Had it not been for a failed attempt to hit up the semi-new Roof at Park South (http://www.yelp.com/biz/roof-at-park-south-new-york), it would've been unlikely that I would've given Turnmill a shot. Armed with a group of thirsty friends freshly turned off by the dbaggery of their rooftop neighbor, I am suprised the former Vig 27 (http://www.yelp.com/biz/vig-27-new-york) is looking pretty good. For starters, the place feels more upscale pub than lame-o lounge. Gone are the sofas and plush chairs, in their place are sturdy tables for booth action and plenty of intimate lighting (i.e. candles). There is one main long counter bar as well as one in the back for private groups. Ventilation isn't the best, but it helps when the ceiling fans are spinning and the windows are open. The drinks are priced to the neighborhood and they have a decent beer selection on tap. Our group enjoyed the minglefest within the space, along with the fun, diverse groups of people that came in after midnight. This is all subjective on any night of course, but it was a relaxing time for a Saturday night. My 1 star knock is for one of the two bartenders working the whole night. Though she was a little slow in finding folks needing a drink, the no-no was when I caught her mixing different tequilas when one bottle clearly ran out. Ugh. Came here for their grand opening. It was an open bar event, so I'm sort of biased. The bartenders are super sweet as well as ridiculously speedy. The drinks were so good. I think between me and my two friends, we got 6 midoris, 1 whiskey sour, 4 baileys, and 1 gin and tonic for the mere price of bartender tip! What made me write a review was really the taste in music here. It's so rare to find a bar that plays good music that makes you want to boogie down. I can see it being a great place to hang with friends. You can dance if you want, you can just lounge and drink, you can smoke on the terrace. A+! read more

Came in for a drink while walking around the neighborhood and I was pleasantly surprised with the number of craft beers on draft and the number of bourbons and whiskeys available. They even had flights. The atmosphere was a nice pub feel and there's plenty of seating available. It looks like a good cozy bar to watch a game or just have some drinks on a random evening. The bartender was excellent and let me have a taste of one of the beers to try before I committed. Its a small gesture but makes a big impression in my book. This is the perfect spot for all sports lovers and after work happy hour fans! The bar is good size with a fair amount of tables to sit and have a few beverages with a group. It definitely seems like a local favorite for the 9-5 business workers to come after work. The HH specials were great and included specials on wine, well drinks and draft beers. The specials went until 7 PM which was awesome. They have all their beers and whiskey listed out on a chalkboard making it easy to see what they have. We sat at a table and were worried we would have to go to the bar to keep getting our drinks since it was so crowded, to our surprise we were wrong. The servers were very attentive and checked on us frequently! I cannot speak for the food as we only ordered drinks but their menu had some appealing items on it. If you're looking for a place that shows a game or sporting event look no further! There are TVs lined along the walls with a large projector screen too. Actually was impressed by this bar. I realized when I got here that I always used to pass it on my way to Tavern on Third. The bartenders are quick, attentive, and friendly. The food is decent and drinks are standard prices for the city averaging around $8-12. The chicken fingers were good paired with the white dip as well as the fresh chips and guac/salsa (really good guacamole btw and totally recommend it). Having many tables for groups up to 6, stools at the bar, a wide selection of beers, and enough typical bar food-- this is a nice divey joint to relax with a couple of beers. Typical Manhattan prices with beers slightly under $10, and $10+ for food. Never been here when it's busy but through a recommendation from a loyal customer and friend, he has had many a great night here. Loved this find on a rainy Sunday night at 11pm. Stepped up to this place and the windows were all open, giving the place fresh air. Further, place was lit dimly with candles, making an intimate night to have drinks with someone special; most of the people there were couples. They had tvs on, but fantastic 80's music playing. Pretty loud spot but a good bar for the Flatiron area. There was a huge, ~30 person surprise birthday party in the front, so I was impressed they could accomodate a group like that. Their house beer is a really nice amber ale. I could drink lots of them. Turnmill is like a little hidden gem in Murray Hill. My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to watch Sunday football where we could walk to the bathroom without pushing through 109 drunk dudes but still had a fun crowd watching the game around us. Turnmill was perfect for that!! We got two seats at the bar, and honestly there were so many TV's that no matter where you sat, there would be a screen clearly in your view. There was a Sunday happy hour which was wonderful, and the bartenders were all happy and friendly which I always love. We ordered nachos which were pretty standard for a bar. A manager here, Eamonn, came up to me completely out of the blue while I was talking to my friends and asked me if I knew them. He then took it upon himself to move my beer from one place to another at the bar. When I asked him to explain himself, he said I had apparently talked to someone at the bar who worked there at some point in the night. I told him I didn't feel very welcome after his behavior and he slapped me on the back. When I told him I wanted to leave and he'd have to waive the credit card minimum for me, he cursed at me. I made it very clear that it wasn't acceptable for him to act the way he did towards me, and he said I was making too big a deal out of things. I do think it's a big deal to be able to go someplace and not be harassed. Eamonn should have no role in any managerial capacity, or even be allowed to set foot in a place where he feels he's entitled to harass people. My group of 10-15 were practically the only people left in the bar when this all happened. We left shortly thereafter due to Eamonn's rude and obnoxious behavior. read more

Picture lunch time on a Friday afternoon in an empty pub with a full food menu. Walked in with my 2 month old in his stroller and asked the bartender if we could grab a table in the front. He proceeded to say, "We don't serve children here." Obviously I laughed and said, "ok, so any table is cool?"... Although this place is very loud and crowded most days, I like to come in specifically for their soft pretzel. If you're looking for something to clear your sinuses out this is IT! Haha I kid you not the combo of horseradish and mustard that they have is awesome, I would suggest ordering a side of ranch to go with it to cool down your pallet. The pretzel hangs on a hook (not sure how else to describe it) to make sure it does not get soggy from laying flat on the plate which is a nice touch. The pretzels are always fresh and have a good bite on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. The rest of the food is average, nothing to write about but nothing bad either. I have had a chicken sandwich and a salad here before, but again nothing too special. Happy hours definitely get very packed here, but it's a great spot to watch multiple games at the same time. Whether it's football or basketball season, they always try to have as many games on as possible and are very accommodating if the game you are looking for is not on. The fact that she was more interested in spending time with the bartender than provide good service isn't why I was inclined to review (I've had that happen plenty of times). The reason I'm reviewing is because as she was serving our drinks she knocked one over and spilled it all over my shirt and pants. Not the end of the world (mistakes happen) although it sucked sitting through our meal in wet clothes. But she hardly apologized and when I asked if I was going to get even a complementary drink for her mistake she immediately said no because "only a little spilled on me". Really?! I beg to differ, I'm the one with half a beer on my clothes. A server spilling anything on a customer should be handled by going above and beyond to make things right - it's ridiculous to justify it and refuse to rectify anything. Simply put, a great bar. Went to watch the final four. It's a great bar to watch games with great bar food. They have plenty beer on tap, including craft beers. We ordered mozzarella sticks and wings. The mozzarella sticks had the perfect cheese oozing out with every bite and the wings were delicious with a nice coating of wing sauce. So, I normally don't write reviews, but it's very clear to me that the management at this establishment is very racist. Now, coming into this place, we had no idea there was a dress code. Which is fine. But, once our party made its way in, it was only the minority that was approached about her "tank top" when another person (who was white) was wearing one as well. Upon asking for clarification, we received none. It was at the discretion of the establishment. And when our party approached management about this issue, we were met with resistance, and at one point of the conversation, she walked away. We walked in for a drink after dinner at Eataly around 9pm. I walked in behind my cousin and her friend. We ran into an employee who recognized me, I said hello and we used the bathroom as my mom and cousin bought drinks. There were five of us, my mom and my aunt are both 65 years old and my cousin was with her girlfriend. After we bought a round of drinks at the bar and sat at a table a manager named Brian, who initially claimed to be the owner, approached the table with a receipt and said "I understand one of my employees has personal beef (yes he actually said personal beef - it was like having a fever dream!!) with you so I'm going to refund you and ask you to leave" - shortly after, he couldn't give us receipts to show a voided payment to refund us, but he did say verbatim that "we needed to trust him bc he was allowing us to keep our drinks" - mind you we paid for the drinks without any proof of being refunded!! We kindly walked out shortly after this awful interaction with Brian. We barely spoke to anyone and were asked to leave the bar because you have a disgruntled employee? Please feel free to watch your security footage of these interactions - it's disgusting behavior and was insanely embarrassing!! This place is fantastic. I hosted a surprise 30th birthday party here for my fiancé and from start to finish, I was thoroughly impressed with the bar and the management. I was able to reserve a space in the back of the bar for free after I had contacted Turnmill and spoke with Peggy. The space in the back is semi-private (has it's own bar and bathroom, too!), so it was perfect to throw a surprise party back there since you can't really see that far back when you enter the bar off the street. The folks at Turnmill were so accommodating and easy to work with. They allowed me to drop off decorations and cupcakes prior to the party without any issues and since I was going to be arriving later with my fiancé, they helped my friends gather in the back while we were on our way. They even dimmed the lights before everyone yelled surprise! I ordered some party platter hor d'oeuvres a week before the party, and they all came out in a timely manner, which was great. As far as the rest of the bar goes, it's huge, nicely decorated and unpretentious. The bartenders there are friendly and they really do go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. They have big TVs for sports, etc and I did notice that there is a DJ on Saturday nights, which if I do recall, was playing some great mixes. I would highly suggest using Turnmill to throw a party or just to go for drinks and some comfort food. I'll definitely be coming back here often! read more

We hosted a large 30th birthday party at the Turnmill on a Saturday night and it could not have been ANY better. From coordinating with Peggy ahead of time to the helpful staff the night of, we were blown away by the service we received. More than that, this is one of the only venues in the area that prioritizes the customer - they don't try to charge a ridiculous buy-out price to reserve the back room. They constantly reminded me that the focus was on "our party having a good time!" After having the birthday guests (there were 4 of them) blow out their candles, the staff took the cakes back downstairs to cut and plate them for us. It was incredible. Turnmill is a block away from my NY office, and i often find myself alone, ponied up at the bar, eating and drinking at the end of an excruciatingly long day. And Turnmill makes me comfortable with that, with a solid tap list, great bar food (wings and soft bake pretzels are killer, above average burger as well) in a comfortable environment that is never too crowded, but not dead either.
