There's been a lot of recent hype about Tsunami, so we visited on Friday night. The dining room has a really cool vibe, but the acoustics are horrible, making it rather difficult to converse. The front of the house team works like well oiled machine, but our server was really not very good. We had to flag her down a couple of times. She asked my husband if we wanted another drink and then immediately left the table before I could say I wanted another, too. Never mind. We enjoy having cocktails and small plates, so we ordered 4 of the 6 appetizers and the glazed Tofu. The clams were very good, but I felt like everything else was average, at best and overpriced. Incredibly unique flavors -- sea bass sauce was unlike anything I've had and the combo with the rice and fish was amazing. Also had the mussels, calamari, dumplings, and scallops. Scallops were really good, calamari wasn't the most flavorful or crispiest I've had as the breading felt thick. Mussels were interesting, I didn't love the curry or sake but very unique! Dumplings were fine, not memorable but not bad. Also got the sorbet, very normal sorbet. They were out of ginger donuts but those sounded really good Overall a good meal, expensive but yummy! Great seafood and tapas restaurant! Located in a cool artsy part of town, the setting is cozy and elegant, and the patio seating offers a great vantage point over the entire neighborhood. I first tried their Paloma drink special, not a fan. For appetizers I tried the bacon wrapped dates; very good, although they should use bigger Medjoul dates for this Spanish tapa. I also tried the glazed pork meatballs, not a fan either. My entree was the spice crusted seared tuna on wasabi cucumber salad, excellent! Creme brûlée for dessert was a good finish. This restaurant is pricier than Yelp rating of $$ seems to indicate. I give them five stars for the creative menu, and four for the execution. read more

5 stars for service. Our waiter, Jeff, was spectacular and that is an understatement. He knew the menu A-Z and explained it without being condescending. He offered great suggestions on what to order. He was never intrusive: he knew when to talk to us and when to give us space. He treats the people at his tables as guests and friends and not just numbers on a table roster. He was genuinely nice; it wasn't plastic small talk. 3.5 stars for the food. The sea bass was perfection. Full stop. Buttery, flaky, flavorful, crispy. Perfect. The sauce was a tad salty for my personal taste but it was a good counterbalance with the blackened sticky rice. The sea bass itself did not need the sauce. The spicy shrimp potstickers were spicy with flavor and not spicy with added seasoning. (This was perfect for me as I do not like it when food is so spicy that my mouth is on fire.) Just drizzle the soy sauce over the potstuckers for an added punch of flavor. Dunking the potstickers in the soy sauce overwhelms the flavor of the filling. The black bean soup was rather bland and needed a pinch of salt. We paired it with their fresh baked bread and that enhanced the flavor. Be sure to add some of the scallions to each bite of calamari with the aioli. It adds a pleasant, unexpected flavor. Bonus: there are very few tentacle pieces in the calamari. The ginger doughnuts were rather nondescript. They are essentially warm cake with ice cream. However, if you really like coconut, these are worth trying. Creme Brule. Perfection. Really, it was perfect. We loved how thin the caramelized crust was and, unlike too many restaurants, the pastry chef didn't go crazy with his blowtorch. Just enough for the crunch-in-your-mouth feel. And the custard... in a word or two... so good! read more

Great unique dining experience in Midtown Memphis. I took my wife here for her birthday a few weeks back, and I was impressed all around. Both the dining area and bar are great atmospheres. The bartender was outstanding as well; he made a great martini and provided great wine recommendations. Our server was equally outstanding. The food was also great. It's a total neighborhood favorite. The service is such that you feel like you're at home and everyone is family. Very easygoing atmosphere with nicely muted lighting. The food does not disappoint. Many dishes are Asian-inspired, like the wasabi deviled eggs. They offer small plates and regular entrees. This is a good restaurant for fish dishes. It's a place where you won't leave totally stuffed and weighed down, but your culinary needs will still be completely satisfied. Oh. The desserts are pretty good. A gem of a restaurant. Always fantastic, always delicious. Perhaps the freshest and best prepared fish dishes in town. I haven't had anything that wasn't delicious. The people are lovely and the service is attentive. The setting is intimate and great for having a date or double date. read more

In the spirit of full disclosure: I almost never leave reviews, I simply don't care enough to take the time. I make an exception here! I can do a business dinner at most restaurants in town. I am totally ok with it and I think they do a decent job. Tsunami sets high expectations but fails to deliver in legendary ways! I had a bad feeling immediately as we walked in. Sticky floors, unappealing smell, I knew we should have walked right out of there. The rest was downhill from there. Cutting to the chase: the food is flavorless and basically inedible. The chef is fixated on cheap cabbage and 1000-Islands dressing that are used everywhere. Prices are disproportionate for the quality. You can get better food, literally anywhere for a small fraction of the price. My conclusions: tsunami is run as a pure money-making operation with zero care or passion for food. I would humbly suggest to at least run a floor cleaning machine once a week. The floor is almost as disgusting as the food! read more

It had been a while since we had eaten at Tsunami, but it is still our favorite restaurant in Memphis. Food, service and atmosphere are great. Very attentive staff and were quick to accommodate a request. We had salads that were good and ordered the Tsunami style oysters Rockefeller which were some of the best I have ever had. Also had the Spicy shrimp potstickers and as always the Sake steamed mussels in Thai red curry sauce with extra bread so I didn't leave any of the delicious broth. Finished the meal with my favorite dessert at Tsunami the Ginger donuts with coconut sorbet which I tell all my friends is the best dessert in Memphis. It is so awesome that Ben Smith has been able to maintain this level of food and service since 1998. read more

With full confidence, I can say you will have a Taste Experience at Tsunami. Each dish is artfully and thoughtfully prepared, and the waitstaff is professional and knowledgable. Maybe it goes unsaid, however, the idea with Tsunami is not to gorge oneself. The portions are modest. In fact, I encourage visitors to order a few different items to share because of the exquisite Taste Experience. My party of three started with the bacon wrapped dates that, I swear to god, melted in our mouths. We also enjoyed red curry mussels and wasabi deviled eggs. I expected to enjoy the mussels and dates but whoa: the slight tinge of wasabi with the cool, smooth egg yolk are matches made in Heaven. You will be pleasantly surprised. We followed that up with the red snapper and red pepper sauce along with the saucy shrimp. I found the shrimp slightly tough, but the snapper was divine. The food is consistently OUTSTANDING; presentations that catch the eye with unique little details and flavor profiles that excite your taste buds and warm the soul. By the way, the menu says Small Plates, but the serving are really a bit more than a medium-size plate. Service is always friendly, engaging, and professional; even on a busy night. For dinner we enjoyed: Crispy Calamari with Chipotle aioli, Black Bean Soup with Smoked Chile Cream, Whole-leaf Caesar Salad with Garlic Croutons (a unique presentation of a classic salad), Seared Sea Scallops with Bangkok Curry and Black Thai Rice, and a Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée (it was HEAVENLY). read more

I feel compelled to leave this review so that there's an opinion other than what I've seen written. The service was good, props to our waitress who checked on us and was very attentive throughout our meal. However the food was underwhelming. We got the calamari and the meatballs for appetizers. Calamari was not fresh. The pieces of meat were very small, but the overall portion was large. The batter had little seasoning/flavor, but the sauce was good. We did not finish the calamari. The meatballs were small, about the size of a quarter. The flavor was good, but not great. It didn't seem like there was much thought or care in the meatballs. Entrees were: (the famous) roasted sea-bass ($40), roasted salmon($24), and fish tacos ($24). The sea-bass seemed pan fried in a good bit of oil, or otherwise "roasted" in oil. It was hard to shake the oil. The sauce on the bass was tasty. The portion was small, hard to determine size but we guess under 4oz. We peaked at another table's coming out, it seemed larger. The roasted salmon was cooked in a similar fashion. It was hard to taste the salmon from the oil. The polenta was tasty, the green beans were cooked well. The red sauce we did not like, it was lacking flavor and a bit sweet. The fish tacos (2) were good but not worth $24. The small rice pilaf and black beans did not contribute much, but all was eaten to satisfy the hunger. All-in-all, I appreciate the effort that was made by the front staff and the kitchen, but we won't be returning. read more

For a restaurant that I fell in love with the first time I came, I have really been disappointed as of late at Tsunami (and well, really the entire Cooper Young area but that's for a different time). During this last experience, I took a good friend of mine and her family here to celebrate her graduation because she loves Asian Fusion seafood, but I was left wanting much more. Three of us at the table ordered the Lemongrass Shrimp Pasta, and I swear there was maybe 15-20 pieces of penne pasta. 15-20. Are you kidding me, Tsunami? The shrimp were fantastic, as was the sauce actually, but you skimped out on the actual pasta...? That makes zero sense and comes across in really poor style. I'm a pretty slow eater, and I was done in 5-10 minutes tops. I legit stopped at McDonald's on the way home for some french fries to feel like I ate a full meal. I'm not sure what that's about, but I've had better portion sizes at fancy five-star restaurant x where you order a finger snack for $30. Though I've generally had good service there as well, that night wasn't all that great either. Lackluster all around. Must've been a bad night altogether. Get it together, Tsunami; I don't want to scratch y'all off the list of decent places to eat in Memphis. read more

We've been going to Tsunami since they opened over 20 years ago. Have spent many a special dinner there. 2-tops and 10-tops. We, of course, had old favorites. When the menu changed during COVID, the first time we went back, it was a bit disconcerting. But our last trip just drove home the point to us of how special a place Ben Smith has put together. Attentive service, great food. What's not to love? My husband and I had a lively date night there, and although it was full it was still quiet enough we could enjoy our conversation. He had the Manhattan Cut steak ywith caramelized onion cream, mashed potatoes and green beans, and I had the seared shrimp with Brussels sprout risotto and smoked tomato beurre blanc. This is an excellent restaurant that tries to accommodate those of us with food allergies. Hard-to-find in restaurants, even today. The service is excellent, the food is delicious. I had the tuna with wasabi dressing and cucumber salad and my husband had the scallops. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and very high-quality. The flavors were really delicious. For dessert we had the root beer float with coconut cream sorbet. I walked away a happy camper and so thankful that they graciously made some changes to my main course to make it something that I could have.
