Trust me, get the mixed appetizer platter. My girlfriend and I have come to this spot a few times because it's right down the street from her apartment. We got the platter to go and I want to rave about it. Tabbouleh: SO fresh. Tons of parsley and amazing greens. Hummus: Super rich with a slight tang. Yum. Babaganoush: Holy crap I could eat a whole bowl of just this. Smoky and bitter and sweet all at the same time. Piyaz: Pretty tasty although not particularly special. Hearty for sure. Eggplant Salad: I love this wonderful red color. Chockful of onions and peppers and eggplant. Lebni: Incredibly good yogurt. Cooling and thick and addictive. If you let it sit on your tongue it will start to tingle. We got deceivingly large helpings of each. The platter was pretty heavy! Came here last night for dinner. The staff was very accommodating from the minute we walked in. It was a little chilly outside and with the AC still blasting it was quite cold inside and they were able to turn it down for us. Service came very quickly with water and the fresh bread and olive oil. Ordered falafel as an appetizer and it was very crispy on the outside without that greasy and fried feeling. For the entrees we ordered the kofte and shish kebab and a side order of the labmahcun. The kofte was very well seasoned and tasty. The shish kebab was grilled to medium well and was perfect as well. The lamb flavor was still there and the meat wasn't tough at all. The lahmahcun was good, but could have been better. The ones I've had before had more of a lamb flavor than a tomato flavor and I was expecting a bit of the same. Plus the way they stacked the cut up pieces on top of one another made the dough soggy. Came here for my friend's birthday for lunch and I have few remarks - Service was excellent. The lady worked fast and efficiently. They started with some fresh bread. We waited approximately 30 min for our food and when the food arrived, this is when I had some issues - 1) The lamb was not well cooked. I felt as if I was eating rubber. 4 small pieces smacked on the plate. 2) However, the adana kabab as well made and seasoned. The portioned were small and I had visited MANY Turkish restaurants in NY. The rice was the best part of the entree. My friend does not eat lamb and they kindly changed her meal (took a bit of time though). For USD 17-18 dollars a meal, I would prefer better quality food. I still kindly tipped and left, but I do not see myself returning only because the quality and portions of the food did not meet my expectations. Turkish Grill was the first stop on my tour of deliciousness on the 7 train. Stopped in for a couple simple appetizers, and left raving about them for an hour. Got there at about 11am on a Wednesday, and had no trouble getting a seat. Ordered the baba ghanoush and the hummus. Now, I've never been the hugest baba ghanoush fan. But I loved it here. Refreshing is a word that comes to mind. It had a different consistency than I'm used to- maybe a little more jelly-like, but in a good way. It really was great. But the hummus. Oh, the hummus. It was everything. It was the best hummus I have had outside of Israel, bar none. Great texture, great flavor... just awesome. And the fluffy, tasty, warm Turkish bread to top it all off. Yesterday I invited my parents in law for dinner at Turkish Grill. I was embarrassed! Apart from late service, the kabab was so oily (looked like fried!!), rise wasnt fresh and tasteless, french fries were soggy and so salty!! My in laws wanted to replace fries with rise, there was no rise left!! they got us borgul instead (it was 9:00 pm though). They asked for thin bred, the owner comes by and says that she will charge us a side dish!!! I was ok because my in laws had nothing to eat, we got it anyway half burnt!! RACIST! RACIST! RACIST! Me, a Caucasian looking person, and my wife, a non-Caucasian, have been here a total of three times. The female host would ignore my wife when she requested a table for us twice when I was running late and gave her an unwelcoming attitude when my wife would have to approach her (!) to be seated. Last night it was the opposite in which my wife was running late, etc. and the same female host greeted me with a smile and sat me. Last night was our third and last time that we will go there. When seated we noticed they had wifi and asked the waiter for the password after ordering our food. He gave us a lame excuse that he didn't know it and the manager won't tell him, in other words poor customer service. The bread last night was flat and stale. All regulars to this spot know that their bread with the olives and olive oil dip rocks but last night it seemed that it took it deep dive down. When my yorgutlu beyti came out, it was COLD! I sent it back knowing that I was doomed to have my food touched and spat on. The same waiter came back with my food semi-warm and didn't even attempt to apologize. Yes the food the first couple of times was great, in fact superb as noted in several previous reviews. I was happy that I could have walked from my apartment to a restaurant with great food. But we won't return due to an upset stomach afterward which may have been a combination of the cold food and rude vibes we got last night. Wow, what a gem of a restaurant! Both for vegetarians and non-vegetarians! Turkish Grill was recommended by fellow Yelper Judy K., and after reading her review, I had to make a pilgramage to the Sunnyside Turkish food mecca. My experience was limited to the "classic" vegetarian items, as I was dining with an all-veg crowd. I must say that I did not miss meat one bit. We had the large appetizer platter, served with an array of hummus, thick yogurt, shredded parsely, white beans, stewed vegetables and other Turkish mezze items, all served with fresh pita bread, topped off with deliciously toasted black and white sesame seeds. An amazingly healthy and fun way to eat. We supplemented our vegetable fest with Shepherd's salad with feta, fried eggplant and two servings of falafel. Every dish was standout! The salad had chunky vegetables, each with a crisp crunch, served with a gentle blend of lemon, red onion, and olive oil. Fried eggplant was in no way greasy, topped off with yogurt and garlic sauce. Falafel was also moist and flavorful, fried to absolute perfection. I gotta say, I am a big fan of this place. Definitely want to go back to try the grilled meats and whole-cooked fish. read more

You know you're in good hands when you ask your waitress for a recommendation, show her the appetizer you had in mind, and she suggests one much cheaper instead... but allow me to rewind for a second. While studying abroad in Istanbul last year, I found myself picking up late dinners of Lahamacuns or pides or kababs on the way home. Not always, but on many nights, these delicious lonely dinners were accompanied by skyping with the rents. They were constant witness to the variety of turkish cuisine I would chow down on while listening to the daily hustle n bustle of their lives. But I forever wanted to share tastes of aromatically grilled meats and charcoal fired breads I would sinfully devour, but even I know, that 14kgs of Turkish delight is the limit with skimpy american airlines carryon luggage. So, then today, on this uncomfortably moist rainy evening, we (rents and I) stumbled upon (no, not online) a glowing red & black sign for Turkish Grill on the drive back from the village to mi casa. We muni-metered under the 7-train bridge, and hopped on over to the romantic restaurant. And I can tell you, nothing sets the mood better than comfortable air-conditioning, perfectly chilled water, and warm puffy bread with flavorful olives and olive oil. To start, we ordered the Sigara Borek, a light phyllo dough roll type thing stuffed with a blend of feta cheese and fresh herbs. Its crisp, hot, and surprisingly not-oily shell harnessed the most melty, yummy, perfectly not-too cheesy insides. We also ordered a side of lahamacun, a traditional turkish street food, which is a ground lamb meat on pseudo paratha/pizza type bread, which beautifully exemplifies the possibilities of lamb and cumin (almost giving Xi'an famous foods a run for their money). Next was the Yogurtlu chicken, which was perfectly spiced, creamy, and successfully combined contrasting temperatures with cold yogurt atop hot tomatoey sauce upon charcoal grilled, succulent, tender chicken pieces. It was almost a reverse malai kabab meets butter chicken fiasco if you're familiar with mughlai indian food. Then, the highlight of the meal, Special Beyti Kebab. This was a ground lamb kabab rolled in a soft, tortilla-like, lavash bread, drizzled with Turkish Grills own "special sauce." These rolls were than placed atop buttered garlic rice and served with purple cabbage, lettuce, grilled tomatoes and peppers. aka, I've never been happier. And then just when I thought we were gonna call for the check, the mother ordered künefe. A dessert cheese coated with a honeyed crispy vermicelli layer of goodness, topped with crumbled pistachio. It was reminiscent of the best baklava I've had, except, on crack. Just google image this and find the best picture of fatisfaction. This is what i experienced. So if I haven't made it clear, come here. Slash, my experience here was perfect, and even better than I expected. But I would've probably been on top of the world if they had Sahlep. Located on 41st St., and Queens Blvd. in Sunnyside, Queens...we took the # 60 bus from the corner of Broadway straight to the place..We were there in 15 minutes. We were promptly seated in front so you can see the view of all the passer-bys...The staff dressed in all black all seemed alert...pleasant and atttentive. The place was small but tastefully decorated. We skipped the appetizers and went for the kill.....SICAK YEMEKLER/ ENTREES....all entrees were served with grilled peppers, grilled tomatoes,seasoned rice, shredded purple cabbage,lettice w/onions. I ordered Chicken Adana....Ground chicken flavored with red bell peppers seasoned with paprika and grilled on skewers...It was unbelievably DELICIOUS!!!and Camille had Chicken Tender chunks of chicken marinated with the chef's own blend of herbs and spices. Equally DELICIOUS.... After that meal we were really full but wanted to try the dessert. called Kanafe...a pastry made of shredded wheat threads with a spread of "Nabulsi" cheese served in very hot syrup w/ clotted cream topped with crushed pistachio & walnut!!! It was good ..very sweet and different. I assume the calories are staggering...but who cares...I just have to skip having desserts for a month!! I have a current crush on Turkish food. I have had Turkish food before. But most of the Turkish food I have had was closer to Greek with tons of meat, bread and not much else. They said they close at 11 PM. The kitchen closes at 10:30PM. There were only 2 other couples there a nice older couple and a nice younger couple. I do not think the restaurant staff was happy about us showing up one hour before closing. They must have thought they were going to close early. We showed up and they did not seem to happy to see us. One door was wide open the other was closed. We came in through the open door and they said it was the wrong door. If that is the case close it and open the "right " door. The hostess was helpful and pleasant. But the ENTIRE staff including maybe 5 people waiters, owner /momma/ hostess, cooks. They all stared at us while we ate even to the point where I had to ask why. It was extremely uncomfortable. As far as the food goes everything was delicious except maybe the fish. It was okay not great though. About the food- 1)they did not de-bone my fish like they did in Manhattan and since they were closing it made the meal longer since I am not a professional fish de-boner. It was filled with bones and somewhat fishy. It was difficult to eat with all of the bones in it. 2) appetizers were good. The pastry you see in the pictures was filled with Feta cheese. The pastry was nice and hot and light not heavy. The salad was good slightly soggy though but just too much oil not wilted, just too much stuff on it. 3) the lamb dishes were really great! no complaints at all 4) pretty decor , somewhat clean but as it was at the end of the night they were cleaning after what looked to be a hectic busy day but they try with the decor They were not rude by NY standards just odd as far as service goes and the crack about coming in through the "wrong door" when the other was closed and it was the only one that was open was strange and inappropriate. It is a nice place and if you live in Queens and want Turkish food there is no reason not to go but in my opinion Manhattan has better Turkish food. I felt the menu and taste were closer to the old Turkish restaurants I have been to which taste more Greek. I am sure Turkish food varies according to what part of Turkey it is just like Chinese food does. I prefer less Greek tasting and more Turkish tasting. Because if I want Greek food I will have Greek food. The fish was not great. I've eaten at this place several times in the last 3-4 years. I've gone there with parties of 15-20 people, as well as just me and 1 other person. Their service is great, waiters are respectful, detail oriented, and servicing. However, today I had one of the worst experiences ever with Turkish Grill. I made an order for a pick up (7 platters $131.00 - which were delicious by the way). When I called to make the order, I told them that I will need extra white sauce, they said that's fine it's not a problem. While I was there to pick up the food, I told the lady behind the counter that I will need extra white sauce with this order. She said that's fine it's not a problem. When I got home and opened up the bags with my food, there were only 2 small (not even 2 ounces each) containers. These containers were the size of the white paper containers you can pour ketchup in when your at Mc Donalds. I called Turkish Grill, informed them of the situation. The lady who picked up the phone (Sevvy or Selvy) informed me that I should have told her that I needed Jekkuk (or something like that), and not white sauce. I told her that I don't speak Turkish, and that I always call it white sauce, and that I'm sure there are a lot of customers who don't know the exact word for the white sauce in her language. She again said to me, "well then you won't get it, unless you order it like that". I then asked her if I can speak to her supervisor (his name is Ismael), she said "he's not here right now, but even if you speak to him watch him say the same thing." I'm disappointed. Not only did we not get the proper amount of white sauce which is needed for 7 platters, but we also were informed that if you don't know how to speak the Turkish language then you may not get everything you need at this restaurant. NEVER going back again. You guys just lost a very loyal customer, and all of my family members who were loyal customers as well. read more

The way they make the Kofta kabab has changed. Maybe they have new owners. The rice is now yellow and overcooked. They changed the onions and cabbage mix adding shredded carots. Cognitive Dissonance. It's easier to rationalize the quality of the experience, than recognize that convenience for the residents in Queens would be the main reason that the average rating for Turkish Grill is higher than that of better restaurants in Manhattan. I've been here a few times during weeknights. The dining room has generally been at 60% or more capacity utilization, with a diverse mix of couples, families of six, as well as the group of ladies that dine and gossip. I've always been the odd man out as the solitary diner, and have attracted constant scrutiny from the servers. The menu is on par with most restaurants in the city in terms of breadth. The different item I saw was the Findik Pide (small Pide in the shape of a boat, filled with either Kasar cheese or Suczuk sausage). It was served warm, but I couldn't say that I particularly liked it. Same goes for the complimentary bread: served warm with olive oil, but uncooked in parts and seemingly reheated as opposed to baked fresh (sometimes I wonder whether I'm particular, or just ungrateful - it's complimentary, for heaven's sake!). But, I hold my bread to a higher standard. I've not been a fan of the Lahmajun pizza as well, nor of the Special Beyti Kebab (wrapped with Lavash bread) that unbelievably did not have any yogurt (1st version I've seen that has not) - unless the addition of yogurt would push it into the category of yogurt Kebab!! I've let the server recommend the dessert to me, and on each occasion two different servers have recommended the milk pudding, Kazandabi. Sprinkled with cinnamon powder, I've found the texture much too gelatinous than versions I've liked. If I were them, I'd recommend the Kunafe instead. It's a competent restaurant in a neighborhood of eclectic eateries: ranging from Romanian, Lebanese, Mexican, Japanese, Asian Fusion, as well as Latin American bakeries. Decor looks like a mix of medieval to modern! Colors are very dull making the stay feel a bit sketchy! However, I had a wonderful male server (forgot name). He explained all the foods and promotions at the time. I had a chicken/rice styled platter and my wife had the salad/chicken combo! Both were very delicious, however the plates and utensils look very outdated or from a 99cents store. Maybe this is just me, but the interior and small things give a more yummy feel to the food! I'm in trouble... the breadbasket here is DELICIOUS. And I love a restaurant with a good breadbasket. You just know that even if the food sucks... you'll be able to stuff yourself silly with the free bread.. and hey! Free ain't so bad. It was my first visit here, although I grew up in this neighborhood... and I think this restaurant has been around for a while. However, like many restaurants around Sunnyside, even with the recent renovations, the decor is nothing special, but good enough as an alternative to "eating takeout on that ratty couch, again." The service was fantastic; and the food was very good. I had the iskender kebab, which had an amazing flavor from the tomato sauce on it, and balanced with a cooling glob of yogurt on the side (I mean glob in the most delicious sounding way!). The bread that the lamb meat was sitting on top of was unfortunately lost and mushed up in the juices, but its ok (read above note on breadbasket). Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. read more

TERRIBLE Service. So rude. I went there to pick up lunch for some of my coworkers. I waited patiently for 5 minutes while the guy behind the counter had an arguement over the phone with another customer. When the server got off the phone, he immediately took another call and instead of taking my money and asking the other customer to hold he made me wait more. Then he finally took my payment while on the phone. I had the audacity to ask for an extra piece of bread (we had 2 pieces with an order of 3 meals) and then he screamed at me and told me I was being rude while he was talking on the phone. Never going back. Recommend you don't go either 3/21 - UPDATE: In response to the comment from the restaurant manager below, my story is completely accurate. The service is terrible, the employee did in fact yell at me as I described. And I do not work for a competitor. I work for a nearby office in Sunnyside and used to pick up lunch at Turkish Grill weekly Never again. Most good business owners would attempt to make up for their mistakes but obviously not this one. I am updating my original review after communicating with the owner. We had a good exchange and I do believe my initial perception of the erroneous check item was incorrect. The owner was gracious and humble in his explanation. I respect that and I will give this place another try hoping for a more pleasant experience next time. Food is basic at best. Nothing outstanding or original being offered here. So why go here? Certainly not for the exceptional servers. Their presence can feel a bit intrusive and , when I was there last , one of the waiters chose to implement quite a stringent seating policy. Last time I went there , I was with my 70 year mother. It was 2pm on a Friday afternoon. As usual , the place was virtually empty. We had a choice of 10 empty tables to pick from: six of which were 4 seater tables, and three were 2 seater tables. We opted to sit at one of the 4 seater tables , specifically because the two seaters are very cramped. As we moved toward one of the empty larger tables, we were stopped by one of the waiters who told us we could not sit there because it was a table for 4 and we were 2 ( NOTE: there was already a Turkish couple sitting at a 4 seater already) . Knowing that this place is NEVER full or even busy , I explained why we'd preferred to sit at the larger table and asked if the waiter could make an exception. He refused. So I kiddingly said "I'll bet your tip the no one comes in and sits at any of these tables during our meal." And guess what.. no one did. Of course I did not stiff the waiter. I left him a normal tip. After communciating with the owner , I believe this situation was more likely an isolated incident than an ongoing policy. Oh those sunny days in Sunnyside. Every seat in this little jointt would seem to be a clear view of the busy Queens Blvd... but you actually forget where you are. At night, it's nice to sit against the wall on the right. They are friendly to large groups also. So to the food... It might seem overrated at every other place.. but try the Eggplant dip or Humus for appetizer. Kick of flavor! Everything has that oven baked/fresh taste. The fried calamari wasn't that bad either. The mesculin salad is good to share also. Timing is not bad at all.. plus the usual staff is polite and chatty. For entrees, I highly recommend the Spicy Lamb or Chicken Kebab. It's served with tomato, peppers and bulgar pilaf.. which is more than enough each time. You never get sick of all the different textures and taste either. TRUST ME, you might not want to try another place for a kebab craze... but this one really open your eyes. This is what Turkish food should taste like, I think. Plus the yogurt really does it for every dish. Impossible (in a good way) to get the spices out of your mouth and leave you craving for more. They also serve delicious $4.00 sandwiches for lunch. I wanted to try this place since I moved to Sunnyside - and finally I got the chance. We went on a Sunday afternoon, so it wasn't very crowded. To be quite honest, from the outside the restaurant gives you the impression that it would be a turkish restaurant catering to an american palette, but this is not the case. The food here is excellent, the waiters (i'm pretty sure) are all turkish - the place is very nice and spacious. Now for the food, fortunately we were a group of 4 so we were able to try a lot of different dishes. For the appetizers we ordered: - Mixed Appetizer, this came with Lebini (yogurt with spices mixed in - it was really good!), humus, eggplant salad, tabouleh (parsley, oil, spices), eggplant in sauce (eh..), and Piyaz (bean salad). - Fried Liver cubes (veal liver with spices) - I'm not a liver fan, but this was really good - it looked like it was seasoned with cumin, but it had a slightly different taste. I definitely recommend getting this for an appetizer. - Sigara Borek (the only thing i could compare it to would be a turkish version of cheese stick with feta cheese and spices - This was good, but since I'm lactose intolerant i only tried a bite - everyone else really liked it. For the main entrees: - Lahmacun - it was kinda like a meat pizza without the cheese. It had some flavoring on it, maybe cumin - which excentuated the taste.. Really good. - Kiymali Pide - It reminded me of a stromboli. - Mixed Grill - This was really good - a variety of meats. For desert we had baklava and turkish coffee. I love turkish coffee!! I returned to Turkish Grill after a five year hiatus and was pleasantly surprised and impressed with all aspects of their progress! The decor was a far cry from my original experience. The restaurant itself now sports a much more clean and upscale feel. Their ambiance is very modern. I love this place! Pleasant inside and the lunch special is 10--which includes and entree and appetizer (among the choices: best hummus you have ever tried, two eggplant dishes, tabouleh). My lamb kebab was outstandingly flavored but I'd order it medium not medium well as they suggest next time. There will definitely be a next time. Easy to get to on the 7 and the bread is to die for. I LOVE THIS PLACE ! I came in here with family and friends many times. This is definitely my favorite Turkish Restaurant ,and I've been to many of them. Food is Delicious and Fresh, restaurant is clean ,cozy and modern .Staff is very friendly ,respectful, and not pushy at all. I hate it when I go to a restaurant and they force you to order more things off the menu, it makes me uncomfortable and not wanna go back . I went there for the first time today for my Friend's birthday Party, what a GREAT place, the decor modern, The food is real tadicional , delicious Turkish food, the display of appetizers were amazing, I can't eat red meats I then I order Bronzini which I asked none fat or oils and it was prepared to perfection and the Turkish coffee was perfect, the service was excellent . Went with a friend who was dying to take me there, she goes all the time. This is authentic as it's gonna get. Excellent food, beautiful decor, great service. Why not the full five, they were missing items on the menu. Granted it was later in the evening, but still. The food, we had lahmacun (their version of pizza), mantu (pasta dish), cabbage with meat, and baklava of course. Portions were huge, flavorful, however the baklava was a bit of a disappointment. I came here obviously sauced from a previous party, so i was looking for grub. My friends and I ended up eating here and lo and behold, the bread was soo good i couldnt stop dipping in the small appetizer sampler we shared. the mixed grill was good too, and just as i always expect it, lambchops are excellent in a turkish restaurant. The food and service were terrific, but pricey. They offer several vegetarian appetizers/side dishes but shockingly no real vegetarian entrees. Sure you can get yourself a $12 salad but there are only about 2-3 salad options. And $12 is too much for a basic greek salad, even if it's delicious. The ingredients just do not measure up in value to the meat dishes. And I'm not going to make a dinner out of hummus and pita. I'm shocked that they don't offer a falafel sandwich, falafel salad, or at least 1 vegetarian entree. If you eat meat, you'll be happy as can be. But if you're veg, you might as well go to the food cart for a cheaper, more filling meal. read more

Food is semi decent, the service is HORRIBLE!!! I came here with a bunch of friends one day and the bald waiter and the beard one immediately started laughing and mocking us the moment we sat down. How rude! They made the whole experience there horrible. As for food: I had a Chicken Kabab, which was okay. It lacked flavors and could have been more cooked. My friend ordered the Chicken Sauté and it was not good. It tasted like marina sauce. Service was horrible like I previously stated. Would I recommend this place? No. And I would not come back here again. They need new staff here. read more
