There are plenty of Indian restaurants offering basically the same menu, but this one offers a bit more choice and has great markings and options for special dietary needs. Their main entrees are built around the sauce and can be made with at least three vegetarian options: vegetables, tofu, and paneer. I didn't have room for paneer so I was happy for the choice of tofu instead, and even more happy that some of the sauces were new ones for me. I can't recall that I've ever had a vindaloo (once, maybe?), a hot and slightly sour Portuguese Indian preparation, so I jumped at the chance. As others have correctly noted, their spice levels are serious. Indian Hot was not the top level here (the top was called Cobra). I was glad I only got the Indian Hot. That was plenty of kick for me. The next table appeared to be struggling with the spiciness. Order wisely. My dish was not short on flavor though. An onion, fenugreek, and paneer bread was excellent for sopping things up, and their breads were quite soft and fluffy and seemed to be ordered by every table. I had no room for anything else, but it was an appealing menu, and a buzzing place with a lot of smaller tables. read more

Always a win at this place! By far, my favorite Indian cuisine in the area! Comparable to my days in London, Tulsi serves up quality with authentic dishes from the various regions of India. Something for everyone on this menu. The variety basket of mixed Naan is a fun addition to the table. Freshly made Mango or Rose Lassi cools the pallet. The flavorful entrées can be easily passed around the table so everyone gets to taste various meals. Rice is PERFECTLY prepared. And fantastic servers without hovering. The employees are always so kind and welcoming. We order an extra meal of paneer to share among our table. Don't miss this place. The food was very good. We started with chicken pakoras, which was tasty, and I ordered the chicken rogan josh for my entree while my partner had chicken biryani. We both thoroughly enjoyed the flavors of our dishes and the heat levels. I will say that the seating in the restaurant was a bit awkward. We were seated at a table in the middle of the floor between the booths, and the table behind us was a bit too close - the person sitting directly behind me bumped into me a couple of times while I was eating. Our server was also a bit awkward... for example, when he came back at the end of our meal, he didn't ask if we needed a box for leftovers, he simply looked at my partner, down at his plate, and back at him and didn't say a word. read more

Writing this while at Tulsi while it's fresh. It took 15 mins for them to acknowledge us at our table and this is the time it took AFTER we asked to get a waiter. We ordered samosas and chaat papri for appetizers that took 30 mins to arrive . When the chaat papri got here there was no sauce visible to me at first which they informed me was underneath. Typically (and by the menu) it's yogurt, mint sauce, & tamarind sauce.. the mint and tamarind was there but the yogurt was missing in which I went to the front (because our waiter would never check on us) to ask for some.. he then informed that yogurt doesn't come on it but he will bring it for me if I want (see menu). When he brought it out he then claimed it was on there but just not a lot of it. So he then brought out a yogurt sauce which was chunky and has the cucumber and all of that which isn't typical from my experience for the chaat papri but I appreciate the effort. Just now as I was typing this review he asked me if I was happy and I said it's fine. He then proceeded to tell me "the chef said he put the yogurt on it and I believe him" *stale face*. There's also pomegranate on the chaat papri which isn't listed as an ingredient if you have an aversion to it. The samosas while flavorful do not come with a sauce. Think it could benefit from the tamarind sauce that's . It's now going on an hour and missing our entrees. I do not feel I need to return even after reading rave reviews. Would love to order a glass of Prosecco but don't think they need any more of my money. Post dining experience Update: **When our entrees came my friend enjoyed his shrimp and crab curry. My butter chicken was okay but needed more flavor but the spice level was good. My friends chicken tikka masala looked the exact same as mine but he wished his had more spice. Our waiter barely acknowledged our table throughout service however was extra helpful to those around us.... They did take of the chaat papri from the bill which was nice but even through the smiles the tone from management were still a bit condescending. read more

Have been here twice - once with family and once with friends as a group of 4. Both times, the experience was pretty good! Not too many complaints. Service is attentive and quick. The menu is expansive and I especially like the "build your own" style option where you can choose a protein and a curry style (ex. tofu korma, paneer makhani). Portions are pretty good! We've tried the chili paneer and gobi manchurian, and both were crispy and spicy as they should be. Main course curries are enough to share for 2-3 people accompanied by naan or rice. Great dining experience overall! But a little pricey for the amount of food we got. I have always driven past but got a chance to try with a friend who highly recommended this place. I got to try one of my typical go-tos, the palak paneer. Loved how the spinach and cream flavors were both prominent, in addition to interesting hints of ginger and maybe artichoke? Would have loved for it to be a little more salty but otherwise taste was great! The paneer cubes were pretty solid in terms of the "cheese" taste and texture! However for a $17 dish I only got five cubes :( (and thought I'd get more palak), whereas other dishes seem to have more meat? Shout out of the naan that was served fresh and warm!! It was fluffy and chewy - even throughout the meal! Also got to try a snippet of my friends chicken masala which had pretty solid flavors! Note that you can customize each dish with different spice levels. Honestly couldn't taste the "mild" so would recommend medium or more if you actually want a kick. I haven't been to many Indian restaurants in RVA but so far Tulsi I my favorite. I've been twice and got the same dish both times so I need to branch out. But the chicken korma is delicious. Saucy curry goodness. The naan is buttery and good but as you can see it's a little different than the typical "wood fired" looking naan you see most places. We also got the veggie samosa which is a good little starter for 2. Staff is friendly and attentive but quiet. Vibe is a little better than your typical Indian restaurant but not "elevated". Anytime I walk down Cary street and look in the windows of Tulsi, all of the tables are occupied. I finally went to try it and was honestly unimpressed. The inside of the restaurant is decorated very traditionally and smells amazing. We ordered an appetizer (which took almost 45 minutes to arrive) and it was good but dry-definitely needed a sauce to accompany it. My chicken masala was very tender and well flavored, however, I was surprised at the small portion size given the price I paid for the entree. I was really hoping for a generous portion that would allow for leftovers. In the future I may consider ordering takeout as it appears they do a lot of takeout business. read more

Great service! Everyone was super polite and paid just the right amount of attention to us. Try the Konkani with salmon. The menu says it goes great with seafood, which is definitely true. Love the rice with the cardamom pods. So, so good. So much flavor! We got medium-hot, which was plenty spicy! It wasn't too spicy though. Paneer naan is where it's at also. The best Indian food I've had since I've moved to Richmond, Tulsi gets it right, right on time. The service as soon as you walk in the door let's you know that this business views their customers as a high priority. Priority number one here is clearly the food, because you cannot go wrong. Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan Basket,Tandoori Chicken, their all great, you could choose from this menu with your eyes closed and you will still be satisfied. We plotted on this place a few days before we ordered. Although they have inside seating available, we decided to order for take out. I ordered the seafood palaak (without mussels) and he ordered the lamb curry. My heat level was medium to hot. That was just right for me. There were large chinks of fish and two large shrimp. I could detect some crab meat, but not a lot. The palaak was delicious. I wanted palaak paneer, but that is a completely separate dish. I didn't want that much food. Since I do not eat white rice, I didn't get any with my order. He said that the lamb curry was delicious. His heat level was medium. He said that was a good level for him. I ordered chicken nuggets for my child and they resemble the breading of McDonald's chicken nuggets. Yet, it was good and real chicken. The only downside was we were not given any utensils to eat. I had to wait to get home instead of enjoying out in the park like we had planned. Also, we got a sample of their curry chicken. That was good as well. We both enjoyed the curry chicken.
