The best black sesame latte in Houston. I'm always looking for black sesame flavored drinks ever since I tried it in Seattle, so I was excited that TwoTone had it. The nuttiness of the sesame goes SOOO well with the espresso taste and it's a good creaminess too. I also like the texture of the bits of sesame seeds in the drink. The aesthetic of the cafe is modern with street-style flairs, it's a really cool space. I also love that there are Filipino flavors on the menu like ube and pandan. Most workers are super nice and say your name like they know you. They're also super attentive to ensure that everything with your order is perfect. Jonah was very welcoming and helpful, making sure we got a menu while in line! The weekdays seem to be better for wait-time, with little to no wait. The weekends however are packed and usually have lines. If you're not a line person, I would definitely come on a weekday. TwoTone is probably the best specialty coffee you can get in Houston, especially in terms of Asian flavors and creaminess. If it was closer to inner Houston, I would probably come here everyday. read more

My first visit was a 1star but I gave it a second try because a friend asked me to. I was told that this was an amazing new coffee shop and just happened to be on my route to work. It's off the feeder road of I-10 and in an inconspicuous place. It's a retail space and at first glance it looks empty and kind of shady granted, I was there around 7 AM. It may be busier and more lively later in the day or on weekends. In any case I pulled up and I saw their sign, but I was kind of concerned that it was closed because you couldn't see through the windows and again the parking lot just looked empty . I went to the door and went in. It's a very minimalist space and the decor of cold concrete floors matched the attitude and personalities of the people working that day. I was never graded, and there were a couple people sitting, waiting for coffees... There was no menu to be seen at first glance but I have a very simple order that I had in my mind because I like espresso and not sweet sugary drinks. I walked up to the register and there was a young girl who just looked at me like I was bothering her her by being in front of her. She never smiled, and she just waited for me to order. I told her good morning and she replied "Morning"...barely opened her mouth, not welcoming (or sincerity) and no smile. My order was simple.: three shots of espresso, 2 ounces of half-and-half and caramel drizzle mixed in the espresso. She looked at me weird and said ...so you want a latte? I said no not at all because I only want 2 ounces of half-and-half. I don't want all the milk of a latte. She didn't look down at the computer and kind of looked behind at a barista, and then looked back at the computer and said we do our shots in doubles .... Meaning she wouldn't give me only three shots I had to buy four. I thought that was interesting since other local shops indulge me without an issue, but I agreed to four shots. She asked me if that was it and I said yes..... I was very surprised but paid over $10 for my order of one drink! I paid because honestly, I was already ready to get out. I paid and I waited about 15 minutes for my coffee, even though there was only one person waiting for their coffee before me. I got my drink and left before tasting it. It was awful. The pull was not done well and the coffee tasted almost sour. Ugh. I was so disappointed. The very next day, my coworker said give it another try maybe it was just an off day . She also said she'd buy my coffee to make up for it so I couldn't turn that down This time I went a little bit later there was about three people in line before me. They had a lot more staff working probably about five people in total versus three the previous day. There was a different girl to front who took my order and was the total opposite of the lady the day before; bright eyed, kind and very welcoming. My coffee was still over $10 and this time it took me 35 minutes to get my coffee. I don't know if they had DoorDash orders or what, but I couldn't understand why there was a lot more workers and it took double the time to get my coffee. Once I got my coffee, it did taste better than my first visit, but still had a little bit of sour taste... Not as much as before though. Even if it ended up tasting better, I could not validate paying $10 for my coffee and waiting up to 35 minutes for it.. Especially when I can go to any of my other local coffee shops that I normally frequent for a less than $5 coffee (that only has three shots that I want) and the great service and flavor is always consistent. I never want to see any business fail. So I hope that the owners will discuss the importance of consistency in making their product, as well as being hospitable. I saw on instagram how ppl were saying they've waited an additional 30 mins after ordering. I was thinking they exaggerated but was told the same when I arrived by other guest. The line moved fairly well since it was after 12pm. I decided to try out two drinks since I live a good distance away and I wasn't sure I'd be back anytime soon. When I ordered the employee let me know it'd be 15-20 mins. I got a chocolate croissant it was underwhelming. Not moist, chocolate to croissant ratio seemed off. I came for the speculoos and selected the jet black as well based on the reviews. I was tempted to try the jade but one of the baristas who loves both let me know it's very sweet compare to the others I was interested in. Both drinks were good. I do think the sesame is a more complex flavor especially if you like to actually taste your coffee. It's just too basic and gave a quick grab and go coffee shop, and it didn't feel inviting to just sit and chill there. And it almost feels like you can't/shouldn't because of such limited seating. Two, they don't have decaf and they were really confused when I went a little off-script from the menu. I wanted double shot of espresso over ice with the purple stuff. My first time trying Two Tone Coffee and I'm honestly very torn with this review because the coffee itself was really good and clearly well made. You can tell they care about quality, and I absolutely understand why this place stays busy. That being said, the wait time was very long. The only real downside for me was the timing and ordering process. Spending close to $10 on one coffee plus waiting that long makes this feel more like an occasional treat rather than an everyday coffee run. Two-tone is very one-tone, or one-note! I was not impressed by this coffee shop at all. The hype was just that, "hype." Fell flat, one note and didn't really offer the same expectations or standards of what I look for in a coffee shop. So, yes. I am biased and I do have personal expectations of a coffee shop. I've been to enough to know that after getting to the front of the line and ordering my coffee, being told that a cup of coffee is another twenty minute wait, after having stood in line for half that time is already a red flag. My first visit, the line was out the door and then the wait for my coffee was an immediate walk out the door. I decided to give TwoTone one more chance. Went again the next weekend, and was still met with the same disappointment minus the 20 minute wait! The overall aesthetics, vibe, and ambiance doesn't really match my vibe. When you walk in, there are barely any places to sit. Two tops and a seating area on one wall is more of a "waiting area." There's always a line and a wait. They have all these staff members but somehow there's always a wait. The ambiance is cold, and uninviting. Very industrial and not cozy at all. On the other hand, it feels like a club for Gen Z'ers, with staff dressed with crop tops and no apron...idk just very informal and not really connecting with the patrons. Def does not give "community's vibes and screams casual. Now to the coffee: coffee is one note! They try to embellish the menu by adding all these Asian flavors, pandan, cafe su da, ube, and even an Einspanner, but there was nothing special about their ube latte. It def was not worth the hype, the wait, and the overall experience. Literally tasted loke ube cream with cheap coffee at a party. Def will not be returning here after all that I encountered. This place lived up to the hype! I've been watching the reviews through social media and was excited to be in the area for an errand today. There was parking around but I did have to drive around. I went on a Friday at noon and there was only a short line. Inside, most people were waiting for drinks and there were very much to go vibes. I don't think I would want to sit and chat inside due to how busy it was. However, it was very cool inside and the merch was cool as well! We came around 12:55 pm on a Tuesday afternoon and they were already out of a few items including the Speculoos, Golden Kernel, and one of the matcha options. I really like the modern, minimalistic vibe here. Merch on the left and seating on the right (both high tops and benched seating along the wall). Ube cream layering was very light and airy but did take quite a lot of effort to mix with the viet coffee which was VERY strong. Ube flavor was very subtle but overall was a good blend. I found the service to be very quick and efficient, churning through the long list of orders they have pretty well. I've had Twotone on my bucket list for so long, and I finally got to visit! The shop was vibey and quite busy, without much seating or room to chat on the Sat morning I stopped by. I got the Aoi matcha (banana milk and matcha) with vanilla cold foam, which was absolutely delicious! Good amount of banana flavor, and a rich matcha taste as well. Maybe not as creamy of a matcha as I prefer, but was still a great drink. My friend got the einspanner, which was also delicious with a deep roasted flavor! We also tried the pandan coffee, which was beautiful and very strong in its pandan flavors. I think next time, I'll go for a coffee instead of a matcha. Decided to get some coffee on a Saturday morning around 10AM and wow, this place was packed. There wasn't a long line to order, but a very long line to wait for your drink. I ordered the aoi matcha (with a vanilla cream top) and a black sesame espresso drink. I had kept my expectations low, but I was pleasantly surprised how great the drinks came out. I looooved the matcha! I usually don't prefer sweet drinks, but the banana milk and matcha combo was delightful! The black sesame flavor was subtle, and I wished it was stronger. I kept on coming back to the matcha, and I usually do not order matchas at coffee shops since I tend not to taste the flavor of matcha. But if you're going to order any drink here, I would go for the matcha drinks. I don't know if the vanilla cream top (for the matcha) was extra, but both drinks came out to be $17. You can tell the owners and employees are knowledgeable about their menu and craft each drink carefully and consistently, which is why I don't mind paying $9-10 for a drink here. Their menu offers mostly coffee-based drinks, but I've heard the matcha options they have are just as good. I will say all of the drinks I've had (similar to the ones pictured) are all on the more heavy side with a lot of creaminess and sweetness to them. Parking is pretty tough here since the strip they are located on is quite narrow and competes with the other businesses. The interior design of the place is also very unique to the area with a blend of street-style/contemporary modern vibes. Seating is not super plentiful and all of their tables sit 2 people at most. I've mostly seen people just stop here to-go or meet with a friend to chat, not a very WFH/study suitable place. They've got their system on lock. Ordered their einspanner and jade (pandan) signature drinks. Both amazing, but their jade drink was perfection. Very strong espresso undertone with the slight sharpness and bitterness that really shines through. The pandan creme uppertone is on the sweeter side but I'd say perfectly balances the espresso. Literally two tones. Mix together as much as you want to create your desired sweetness. Seating is a bit limited so probably plan on grab and go. Met up with my friend for coffee, and she suggested this place. Funny enough, I drive past it every day on my way to work and never noticed it, but now it's definitely going to be my new favorite stop before work! The coffee was amazing. It was busy when we went, which tells me it's a popular spot to just relax and vibe out. The atmosphere was perfect, not too noisy, easy to have a conversation, and the music was a great mix of chill tunes. When I walked in, I was greeted by Josh, who was so friendly and attentive. He even remembered my friend's name and used both of our names again at the end of the transaction when he thanked us. That kind of personal touch really stands out. The staff was great overall, customer service was definitely a 10/10. I'll for sure be back. Only downfall: a lady walked in with her dog. I really wish people would leave their pets at home or in the car, because they don't need to be inside a place where food is being served, it's completely unsanitary. The name is just so incredibly fitting without being nauseatingly 'cute.' I have a strong suspicion that this location formerly was Pura Coffee (RIP). The drinks are in fact, two-toned. The foam or whip on top is DELICIOUS. This place can be diet friendly but expect to cheat if you're coming for a drink. The 'Jade' was an iced latte with pandan and it was both aesthetically gorgeous, and tasty. The espresso used is not junky and low quality, which can sometimes be the case when adding more fluff to drinks. This is not the case here. The flavor was sweet, unique, and made me feel like I was on vacation. My friend is dairy-free and she was able to get either a refresher or the corn Iced Latte with coconut milk/creamer. She enjoyed it but said it was very sweet FYI. My other friend tried the matcha with Ube whip and wow, what a gorgeous drink. Twotone is our new favorite coffee shop and we visit every week. It's always popping, and for good reason. While the main draw is the creative and flavorful homemade creams/syrups they add to each signature drink (for good reason!), the quality of the beans they use (Blend-In Coffee Club) and skill in brewing precisely ensure that even the standard espresso and pourover come out fantastic. Whether you're a coffee snob or prefer a sweet creamy drink, you will enjoy your drink here. Just don't be alarmed that each signature drink costs about $8 - for the quality, it is worth it! The vibe is very sleek and stylish, and a bit of a street aesthetic from their clothing which they also sell. Store seems to always be pretty packed, but at least a little seating is usually available as most people pop in and out pretty quickly. Employees are helpful and cool. We've tried a lot of the menu and highly recommend the Jade, banana milk latte (with matcha or espresso), and that purple stuff. If you like something a little quirky and creative but good, try the sweet roasted corn latte. If you like pourovers, they do it incredibly well with great quality beans from Blendin coffee club. There is little seating, but most people seem to grab and go. I don't see this place as a study cafe.... more like a catching up with friends cafe lol I'm in love with their pandan foam. I enjoyed my aoi banana drink here on a busy weekend morning, a delightful combo of matcha and banana milk. Their other menu drinks were incredibly tempting, using unique flavors like cookie butter, banana, black sesame, pandan, and more. I look forward to returning and trying more of their fantastic flavors. The inside of the store had limited seating but was a clean, welcoming atmosphere with cute Valentine's day decor. Excellent crafted espresso coffee! They really know their stuff. Flavor was excellent, and the espresso really kick into high gear. Everything tasted fresh and premium quality matcha and coffee beans. Service was quick. There was a line out the door, but was served fairly quickly. It was middle of 3pm and constant customers coming in and out. read more
