There's always time for a sangria break, especially if you're sauntering along the busy boulevards of Barcelona. Jamie W and I were on our way to a preset appointment at Gaudi's masterwork Casa Batllo when we saw this restaurant had a prime outdoor location overlooking Plaça de Catalunya. They serve quite a selection of tapas, but we were just thirsty because the heat was getting oppressive. For 19,95€, we got a nice-size pitcher that quenched our parched state (Photo). It certainly did the trick, and we were ready for our Gaudi architectural history lesson. We are staying at an Airbnb around the corner and we passed by this place and decided to stop in for dinner last night, the place was packed, but we were able to sit at the bar. The food selection was excellent, the food itself was excellent, the service was fast and responsive, it's been a long time since I've been to Barcelona and I absolutely love Tapas and this place definitely fit the bill. Dinner our first night in Barcelona. Our guide recommended a nearby Tapas place that had good food and was close by and casual. Txapela was a good suggestion. The menu was in Catalan but it really helped that U could download an English version. We ordered several shareable appetizers and some individual Tapas. I took pictures of most but not all. Food was good. Portions were about what U woukd expect (Tapas sized). They had some beer, Sangria and sidra specials. (TIP: Try the Sidra/Cider BEFORE U order a bunch... it's very different from Cider in the U.S. - more like a Sour beer). Service was just OK. Food was delicious! Wait staff was horrendous. They all congregate and socialize while people stand at the door and wait to be seated. Once seated they take orders at random and bring food out whenever. We sat down and waited a while for drinks, whereas the people who were sat at the same time as us were eating by the time we got drinks. This happened a few times as we looked around. The servers are in no hurry to bus the tables and will have people wait forever to be seated. For such a busy place, you would expect them to have this figured out by now. Txapela is one of the few restaurants open on Sunday. This one also has a great location at the corner of Plaça de Catalunya. We stopped in for a quick snack, so tapas (or pintxos here) was in order. Arantxa: This was the best one with shrimp, bacon, and mushroom on a warm piece of toast. Urola: A few pieces of shrimp top some seafood salad that is stuffed in a roll. Calamars a l'andalusa: This is a plate of calamari with padron peppers and mayonnaise. Patates braves: This is a version of the popular potato dish, but the sauce here is not that flavorful. Croquettes: The croquettes are crispy with little bits of ham. read more

This is the place to go for delicious tapas and more. We chose to sit outside but it soon got cold and they had to work on the portable heater. Not a big deal. Part of our first order came quickly and was quite delicious. We ordered the roasted potatoes, crab on toast and the garlic shrimp. The shrimp didn't come and then we ordered it again and still it didn't come. The third time the waitress came by we told her we never got our order. Finally, it came and was yummy. Is this a tourist spot...yes. But if you're looking for a quick bite or a snack in the area, this place is great. This was our first stop after checking into our hotel. I actually like that they have a picture menu because I didn't feel like getting up to look at the pintxos bar. This place is Basque style and while it may not be the best spot, it certainly is better than any tapas spot we have in NYC. Service is brisk, but like I said, it's a great place for quick bites. Txapela Euskal Taberna is a small chain of restaurants offering Basque-style pintxos and tapas! Pintxos are little bites of bread with creative toppings held together by a toothpick, all sitting ready at the bar to pick up and eat. I tried the Txiki, made of white anchovies with tomatoes on puff pastry; and the Patxi Aizpuru, made of smoked salmon, cream cheese, and baby eels. But I was an even bigger fan of the tapas (small plates) here--we started with the salad of tomatoes, tuna, egg, and arugula; and a white bean hummus with acorn chips. For more substantial dishes, we had the Garlic Shrimp, a dish of plump, juicy shrimp in garlic oil; the Rice with Vegetables and Squid, cooked in a wide pan in a similar style to paella; and the iconic Grilled Beef Tenderloin, a juicy, fatty steak grilled to medium and sliced. My favorite dish was the fried egg with Andalusian calamari, wedge potatoes, and tartar sauce, as this dish combined the crispy calamari with earthy potatoes, a creamy fried egg, and an unctuous sauce. Pintxos! Tapas! Txapela is such a cool place- It's Basque style, so it's a little different from the other tapas joints around here. But the setting is simply the best in the country- overlooking the Plaza Catalunya under little umbrellas with all the people milling by and looking jealously at the tapas dishes being brought out! This place is open late, and serves sangria and beers! Score! We came in for some beverages, and some late night bites. I opted for a smattering of different pintxos. The menu was in Catalunian, and Google Translate didn't seem to work on some of the ingredients, so I just guessed- they have pictures on the menu, so it was just point at a few things and go with the flow. One of the mystery ingredients on my tapas ended up being eels served with salmon and caviar on toast. The tapas were delicious- all bite sized, but they came out promptly. It was sort of like being at a sushi restaurant where you just order a few things at a time, take those in, and see where the menu takes you. I stayed with the seafood tapas with more smoked fish and salmons. The staff was attentive and the food came out quickly. I was blown away at how the ran this place as such a laid back, yet responsive restaurant right on the plaza. My fav place on the Plaza! read more

A good experience but a bit of a tourist trap, admittedly. But I'm still glad my friend & I got to finally try the infamous pinxos of Spain. For those of you who might not know, pinxos are basically a smaller version of the tapas, they're little bite sizes meals that are typically skewered with a little toothpick. I ended up having a veal hamburger and a pulled pork sandwich. Both were good but a little pricier than I'd like to pay for what we got. Just keep that in mind for this kind of meal. read more

This was a decent place to have a few pintxos and a caña when in need of a bite and a drink. They have an extensive list of pintxos, but bare in mind you need to order them upfront, cannot just walk and pick as much a you want like in other basque cuisine places. We really liked this place. It's a chain restaurant in Barcelona but it's great for a quick bite. They serve montaditos, which are single sized tapas. We liked it because it's open all day long so if you want to eat when other restaurants are closed this place is always open. read more
