Moments is situated inside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The decor in the restaurant is simple yet sleek. The chefs table is right in front of a window looking into the kitchen so I was able to get a front row seat to view the action. I was pleased with the wait staff and the main waiter for the table might be the best waiter I've had at a restaurant. The food and drinks were delicious. The menu is fairly simple with cautious creative elements in some dishes. The flavor profiles were interesting as they mixed cuisines. For example, cod with green mole. The Spaniard and Mexican flavors worked well together making a delightful dish. The menu was able to play with flavors to be impactful but not too extraordinary which played a beautiful yet delicate balance. After our tasting menu was over, we were invited to the rooftop of the hotel to take in the views of the city while also enjoying a drink. An excellent end to an excellent dinner. I waited a week to write this review because I wanted to see how the Management responds after we reported being food poisoned after dining at this two Michelin stars restaurant on December 30, 2016. We both ordered "the trip" a 14 course tasting menu. This review is not about the food, although the food is okay overall, interesting presentation and service was satisfactory. However, I definitely would not go back again even if I had not been food poisoned. After our meal at Moments, we went to sleep. At about 4AM, my husband and I both woke up feeling nauseated. We started to vomit, we had diarrhea and suffered a fever. We were in and out of the restroom for at least 10 times. A night of hell began for us. How do we know it's the food at Moments that made us sick? Prior to our meal at Moments, my husband and I had different dishes for lunch and breakfast. The dinner at Moments was the only meal we had the exactly same food. Everything we vomited out was food from Moments, nothing from lunch nor breakfast. Also, keep in mind that our breakfast was at 7:30AM and lunch was around 1PM. By 9PM, everything has been digested and we felt fine. My breakfast was a cup of green tea and my lunch was bowl of boiled noodle. We wanted something light so we can fully enjoy our big dinner. On the other hand, the courses at Moments had a high risk of causing food poisoning as it contained raw fish, seemingly undercooked pork and other seafood. We were appalled and deeply disappointed by our experience at an establishment that's so highly regarded. Our last day (New Year's Eve) in Barcelona was spent in bed and restroom, we canceled all of our reservations and sightseeing plans. We went back to the restaurant and reported our experience with Food & Beverage Manager Hector Lugo. Hector knew we were flying back to LA and said he would follow up A week later, I followed up with the Manager. As expected, the restaurant would never admit guilt or liability unless a lot of people got sick. But this is what they offered as a gesture of goodwill, "we will be pleased to extend a dining experience consisting of two degustation menus at Moments Restaurant valid for 2017" REALLY?!!! This is truly an INSULTING and INSINCERE gesture. Who in the right mind would fly back to Barcelona to eat at the same restaurant that made us so miserably ill and relive such terrible experience in Barcelona??!!! Even if I do go back one day, I would never go back there. What a freaking joke! Finally, just because other customers did not report or didn't get sick, it doesn't prove our food wasn't contaminated. We are culinary explorers in Los Angeles and abroad and we have NEVER complained about food poisoning at any restaurant. In fact, a few days prior to visiting Barcelona, we dined at El Club Allard in Madrid, another Michelin restaurant. So our intention is not to extract something from the restaurant. We are fully aware these fancy meals are costly, we are perfectly fine with paying for them because we enjoy the culinary experience. However, in this particular situation I don't feel justified and I don't think it's acceptable. I am deeply disappointed by our experience and I urge you not to dine at this restaurant. read more

I had the fairy tale themed tasting menu. I like the idea and the dishes looked pretty and true to theme but the taste of most dishes is nothing special. What really hurt the experience for me was realizing the table next to ours got a better waiter that explained the fairy tale the dish is based on with much more detail. So your experience is really dependent on luck of who you get as waiter. Also, if you decide to come, get the short tasting menu instead of the long one. The extra dishes in the long one is not worth the extra 40 euro or time. Omg, the time! We got a reservation for 8:30 and the meal did not really start until almost 9 and didn't finish until after midnight. The last 5 dishes are all dessert (which is really unnecessary) and the pace was soooo slooooow. This is probably one of the worst tasting menus I've had. read more

When choosing to come here, I had to do a lot of homework. There are currently 23 restaurants with Michelin stars in Barcelona, ranging from 1 to 3 stars. In a city of 1.6 million, this number is plentiful. So after a month of detailed research, I felt confident when I requested a reservation at Moments for our Barcelona vacation. Moments is located inside the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel. It is run by Chef Carme Ruscalleda and her son Raul Balam. Within the culinary world, Chef Carme is one of the most renowned chefs, and is the only female chef in the world to currently hold 7 Michelin stars. Moments herself has 2 Michelin stars. You instantly capture this stunning, elegant looking restaurant the moment you step inside. With gold accented background, comfortable spaces between each tables, and a lovely stool for your handbag, give way to quite a pleasing first impression. We were greeted by our lovely waitress, Vera, upon seating. Although the menus were given, my husband and I had long ago decided to do the Tasting Menu accompanied with Wine Pairings. Currently the theme for the Tasting Menu is Ecosystems. It consists of 13 courses, the 3rd course having a 2-part. I won't go into any details of the menu, but you can see from the pictures below in the sequence they were presented to us, starting with Marsh. I can safely say that each course was a gastronomic delight to my palate. In an exquisite menu focusing on Ecosystems, Chef Balam has created a blending of the quality of living organisms to their physical environments. Not only was each course described to us using these components, but each was visually presented in such a creative way using the Ecosystem theme. The wine pairings consisted of 7 different regions from Spain and one from France. We were pleasantly surprised to see that one of the wines we had that evening was from a winery we were scheduled to visit the very next morning. They were described to us by a very knowledgeable sommelier with a great sense of humor. After our 5th wine pairings, she saw I had a glow on my face. With a straight face, she asked if I wasn't used to drinking wine. Well since we started the evening with a full glass of Cava each, after my 6th glass, I'd rather be glowing than be in a drunken stupor :-) No attention to detail has been spared in regards to their customer service.There was always a duo who took our plates away, and another set of duo presented us with the next course. Each was in perfect synchronicity with the other. The evening felt like we were characters straight out of Downton Abbey being served by butlers. The almost 4 hour experience ended with Chef Balam (and his interpreter) coming to our table for a little visit, and thanked us for coming. This was the place my wife and I chose for our 15 year anniversary. It was a dinner that we'll never forget. The theme at the time we went was fairy tales and we purchased the full menu so we got to experience everything they had to offer. Words and pictures just can't do this place justice. The food was stunning. Every course a completely new experience. My favorite by far was the Three Little Pigs dish. The restaurant is located inside what I think is a hotel? I'm not entirely sure because we walked straight to the restaurant. But the building is beautiful, that's for sure. The service was really great. Our server, unfortunately forgot her name but she was very friendly and had a French accent when she spoke English. The whole dinner felt like a fully choreographed routine from start to finish. I'm not gonna lie, at times I felt a little uncomfortable with the atmosphere and level of service because I'm a burger and fries guy. I'm not used to the fine dining scene at all. It was a super great experience overall and I'm glad my wife and I got to celebrate our anniversary in such a special way. If you're visiting Spain, this two Michelin Star experience is definitely a must-do so budget for travel accommodations to Moments and dinner fare. read more

I would come back here for certain things. FYI, we did not get the prix fixe menu because we had a hugely filling one the night prior. The great: obviously if you are paying these prices, you expect great service and it was wonderful in every way. The sommelier picked out a great wine for us that paired well with our food. The decor was slightly plain but very clean. The food was good but the "out of this world" dish was the Iberian pork cooked rare with tempura zucchini flowers on top. I enjoyed the hake with the garlic cream sauce but it wasn't "special" enough. The lobster appetizer was good but they put dots of sriracha on the plate and should have warned people since that has a burning type of heat. Another favorite was the spring onion tempura and the ham croquette which came as a little starter prior to the meal....both were delicious but the spring onion was stuffed with something and was unusual in taste and composition in a gastronomically good way. (i.e.-not something you can get just anywhere). The bad: the desserts were okay. The flower dessert was really lovely but the problem was that everything had already begun to melt prior to arrival. I advise them in the future to chill the plates so that doesn't happen. Also, I would say that The Mandarin Oriental which this establishment is located in needs to do a better job with its street staff. There was no one in front to help us find the restaurant so we asked a random staff member where it was when we arrived (and he was quite lovely). I don't understand how this restaurant only has 2 Michelin stars. It is 3 stars in my book and I would even rate it higher than the 3 star Lasarte which I visited 2 days ago. They have it all - Hospitality, decor, service, food quality and creativity, ambiance, tableware, attention to detail, efficiency and much more. They are a model for true fine dining! They really excel in the hospitality category. There is nothing they won't do to make your visit enjoyable. It is well worth going out of your way to visit here. The menu is another attraction. From the service to the décor to the flavor of the food...outstanding but pricy as you would expect for a restaurant of that caliber...think $25 Euros for a side of peas - I didn't stutter. They do their tasting menu as a tour of all of the Mandarin Oriental locations...super fun and innovative. We secured a reservation last minute. Initially told full when we called, then got a call later in the day for their cancellation list, which was great. 2 Michelin star restaurant, complimentary parking for those driving. $170 for Tasting menu, 13 courses but ends up 14 as one is a 2 part. FOOD at this price range, I expect perfection, so I will be very critical and say everything was perfect except: 1. The gazpacho had one of the 3 pieces that was a bitter cucumber. 2. The croquet that was part of the first course did not taste fresh, like that taste that it was sitting under a heating lamp for a while, which initially frightened me the rest of the quality of the meal would also underperform. 3. I felt it was a bit overpriced compared to their tasting menus I've had. I wish they had more hearty and more warm than cold dishes. SERVICE 4 small disappointments, again because is the level of perfection I was expecting: 1. We were initially discouraged from the tasting menu, which I had expressed was the reason we were even visiting in the 1st place. We had 2 kids in tow and perhaps the waiter did not think they could tolerate the 3 hours? It did cause confusion in the beginning but we eventually got our meal started. 2. I am usually used to small surprises and small tastes thrown here and there inbetween the courses, but they did not do that here. 3. I had to open the door for myself twice while pushing my stroller, once when there were 3 gentlemen sitting at the reception desk. 4. My toddler is a picky eater, and was not interested in the 2 meal options they offered. She sat quietly for the 3 hour meal and they never offered her anything. Like some acknowledgement of her good behavior, paper & pen to draw, a small piece of chocolate? Overpriced Michelin place. The food isn't bad of course- but it cost twice as much as comparable options in Spain, and four times what a non "Michelin-rated" equivalent would be. You can find this type of food a lot of places. You're paying a lot for the star- and it simply wasn't worth it, and even if you want the star- it costs more than any other Michelin place we've been to - while being no better. The trip was cute I guess- but it ended up making the meal include many subpar Asian dishes and a fricking hamburger. Place should stick with what it can do well- instead of being an overpriced cultural buffet with a bunch of subpar dishes. I wrote the above right after the meal- and then guess what- my wife and I got food poisoning. We had eaten different things for breakfast and lunch, so we know it was this restaurant. We were throwing up and vomiting for 12 hours, and did nothing for the next day besides lie in bed and sleep(the last day of a 6 day overseas trip). We spoke to the restaurant and because they had to protect their reputation- they denied denied denied. They did- without admitting liability- offer to give us a free meal if we (never) come back to Spain. Thanks a lot- fake token offer. They would not refund, or transfer anything. They are part of the Mandarin Oriental hotel chain, so we at least asked for credit at a room or dining locally in the US- but they would not do this. What a phony gesture. read more

Fine it's pricey, but didn't you expect that from Mandarin Oriental? After you eat, the chef comes to say hi. It's a great place. Takes at least an hour and a half to two hours to eat. Amazing service and detail to every food plate you get. You truly see the definition of food as an art form. (and of course with tremendous taste. I loved every penny I spent here for the lunch special, which was a smaller course designed for lunch portions, and was perfect for me) I felt so full after the many small dishes. There were maybe 4 appetizers and 5 entrees and two or three desserts. Yes, this was the shortened menu. I loved it so much, I wanted to come back for dinner or lunch the next day, but it was filled up, so get the reservation while you can. It's a very popular place you know. read more

IT DOESN"T GET ANY BETTER My wife and I came here for "lunch" in April and opted for the tasting menu they call The Trip - 15 courses. Each course (and, yes, they were small) represented a different city in which a Mandarin Oriental Hotel is located. Over three hours later we staggered out and down Passeig de Gracia very happy and well fed indeed. With few exceptions, every small course was superb. The ambiance and service was perfect. Amazing tasting menu! I had never done a tasting menu with wine pairings but this one was as fabulous as it gets. The service from start to finish was outstanding. The waiters were very attentive and the delicious choices of different and elegantly prepared, generous morsels of goodness were simply like a gastronomic delight. The sommelier was knowledgeable and the wine was perfectly paired with each dish that magically appeared at just the right intervals. The ambiance, decor, and chef creativity were nothing short of expectation. It was fun to be able to watch the chefs preparing the food through a large, sound-proof window beyond our table. Then there's a team of hard-working chefs in the open kitchen. We ordered à la carte, but were also given some dishes from the 13-course tasting menu, in case we wonder what's going on around us! All dishes are highly creative and complex, with an explosion of contrasting flavours and textures. Some are absolutely exquisite ('coca', squab); the seafood dishes except those with lobster happened to be a bit too salty (tuna tartare, rice with prawns in broth). I give it three stars because of the taste and the ambiance. The service and the presentation was worthy of two Michelin stars. The ecosystem tasting menu felt contrived and the taste and texture of the dishes seemed disjointed and in many ways bland to close to distasteful, to us at least. The tables are too close together so that a larger party few tables over with a rather boisterous Spaniard was drowning out the servers presentation of the dishes throughout the whole night. It frankly does not compare to Lesarte which is only one block away and nearly the same price since they don't ask for a tip on their check. I almost told the maitre de that I didn't like the dinner when he asked is if we enjoyed air meal but didn't have the heart to disappoint him. read more

This is a 2 Star Michelin Restaurant in the Mandarin oriental Hotel. I emailed to make a reservation for two people. I have traveled to Europe extensively and have been to many Michelin starred restaurants. This restaurant wanted a deposit of Euro125 per person to secure a table. I was shocked that the deposit went "non -refundable" 24 hours before the actual dinner event. WOW....your business is so weak that you can't just take the reservation of a hotel guest. The food might be great ....but at this point why would I care? There are MANY other nice restaurants in Barcelona. Lot's of luck trying to lock patrons into a non-refundable deposit. If there were any disappointing meals in Barcelona, it was Moments. We went for lunch and had the tasting menu called "the Trip" which was supposed to take you on a culinary experience through 14 cities/dishes around the world. The only really Michelin-worthy dish was "Paris," which was a fois gras macaron. Delicious foie gras and creative presentation. "New York" was a boring burger and "fry" (really fried mash potato) that you can get anywhere (and I'm from NYC). Everything else was cooked well but boring, expected and completely not memorable. A truly memorable dining experience. We were looking to have lunch at the sister restaurant in St Pol de Mar but it's not open for the season yet. While we were skeptical of the location inside the Mandarin Oriental, once inside we didn't give it a second thought. Lunch tasting menu was incredible and a steal for EUR 65. They had a cheese supplement for EUR 9 that was well worth adding. Monk fish and the shrimp dishes were the highlights of the tasting. I had a wine pairing as well that was great. Come hungry. I made reservations to this place because I could not get into the other Michelin rated restaurant in Barcelona. We were worried that we may not get in because we made the reservations before the weekend when they are closed and didn't know if they received the reservation which was made online. We called on the morning they opened, which was also the day of our reservation, to confirm; we were happy that they confirmed our 1:30pm reservation. We arrived and were greeted and sat at our table right away. We were asked if we had any food allergies and were told that the theme for the tasting menu was Movies and the Title was called "Inspired by the Seventh Art" We chose this tasting menu and the adventure began. We were given a ticket stub to start, After the stub was a theater PLAYBILL I don't want to make this a huge review but will let the pictures speak for themselves. The experience was completely amazing and the food was just incredible. At the end of the meal the chef came out to each table to thank us and ask how it was. I'm not expert at Michelin rated restaurants and this is the second one I have been too and must say that I am surprised this doesn't have 3 stars yet. I just couldn't believe food could taste this amazing. It was a pleasure eating here and I think the value of the meal was worth every euro. We have been to restaurants that may have charged more that leaves you wondering what did you pay for, yet Moments was not like that at all we were happy with the price and the amount of food and the experience. I would come back here in a heartbeat. We've eaten in many Michelin starred restaurants, but this is probably my favourite meal. I love the idea of a passport that covers fourteen cities. By the end of dish two, I thought I could make it. By the end of dish seven, I was worried I wouldn't make it home. The sommelier is fantastic. He doesn't recommend a sweet wine with the foie, and it soon becomes apparent why -- the foie is a macaroon. I'm (sadly, guiltily) a fan of foie; having had extraordinary Quebec and Paris foie meals, I can still say this is by far the best foie I've ever had. The Madrid course forced me to fight back tears. It was one of the best things I've had in my life. We have lived in New York, London, and eat in France and Italy on a regular basis. We have many dishes we love, and for which we will travel. But this meal was an experience on its own. To me, it was better than three-starred meals I've had. There were a few dishes I would change. The Bodrum dish is great, but its tastes clash a bit with what is before and after. The Tokyo dish is a little forgettable. The Barcelona dish, many people's favourites, has a bit too much salt for me -- as does the Milano. With that said, the Paris, Madrid and the New York dishes made me want to cry with joy. When I read that a single French fry accompanied the New York burger, I was intrigued. In fine dining as in martial arts movies, the less of something, the more you can expect; 100 villains do no damage, but expect a lot from a single villain. The same was true of this French fry. It came coated eight times -- ketchup, wasabi?, mushroom, and raspberry??, each twice. Salty, but unbelievable. I read a review where the person thinks one can get these in New York anywhere. We lived in New York; you can get these at the places reserved three months in advance. Some critics think a restaurant must have no errors to be perfect. I disagree. To have some flaws is human -- and also a matter of taste. Some of the dishes could be overhauled (Tokyo, Milano). But some of the dishes I find too salty -- eg Barcelona -- are many critics' favourite. I don't rank this experience based on (lack of) flaws, I rank it based on my peak moments. And it had so many. The Madrid dish alone made me fight tears. And so many flavours made me this experience unique. It had the intensity of love of food we often look for in two and one-starred restaurants. It had the intensity we expected but didn't find in three-starred experiences. I would give this restaurant three stars for making me remember why I fell in love with food in the first place. The lows (Milano) don't take away from that. I am grateful to a restaurant the makes me feel this level of love. I suppose that's all one can ever ask. And the menu is perhaps the most challenging we've seen a chef set out for themselves. I believe it takes growing up in a city to understand it. Indeed, we've been to all but two of the fourteen cities, but would have no idea how to create local flavours for most of them. Surely enough, some dishes were too western to be Asian -- Tokyo and Shanghai come to mind (Bangkok nailed the fish sauce perfectly). Yet Shanghai was one of my favourite dishes. So how does one evaluate the experience? Again, I fall back on my peaks and troughs. And the peaks make this a moment I want to relive in my life. I wish I could say the same of most famous dishes in the world. Go, and live every moment. read more

OK .. the dumpling they made is not great , come on , you are a Michelin star place but do not how to do a good dumpling? and why use a mini burger to represent NY ? and it was nothing special ?!! if you going to make a burger without the WOW , then why do it ?? I rather they skip this dish and give me something better .for the price 166 euro a head , surly it wasn´t a great trip to me, the bangkok and shanghai dishes are joke coz I lived in Bangkok and I am a shanghainese and I do not know what they are doing ? this menu is totally waste of time ...
