I got my (non digital) perm at the end of January at this salon. I absolutely did not get the results I was promised. First off, the haircut was much shorter than discussed, as we agreed on 1-2 inches off rather than the 3-4 that Fiona took off. But the most upsetting part was the perm. I went to this specific salon as it specializes on Asian techniques and is run by Asian hairdressers. Before we began, I even explained to Fiona my hair's tendency to be very stubborn with hot tools, and that I didn't want any services if she thought that my hair would not work for the perm to get the result in my inspiration pictures (shown in photo 5 that I uploaded). She recommended the cold perm instead of digital, and strongly assured me that she could get these results. When I asked how long it would last, she said that since I am getting a traditional cold perm, it should last exactly like that for at least 6 months, and overall stay in my hair until it grows and I cut if off. My hair did not end up looking like my request AT ALL, and it lasted maybe at most 1.5 months. I attached the following photos: 1) my hair before the perm (very straight) 2) My hair immediately after the perm- already doesn't look like the photos I showed 3) 1 month after the perm 4) 3 months after the perm (now) 5) One of my inspiration photo- I even showed other photos of my own hair when I do have heatless curls in that I liked. The reason I wrote 1 star instead of 2 is because after months of trying new curl products, a fancy hair diffuser, and different drying methods were all not working and it was, in fact, the perm that was just bad, I called to see if I could get at least a partial refund, given that my services (cut+perm) added up to $300. They said no, they best they could do was to given me a PARTIAL discount on another bad perm. So, in total, they promised me they could do a service, failed to do so, and then refused to refund the money I paid them. I couldn't discourage going to this salon more. Plus, the vibes during the appointment were off anyway. read more

I got a trim and digital perm done by Tina and she did an AMAZING job! I really appreciate a hair stylist who is super technical with cuts, especially when I'm not really sure what I want / what's needed for the perm. I trusted her fully with the cut (my hair is thick, heavy, and I have a lot of it), and she clearly knew what she was doing. The digital perm turned out to be the best one I've ever gotten. Just got my annual wash & haircut with Fiona and it was awesome as always. Prices went up a little but what hasn't? $50+ for women's wash/cut depending on length. Free street parking is on the side streets (avenues) and I was able to get a same day appointment. Been going here for years and they're always so nice and don't go overboard with the cutting. Their website has a message saying they closed for COVID but that's not accurate. They're by appointment only now, so be sure to call (Fiona is 415-312-2548 if you don't get through their main line). COVID POLICIES: when I went, Tina was very COVID conscious - she wore a mask the whole time, sanitized the workstation and the hair cutting cape before I sat down, and made sure to stand away from me if she didn't need to be next to me (ie while the perm was setting). I've gotten digital perms here both before COVID and during (while it was allowed), and each time it turned out great. I've had issues with the other, more popular digital perm salons being too conservative with the perm, or not listening to what I want, but Tina always gives me exactly what I want without hesitation. Her prices are slightly cheaper than other salons too. She's super skilled at cutting my thick hair, which not many stylists know how to work with. The perm lasts indefinitely and never loses its curl. Bring pictures to show what you want, it helps a lot! read more

Twin Star Salon - Digital Perm, with size 22 and 24 curlers - Hair Stylists Near Me - San Francisco, California

Been seeing Fiona for digital perms since 2014. I usually perm my hair every 2 to 3 years. Prices have gone up. I paid $280 this time, not including tips. Worth it since the perm last about 6 months to a year, depending on how you maintain it. Be prepared to sit in a chair for about 3.5 to 4 hours. I made an appointment with Fiona 2 months prior to get a trim, so when I came in for the digital perm, we went straight to the wash. I selected the 27 and 25 sized rollers. Medium curls. Once Fiona starts putting in the rollers, your head will feel very heavy. She'll then add sponges to all the sections and hook you up to the heat machine. It gets really hot, so let her know and she'll add more sponges to alleviate the heat. You'll cook for about 30 to 45 minutes. Rubber bands will be snapping, it's normal due to the heat. Then she'll remove the rollers and add on some conditioner for a 30 minute cool down. Then back to the wash and finally drying and styling. Your hair will be really dry due to the heat, but it's your own job to maintain it after you leave. Chemical in your hair will be strong and stick with you till you wash your hair, but she'll tell you not to wash your hair for 2 days, so that the curls can maintain its shape. Love the finished look! Cash payment is preferred but she does accept credit card payments. *Digital perms are not recommended for those with brittle hair. read more

Updating my review because I came back for another haircut, and Tina delivered yet again! Almost exactly a year and several recommendations to friends/coworkers since my last review, I'm so glad to see that more people have discovered Tina and her impeccable hair styling skills. She is super meticulous, understands what looks good, and is seriously very friendly. You can't beat the price, either, which doesn't hurt -- especially in the Bay Area where everything is soooo stinkin' expensive/overpriced. Even if it means getting on Tina's schedule may become more difficult for me as she gets more customers, I still highly, highly recommend scheduling an appointment with her at Twin Star. :) read more

Warning: Do not book an appointment through StyleSeat- they do not actually use it there! I made that mistake by booking my digital perm through it. I was running late so I called and Fiona said I wasn't in their appointment book. When I got there I was a little frustrated because I drove all the way from Oakland to go here. (Full disclosure I came to this place years ago when they had different stylists there and was hoping to get the same stylist but she no longer works there). Fiona said I would have to wait for a bit and she saw I was frustrated and accommodated me within minutes after handing off her other appointment to the other stylist. At first I felt bad- I didn't mean to be a brat about it but I did sit through awful Sunday traffic and really thought I had made an appt. after I showed her my appointment confirmation email I think she felt bad for me. Even though I told I have been getting perms for years she told me I would be receiving a hot oil treatment first before the perm. I told her I've never had to do this before and she said it's better for the hair. She hadn't even touched or looked at my hair yet which is why I was confused that she automatically said I needed a hot oil treatment-- which is an extra $35. I told her I didn't want it and she accepted that so we went straight into the wash cut and perm. The pushy hot oil treatment is the only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars. Like most asian salons, if you don't speak their language, a picture of what you want is always helpful. I just showed her briefly what I wanted and she delivered. My hair is super thick so it took me about 3.5 hours. They have a small TV with a DVD player if you want to watch a movie or they have free wifi too. All in all a good place for digital perms. It's $175 for medium hair which is a pretty decent price. read more

I've been going to Fiona for over 3 years now. I first found her after I got a bad digital perm in Florida. When I came back to visit family I found her and she was able to fix it. Though of course most dying and perm in damages your hair but it had such a nice curl to it afterwards. Since then I have moved back and kept coming back for a digital perm every 6-8 months. One day I even ventured out to highlight and ombre my hair and she did such an amazing color job. I trusted her enough to try something new. As women we all know we have trust issues with people who touch our hair. At one point I decided to have a friend who was a stylist color my hair...bad decision. He had done a nice job but it was not what we discussed about doing to my hair. I ended going back to Fiona to have her fix my hair. Which of course she did. Why did I ever leave to try something that isn't broken in the first place. Now I live in Michigan and when I come back to visit family I still fit her into my schedule. Tina was fantastic. She squeezed me in last minute for a hair cut and coloring. I wanted a trim and a little more layer to my hair. First we did the coloring. I was aiming for a vibrant red and it came out exactly the color I wanted. I like how the coloring they use doesn't have a strong smell and it doesn't hurt my scalp like other salons do. Tina does an AMAZING job at washing my hair. She gives the best scalp massage ever. She also massage my temples and neck and it felt amazing. She really spend some times washing my hair and giving me a scalp massage. Seriously after a long day of work this feels amazing. She is very detailed when it comes to cutting hair. This is 2- month overdue, but here we go! This place is amazing. I was visiting SF 2 months ago and decided to look like a person again and get my hair done before a company event. I was looking for partial-highlights and a nice round haircut. Also, my partner went in for haircut too, simply because he was becoming a Viking lol. So we walked in on a random weekday early afternoon, and Fiona happened to be the only one working that day. Fiona is so kind! She helped me pick a very pretty wine-red, and she was very up-front about her suggestions on color-selection (what color stays well, what expectations to have, how that really goes with my natural hair color,etc). I have a lot of hair, so really commend her patience and her help on upgrading my coloring package lol. I received nothing but great professionalism and super fun chats with Fiona! :) Thank you for opening up your life stories to me. My boy partner's haircut was executed awesome too. It was a very clean and full ending albeit using the buzzer. Fiona's great customer service also includes offering yummy coconut cookies when my hair was taking way too long of the color to land (I always have this issue because its true darkness.. but I don't always get to have cookies for that issue lol). Also, it's obvious that Fiona as one of the salon's partners attends haircut shows to keep her skills current with the trend. I highly recommend Twin Star. More importantly, compared to the fancy locations in downtown, you'll get more bang for bucks in this area, where most of your cost goes to the good services rather than the rent lol. Fiona offers a great haircut and coloring services at affordable and great prices. I like how she really takes her time to make sure you're happy with your hair. However I cannot help but feel like she's trying to make more money off me. Initially she helped me dye my brows when I went in for coloring, and didn't tell me about the extra charge until afterwards, which I brushed off. The last time I came in she didn't tell me her haircuts raised to $30 until the end of the cut. I might be having misunderstandings with her, but I feel like prices should always discussed clearly with a client before starting. I got a perm from Fiona a year ago and finally got to writing the review. I have to say it was the best perm I've ever had, and I've gone to the original Star East, to Zippy, and many other places. The perm Fiona did was so gorgeous, I've had people compliment me everyday! No kidding, most people thought I had curled my hair with a curler and wouldn't believe I got a perm. Even people who have had digital perms didn't think it was a perm! It's been a year and the curls still last (my hair does tend to hold curls well). I will say that I think my hair could have been layered a bit more prior to the perm, but I am good at layering my hair so it was no biggie at all. Highly recommend!!! read more

Me being a guy, getting my hair cut and stylized was a great experience. Well, I was so impressed by her, that I took my mom to her for a digital perm.
