So, i'm looking for a bicycle! Checked out a few shops before coming to this one. A female salesperson met me at the door asked me if i needed any help and i told her what i was looking for. She was friendly, but she didn't know much about a bike i was curious about. So she call another guy. An old dude, not sure if he was a sales-guy or a manager. He asked me if i had any questions about the bike, so asked him. At the same time another customer passed by and it seemed they knew each other. So, without asking me to wait or apologizing, the old dude started to talk with that other customer. Ok, i thought, i could wait. Five minutes later, the customer left, but the old dud was approached by a young salesman with a problem some sort, so they all together took off. And i was there standing all alone for another couple of minutes when i decided that a bike i'd seen in a different store was good enough for me! read more

While UC Cyclery has an excellent overall offering of bikes, clothing and accessories, I will focus this review on the customer service and quality of the mechanic. I'm graciously giving 5 starts because they truly went above and beyond in numerous instances to help me out. Most notably, I brought in a Canyon Aeroad before they began selling them in America with a Rotor powermeter/crank. The bike had been making terrible noises for over a year. I had brought to numerous high end, respected shops in the city. They had gone through quick assessments, changed the bottom bracket, chain, bearings, etc. None of it worked. I was at a loss, as I don't know much about bikes in the first place. Steve at UC took one quick ride on it and told me confidently he would figure it out, and needed to keep the bike for a bit. Within hours he told me what I somewhat suspected, it was a bigger issue with the Rotor crank. Steve contacted a rep at Rotor, discussed the situation, mailed the entire thing to them. This was a huge win for me. Rotor rebuilt it, retested it, sent it back and it is perfect. For anyone who's had the unknown noises coming from a bike that worry you, you know how good it feels for someone to get it right. That's exactly what Steve has done. I feel much better owning these sort of bikes now, knowing the professionals at UC can confidently support all of my needs. I've had my bike serviced at UC Cyclery for the past 10 years and have found the service to be both friendly and professional. Recently I purchased a new Specialized Roubaix Elite with the helpful assistance of Edwin who spent sufficient time with me to insure the bike met my needs. The bike was ordered and ready for pick-up within a few days, as promised. Jon and Steve were both extremely helpful in getting the bike ready including the addition of accessories I added when I am came in to pick up the bike. They spent at least an hour with me to insure that a good fitting was performed and that eveything was to my satisfaction. These folks are friendly and professional. I took my bike in for a tune-up and flat repair. Jon greeted me cheerfully and explained what they could do with my bike, did a quick check, then gave me a good estimate. He even took the time to recommend a good lubricant for my bike. It was a beehive of activity in the repair shop and I was impressed by the cleanliness and good attitude of the folks there. Later that day they called me when my bike was ready, as promised. I have been using this shop since the late 1980's when Dave was located in the West end of UC off of Govenor Drive. I have always recieved exceptional service. I have referred family,friends and recently my renters to this shop. They have all got back to me letting me know how pleased they were. Steve the mechanic that usually works on my bikes is exceptional, always being honest and never trying to over sell etc. I have a mountain bike, 2 road bikes and 2 fixed gear bikes. They recently did a great build up of my SALSA FIXED gear training bike. I have continued all these years to use this shop because of having known Dave since the mid 1980's and he only hires people that not only know what they are selling yet they really know customer service. I need to write a review about this store because this past weekend went in to see if the store had a strap for my broken front light. I had every intention of buying another if needed as well as a rear light. After standing around and having to find someone to ask for help I was rudely told by the guy in the back that they "might or might not have it" and to check online. It was like I was being a distraction to him - as a customer. The guy at the front desk was equally as rude so I went down to California Bicycles where I ended up spending $60 to buy some great lights for my bike. UC Cyclery I will never give any of my money to you because you so obviously DON'T value the customer. Learn the basics of customer service otherwise people will (and are) spending their money elsewhere. read more

Great selection of bikes and equipment and greet location but pricey. Understandably is in a high rent district but they seem much more focused on the sale than the customer service. Like another reviewer said they "nickel and dime" you on things that they should just take care of in the spirit of good customer service particularly if you've spent a lot of $ there. When I was a cycling newbie, I wanted to talk with someone who would give me good customer service and a good direction to go from. I stumbled upon Performance Bike and thought it was a good start. Friendly staff, good selection on beginner bikes for a beginner price range, and had everything I needed to get started. Plus a rewards program! But I didn't buy from there just yet, as I had just heard about U C Cyclery. After going into the store, I was mesmerized by all the fancy bikes tightly lined together. There were a few other people in the store, yet the staff kind of hung around not really doing anything. I was 19 at the time, but still felt a little insulted and got the notion that they just automatically assumed a kid like me wasn't going to buy. I walked up to one staff member who I eventually found out was the store manager. When I asked if they had any membership point systems or discounts, he immediately informed me how superior U C Cyclery was compared to places like Performance because they are a small shop that can offer customer service second to none. When I told him I was interested in getting a beginner bike, he was making it painfully obvious he was more interested in the man wandering around the bikes who was a few years older than me. I couldn't believe I was getting profiled because of my age! His snooty attitude and disregard for my interest. I bought my first road bike from Performance Bike the very next day. Fast forward a few years I'm a pretty seasoned rider. But each time I have gone into that store to pick up something I need (extra tubes, shot blocks for a ride, etc) I leave in absolute disgust and shock from the worst customer service I've ever experienced. They don't care about me, and are full of ****. Their only solution for you is to buy it brand new from their store, no matter how simple the fix. The ONLY good thing they do is help host the Tour de Cure. But even that's just a publicity stunt for business! If TdC goes somewhere else, these guys are down the tubes within the year. Performance Bike, Ride Cyclery, HiTech Bikes, are only a FEW of the many other bike shops with service that caters to every rider, not just the middle aged man with money. I tried to get a hold of the current store manager when I was interested in buying roof racks, and to inquire about their interest in helping a charity 5k event for cancer victims. I spoke directly to the manager (Bob) in the store who gave me his card and told me to email him. He also said he'd follow up with me on the bike racks. I emailed him the next day. No reply for 2 weeks! I emailed again and still no reply a week later. I eventually went back into the store, reintroduced myself and asked if he had gotten any of my emails. He replied "Yes...." just blankly as if there was a follow up to that question. I asked deliberately if there was a time when we'd be able to discuss the possibility for their help in hosting packet pick up or something along those lines. He said maybe. What about our conversation?? What about my emails?? I asked him if there was a way I would be able to get an estimate from someone with my TCSD discount on bike racks and he said he "Wasn't sure. Sorry". I won't even apologize, but what kind of ****-brained response is that? Needless to say, the charity event attracted nearly a thousand people and ended up being sponsored by a different shop. And I bought my bike rack from Ride Cyclery and could NOT be happier. They were on the phone with me immediately after I placed the order, when it arrived, and helped me install it. They gave me immediate assistance if anything went wrong, and if anything will go wrong. I have confidence in them for their support. That is something U C Cyclery will NEVER deliver on. 3 strikes and you're out Bob. I have already directed away thousands of dollars in business from your store, and all my friends are extremely satisfied with their purchases from real stores with real customer service from staff who really care about their customers. You don't deserve it. To anyone considering going to U C Cyclery: just don't. You think you'll be happy but do just a little more shopping around and you'll be much much happier with much much better bikes at much much better prices from any of the bike shops I have mentioned above. read more

I decided to take up cycling in June and bought my first bike from Craigs List. Immediately thereafter I shopped around at several stores, but was unsure of what I needed. As soon as I walked in the door at UC Cyclery, Edwin greeted me and immediately began assisting me. I pretty much just told him to help me figure out what I needed and an hour or so later, I was all set. Most importantly, I felt confident about my purchases. Ever since then, it has been my go-to shop! Hank recently did a fitting for me before I went out for a two day tour and it made a HUGE difference in how I felt on the bike - absolutely worth the money. The owner and staff at UC Cyclery really knocked it out of the park for me last weekend. I arrived in town late in the day for a long "bachelor party weekend" and we immediately rushed off to dinner. We were at dinner when it occurred to me that I had forgotten to pack cycling kit and we were riding early the next morning. It was nearly 8 o'clock at night and every shop I looked into was closed or too far away for me to get to. The owner was happy to talk through his available gear, rung up my order over the phone and sent one of his workers (I can't recall his name I feel bad about that) over to the restaurant to hand-deliver it to me. They even included a nice water bottle for free. This is the kind of outstanding service that brings back loyal and repeat business. I made it a point to visit the shop the next morning. A very nice operation and all of the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. My only critique would be that it would be great to see them carry more "non-Specialized" bikes and supplies. Sorrry to downgrade, but I switched to another shop after I had a disappointing experience here with a bike repair on my Turner MTB. I think the intentions were good, but I was not happy with the final outcome. I brought my bike in for service due to poor shifting. The recommendation that I received was a new chain. So I went for it, but when I got my bike back it did not function as expected. It was particularly disappointing as upon stepping into the saddle, the bike slipped out of gear right away! It is obvious that the bike was not test ridden under pressure. It made for a frustrating ride in the Laguna mountains that day. When I returned the bike to the shop, they recommended a new cassette for the rear derailleur. Just wish they would have done a complete diagnosis in the first place and given a full picture from the start. It would have spared me two separate trips and much aggravation. read more

This review is purely about service. I broke a derailleur cable while out on a ride on a Tuesday morning. Limped into the UC Cyclery. The service guy was superb (older guy named Tom or John). He replaced the cable & checked my bike for any safety issues. He tightened my headset & cog cluster while explaining everything he was doing. Total cost: $19. Total time: about 10 minutes. After falling from my road bike, my derailleur hanger was bent. Went to blackmountain bicycle twice to fix it. They only used derailleur adjustment screw to "adjust" it. It seemed okay when i test ride in the parking lot. After that, shifting was all messed up. I had chain falling off chain ring a few times, derailleur caught with plastic pie plate. Finally, we brought my bike in to u c cyclery last weekend. The technician looked at the derailleur hanger and said it was bent. He charged us $15. We waited right there for 15 min and the bike was done. I just rode 20 miles today to Cabrillo monument and back. The derailleur shift smooth like new. It is the best $15 I have spent on the bike. My husband and I had several mountain bike tunings done with UC cyclery. We are always very satisfied with their service. read more

We went in last week to investigate buying our first road bikes. We aren't experts in this and really needed someone with the knowledge, patience and time to walk us through our options, the costs of different models, benefits/drawbacks of each, and match that to our goals and budget. Adam helped us and he was fantastic. He really listened and found us two road bikes that are perfect. All told he probably spent 3 hours with us -- and the time and attention was invaluable. The customer service I received here was truly fantastic! I recently decided that I would like to try road biking- having previously been a solely mountain bike person- and was referred to UCC. The salesman, Matt, spent four hours with me testing multiple bikes and answering every question I had, even going so far as to research the comparable bikes other brands offered and explain every difference and the benefits of each. With my bike choice completed, Matt and his coworker, Christina, helped me to find all of the gear that I needed (and some I just plain wanted) and Christina's input was so helpful, especially in finding the correct seat. Once I finally purchased my perfect bike the bike mechanic, Steve, started to adjust it, but after a moment he asked if I would like to learn about the bike and proceeded to go through and explain the care and maintenance each piece would require as well as the mechanics of it all. I was amazed and impressed that, despite the full store, he took the time to ensure that I felt comfortable with my bike and understood how to care for it. UCC staff and management are top notch. I recently brought my specialized TARMAC SL4 EXPERT road bike. This is my first true road bike. I've own bmx and a cheap mountain bike but nothing like specialized. Edwin and the Dave gave me great insight on my recent purchase literally found a sweet ride and a sweet deal, and the customer service was exemplary. I came in 5 mins to the store close and Edwin stayed and took care of me. They are so well stocked, it really is a one stop shop! After an hour they hooked me up with everything I needed; installing bottle cages, seat pack and dialed me into my shiny new bike by adjusting it to me - swapping out the pedals, seat, stem, inserted spacers for the brakes... Even gave me a quick demo on how to use Cycling shoe and engaging the pedal and disengaging. It took me more then ten mins to understand the concept but I can tell you now that I am a pro now thanks to him. I almost forgot I had to come back to get fitted on the account of being so late and the fitter wasn't there. I was promised a free fit when I went back. So today I got fitted and Bob Took the time to explain what he was doing and why he was doing it. I am supremely happy with my purchase and feel I got an excellent deal. When you are buying a bike for exercise or racing or like me, just to ride for fun several times a week for several hours at a time, nothing is smarter than getting a bike that fits you properly. Excellent service! I was just about to depart for a touring vacation on the No Cal coast and wanted to make sure that my bike was safe and in great running order. I had just had complete tune-up plus drive-train clean; safety check; adjust brakes front and rear , etc at a North San Diego County Coastal Bike Store. They additionally, replaced the bottom bracket, and replaced the derailleur cable. After taking it for a ride something didn't seem right. So I was near UC Cyclery on my ride and I stopped-in. I spoke to Steve one of the mechanics and even though he was obviously very busy he took the time that he probably didn't have to take a look a my bike. He seemed very surprised by the condition that the previous shop had released my bike in. The headset was not tightened. The bottom bracket was installed incorrectly with an the wrong spacer in the wrong position The new derailleur cable was installed in old housing which was pinching the cable and causing it to not work properly.. The rear cassette was wobbly because it was missing a spacer, etc. Steve didn't really have the time with his current demands to service my bike, but he took the time anyway knowing that I was under a time crunch. Serviced my bike correctly and most importantly made it safe. It is running beautifully. I can't say enough about the great service and the great treatment that I received from the UC Cycerky Steve and his colleague John. Thank you! read more
