Recently stumbled across The Society as we were looking for somewhere to hang out late night that wasn't a bar. Ended up returning after having a pleasant experience with the hookah and atmosphere. What I noticed was all the staff was friendly, kind, attended and respectful - and Onur, who helped us both times, was particularly great and attentive. It was like the staff genuinely enjoyed working there and seeing the patrons all kicked back, relaxed and happy. My one suggestion would be to find a way to rework the indoor lounge area - seating was a bit uncomfortable with the back of the booth very straight. I also enjoyed the lighter jazz house music in the early evening, and the dimmer pink lights. Outside seating was very nice and reminded me of my younger days with family at the night spots in the Middle East. Haven't tried food yet, but at some point I may. read more

We came to Society as a group of 12 for dinner, drinks, and hookah. The food, drinks, and atmosphere were great, and we were having a good time until one of the staff members accidentally dropped a hookah head and hot charcoal. One of the burning charcoals landed on our friend, burning his Lululemon shirt. Thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured. The accident itself wasn't the issue--we understand accidents happen. The problem was how management handled it. The manager came over, looked at our friend, and said, "Your shirt looks fine. You seem fine," without ever asking if he had been burned or if he was okay. When our friend asked if he was going to check on him, the manager replied, "You're fine. Don't look for excuses." Later, he apologized to everyone at the table except the person who was actually burned. When we told him that was disrespectful, he accused our friend of "looking for money" and refused to apologize to him. Our bill was nearly $1,000, and after everything, they deducted only $80. Multiple staff members privately apologized to us and acknowledged that the situation had been handled poorly, while the manager continued blaming us. A simple, sincere apology and genuine concern for the customer would have been enough. Instead, the manager turned an unfortunate accident into one of the worst customer service experiences we've had. I didn't partake in the hookah but I would come back here if I was looking for hookah options, though it was on the pricier side than other lounges I've been to. How perfect that the food was equally great! The authentic flavors really stood out to me, you can tell that fresh ingredients were used! We tried the fried chicken slider, brussel sprouts, wild mushroom pizza, and manti (turkish dumplings). 10/10 for all of them! The waffle cut fries in particular that came with the sliders were so crispy. Brussel sprouts was amazing and also very crispy, drizzled with the right amount of parm. I was very intrigued by the turkish dumplings and it was delicious; the yogurt sauce paired so well with them. There was only a handful of customers at the time we ordered our food so it wasn't busy but the pizza and dumplings did take quite a bit of time to come out. I'm assuming this might be due to them being made-to-order to ensure freshness/flavor but we did get hungry waiting. My initial impressions were that this place was going to be overpriced and bougie and likely won't be worth it, but that it would be cute to try once and see if we'd like it enough to maybe come back, but the ambiance was stunning and the food, service, and hookah were absolutely perfect! One of the other waiters or hosts was really kind too, but I didn't get his name. We were there for maybe 2.5 hours and at no point did we feel pressured to hurry up our time being there, which was pleasant. My girls and I ordered brussel sprouts and a wild mushroom truffle pizza to share along with the "Dare to Be" hookah flavor. Each thing was beyond our expectations. The brussel sprouts were probably the best brussel sprouts I'd ever had in my life. The way it was marinated with the sweet and tangy balsamic vinegar and whatever else they added to it was perfect. Their wild mushroom truffle pizza? I can't even tell you how perfect that was either - just TRY IT! the truffle was dispersed so well all over the entire pizza without it being overpowering. They did not skimp on anything quality wise. The flavor of the hookah was well mixed too! Came here since it's one of the few late night eats in the Burlingame area, but have been back well before nighttime. The food is fresh, tasty, great portions. The mezze platter has a unique taste that I enjoyed compared with other similar platters. Clearly, everything is made fresh. We ate in the dining room just before midnight, but most of the action was in the hookah section! Service is friendly, a bit disjointed at times, as in forgetting things particularly one man who may be a manager or owner who looks puzzled a lot as he takes your order. I booked a table at The Society in Burlingame and specifically mentioned it was my husband's birthday. Not because I expected fireworks -- just maybe a nod, a candle, a warm smile. What did we get? Absolute silence. No acknowledgment whatsoever. A perfect start. Then came the food. Let's focus on the so-called shashlik. I come from a country where people actually know what shashlik is supposed to be: cooked over charcoal, hot, slightly charred, and served fresh off the grill. At The Society, I was served what looked like yesterday's leftovers -- pale, cold chunks of meat, clearly reheated in a microwave. Nine tiny pieces of meat (yes, I counted), skewered on two wooden sticks, separated by massive chunks of raw onion. Two ounces of meat, two ounces of onion, and zero ounces of dignity. Even a hungry dog would turn its nose up at this pathetic parody of shashlik. As a side, they served cold vegetables with more onion and some boiled rice. After forcing myself to finish what I could, half the plate remained -- filled with disgusting, half-raw white onion. I said nothing at the time -- didn't want to ruin my husband's birthday any further. But shame on your chef, and shame on this restaurant. If I could give negative stars, this restaurant would deserve every single one of them. read more
