Purchased a new road bike today (Specialized Aethos Pro). The staff was super helpful, knowledgeable and responsive. I worked with Trevor for several hours and his input was the best I've ever had from a bike shop person. He took his time informing me about the different Specialized models and builds, explaining everything in minute detail and he really knows his stuff. He was patient and attentive. For my test rides he took the time to precisely match my current fit (seat height & position, etc.) to make sure I could really check out the performance of the bike. The ease of ordering online is awesome! But when i called for an estimate for time of pick up, he told me at the end of the day. When i asked specifically what time, he said he couldn't give me a time and just said i could pick it up tomorrow. I told him i was asking what time so i can go biking. Overall this is a good business, but I want to warn people about the staff in repairs not keeping their faces covered during COVID. I don't know if they resent wearing masks, but they slip them down to the chin every 2 minutes and I hate standing there. I accept that I'm a coward for not saying something directly to them. If you are a coward like me, you'll be uncomfortable as well. These are fit men in their 20s; if they have trouble breathing through a layer of cloth, they really should see their doctor. I'm 61 and ride my bike every day masked, so I think if I can do that, they could stand in the shop and keep mouth and nose covered. With that out of the way, the shop is wonderful. They are well staffed, know what they are doing, have always done good work. They are not inexpensive, ever, but this is La Jolla so you knew that. I have had an amazing experience working with UC Cyclery. Not all bike shops are created equal and everything about this store is heads and shoulders above every other bike shop (and any retailer basically) I have been to in San Diego. From their outstanding selection of bicycles, regular bikes to Electric, their knowledge of the product and especially their customer service have all been fantastic. I have worked closely with Nicco and Lorenza and I have to say they they have been so easy to work with. They have given me nothing but good old fashion white glove 5 star service and it's truly been a pleasure getting to know them and yes spending my money on their awesome stuff. I recently bought a super awesome Ebike from them and they have painstakingly and patiently gotten my bike dialed in to perfection. If you ever need a bike I highly recommend this place as your one stop shop for advice, service, parts, the bike, etc. I went in one day to ask for recommendations and Rudy helped me find a bike that was exactly what I was looking for. Well I have wanted a bike for my wife for long time and had been shopping for 7 months across numerous stores and online. I had visited this store a few times and always had a great experience. Then one day I was in area and went in again. This time Dave helped me. He walked me through numerous bikes and I finally chose one for my wife. Now I thought I had chosen correctly, but I bought a 29 inch bike. Brought it home and it was to big :(. My mistake. I contacted shop and explained my mistake. I had them change out my crank a couple weeks ago (did a great job btw) but my gears have been jumping ever since. So I was so annoyed out on a ride that I just swung by and talked to the mechanic thinking they hadn't adjusted my dérailleur correctly. Well it was TOTALLY my fault because I'd let the chain get so worn out. Steve explained it to me that in really clear terms and even pointed out some things I'd been totally neglecting on my bike. Even some things that prolly weren't even safe to be riding on. Anyway, just telling you my most recent story of how these guys are the best. I've worked at a bike shop before in GA and I wish every shop were like this one. Great customer service and felt that I was wanted in the store rather than a nuisance. I really wanted to give them my money but they did not have the item I wanted in stock. I went to a different bike shop that had the pedals in stock (I was hesitant to go there since I didn't feel valued there) and then came back to UC Cyclery with the intention to buy cleats for the pedals but a worker told me it was already included. Went to look at gear. They had a small selection of woman's clothes. The staff was friendly but were not involved as most bike shops are. They did have a ton of bikes for all types of biking. Came in for a tube replacement because mine kept popping. Had a few issues with the job they did: 1. Changed the height of my bike seat without warning 2. Took my presta air pump adapter which I use as a cap 3. Missing valve nut on one of the tubes 4. No stem caps 5. Different stem sizes for some reason 6. Very underfilled tires (I get that I should be filling them as well, but they have the tool right there) 7. Completely misaligned the brakes and derailer when they put the wheels back on the bike Overall, it just seems like the person didn't put any effort into the change and at $30-35 for the change, I'd expect at least the basics to be covered. read more

I rarely take my bike into the shop for repairs or adjustments since I can do most repairs myself, but when I do I expect it to be done right. I took my bike in for a front and rear derailleur adjustment and mentioned to the guy in the service department that my left crank arm wasn't fully tightened to spec. He said they'd check over the whole bike during service so I was pretty confident that they'd check the torque on the crank arm bolts. After I dropped off my bike I got a text message a few hours later saying that my bike was ready for pickup. I was pleasantly surprised because I wasn't expecting to have it back until the following day. Well, once I brought my bike home I checked the crank arm bolts and not only were they not tightened at all but I also discovered that the rear derailleur wasn't adjusted properly after taking my bike for a short ride. I did, however, get a cute note on my receipt (in all caps) that read "CRANKS ARE NOT TIGHT LIKE A TIGER." That seems to be code for "we don't want you back as a customer" because I won't be back there ever again. read more
