I am not vegan, however a friend we were taking to dinner for her birthday is, so we chose Twelvemonth. I wasn't thrilled (I'm a steak and potatoes kinda gal), but what a surprise! Every single appetizer, main dish and dessert we ordered was AMAZING! For the record, I tend to avoid beets, but I tried the roasted beets starter (as well as the bean stew and the snap peas) - and I am now a big fan of beets. We all tried each other's beautifully presented dishes - the Farmers Pie (made with lentils, peas, mashed potatoes), the Carrot Curry and the Campanela. The desserts were a blueberry cobbler, chocolate pudding, a tahini cake and fried apple pies. The restaurant is beautiful too! The food was "too this, too that." I think in order to make the plant-based food tasty, our dishes were too salty, too sweet, too mushy, too smoky, too (spicy) hot. We ordered all the dishes recommended by the waiter: bean stew (omg, too salty! Had to dilute the leftover with lots of water the next day!), scialatielli pasta (way too sweet for a savory dish; sweetness wasn't just from the corn), croquettes (too mushy); the BBQ plate (too smoky and too mushy - not a very enjoyable dish; also hush puppies that came with it was too dry); radish cake (terrible rendition of dimsum radish cake). Although everyone was friendly, it was confusing who our waiter was. At least 7-8 different staff members came to our table. A couple of items that I ordered never made it to the table. When I asked, the waiter said I never ordered them (probably a good idea to repeat the dishes ordered before leaving the table). I ordered another cocktail, which never came but was added to my bill. "I'm like... weirdly excited for tonight?" ^ excerpt from the group chat. We were hosting a goodbye dinner for our vegetarian friends who were moving away, and it really forced our hand to try a vegan restaurant (for the first time...) in their honor! After all, our friends had assured us that Twelvemonth is, in fact, "the best of the best." Bold words, I know. SERVICE: Even before stepping foot in the restaurant, the service was impeccable. I called multiple times on the phone leading up to our dinner (to book the reservation, to increase our party size, to ask for the updated menu so we could review beforehand, to confirm our reservation again due to my social anxiety...) and Bella was such a sweetheart each time. Our dinner coincided with Day 1 of their new seasonal menu, so Bob the owner actually came to the phone, walked me through the changes, and even emailed me a copy of the (unreleased! fresh off the press!) menu. Our server, Keith, was just the right amount of attentive, very personable, and gave PERFECT advice on how to portion dishes for our group of 14. I could not have been more appreciative! AMBIANCE: Even amidst the glamor and glitz of downtown Burlingame, the aesthetic of Twelvemonth was eye-catching, with the beautiful courtyard, refreshing greenery, and mid-century/modern design. Top-notch vibes for date night, girls' night, celebrations of any sort, you name it! If you just wanted some drinks and light snacks, the bar/lounge area was stunning and completely separate from the dining area. The lounge area had sofas and we easily fit 10 people while waiting for the rest of our party (though this was on a Wednesday). FOOD: The overall consensus was "wow, shockingly good," as admitted by even the most skeptical of meat-eaters. The starters were all AMAZING. The entrees were all gluten-free (not so much the starters, but the menu is clearly labeled) and Keith was very mindful of the other food allergies in our group. The dishes were fresh, photo-ready, and generally delightful. Latest visit: 4/7/23 Friday - I write this review with sadness because I really wanted to enjoy the food more but I've never felt so disappointed by it! I'm not sure if it was just an off day or time but I hope the Spring menu will be better. - We had a reservation at 8PM. I understand it was a late time but to only have 3 out of 7 large dishes available left? Sadness! - The inside is amazingly beautiful though! I loved the high ceilings, open kitchen, the trees, and bar and bathroom look. ----- [ menu ] ----- - Night shade cocktail ($16): Basically an espresso martini, it was not bad. - Parker house rolls ($8): Honestly the highlight of my meal lol. They came out warm and easy to pull apart and the crunchy salt butter was very good! - Mushroom chawanmushi ($9): I was so so so disappointed by this one. This one made me upset because I was looking forward to this the most! Chawanmushi is a steamed egg custard dish and when you spoon it out, it's stabilized and almost has that pudding like visual. What we ended up getting was almost a gravy like liquid. I assume it's because it didn't have eggs but it needed something else to stabilize it then. I wouldn't recommend this. - Celery root creme brulee ($9): This was a confusing dish as creme brulee is sweet but it ended up also being somewhat savory. I wouldn't get this. - Japanese curry ($26): The sweet potato croquettes were actually really good and a fun surprise as I wasn't expecting the purple kind! I felt like this dish needed more on the curry part of it though. The carrots were still relatively hard to eat and there wasn't enough curry sauce. Perhaps some more green garnish? Potatoes? More veggies? Japanese pickles would have been a nice addition to a very Japanese dish. - Paella ($24): I think I was confused about this dish being a paella, though the menu does have " " for it. The interior design is absolutely gorgeous. Art deco meets MCM. I would even go to say that this is the best designed/ styled restaurant I've seen in all Burlingame. But this review is not about the interior designer (5 stars). Here comes the review for the restaurant. I did not get the full menu because the apps and salad were boring. Didn't match the decor unfortunately. Salad (Tea Party) was just overly saturated with vinegar not sure what vinaigrette they were talking about, it was too bland. The crispy mushrooms were seasoned but missing acidity. The dumplings were a good dish. But dumpling with chili oil is really a safe dish. We decided to invest more of our time on other dishes because the initial 3 were not impressive. You celebrate veggies, put some twists into your dishes... I'm so sorry to be harsh but the dishes felt basic on presentation and flavor. Boring. Completely not matching the expectation based on decor. Speaking of boring... drink menu. Pros: you have more zero proof cocktails than most places I see on the menu. - I did not try any of them so I can't tell if they are good. Wine list: most of them are CA based. Very little European selection by the glass if I remember correctly. - not a good thing. Many people have an intolerance to local wines. Here are my pet peeves: For a higher end plant based restaurant and bar, I would expect that every cocktail would come with it own beautiful and unique garnish. Instead, EVERY cocktail besides the obvious classics, comes with a dried orange or blood orange slice. You don't even have a bush of mint on your counter. Not even rosemary. I saw nothing. I saw some lemons. Because you put lemon rind in your gin martini. Another pet peeve is your ice. Yes, ice. For a place of this caliber (and price of a cocktail l), I expect to have at least a decent clear ice served! What is this murky cube? The drinks were 2/5 iv tried 4 out of your menu because one drink was given to me by mistake. They were pretty boring. Just like the food. The bartender did make a good manhattan per our request. The design of this place is genius. Even if plant based dinner is not people's cup of tea, you have this separate gorgeous bar, with plenty of beautiful seating options, awesome outdoor seating! Twelvemonth feels like dining in an AI-powered simulation: visually stunning, algorithmically confused. Our first app took 20 minutes, our cocktail longer, and one app arrived as a closing dish. Food and drinks floated to wrong tables like misrouted packets. Our server was as lost as we were--no updates or any knowledge of how our service was going, or whether we even liked the food. It's beautiful, yes, but if timing matters to your meal, wait until their service gets an upgrade. They take orders on electronic terminals, so why orders kept going to wrong tables is anyone's guess. I've noticed the beautiful transformation of the former Steelhead Brewery while dining in the area. As soon as I've had the chance, I booked reservations here with a few friends. Twelvemonth has a beautiful vegan menu that provides a great option of dishes to satisfy fellow meat lovers. Since we were a group of 7, we ordered everything on the menu. Every dish was delicious and I can't wait to come back. They are featuring seasonal dishes so I can't wait to see how they incorporate seasonal items. My friends love cocktails and this is a place with great instaworthy drinks. I miss the old pool hall, but in its place there is a beautiful bar. I'm so happy to eat vegan food that tastes this good. The food is conducive to sharing so you can try a bunch of different dishes. There are appetizers, small plates and large plates (think entree size). We had the charred sugar snap peas which have a nice hint of smoky flavor. Also had the bean stew, which was surprisingly delicious. It was lightly spicy and served with toasted croutons made from crusty bread, and served in heated earthen bowls. For the large plates, we shared the Japanese curry with croquettes made of purple yams. I think these were likely the most memorable and best croquettes I've ever had. The paella was a pleasant surprise because the crusty and perfectly crispy cooked rice was placed on top of the dish, with a bed of roasted vegetables beneath. We usually don't eat much rice but we finished everything! Not kidding. For dessert, we shared the malasadas, fried but not greasy at all, lightly dusted with sugar, and served with a chocolate sauce and a strawberry jam sauce. I was so full but kept eating because it was all so delicious. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff very attentive. Note that the prices are a bit more expensive, however it is with the quality and care put into each dish here. It takes lots of talent and skill to make tasty vegan food and this place does it well. The staff were very good and well-trained. We sat in the restaurant, ordered cocktails, Pear Pressure and Night Shade. Both were good, but I favored the Pear Pressure, very refreshing and subtle balanced pear and cucumber flavors. We ordered the charred cabbage salad which was fresh, crispy and delicious. The new Strozzapreti pasta (eggplant) dish was delicious and our favorite, very good flavoring and aldente pasta.
