What made my experience at U C Cyclery so exceptional? Jessica! Over the summer, I visited the lovely city of San Diego with my family, whose purpose for this particular trip was to train with the 1971 World Table Tennis Champion, Stellan Bengtsson (fancy, huh?). Since I don't share my family's common interest, I opted to rent a road bike with the intent to explore the city on my own. Prior to this trip, I had only known mountain bikes and had zero experience with a road bike, which is considerably lighter and has thinner tires. Jessica did a stellar job at educating me on how to properly use and adjust the gears, which was the trickiest part for me. She took the time to jot down easy-to-understand instructions and tips (ex. which combination of the front and back gears to use when traveling uphill). By the end of the visit, I was definitely more educated in road bikes and bikes in general. Jessica went above and beyond my expectations. I was thoroughly impressed by her patience and commitment to ensure that I was comfortable and well-informed with all aspects of my rental. Knowing that I'm new to town and to road bikes, she even went the extra "mile" by printing off directions back to my hotel with the least amount of hills for an easier commute. Everything from the initial phone call to the test ride to walking out the door with my newly rented Ruby Expert road bike was excellent. I haven't been to a lot of other bike shops, but this one helped me out a lot in finding a bike meant for commuting. I wasn't sure where to go or what I needed, but the guys here definitely found me the bike that was suitable. As a working professional who doesn't have a car and there is limited parking in the parking lot, I need to find a reliable mode of transportation that I could use and finding this bike was the best option for me. I asked the guys here what I would need and they all recommended to me that I get the Specialized Sirrus Sport. This bike was in my price range between $450-850 and since some of it was going to be reimbursed, I felt that I was getting a great deal. The bike itself has been fantastic and I haven't had issues. They made sure I was fitted to the bike while also ensuring I knew the laws (making sure I have my lights for when it gets dark). In addition, they also told me more information about the bike that I had never known before, such as what a presta valve is, how to use my legs and not drop my heels, and also make sure I stay hydrated. Rude salesman, over anxious on determining if the conversation will lead to a sale today.

I'm very careful. If I buy anything it needs to be good value and I need to get good service. I've been a mountain biker for maybe 15 years and for at least 5 years I've been planning to get a road bike. Finally had the cash available. I shopped around a bit, read reviews on the internet, talked to bikers. Eventually and for the first time, I walked in to UC Cyclery, busy place, lots going on, and a lot of bikes. Ended up talking to Edwin who showed me his range and narrowed it down to a type of bike, the right size etc.. Mainly he was able to show me the Specialized bike I'd read about, the right size for me and at a reasonable price. He advised me to go for a somewhat upgraded model and gave me the spec sheet. I rarely buy on first visit so I went away to think about it. Summer came, the Tour de France was on tv. I saw the Specialized commercials and I eventually went back. Edwin spent a lot of time making sure the gearing was right for the riding I planned. Never pushed me, only advised. I felt I had found the right bike and the right guy to look after me. Very happy with my new bike, very happy I have a place to take it to for tune-ups. This was 2 weeks ago and I've lost 8 pounds already. read more

Don't bother with this place for help with your bike they were no help for me. I was trying to fix up a 6 year old mountain bike and went there to get some brake pads for the front disk break. The guy there took a look and said he didn't know what to do or where I could get break pads for this bike. He didn't even seem to want to help. So it was really a wasted trip. I went over to a different bike shop and they were able to hook me up quick. They seem like they might be ok for buying a bike as the shop had a bunch of them; but I would not go here for bike service needs or parts. read more

A great place to buy or service a bike. These guys don't work on commission so there is never any overselling. I pass 4 other bike shops from my house to get here and it's well worth it, on the rare occasion where I'm in a hurry and go to a closer bike shop I almost always regret it. I don't ride a bike. I push a wheelchair. I break things, get flats and wear out tires often. While I sit and wait for repairs, I watch the whole place operate. These guys know their stuff and expertly and patiently help everyone that walks in the door. I wasn't always in a wheelchair. I actually bought a BMX bike from these guys when I was a kid (I am now 39). When my old wheelchair shop started to suck, I tried UCC again and never went back to the wheelchair place again. After riding an entry-level hybrid for a few years, I decided to "step-up" to a carbon-frame road bike...after looking at numerous bike shops and getting the brush-off (not willing or able to talk me through bike options and/or no inventory until 2022), I found UC Cyclery. Everyone I interacted with there, from sales to service to post-sale customizing, was professional, helpful and knowledgeable. They went above and beyond to help me and ensure satisfaction with my investment. I'd especially like to call out the two Dave's and Rudy - they took the time to educate a novice on road bikes and customized my bike to meet the needs of a middle-aged body with multiple old injuries! Dave and Rudy evaluated my motion both on a trainer and on the bike in the parking lot, multiple times, making tweaks and changes to ensure the proper fit of saddle, handlebar, pedals, etc - allowing me to get the best performance out of the bike while also maximizing my comfort for long rides. Vince at UCC fit my 2017 Roubaix that I've had for over 4,000 miles. Even though a Roubaix is a very comfortable ride, I thought it did not fit well. I used measurements from another bike that I was fitted for. Vince fine tuned adjustments all around - including bike cleats - and replaced the stem. Results were outstanding! Much more comfortable and efficient. Price for this service is less than other shops too. Highly recommended! read more

Nice place Went there for a tune up for my bike when I got it out of storage (2 years!). But the guy on duty let me know it was still pristine and didn't need a tune up now at all. Instead he tightened a couple things and lubed the chain up and sent me on my way. Refused to take anything. I appreciate the honesty and being so gracious so I will come back next time when I actually do need a new tune up and def check there first for my next bike. read more

Awesome bike place for a first visit. My coworker recommended that I visit this shop, but I never had a reason to go, until I had to buy new cycling shoes. I was in the market to buy Specialized Trivent shoes, especially since the official website was holding a closeout sale on them for $90, down from $150 originally. Having learned about the inconsistent nature of shoe sizing between brands, I needed to try on a pair before going ahead. I called UCC, an official Specialized dealer, and asked to try on the shoe at different sizes. I met Abe, who immediately was able to recall my coworker, and he helped me through the sizes. I got my size down and was ready to go home and order the pair, when Abe offered to give me the shoes at the website price. I was stunned at his offer, and quickly took it - this is a pair of shoes I've been eyeing since last July, man! He was helpful and amiable throughout my visit, and I felt I was given a top-notch deal on the spot. Like previous reviewers mentioned, he invited me to check out the shop's Saturday morning bike rides, complete with free coffee, fruit, and energy snacks from the get-go. Decided to check this store out since it is near my work, hoping to find another local bike shop I could frequent for parts, accessories & etc. I was pretty disappointed. It's a really small store. There seems to be a lot of stock they have crammed in there, but nothing of much worth. Prices were a bit high. Parking is always a mess in that strip mall. Selection pretty poor on even just tubes. The staff was a bit rude and ignorant. Lucky for them, they have a great location right there next to UCSD. read more

These guys seem to be pretty knowledgeable but they are expensive and the guy's attitude I dealt with was pretty unacceptable. I went in to find this obscure washer which had fallen off of my chain ring and while they did have it and installed it for free, the guy who did it proceeded to lecture me about how rare they are and how I shouldn't loose the piece again like I was a little kid. read more

This was about a year ago... I had a clicking noise near my bottom bracket ( bike had less than a 1000 miles at the time). Also I wanted my shift cable change because the colors did not match. I went in for service at UCC after a SDBC ride to have my clicking noise and my shift cables address. The service rep. sold me a tune up ( stating this will fix the clicking noise), I requested to have my FSA crank chain ring bolt replace( I requested they return my old bolts. they were never returned). I was promised it would be done by Tuesday. Late Tuesday I went to UCC and my bike was still hanging on the ceiling and it wasn't touched. The following Monday (6 day later,cause I was out of town) I called and ask what is going on with my bike. They said it was done. I asked them when it was done. They replied last Tuesday and they had called my cell and left a message ( this was not true). I told them I went last Tuesday and my bike and it was not even touched. I went to pick up my bike and paid $150. I took the bike for a ride and it still had the clicking noise. I told them it had the same noise and they had a rep take it for a ride. I was told it was my carbon seat post and they couldn't fix that. I was very disturbed by their poor service and deceptions. After I arrived at home I notice UCC did not route my shifter cable correctly in the carbon frame recess. Determine to fix my noise, I went to Performance and bought the BB tool, looked on the internet how to disassemble and remove my BB, took my BB to Hi-tech bikes and ask to purchase a new BB. Paul at Hi-tech looked at my BB and said, " there is nothing wrong with it. Put it back and tighten it up " ( He could of sold me one, but he was honest). I listen and followed Hi-tech advice and my noise is gone!!!! I wanted to go back to UCC and request a full refund, but UCC was not worth the trouble. I cut my loss with UCC. I won't spend a dime with them even though I consistently ride with SDBC. Several months after a friend wanted to get into cycling and asked me for a reputable bike shop. I took him to Hi tech to buy a new Masi Bicycle. A month ago I told a friend that I ride with at SDBC to stay away from UCC. And to see the honest people at Hi-tech. He bought a new Scott CR1Bicycle from Hi-tech. I wish I would have YELP prior , I would have seen all these poor UCC reviews. Oh well live and learn. I just moved to San Diego and was excited to get my first all carbon road bike since I can cycle all year round out here! If you're gonna buy a bike, come here and ask for Edwin. He was not only really knowledgable on everything but he also encouraged testing out 3-4 different bikes and took his time while I even tried 2 of the finalists 2-3 more times. After that he fit my bike and gave me some great tips. I will never go to another bike shop anywhere, these guys are the real deal! read more

Nice selection at this store but horrible customer service. I wanted to exchange a helmet I bought here but never wore but their sales rep said that they couldnt exchange it due to the fact that he thought the straps "were damp from wear" after looking at it for five seconds. He then told me he couldnt process exchanges for "worn" items and walked straight to the back. Dont come to this shop as they dont follow their 30 day return and wxchange policy and treat customers unreasonably. read more

After reading a number of reviews for UCC, I'm glad to find that the weird disconnect of this store isn't only obvious to me. On one hand, they can sometimes be condescending--though to be fair, I've only had this experience with the maintenance shop, and not with the sales staff. On the other hand, most of my experiences with UCC have been positive. I had a bike that was so old I couldn't remember when I got it and it was slowly falling apart due to years of abuse. Abraham helped me find a new hybrid bike that suited my riding to work needs. I've since brought my Specialized bike in for maintenance and tried to learn as much as I can about keep it in working order. When purchasing tools or parts, I've found the staff to be knowledgeable and patient, explaining to me my options and which would be most appropriate in a given situation. I liked this a great deal since I'm obsessed with having as much info as possible before making a decision. Their free maintenance has been very useful, both for bike upkeep and for my own information. Car dealerships should add a program like this. :) I have found the prices to be higher than expected, but I'd say this has more to do with the location, since I live close by and my rent is also expensive. Plus, when you're traveling at 20 mph on a city street, you want to be sure that you have quality parts underneath you. Overall, I would recommend this store. But, I am also a relative cycling novice. read more

I like this bike shop since they carry specialized. They have a pretty good selection of bikes and accessories. I picked up a specialized rockhopper here which came with a lifetime tune-up. My cousin picked up a Roubaix here. Nice bike. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you want a Specialized or Giant bike, this is the spot to go. The one gripe I have is they need a newer cash register cus last time, it took too long to ring up like 3 people. It looked pretty ancient. Other than that, everything's good to go. Staff are friendly and willing to answer questions, they don't try and upsell you anything and the bike mechanics are helpful and friendly. No 5 stars because the parking lot is a maze. read more

Fransisco/Cisco worked on truing my wheel, it took about a couple of days before someone actually started working on in but it was worth the wait because that crashed wheel came out 98% I could not be happier! read more

I felt like an idiot coming in because I had broken my tire valve and I wasn't sure how or why. But all the employees were very helpful especially Cisco (sp?) who is very sweet and helped me get my bike in and out of my car, plus had my valve fixed and my chain lived up in about 5 minutes. A couple months ago I helped my fiancé purchase her first road bike at UC Cyclery and both of us could not be happier with the experience. The sales person was very friendly and knowledgeable and he made the process very easy. The bike purchase came with free lifetime tuneups which was a huge selling point. We just took her bike in for her first tuneup and I must say that the mechanic was just as friendly as the sales person. I bought my bike at this shop a while back. All of their stuff is really good quality. The only thing is that they are a bit pricey. The bikes usually range between $700 - 5000. So it can accommodate any need but don't come in expecting anything cheap. read more
