First off if you want to go go NOW. The center is being redeveloped and this location is slated to close by Oct 31. With all buildings being demolished. This is a bar that serves food. We were there for breakfast. I had the steak and eggs. The eggs were poached as requested, the fresh fruit was a mix of watermelon and grapes. The steak was OK Medium Rare but definitely spent time in the deep freezer and required A1 ( i normally don't use steak sauce) my friend had the polish sausage and eggs his scrambled eggs were perfect sausage had good flavor but dry. The Salty Dog was strong . Fun eclectic nautical environment. Service was efficient but given upcoming closure a bit cold and distracted. Love that it's at the pier. Drinks are pretty standard. Full bar. Great views sitting inside and outside. Service is horrible. It's more of a bar. Don't bother ordering food. It takes forever and even the drinks take awhile. We went to cancel our food and she said it's coming. She wasn't too friendly the entire time. I feel bad but at the same time I tried to be friendly and nice so I feel uncomfortable when people aren't friendly. We gave her our card right when the food came to charge. We finished our food and still didn't get the card back. I finally found our server and waited awhile for her to finally charge the card. Turk's was a good time for me, my husband, and his best friend. Food on point, vibes well suited to Dana Point Wharf, and a waitress we liked. I tried the tuna sandwich, had potato salad as the side, ordered an Arnold Palmer, and a cup of water. For the sandwich, diced celery, tuna, mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce on buttered sourdough bread* with a slice of pickle did the trick for me. That's what I like. The food, and the ambience is just perfect for a dive bar that has such history. I think it's impossible to see all of the memorabilia that is displayed there . Ok, so they claim to be a dive bar so service expectations shouldn't be very high. We walked into the bar around 7pm. The place is very busy . There isn't any real clear signage about wait her to be served or "seat yourself". We wander around until we found the server working inside who was talking to the bar tender . We said "excuse me", she put up her hand to my husband's face as to say "talk to the hand". Ok... when she was done we asked about seating and she said "I don't know, you can't sit there " pointing to one empty table. "Maybe there " pointing to some barstools. "Or sit outside" . We chose outside . There was a different waitress out there who was much nicer . She got our drink order quickly , however it took her about 30 minutes to bring the dinner menus. After we ordered the food was served reasonably quick so no complaints there The Good: the portions are generous and the food was served hot. Stopped in for lunch after a near by whale watch trip. Casual waterfront place, waitress was friendly. Ordered the pastrami sandwich with fries and the soup of the day, French onion. Sandwich was nice with plenty of meat and the fries were good too. The soup on the other hand was basically a bowl of boiled onion in pale broth with dry croutons on top. This place is a hidden gem in the Dana Point Harbor. I love coming here after work when I can, the ambiance is truly awesome. It's a standard dive, complete with juke box. The regulars are super friendly and the bartender , Tristan, was awesome. Super friendly, fun and entertaining to talk to. I didn't catch the other bartenders name but he's always really nice and politely thanked me for the tip I gave him , not once but twice, which made me feel really appreciated. I get the notion that despite being extremely friendly and personable that they can also handle anyone who can't handle their liquor, so I felt safe coming here alone as a female. The absolute worst fish & chips I've ever had right on the water! AND their condiments were disgusting! I've never seen tartar sauce that had to be served in a bowl because it so runny. If you're looking for a high-end vibe on the water then this isn't the place for you. The charm at Turk's is similar to the feeling of sitting on an 1850s pirate ship as the walls and tables are coated in wood. Today our bartender was named Brandon and he was a cool guy. He told us a little about the history of the restaurant and had a great sense of humor. We ate lunch before coming, so we had a few drinks and some appetizers. We ordered the Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup and Clam Chowder. The pickles that came with the dish were so good. I ended out ordering more because of how good they tasted. It was quite misty/cold outside, so the Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup hit the spot. It wasn't the best Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup, but it did hit the spot. Clam Chowder is a dish that most restaurants and a lot of them don't taste too good. Turk's Clam Chowder was truly great. It was the perfect consistency and taste without being too rich. The blacken chicken was two nibbles of 1/4 inch thick leather. Fish and chips are as far as you should go used as a shared appetizer. But the lemon garnish was frightening. We first thought maybe it came from someone's leftover drink but it didn't come with a cigarette butt. Our conclusion was that it was pulled from the kitchen sink drain strainer. three things: we had to be seated in the bar because it was full at 9 PM at night, the noise level was so loud we couldn't have a conversation at our table and hear each other. Also, they left the back door open and it was freezing that night... The food was dripping in oil and runny on the plate and cold. The waitress was not attentive and came to our table only once to deliver the food and then place the bill on our table. This will be the third time we've eaten here and will be the last, unfortunately. After several visits I have enough experiences to say this place is not good if you're accustomed to good service or any service at all. Some of the bartenders are mediocre and lazy. In fairness, not all of them. But definitely the one who says to customers he's not staying here long. He even seems bothered to serve you a beer. Skip the cocktails because they're bad. Separate person does food. Notice I didn't call her a server. Because many times she's nowhere to be seen. No clue if they're serving food at 12:30pm. Not a single server can be found for ten minutes. Needless to say I left. The whole place stinks of urinal cakes, the beer is tepid and the pour is less than a pint, the service is outrageously bad, and it doesn't matter what you order in terms of food, the waitress and/or bartender WILL GET YOUR ORDER WRONG. Then when you mention that something is missing, tastes bad/off, or is the straight up wrong item, they will scoff at you, and then make you wait foreverrrrrr to get your order corrected. The ambiance is claustrophobic, exceedingly dilapidated, and was due for a "face lift" about 40 years ago. Yeah, the facelift hasn't happened, and the service never got any better from when I first visited the place back in 2015.
