Have an extra hour to stand out in the freezing cold messing around with the buggy Uhaul app? If not, try Ryder. We arrived on time to pick up our scheduled rental, but were directed to go through an endless gauntlet of BS on the buggy Uhaul app. App is extremely user-unfriendly and contradictory - except for the part where $19.99 turns into over $100 with extra fees, it sure did that efficiently enough. The vehicle warned that there was an issue with the tire pressure safety system, we brought this to the attention of the attendee and was told that this was normal as the sensor must have fallen off. He then kicked the rear tire in question and told us that it would be fine and to "have fun!" and reminded us to 'drink plenty of water.' Uhaul's system attempted to gaslight us by sending a text message 'reminding' us of our scheduled time to return the truck - 5 hours early. We confirmed in the app that the text message was wrong, but upon dropoff (another half hour and horrid experience out in the freezing cold), it tried to bump up the charge. Attendant said that we were either late, over mileage, or had not fully filled the gas; all three of which were untrue. I recommend trying another company. If you are forced to rent from this location, take note: when they ask if they can introduce you to the app, you should probably say 'no, I don't have a smartphone'. Returned a truck to this location during business hours but none of the employees could be bothered to handle the return. We sat in the vehicle and waited for an employee to come out and handle the return as the sign instructed us to do. Two employees stood in front of the truck having a spirited conversation and ignoring us until after ten minutes they walked inside the building leaving us there. Since none of the employees seemed to be interested in handling the turn-in, we used the app and did the after hours return. Once we completed the after hours turn-in, we were prompted to move the truck out of the turn-in lane and park in the lot, then take a picture to upload it into the app. Instead, I walked inside where four employees were standing around as one customer was walking out. I tossed the keys on the counter and commented about how busy they were and thanked them for leaving us out there unattended to. I've been a customer here for over a decade. They have always been friendly and helpful when I have a question or need something. I like the option of auto billing so I can avoid forgetting to pay, because sometimes life gets busy and we forget things! There are a variety of different sized storage units to choose from, so you should be able to find something at your desired price. You can also add services Kim having them sign for packaged, dumpster use, whatever you need one time or every month. TLDR: Thieves and Liars, do not go here. Literally go to any other U-Haul than this place, that only had incompetent employees. I rented a truck from U-Haul at this location to be picked up on the evening of the 2nd of August, 2024. I was told to check in via my phone and the app. Well, besides the fact that the app was buggy, and it took us about an hour to pick it up. When we finally got a vehicle, well it wouldn't start. We tried for about 30 minutes. It began once, and then it wouldn't start again. Mind you this is now 10 o'clock in a dark dingy parking lot and area. So we called their roadside assistance, who first said we had to figure out what the problem was otherwise she wouldn't help. We couldn't, so she said she was dispatching a tow truck. We had our location and told her we were sitting in the U-Haul parking lot and could not go anywhere. After an hour or so of wait, the tow truck driver called us and said that the roadside assistance lady sent him to Middletown, CT, which is nowhere close to where we were. The tow truck driver said that it will take at least 1 hours at the least for him to send someone else. Which means that tow truck driver would arrive around 12:30 AM. Seeing how unsafe this was we came back to our apartment, which we had already moved out of, and paid our landlord for one more night. Next day we went back, and what transpired is horrendous. When we went in there, Mr. Receding hairline (as others have said), proceeded to take us to the U-Haul, and said, I kid you not, "you have to insert the key and then take it out a little bit for the car to start." According to him we should have known this little "trick." He kept babbling that it is not a "trick." How is it not a trick that you have to do something other than turn the keys to start a truck? This place is filled with scammers, and incompetent employees. AVOID AVOID AVOID. I will be asking UConn grad organization to send an email out to grad students to ask them to avoid this place at any cost. Do yourself a favor management, and fire that incompetent employee, against whom multiple people here have complained. read more

The truck was great and price very fair. Furthermore, we hired "helpers" through U-Haul and our guys were great and economical versus hiring movers. And these guys WERE (professional) movers. All in all it worked out really well. The stress in the process is picking up the truck. Not enough employees working on weekends to handle the volume of people. We picked up Friday evening and there were only two people checking out rentals and each transaction takes time. I finally got through that and went I went to leave my truck was blocked in. So I had to wait again to get someone to move a truck. Then I get in and the gas change is 1/4 tank less that what they said and I had signed for - more aggravation. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Manchester 432 Oakland St, Manchester, CT 06042 I rented a 20' truck and added the insurance to just get a call that I have to pay for damage to two tires because insurance doesn't cover it. They are trying to say that all this tire wall damage is from me. They never even told me to check tires and now they say it's my fault for not checking tires. They didn't come out for initial inspection but came out to inspect when I returned. Then got told it's the employees fault for not telling me to take photos of the tires but I'm still the one that got charged $483. I didn't even hit a pot hole. Every time I have been here there are only one or two people working the desk with a line of customers to the door. Keep in mind when I set up this unit I purchased this with an automatic payment option. Tell me why a month and a week later, I receive a phone call from my father ( who isn't even listed as an emergency contact on my contract ) tells me that the UHaul center is threatening to cut my locks on my unit because of NON-PAYMENT??? WHAT????? So now I have to try to call back the next day ( May 25th) and NOONE is picking up the phone to be able to resolve my issues about this situation. Even when you get transferred to a headquarters rep, the callback service doesn't even work and nothing is helpful about this business. The return and pick up two weeks later was also hassle free. Thanks Uhaul!!!! I recently needed to rent a motorcycle trailer because my Harley needed work. Online to Uhaul for the most convenient location. The website led me to the Oakland St. Manchester location. I arrived on my scheduled date and time and the young man working the desk quickly and courteously got me checked in and set up. No pressure to buy any of their accessories. And also a serious review of my towing situation to ensure a safe experience. I pulled out back and the trailer was hitched to my truck. Quickly and efficiently. The next afternoon was also a great experience. I pulled into the return lane and was checked in from my truck. The young man working the line even unhitched the trailer for me. I thought I would need the trailer again soon so I went inside to set up a reservation. This time a young woman got me set up with the trailer reservation. The trailer was is great shape and exactly what I needed. The shop was clean and well lit. The employees that I worked with were all courteous and efficient. Staff is miserable and lazy. My husband and I weren't sure what size vehicle to get to transport our piece of furniture so we asked one of the workers about the dimensions of their van. The staff member didn't bother checking the dimensions and just told us to "go look at the van outside." Service is very slow for no reason. I almost feel bad for the people who work for this company or rather this specific location. U Haul must treat their workers so crappy if they are this miserable and inattentive to their customers. Made no effort to rectify the situation, picked it up in the morning --- was texted a different dropoff location than was agreed upon and customer service could not confirm which dropoff was right. I would give this place 1.5 stars if i could, but I will be generous and go with 2 stars. I've used this location on a number of occasions for the sole reason that they have good prices and have the largest selection of trucks around. That is enough to get 1 star. The other star is because the managers here seem to genuinely want to help, and are reasonable people. That's worth the other start. Other than those 2 points, things here are pretty crappy. Smaller trucks are usually in OK shape, but be careful if you get a large truck. I rented a 26' truck last week and right from the start it was a problem. It did not start when they went to pull it around, so the manager had to spend 20 minutes trying to jump it. Once it finally started, I was told to leave it running at least 30 minutes to make sure the battery charges (and of course the gas would be my cost). The truck was in awful shape. Had 160,000 really tough miles on it. Parts of the exterior were missing, the seats were ripped and the mirrors were so loose they wouldn't stay in place. It was a giant hazard on the road. The brakes were also an adventure. They were air brakes that squeaked and squealed and it always sounded like there was a leak. Perhaps i am not familiar with air brakes, but it did not feel safe. The real problems came up at the end of the day. The guy checking the trucks back in was not helpful in telling me where to park, and finally rudely told me that he wouldn't help me til i moved the truck to a specified spot. Upon inspecting the truck, he wrote down that i went 200 miles extra, and that i returned the truck with an empty tank. When I indicated his mistake, he said "not my problem" and sent me inside. The gauge on the truck was hardly accurate and it really depended on the hill. U-haul conveniently has their drop off section on an upward incline, which is steeper than where I picked up the truck. After going inside, i waited in line 25 more minutes until i talked to someone with common sense. I showed my gas receipt and showed that i put in 7 gallons after only driving 21 miles. She finally went outside and realized that i was right and fixed my bill. She said "the guy outside mistook a 6 for an 8" and thats why he was off 200 miles. Thank god I returned the truck when they were open, otherwise i would have been charged and not been able to argue. Keep that in mind when you rent from here. Thats just one of the many fun stories i could tell about this place. You have to go in with the lowest expectations and then you won't be angry at the end of the day. Needed a trailer hitch installed on my SUV. I was told the parts needed to be ordered and will take a week. I made an appointment for 9AM one week later. While preparing to drive to their location, I got a phone call from them saying that I would have to come in the next day because they were booked up. They gave me an 8AM appointment saying I would be first in. I arrived at 7:50 AM and someone else was already in having a hitch installed. Long story short, my SUV didn't get in until 9:30. I called on the phone 4 times, their recorded message on the phone states their calls are recorded so they can "keep our promises to you"..... Well all 4 times I called I Never received a call back as promised. I decided to walk in the Manchester, CT store to make an appointment seeing I could not accomplish that over the phone. When I arrive there the store manager has me waiting while she waves while she washes a returned box truck. I didn't have a problem with that. What I found extremely annoying and made me annoyed was when she tells me I have an appointment scheduled, hands me a piece of paper that has the date, time, and location written on it. When I arrive to my appointment and I'm told I don't have an appointment. The store manager of the store calls the manager at the other store and is on speaker phone so obviously I can hear her lie and say "I never scheduled that, I only told her(me) which store had the products in stocks but I didn't schedule an appointment." I was given a Quote only NOT an appointment: What a waste of my time!! Now after having what I thought was an appointment at 12 its now 2:52 and I'm still sitting here waiting to be called in. THIS IS BAD FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE!! Let's not forget the part where I had to rent and pay for milage (.69 cents per mile with ZERO included) and a van so I could leave the property while they install the hitch on my vehicle!! This review is about buying moving supplies, boxes etc. ONLY. We did not rent anything from them. This is a nice little moving supplies store. We were able to pick up king size mattress covers that were really thick and will not tear at a reasonable price, the box selection is good but slightly overpriced, we bought the same boxes at Walmart for about $1/box. We did pick up some very nice white wrapping paper for our dishes and other breakables here, a huge box of it for only $10. We shopped around and this was a great deal. They have everything you may want to purchase here and the little store is clean. One complaint: There was only one man in there to run the register, and he was stuck on the phone with a customer for about 10 minutes before he could ring up the customer before us and ourselves. You would think that during the weekend in the summer which is the most busy time for people moving you'd have 2 people in there working, especially if the one worker in there has to deal with customers who are renting as well as running the register. read more

Each time I called the local phone number, I was farmed out to the Nationwide call center. Seems they are always too busy to answer in the store. Long story short. . .they had my truck when I arrived but had my reservation as 12 hours, not 24. After discussion they agreed to give it to me for my original reservation of 24 hours- leaving the next customer without. Perhaps if someone in the local store took the phone calls such mistakes wouldn't occur. Rental reservations should be without error given this is what their company is built on. This is a 5 star truck rental location. I don't understand why it's avg rating is only 2 stars. In the last 5 months I've rented 3 15 foot bed trucks. Twice to the south shore and once locally. Each time I was given a healthy truck with great tread on the tires. There's no hidden costs, they send an email before pick up with estimated costs per the amount of days or if only one day, they ask how many miles you plan to use and they tell you how much they will charge a mile. Picking up the vehicle is a matter of minutes and same for return. It's important to check the vehicle for dents and dings and report it before you leave with the vehicle. It's my opinion people don't ask prices before they depart or they ding up the body or they leave it a mess and wonder why Uhaul charges them extra. Those are the ones giving poor reviews read more

Review of 48hr cargo van rental: Service was terrible!! First they gave me the wrong pick up day even though they record the calls for accuracy they still got the day wrong. Next they scheduled me for pick up 7pm. I arrived at 7:02pm and they were closed! So, I had to take a cab there the next day as I had no ride now! When I finally picked up my van, which was for 48hrs, I should have been allowed to return it by 7am 2days later but was told it must be back 7pm (as if I were actually scheduled correctly and picked it up 7pm 2 nights prior!) The scheduling was very simple and straight forward and they screwed it up multiple times! The employees in the store were of no help. When I was upset they wouldn't rent to me at 7:02pm they said "sorry I don't know why you were scheduled for 7 when we close," and locked the door on my face! This review is based on the service (or lack of) that we received in order to get a trailer hitch installed. The original receipt/ reservation was beginning of March and the final install (cuz I persistent to get this done) was end of April - so 1 1/2 months of calling to see where the parts were - most of the staff that answered couldn't even find the contract # and passed me along or promised to call me back and didn't. Eventually we had the hitch installed - it works, but not happy that the wire is inside of the SUV and you need to have it hanging out to attached to trailer! The reply was "there wasn't a part within a 100 miles of here" - ok - no internet? And why did you tell us you had it!? So I gave two stars instead of one because the job was completed and the charge was less than most places - not sure it was worth the aggravation! read more

I don't do this but my experience was so horrible I thought people should know. I bought and paid for a trailer hitch, made an installation appt. When I showed up at my given appointment date and time I was told first "they didn't call you? You need to reschedule. They didn't have the part that I bought that was in stock. What, did they sell my already paid for item to someone else? Not even an apology for wasting my day. Instead blame me tell me I don't have an appointment when I have the email in my hand that says your appointment is Saturday at noon. The employee wouldn't even admit they screwed up. He said it's my fault I first saying I was supposed to wait for someone to call me with an appointment. Then he said I was supposed to call them to make sure they were going to do the job( I have never heard such nonsense) that's what makes making an appointment different than just showing up. Then the thug employee told me if I didn't stop talking I wouldn't get my money back either. Uhaul in Manchester, CT installed a hitch for us and scratched the back of our new car. They denied any responsibility even though scratches were directly above where new hitch was installed. Manchester told us to contact their insurance company, which we did and submitted all paperwork required. Just got word they denied claim saying there was no proof. So we now need to take pics of car with date stamp on it before any work is to be done?? Ridiculous! Will never use uhaul again! read more

We reserved a van for 1pm. We arrived around 1:15 to pick it up and did not leave until after 2pm with a 14 ft truck instead. There was one person helping customers who finally asked another staff to come pick up the slack (we'd been waiting in line 15 min at this point). Then they finally set us up with the paperwork for the van, 15 min later they still couldn't find the keys to the one van on the lot. They ended up upgraded us to the truck (which was quite excessive for moving a dining room table). We had to do over all the paperwork. They did give us the truck at the van rate but then charged us more for insurance. After all this they still wanted the truck back for 5pm. We basically went into maniac mode, got everything done, and got the truck filled back up with gas and back right at 5. Then the guy told us the dolly in the truck was broken (we never even touched it) Needless to say, I had a lot more to complain about than he did with a broken dolly, and he let it go. read more

The rental experience was exactly as it should be - no surprises. I went in to the store a couple of weeks ahead to make my reservation - 15 minutes. Got good advice about what size truck to choose. The day of the rental, the check-in experience was 15 minutes and prices were as expected. Personnel were courteous and efficient. Truck was ready, clean and as expected. Truck was in good mechanical condition and the moving experience was routine. Check-in was 5 minutes and charges were as agreed. To make a long story short... we bought a trailer hitch at the location in Orange, CT. The guy there didn't know how to install it and wanted us to sign a liability waiver. We are a construction company. If this hitch comes undone while one of our guys is cruising down 95 and kills someone, we would be held liable and it could put us out of business. So signing the waiver was not an option for us.I went to this location in Manchester on Thursday, thought I booked an appointment since I was told come back Saturday morning at 10, but when we got there they said we didn't have an appointment. The tech, Mike, installed our hitch between his appointments and everything worked out fine. We had to do the wiring in the parking lot in the pouring rain but the hitch is installed and that's all that matters. We'll be giving this u-haul location all of our truck rental business, which is quite a bit since we're always hauling equipment and large tools around, because Mike and his wife that works at the front desk made it right. read more

After being very upset with columbia ct uhaul and knowing that they did not save my 10x10 climate controlled unit i reserved, i called uhauls 800 number for further units in other towns. I figured i'd give them one more chance. I was completely wrong. No one at uhaul gave me the time of day after the longest day of life happened thanks to uhaul except anthony. Other managers hung up on me but anthony listened and than later would not return my calls. Anyway, they reported having a 10x15 x6 climate controlled unit they would rent us. We showed up moving truck in all and come to find out it was actually 2 very small units not a 10x15 that i being a 5'6" female could not stand up in. Needless to say this was not going to work out. Also because uhaul columbia wasted our time earlier the workers in manchester said we would only have an hour to move in because the alarms would go off. How do you move all of your stuff in an hour!!! We had to than pay for another night with the moving truck and not go to my husbands uncles funeral the next day to attempt to move again. Thankfully we have a great friend jeremy who found an amazing storage unit in east hartford with a 10x20 climate controlled unit. Prepaid for a hitch install at Oakland St location in Manchester CT. Location called as promised and set appointment up for 8am next Thursday. Arrived a7:45am and checked in. Clerk took keys and said 3-4 hour install. Informed them I did not have a ride so I was going to walk to Dunkin Donut and do some work on computer. (about a mile away). Verified they had my number in case anything came up. Walked back 3 hours later to find the Jeep had not been touched. Walked inside to inquire and they said hitch installer does not come in until 1pm. THEY set the appointment up!!! They took my keys at 7:45 am. They didn't have the courtesy to call me after I have been sitting in a donut shop for 3 hours. So now 3-4 hours from 1pm or reschedule. Then another guy walks up and says they probably don't have the hardware on hand for the install. I'm just standing there shaking my head. Never seen such colossal stupidity. No regard for customer at all. Grabbed my keys-had them refund my pre paid hitch install and went elsewhere. Wasted a day off, a week waiting for their call and 1/2 a day in the donut shop. Why businesses fail. I will never use uhaul again for anything. Wonder if anyone at Uhaul cares. read more
