After many years of enjoying one of the best deli's on island, Turtles Deli is temporarily closing its doors for change of management. Located on the shores of Frederiksted, on the west side of the island, this family-owned business has served the community some of the best sandwiches on island. With previous owners retiring, the deli was purchased by new management, who will be offering much of the same menu that we've come to love, but with some new additions. Their initial focus will be to provide the same recipes and flavors and add a personal touch. Turtle Deli came highly recommended from the owner o the house we're renting here in St. Croix. We stopped in here after a late morning tour of the Cruzan Rum distillery and got out sandwiches to go. This place has a very cool vibe and if it wasn't on a beach in Paradise I'd even say it had a Jersey deli vibe. A word of warning...the place is small on the inside where you order and it gets hot and crowded at lunchtime. With only 3 people there to make sandwiches and take orders the process is slow...but worth the wait. Overall it has a great ambiance as it is located right next to the beach. 8-10 tables to eat outside in the covered picnic area seems to be the right number as long as people don't linger. As we were HOT and I was fighting of the results of the rum tasting at the Cruzan distillery we got our sandwiches to go. These sandwiches are BIG and we were warned they were shareable...and they were. Wifey and daughter just got a turkey, American and lettuce on sourdough and my son and I split the Smokin' Chix - smoked turkey, bacon, smoked Gouda, cole slaw and Russian dressing on sourdough. Both sandwiches were delicious and were just the right size for sharing. Throw in a handful of chips and a beverage and you're ready to jump into whatever you want to do next. I'd probably give these guys five stars (let's say 4.5) if the sandwiches were a little cheaper and they weren't so SLOW because they were packed...$22 was definitely 'Island pricing', but they were Delish! read more

Swung by today to grab a few sandwiches for lunch. I'd been on the island 2 years ago, and I heard they'd gone through a change in ownership. Obviously, standards have taken a steep nosedive. I ordered the tropical, a ham sandwich on wheat with sliced pineapple, and a spicy chicken on sourdough, and the veggie on french. I was prepared for the long wait for my order as I know how things go on the island. But I had much higher expectations for the sandwiches, especially since it 3 sandwiches cost me $40. There's no way the bread was made today. I doubt it was made yesterday. It would have been better served as croutons. The wheat was flaking apart at the edges and the sourdough crumbled apart before the first bite. Some of the tomatoes had obviously been wilting in a bin for a day or two, and had to be pulled out before the sandwich could be eaten. Half the lettuce was brown. Subway has better quality, and you pay half the price and get you meal 3x as fast. I hope the new owners can get their ducks in a row and salvage the mess that has come from this institution of Fredericksted. They raised prices and dropped quality, so I can't imagine they'll be keeping regular customers for long with what they're delivering. I know the previous owners heads would spin if they had the sandwiches we had today. read more

The first time we were in St Croix five years ago this place was a hit, and I'm happy to report that nothing has changed! We recently came here for lunch during our stay on STX and the sandwiches were just as amazing as I remember! Probably the best sandwiches on island, I wish this place was on STT!! I got their Turkey Ruben sandwich, and OMG SOOOO GOOD!! The bread is amazing, I think its marbled wheat bread, and I think its home made. Their meats are great quality, and the coleslaw has great flavor. There is also a special sauce on the sandwich that makes it absolutely perfect! The sandwiches are also huge too, you can easily eat just a half and save the other half for later...or if you are super hungry like I was just eat the whole thing! Turtles also has a great location, right on the water in Frederiksted with outdoor seating on the beach under the sea grape plants. You can sit, eat your sandwich, and watch the water for however long you like, its perfect. There's chickens around so you also have entertainment as they go about their business. Also they have a cool mural of a leatherback sea turtle as well on one wall, its an eye-catcher for sure. One thing to remember though they are cash only so be sure to have a few bucks to pay for lunch, don't want to miss out on this awesome place! Next time we come back to STX I will make it a point that we HAVE to come back here because their sandwiches are JUST THAT GOOD!!! read more

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. We ate here 3 times on vacation in one week. We went back before we went to the airport to leave! They will make anything you want but their offerings on the board are more than enough. I had the italian hero twice (so huge I was able to eat it for lunch that day and the next!) and I also had the Turtle Sub. My husband made his own up all three times. They bake their own bread, cook their own turkey and get meats from other local places on the island. Portions are HUGE which definitely makes up for the price. I would much rather pay $10 for a sub/sandwich here than a $5 footlong from subway any day of the week. The views are also outstanding from your SHADED table and their beach is very nice. I swam in it and someone else was snorkeling in it. This is a MUST eat at while visiting St. Croix! read more

Went here for lunch with my family and it was delicious. Some of the sandwiches were very huge portions. When you order, you take what you want and pay on the honor system. The bread was fresh and toasted. After the kids finished eating, they gave them a cookie and brownie (which were both very delicious). Highly recommend it! read more

Saw an ad for this place in one of the hotel pamphlets or whatever, so we thought we'd give them a try. The place is lacking infrastructure, but the food was decent, considering you're in St Croix. I'd give them five stars, except... 1) They had no private parking lot, so you have to decipher the street signs and then find an open spot. 2) They have no A/C. 3) It's CASH ONLY and they have NO ATM ON SITE. On a positive note, the staff was friendly. I think the guy who took our order was the owner or something, and he really seemed to care about making sure we had a pleasant meal and experience. read more

The biggest, freshest, quickest sandwiches on St. Croix! Not to mention a great view of the sea through the Seagrape trees if you eat on their patio. They offer a huge sandwich for a great price (around $10). We usually get a turkey or reuben sandwich to go, and take it to the beach. It's big enough to split with a friend. They also offer a great cup of coffee- we like to get their fresh baked almond pastry for a sweet treat. They have a decent sized paperback collection for purchase or exchange. I really like the turtle themed mural on the ceiling in their courtyard(and all over the place, really). Friendly folks, and HUGE fresh sandwiches make this the best place to go for lunch out west. We stopped here for a mid afternoon snack. I ended up getting the turkey club and it was very tasty. My daughter got a salad that looked delicious - she said it was. We ordered our food and ate on the outside patio that overlooked the ocean. There were colorful chickens clucking around, and a bit of a nasty smell near the first chair I sat in, so I moved. We looked for this place based on Yelp reviews. It is wonderful and worth the search! It is just a little beach shack, with the roaming cats and chickens right on the water. Based on information gleaned here, we split one of the sandwiches between two people and were very glad we did. The Reuben (we go the one with both pastrami and corned beef...a club maybe?) was the best Reuben we had ever had! We are from the northeast, where pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are an art form...so this is a serious compliment. The bread was homemade and great, the meats very lean and juicy, and the whole sandwich held together until the last bite. Sometimes juicy sandwiches turn into a sloppy mess by the end. If you are in the neighborhood, go there for lunch, if you are on the island, go be in the neighborhood. We came out from the east end, and it was worth it! read more

All of their offerings come on freshly made bread, and they have some unique and awesome combinations to try. I need this sandwich in my life and my wife had the highest level of "food envy" possible, and her sandwich was awesome too! She had a roast beef sandwich loaded with peppers and roasted onions, served on crusty bread. This place definitely gets a little touristy, as it's situated very near the pier. The good news is that St. Croix averages one ship per week, so depending on the day it could either be super busy, or not that bad. Finally, all of the seating is outdoors, and they have a few tables just feet from the shore! Great selection of ice cold beer as well. You must have at least one lunch here during your stay. My wife wanted the chicken sandwich I described above for our last dinner on the island...and she is a pretty major "foodie" if that tells you something. read more

They have built a reputation, but are not doing much to maintain it. The people taking orders don't do anything to make you feel welcome. Even with an empty shop, they act rushed. The sandwiches are big and filling, but don't expect to have lunch and dinner out of it. When taking orders they don't offer bread options or any options, for that matter. The mushroom melt has no seasoning. It's not bad, but tomato, porta bella mushrooms, haverty and maybe mayo on white bread without any additional flavors. The pastrami and Ruben are very average, nothing memorable. The terrace with ocean views is the best part. read more
