The hot and sour was good with a nice amount of wood-ear mushroom though it could have been a bit spicier or have more ginger. The chonquing noodles were a bit less successful. They had good sesame flavor though I'd appreciate some other vegetables such as pickled mustard greens in there (or more pieces bok choy.) It felt a bit too plain. I personally got the smoked tea duck while the other two people got chicken with (spicy) garlic sauce and breaded fish filet (with spicy Sichuan sauce I believe.) For the duck, the portion size was quite big and there was a pronounced smoke flavor. The meat was juicy and tender without as much fat you usually see in the dish though the skin was still moist. I'd recommend ordering it for a group as we did. The spicy breaded fish was the unexpected star. There was a nice strong yet balanced Sichuan peppercorn heat to it with a nice touch of I believe garlic or something similar. The portion size as per the other dishes was good. I'd highly recommend it in short. The chicken with spicy garlic sauce was similar to other places though with a couple key differences. The chicken was moister and the broccoli/other vegetables didn't feel like a throwaway as they were properly prepared and quite tasty as well (in particular the broccoli.) I'd stick with a low 4 if this was in NYC and note the unique lack of extra oil but this is an actual good Sichuan/Chinese place in Bergen County which is unheard of up till this point. They know what they want to accomplish and they do it right. Excellent place and I hope they continue to succeed. 4.6 for the area. read more

Food here is actually pretty good but the portion was very small for the price charged. Not your regular Americanized Chinese food. Food was not sweetened like other places. We came here and got a few take out. We got the fish fillet in chili sauce, crispy shrimp with crispy garlic opinion and the Chongqin hot noddles. And the fish fillet and the crispy shrimps were pretty good. But the portion again was very small. There was hardly any fish fillet in it and it was severed with bunch of lettuce on the bottom to fill the small container. The crispy shrimp only had 8 shrimps and they were not your jumbo shrimp but your regular size ones that looked bigger from all the breading. It was served over a bunch of onion and garlic fried flakes to fill the small container again. The Chongqin hot noddle was disappointing. Very bland and portion was extremely small for nearly 9 dollars charged. Overall, i probably won't patronized this place again read more

Stopped by for late lunch on Christmas - it was the only restaurant open for business in Ridgewood! Decor and ambiance was "they tried" but didn't quite make it classy, but well, that's okay if that's not what they're trying to do here. Steamed pork dumpling in sichuan pepper sauce ($6.95, 4/5) - Good appetizer for the price. I do wish the meat was larger and one dumpling had the ball of meat slip out of the skin, but it's actually quite authentic. Sauce was not overpowering and skin was chewy. Good pick. Beef chow fun ($11, 3/5) - Tasty beef but slightly too fatty. Noodle was chewy but overall it was a bit blend. Nothing the hot chili oil + soy sauce combo cannot fix, though. It did the job as the "base" to this meal. Shredded pork in garlic sauce ($16.95, 5/5) - Entree. I ordered this based on the picture looking so good, and I was not disappointed. The dish has a bright sweet bouquet with crispy bamboo shoots and delicious pork strips. Sauce was robust, sweet, savory, with hint of heat - it was just what I wanted. Renee the owner came by to chat with us and she explained the challenge of trying to do authentic sichuan in a primarily caucasian suburb in north jersey - she had to hire a good sichuan chef and pay premium + provide transportation daily from flushing area. Definitely tough uphill battle since Ridgewood is discerning, but not THAT discerning in terms of understanding authentic Chinese food. But that is why I really appreciate what she's trying to do here and would recommend diners to check this place out, with an open mind to explore authentic Sichuan cuisine. If I may make a recommendation, I'd say go for classier look (take off the printed yelp reviews on the front glass wall and how about laminate select few reviews and put them on the wall behind the cash register?). Also, though might be expensive, having a small bar introducing good bai ju and small selection of good wine and beer, would go a long way in pleasing more of the western clientele you're trying to attract. There aren't a ton of authentic Sichuan restaurants in Bergen County. So this was a welcome addition to the neighborhood. While I wouldn't say the menu is 100% authentic Sichuan, it's close enough in my opinion given the alternative. The food here was quite good for the most part. I came here with a party of 8 and we tried a bunch of dishes from the menu. A few of my favorite dishes were the sliced ox tongue/tripe, fish fillet casserole, and braised tofu w/ shiitake. We ordered the szechuan fish, Qiong Ching chicken and chicken lo mein (for my kid who can't eat spicy food. Yet...) The szechuan fish was well flavored and on par with what it typically is. Not extraordinary or better than many other Szechuan places I've been to but great for a quick fix. The Qiong Ching chicken was excellent. I think that their chef prepared this dish better than most of the szechuan restaurants I've ever been to. The lo mein was fine. Nothing special. The service was just okay. We were being served by a couple of nice young adults. One of them checked up on us occasionally while the other watched for the most part. What I didn't like about the our experience was being charged $6.00 for tea without being informed that there was a charge for it and a 20% service charge for a party of two adults and two children which was added to our bill. Our bill was over $100 for these three dishes. It left a lot to be desired as far as value was concerned and the fees render this place a one time experience for me. I love this place for the Sichuan dishes. The Chong Qing Chicken and the Sichuan Lamb with Onion dishes are REALLY good. I always get them, and they are consistent and satisfying. The place is always empty. I think it's because the American style Chinese food is blah. Don't order fried appetizers. They are always greasy and have that bitter taste of the dirty, poisonous fry-oil. The waitress is always really sweet. Worth a shot if you are into the Sichuan dishes. read more

Decor inside could use some work as i am a clean freak. Price for the food? Way too much. Ordered 3 dishes and 2 apps and came out to over $100+ including tip. WARNING, if you use credit card, they will charge you 4% fee which was calculated with tax included. I mean, who in what age doesn't use credit card. Perhaps that is why the restaurant was empty? There aren't many Szechuan food places in northern NJ that I am aware of, so Truly Sichuan is the place I go to when I'm craving this particular kind of Chinese cuisine. The food is good, the service can be slow, but i've always been seated right away regardless of when I've gone, and it's BYOB (I would definitely take advantage of it as I personally don't like the taste of their water, maybe it's tap, not really sure...). Every dish I have ever tried here has been yum, and there is nothing on the menu I would not recommend. Their Chongqing Spicy Diced Chicken, and Braised Fish w. 3.5 I'm a huge fan of Szechuan food so I was really excited to try this spot. I came with my family for a Sunday night dinner. Now granted, in the interest of full disclosure, I wouldn't eat the same things around my family as I normally would if they're not around (i.e. no pork). So, I didn't get the full experience here, which I'm pretty bummed about. If I were to come back, I would definitely get the soup dumplings right away and the Dan Dan Noodles. I ended up getting Chicken with Garlic Sauce which was good but nothing that you wouldn't get at a regular Chinese takeout spot (but at twice the price). I do think that the prices here are pretty high for what it is but I guess considering the area, it's only slightly above average. It was pretty hectic in here but not all of the tables were filled. It was still LOUD though, seems like sound really travels in here, mixed with BYOB. It seemed like there was a lot of running around but I'm not sure why. The waiters are all really nice but sometimes hard to hear/understand. Vegetarian options are pretty sparse which again, I can't really blame a Szechuan place for since that's how the cuisine is. But I do think that $17 for a plate of sauteed boy choy and nothing else is a bit much. read more

The food here is absolutely amazing! Everything is so fresh, seasoned well; and delicious. The soup dumplings are what brought us here. It's so hard to find good xiao long bao in NJ so I was really trying hard to find a good place and my research brought me here and I was so happy! They are so flavorful and juicy. What a great and SPICY find in this neighborhood! I usually have to travel further (toward Fort Lee or around Parsippany) for a solid, authentic Chinese meal. It's hard enough to find good Chinese food in general in this area, I'm surprised to find such a wonderful Sichuan place. Sichuan cuisine is one of my favorites of the many Chinese regional flavors, and this place gets the mala spice right! If you're craving some mouth-numbing spice, this place is for you. I forgot to take pictures of all the dishes, but the two that stood out to me were the fried tofu in chili sauce and a fried filet dish with hot chili peppers. The Sichuan sesame and peanut noodles were great too, and is a milder option.
