I stopped into Tulsi the other night with my son. We were both super hungry BUT had tickets to an event across the street in an hour and I was skeptical that we would be able to get in and out of this busy spot and still make it to the concert on time. Surprisingly, when we walked in, we were seated right away and our server made a connection with us within minutes. We ordered: Two mango lassis - excellent, not overly sweetened, perfect balance. Onion stuffed nan - always good wherever I get this, how can you go wrong?? Chicken Saag - also good, a few additional interesting spices than i've had at tother places, including a chewy pod of some sort, not bad, just not used to it. Butter Chicken-solid *I have been trying to find the old-school red onion chutney served for YEARS in so many spots along with the tamarind and the mint. I saw red onion on the menu and asked the server if it was the chutney, they said yes and it turned out to be a plate of sliced red onion. We are frequent fliers here. I'm not terribly adventurous, but I love the Tikka Masala & the Garlic Naan. Today we went for the Sunday Buffet (11:30-2:30) and it was great to try little bits of dishes that I normally wouldn't order. We walked in and were seated right away even though we didn't have a reservation. The dining room was decorated very nicely in traditional Indian decor. Raj is the owner. He is almost always on the floor and stops by to chat with patrons. He is passionate about his food and wants you to leave satisfied. I've learned that some other Indian restaurants sweeten their dishes, or add inauthentic ingredients to appeal to the American palate. Tulsi tries to be as authentic as possible. We've been enjoying the food here at Tulsi for some time now, and happy to report that it is still just as good as we recall now that we've had a chance to return for in house dining. Takeout was also very good last winter. You should know that they are very short staffed and have posted signage accordingly and out waitress advised when we arrived. That said, we noticed no issues with food coming out from the kitchen, or from our waitress. We enjoyed the fried cauliflower, however it did seem a bit spicier/hotter than I recall on previous visits. Chicken tikka masala is one of our favorites here with buttery tender chicken and a delicious sauce, perfect to wipe up with Naan. Cocktails are very tasty here as well. The menu has not changed much, if at all over the years, but there is still plenty to explore. read more

Very authentic Indian food Hard to find a balance of medium hot versus hot but the wait staff is helpful in suggestions I would like more of a variety on the naan bread but maybe that is an American taste as we can get these varieties in other Indian restaurants. It's a Wednesday in July 2021. The pandemic is waning as people get vaccinated, but it's not over enough that I want to spend too much more time unmasked around strangers indoors. Since take-out is workable here, we chose take-out. Our first plan was to phone in our order: chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, garlic nan, and Peshawar nan. But we got a bad connection, so no luck. We tried an on-line order, and kept getting a weird error message about CAPTCHA, and gave up. My wife phoned in again, mentioned error message problem, and the person on the phone asked whether we were trying to pay with American Express. (Yes.) That's probably what was wrong. By that point, we were almost to the restaurant, so the boy and I went in to order in person. They said they weren't very busy, but the nan would still take up to 25 minutes. They asked whether we were OK with waiting in a corner at the end of the bar. We were masked, and away from other people, so no problem. I gave my phone number in case the boy got squirrelly, but he was patient enough -- and the food was ready in about 15 minutes. The food was nicely packaged for take-out. They didn't include plastic forks, which is good environmental practice. The entrees and rice were each packed in a reusable plastic container; the nan was wrapped in aluminum foil and paper. The works were in a paper bag. My palak paneer was a very mild "medium", as the guy taking the order had warned; New England medium is Seattle extra mild. My boy wouldn't have had a problem with it, but he wasn't interested in the spinach. The spices other than hot spices were very good, and nicely balanced, but also milder than I'm used to. The sauce was just a little on the runny side. The cheese was excellent. I tasted my wife's tikka masala, and it was excellent. She said that one of the pieces of chicken was quite overcooked though. Both types of nan were good too. Although we didn't get the full sit-down dining experience, I got a look inside. The atmosphere is nice. Most of the employees looked like they were not of Indian ancestry. (Nothing wrong with that; cuisine  is not restricted by ancestry. I know a good Italian restaurant owned by a Chinese family. That's why I note it as an atmosphere observation.) Take-out service was excellent. If this restaurant were in metro Seattle, up against over 200 other Indian restaurant, I might rate it only a three star "A-OK". But we're in Kittery Maine, where it's one of four or five Indian restaurants within an hour's drive. That's worth an extra star, to "Yay! I'm a fan." Thanks to the hotel desk worker (from India) who suggested it to us. read more

Although it was $23, I got enough for two full meals - when does anyone ever not finish salmon in one sitting? -The dish was a HUGE serving of marinated salmon, cooked in the tandoor oven, served with sauteed vegetables and lemon rice. This is one of our favorite restaurants! On one out of many visits we've had something not quite excellent but usually it is simply great! We started with the spinach pakora and onion bhaji. The pakora used to be shaped as balls but now are flat and it was actually better. However, the onion bhajis (which I always just love) were just a bit too thick with too much batter to onion ratio. But this is really nitpicking. We also had the pork vindaloo which is good and tasty but I have never understood the concept of a 'mild' vindaloo . I have never even dared order a vindaloo in the UK let alone India since this is supposedly one of the hottest dishes around, so why can it be requested as 'mild-. We ordered 'hot' and I barely broke a sweat. Just doesn't feel quite authentic but guess you have to go by the local -bland- American taste. Wow much rather have them give a warning that when you order a Vindaloo it is - as it should be- #&$^%, HOT Don't misunderstand me - the food here is great and tasty I just feel it's bowing a bit too much to americam tastebuds. read more

Excellent food, such a nice change from pizza, Chinese, or fast food..... the staff and customer service is amazing and always on point. The atmosphere is warm and cozy it looks like it might be cramped but it actually doesn't feel that way. The cooks definitely know what they're doing and are masters of their craft, amazing food! This place is the definition of a hidden gem 100%! I tried it just within this year for the first time and kicking myself for not trying sooner! Tulsi had been on my dad's radar for ages (he loves Indian food). He had heard they had pork vindaloo and really wanted to try it. We couldn't make a nighttime trip down here work for all of us, so we settled on checking out their lunch buffet on Sunday. We came right when they opened at 11:30 and we're glad we did - an hour later and the place was packed! The space itself is much bigger than we were expecting and has a really inviting atmosphere. The staff was all super friendly and quick to clear plates and refill water glasses. While my dad loved the buffet (he eats any and everything), it just wasn't for me. There were four vegetarian options: channa masala, green dal, naan bread, and spinach pakora. Unfortunately the naan bread was frequently unavailable and the spinach pakora just tasted like fried balls of dough. The channa masala was delicious, but not enticing enough to have more than one plate of. There are so many other things I would have loved to try off their menu that I know are probably outstanding based on the taste I've already had... the onion bhaji, the fried cauliflower, the peshawari naan, the paneer makhanwala, or the palak paneer. If I came back I would for sure come for dinner so I could explore the less mainstream options that are put out during the buffet (which I totally understand why they do) - also, HOW COOL is it that they have vegan options (aloo gobhi matar, for example) that are clearly labeled? Love it! Also - their cocktail options are amazing, so definitely splurge and get something (like the ginger martini)! I think the buffet is great if you a) like buffet culture and b) are a fan of Indian food staples you probably already know about. Heads up - the Sunday buffet (1130a to 230p) is $15 and comes with an 18% gratuity immediately added to your check; also, takeout isn't available during this time. read more

Don't let the low key exterior fool you. We're from the Boston area and this is the best Indian food we've ever had. I had the wonderful shrimp curry. I did ask for it mild and it still had a perfect kick. My husband had goat and raved about it. The garlic nan was perfect. Plus we had plenty leftovers for lunch the next day. Serving in the copper bottom bowls was an elegant touch. Our waitress, Lee, was 5 star. Thoughtful, efficient and funny. Next time we're in Kittery, I'd eat here in a heartbeat! read more

What a wonderful surprise to find this great Indian restaurant. This place would be expected to be found in New York City, Toronto or London. While it would not be the best in any of these locations it is certainly the best in possibly all of New England. The Vindaloo was perfectly spiced witch most places in NE refuse to do afraid you'll send it back and if they will they just make it hot and not achieve the wonderful balance of spice and flavor they serve here. Coming from Maryland where there were quite a few quality Indian restaurants, I have always found it difficult to find an Indian restaurant that measured up in Maine. However, Tulsi is the closest restaurant I have found that provides authentic, delicious Indian food! From the exterior, you might look beyond Tulsi, but the minute you walk in, the interior decor is authentic and welcoming. They provide a wide variety of handmade cocktails, which were very unique. I ended up ordering the ginger martini, which was really well-made. Being that we went on a Sunday afternoon, they offer a buffet on the weekends during the day, and it was consistently busy with people. However, the restaurant did an excellent job of keeping up with the busy crowd and nothing ever got empty on the buffet table. The buffet also provided a large amount of options ranging from a variety of chicken curry dishes, some vegetarian mushroom dishes, and even some lamb dishes with of course some garlic naan. The food was really delicious and I was eventually happy to have had the buffet, because I was able to try a lot of the dishes. My standouts were the cilantro chicken and this mushroom dish that I can't remember the name of. All the dishes had a little kick of heat to them, which I appreciated, and things were cooked decently. Some of the chicken dishes had chicken that was a little dry, but that's to be expected with buffet-style. Overall, this was a great Indian restaurant, and I would certainly go back again when I have an Indian craving! read more

We came here for takeout because we needed a little spice on our trip to Maine. We tried ordering online but the website was not working and kept showing an error message that our order didn't go through. Weirdly enough, my card was charged twice! We decided to call with no luck - phone was constantly busy with no answer. Then we decided to drive over and see what the deal was. The gentleman working at the counter was very polite - apologized for the mix up and said the restaurant never got our order. We waited 30 minutes for our new order which was fair given the number of people waiting. The food ended up being pretty good, and I'm saying that as an Indian. Pretty authentic tasting. Overall - food is good, service in person is good, website is awful, and overall process of calling in orders is awful. read more

The other items were randomly cooked, probably left over from dinner, with garam masala added by the truckload, no balance at all. The dessert had gone bad. Forced 18% gratuity added to already overpriced buffet (irrespective of number of diners). Service was okay at best.
