Came to Tumbao on Calle Ocho to celebrate my birthday, and this was my second time visiting. The place has been beautifully renovated, and the new owners have done a wonderful job transforming it into a truly special destination. The bar and beer selection are excellent, and the combination of great fusion cuisine with live music creates an amazing atmosphere. The décor is stylish and inviting, making it perfect for a fun night out with friends or even a romantic evening. Everything from the ambiance to the food and entertainment was on point. With the name taken from a Celia Cruz song, Tumbao has the beat & the vibe for a great meal. I actually saw this during the Calle Ocho festival. That day, because of the crowds, they only had a fixed menu of premade sandwiches and a couple of drinks. Fast forward to last Thursday, when a friend of mine and I decided to stop by for a dinner and stroll in Little Havana. The restaurant space is pretty cozy: tables on opposite walls with the corridor (and dance floor) in the middle. That's right, they have live music, mostly salsa and merengue, and we were able to dance a bit. The restaurant also has tables outside. This time I had just the glass of house wine, while she had a Cuba Libre. The menu is geared towards tapas, where you can both share dishes. Her main was tostones "cups" topped with cheese and ropa vieja (shredded beef) while I had their Obrapia Chicken (basically q chicken pot pie). Both dishes were well seasoned and flavorful. My chicken dish had a light crust, similar to a croissant and the chicken filling (generously portioned btw) a good hint of citrus. We closed out with their crema catalana dessert, with a perfectly crispy crust and a filling that tasted like rice pudding. Our server was really pleasant and attentive, and told us they have live music Thursdays and Fridays. The musician was equally skilled, and even takes requests. We decided to try Tumbao Calle 8 after reading several great reviews and were excited to visit since it recently opened. Located right on 8th Street, the restaurant is small, inviting, and full of great energy. There was live music during our visit. A guitar player which added to the vibrant atmosphere. Tumbao offers an authentic, upscale Cuban dining experience with excellent vibes. Our server, Maria Fernanda, along with the rest of the staff, was extremely attentive and welcoming. They also offer a great happy hour seven days a week, which is a nice bonus. Seating is available both indoors and outdoors. My husband ordered a mojito, which he really enjoyed. We started with the chef's croquetas, which were the highlight of the meal. Round, fluffy croquetas filled with creamy Serrano ham. Absolutely delicious. I ordered the pork chop with peppercorn gravy, which came with a side. I chose the plantains (maduros), mainly because my husband loves them. The portion was very generous! Four pork chops served with crispy tiny new potatoes that were delicious. The peppercorn sauce was surprised another highlight and excellent. We definitely had leftovers to take home. My husband ordered the special with lechón (pork), moros, and fried yucca. The pork had great flavor but was unfortunately a bit dry. I would recommend the kitchen explore ways to keep their food more moist. The fried yucca; however, was wonderful and served with a creamy cilantro sauce. The moros also needed a bit more seasoning and moisture. Overall, Tumbao Calle 8 is an inviting restaurant with a lot of potential. As a brand-new spot, there are some areas to refine, particularly keeping certain dishes more moist, but the service, atmosphere, and overall experience were fun and welcoming. I would recommend giving Tumbao a try and look forward to seeing how they continue to improve. read more

I took my out-of-town friend here as the rating is pretty good, and it was such a disappointment, I felt embarrassed that she may think this is the best Miami can offer. We had the baby lamb riblets, and I'd say that this is the toughest lamb chop I had ever had in my life. Once we started cutting into it we knew it was overcooked, and after sawing through the meat we could see it was all well done and grey. The little pig feast was no better. It must be a five year old piglet to yield meat this dry and tough. The seafood casserole is a nice portion, the flavor was good, but again the chef overcooked the ingredients. Stopped here by accident. Was actually looking for La Taverna. It must have been an ownership change or a rebrand. We stopped here for lunch. Food is delicious, but a bit pricey. There's a nice mix of Cuban food with infusions of other island food influence. We got the empanada and curry chicken for the kids. Somehow, the food made them take a break from playing dominoes at the table. That should say something. Based on the heavy music equipment in the background and the giant TV, I'm assuming this place is turnt up later in the day! It gives off vibes of banging night spot. Whether that's true or not, that's not for me to ever find out lol. I'll just enjoy the decorations and the cultural influence of the tables and artistic design that make it a cool spot to swing by for lunch and take in the sights of Calle Ocho.... The lunch crowd is very clearly tourist industry.I suggest swinging by this place without your Patagonia sling and your travel pants. Try to look like you actually live somewhere nearby lol. Just kidding we know you are tourists. We know you're stopping by to try Cuban food. Just own it and make sure to remember put on some block when you're traveling and seeing sites lol. Spectacular experience. The service was warm and inviting, the food was exceptional, and the entertainment and ambiance was superb. The restaurant is small and cozy with a small area dedicated to live entertainment that night. They seated our party of 3 immediately and were very friendly. The menu had some unique and flavorful options as well as classic dishes. We ended up getting the octopus and oxtail appetizers, lamb ribblets, and empanadas. The octopus was seared beautifully in a delicious sauce. The oxtail was soft and shredded with a hearty flavor in mini tostada-like croquettes. The lamb was rich and meaty and the empanadas were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The two-person band was fantastic, they played all the salsa and bachata greatest hits. This restaurant was amazing! Customer care was great. We enjoyed mojitos, they were very refreshing! They offered us a sampling of their Pumpkin Cream soup, it was delicious.
