I took my mom to see an eye doctor last year, and we ended up getting her progressive lenses filled at LensCrafters it cost me $1,000 out of pocket since she doesn't have insurance. I saw it as an investment, something that would last. But only a few months later, she started telling me she couldn't see well again. This was a huge issue because she loves to read it's one of her main joys and ways to stay engaged. I wasn't sure what to do next. I hesitated to take her to another doctor, wondering how her vision could change so quickly. But I started calling around, only to find that most eye exams were $200-$400, which was out of reach financially. Then I found Optical Express at Bascom Palmer (University of Miami Eye Institute) offering exams for just $100. I was honestly apprehensive about the quality of care at that price, and some of the Yelp reviews made me even more unsure but I went ahead and got us on the cancellation list. Luckily, they called with an earlier appointment. And I'm so glad I gave them a chance. The doctor who saw my mom was absolutely incredible. From the moment we walked in, he was warm, patient, and kind. He immediately noticed that my mom had a disability, and he took extra care to explain everything clearly to her never rushing, never frustrated, just deeply compassionate. He treated her like family. As her caretaker, I'm usually the one explaining things to her after appointments, but he took that burden off my shoulders. It meant a lot. Even more importantly, he discovered that the original prescription she'd received last year was incorrect. He spent 30-40 minutes carefully examining her vision and correcting the mistake. I saw a review saying a doctor only spent 5 minutes with them but that couldn't have been further from our experience. He was thorough and thoughtful. After the exam, we went over to the glasses side of the clinic, and I was bracing myself for another high bill. But Natasha who helped us was so kind and understanding. She listened to our situation and worked with us to find a price we could afford. She even helped me brainstorm ways to get my mom back to the clinic (since she doesn't drive), going above and beyond in every way. We're coming back next week to pick up the new lenses, but I already feel confident recommending this place to anyone especially if you're looking for a compassionate, competent doctor and staff who truly care. read more

Factory! Its truly a horrific experience which they do pre-warn you. They suggest you bring a drink and something to eat ( nice gesture) since you may be sitting and waiting for hours... and hours... and hours! If you're one who has to go often for injections in both eyes, it becomes a full day of a depressing atmosphere. Sad to see so many people with horrible eye diseases and even more heartbreaking when you see young children and very elderly needing assistance to just walk the hallway, sitting patiently for so many hours. Horrible experience. Usually go to the Miami campus but saw a retina specialist in Plantation. I was there over 3 hours and saw the doctor for 5-6 minutes. She had no time to answer questions; she was not particularly friendly; it reminded me of an assembly line of patients and she was just going through the motions. Dad went to get a eye surgery on Thursdays June 18, today June 20 he's in a lot of pain and he doesn't want to show up because of the COVID-19 when he left the nurse gave him a phone number to call if he have any questions or a lot of pain we called no answer we decided to look for another phone number and they answer quick but very rude and cold receptionist, Lydia was the last receptionist that answer my call and she transferred me while I was talking explaining my frustration . Attached is 2 pictures one for an hour and so from my phone and the other from my moms and NO ONE HAS ANSWER !!!!!! I heard this hospital was #1 in Florida for this kind of surgeries but on customer service and commitment with the patience it's the worst !!!! read more

I have to admit, I was scare of having a surgery in a middle of this pandemic and protests in Miami, but I was waiting since last year to have this surgery that I couldn't wait any longer, to be honest, I was looking x a good doctor and a reliable hospital x many years, finally I got the best eye hospital in the city with an excellent cornea specialist Dr Ragul Tonk at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, he was patient, friendly, emphatic and very professional, as well as his entire crew of nurses, they were all bilinguals, making the whole process easier x me. Having spent 25+ years in the healthcare industry, this was a 5 star experience. The people were outstanding and almost everyone went above and beyond. I was accompanying my daughter for a visit but was so impressed, I would consider using UM Bascom Palmer for my future services! My father has been going regularly to this location for treatments for his eyes for several years now, but just recently he asked me to leave a review for the nurse who assists with his eye injections. Rebecca Budyszewick is the RN who has prepared his eye for the injections for the past 6 months, and he is so grateful for her skilled hands and her excellent bedside manner. When she's there, he says his injections are almost painless and he can't even feel it. The way she prepares his eye is unlike any other nurse he's had. I visited Bascom Palmer for a post surgical follow up. The medical staff, as always, was outstanding. But I'm not going back due to the Facility's disregard for patient safety and time. I exited the elevator to the 3rd floor and was immediately appalled at what I saw. Typically overbooked whenever I visited the facility, but this time it was a nightmare of overbooking and overcrowding, with a large number of people sitting almost shoulder to shoulder in the check-in area for 15 or more minutes, just waiting to be processed for check in. All were wearing the loosely fitting surgical masks dispensed by and required by the facility. (I had to remove my N95 as I could not wear 2 masks and still breathe) Following check-in, people were sent to one of 2 narrow corridors, seated again close to others, where they waited for up to an hour (or more) to be seen by a technician. Following that wait, patients were redirected to a different, equally crowded corridor to sit and await their physician visit. I arrived at 12:20 for my 12:30 appointment and by 2:05 had not yet seen my physician. I was told there were still 2 patients ahead of me. Concerned about such prolonged exposure to so many other folks in view of rising Covid-19 rates, I left -- having not seen my physician. Now I either need a new appointment here or with a new medical office to ensure my surgeries (2) went ok. Totally unprofessional of the Facility's booking staff. read more

If you're dropping someone off, it is best to just leave and not wait for them. I have seen people waiting not be able to go inside to even go to the bathroom. I have even some people peeing in the parking lot behind a bush. The staff at the front door are very unfriendly too. read more

After bad experiences in the eye institute in Ocala as well as terrible experience at dr ward on Inverness we were blessed to see Dr Yehoshua at Bascom Palmer who showed to us that my husband had a mini eye stroke, something that the other doctors did not mention. Horrible experience! I was referred to this place by my previous ophthalmologist and ended up with $1600 bill for a second opinion (more like 3rd opinion).The exams I had at UM Bascom Palmer in Plantation were all the same I've been doing for the past 7 yrs. I've never had to pay more than a $100 for a visit, before. Another thing I would like to add is that if you happen to go there be ready to spent the entire day there. I am so grateful to be able to go to Bascomb Palmer in Plantation. I have a top notch eye specialist, Dr. Janet Davis, who accurately diagnosed my extremely rare eye disease within a very short time (some peopke wait years for a diagnosis, she nailed ut within 3 months). She is a perfectionist and a stickler for having tests done her way, and her staff is on their toes to perform to her satisfaction. The first time I saw her I had to spend the entire day in Miami, the main offices. I was amazed about everything, from her assistants, to the technology, to the coordination of treatment. When I found out she was accessible one day a month in Plantation, I was thrilled (15 min from home), as I must be seen at least every 3 months for many tests. While there is no cure for this condition, I have faith that Dr. Davis will keep me from possibly losing my sight! Blessings to this institute! read more
