I have been to Uchi several times and it never disappoints. From the fun and cool atmosphere to the excellent food it always hits. Service was great and I like that all the servers help each other out so there is always someone to get you what you need when you need it. We went during happy hour (which I highly recommend as they have some of their most popular items for great prices) and got some off the main menu as well. Had a great experience at Uchi once again! I took a friend here for their birthday, and even though it took a little longer than usual for our waiter to check on us (it was a busy Friday night), everything else was excellent and we didn't mind. They surprised us with a nice complimentary birthday treat, which was such a thoughtful touch. Highlights for me are still the Hamachi Chili, scallops, and fried milk--absolutely amazing! The shishito peppers were tasty too, just a bit salty toward the bottom, but it really depends on what drink you pair with it (probably perfect with sake). My husband and I are completely blown out of the water from uchi's service and food!!! We haven't tried uchi for a while since we were pretty loyal to a different sushi spot but this place especially at happy hour changed the game!! Uchi's 9 course $120 for 2 omakase is great value and variety. We added some a la carte on top of this and were full after. Absolutely loved everything we had and the servers enhanced the experience 1000%. From how you eat the course to how sweet they were - we loved the experience from servers and the food itself. We went to Uchi in a few weeks ago, this place was pricey, so while the food was good, it probably was a bit overpriced. Food: We had 8 different items I will rank them from best to worst, based on flavor. 1. A5 Wagyu Hot Rock This was by far the best, it's raw and you cook it on the rock. We tried about 30 seconds per side. The only downside was there is ALOT of smoke that comes off, so sit upwind of it. The meat was super tender and i've found that A5 is rich enough that you actually dont want an entire 16 oz of it, otherwise you'll feel too full. Its essentially meat butter and this balanced out richness and portion well. 2. Scallop This was a warm scallop seared and served in a sort of corn paste. I liked that it wasn't just another beef fat scallop and they clearly tried to pair it with a different form of savory flavor. The corn is not very sweet or creamy, so it sort of blankets the scallop in flavor, with a smooth scallop cut. 3. Hama Chili This one was served in a spicy jalapeño sauce with fresh oranges, which helped balance out the sauce. It wasn't a gradual build sauce, but more of a one punch pierce flavor. The fish was very tender, and not overpowering, the real star of this dish is the sauce and fruit. 4. Oysters The oysters were certainly good, but nothing overly fancy. It is a large oyster, but they were around $12 each, would probably pass on these next time. 5. Gyutoro (steak sashimi) This is essentially the cooked version of the A5 hot rock, the steak is a little bigger and lower fatty content. It's hot and doesnt bind super well with the rice, so it just felt odd to eat, not an amazingly creative concept. 6. Nigiri Very standard for nigiri, but would NOT recommend the amberjack, as it was very fishy tasting. The tuna chutoro and otoro were quite good, melt in the mouth with fat. 7. Pork Belly We liked this dish, but since it came out last, we were a bit full. It wasn't too fatty or too dry like alot of pork belly at restaraunts is. The garnish on top was a turnip, I believe, which didnt add alot to the dish. 8. Crunch Tuna Roll We probably shouldnt have ordered this. It was fine, but very bland. The sauce was a weird rioux style flavor, which I didn't think meshed well with the roll. The tuna wasn't anything amazing, the nigiri was much better. Desserts: Fried Milk This was like a fried ball of leche milk, where you bite into it and it explodes out. Very rich and creamy, but not too sweet or thick. The chocolate on top was very nice as well and we liked the hot/cold style of the ice cream. Banana Cake This was more banana bread style with vanilla ice cream and some granola crumbles. Very good for those that want a dessert that isnt just some chocolate/caramel sugar explosion. The bread was sweet but not too dense, and the ice cream picked up granola crumbles well. Service: Our server was excellent, and was able to guide us on portions and timing. We never had a moment where we had too many plates or were waiting on plates. She even talked us down from two scallops to one, saying it was big enough that we could easily share- and she was right. I really appreciated that she wasn't upselling and she clearly knew the menu well enough to give some good pointers such as the Hama Chili also. Ambiance: This is a somewhat odd ambiance because it is more of a upscale restaurant on the inside with an omakase bar up front. We ate at a table, but the bar looked very crowded, so we were happy with the space. I would say that it wasn't too loud or too quiet, definitely standard ambient noise. Uchi honestly sets the bar high when it comes to the sushi scene in Houston. The food is always high quality, the ambiance is perfect for a nice date night or happy hour at the bar, and the service is second to none. I've been here numerous times and I feel bad that I'm just now writing a review for here. My most recent visit was strictly for their happy hour menu at the bar. Our favorites are their hama chili, sake crudo, madai crudo, gyutoro gunkan, kushiyaki, sake nigiri, and kurodai nigiri. Regardless of what you order though, I've never had a single bad bite of food here. For cocktails, my favorite is the Kara Kyuri, super refreshing with just the right amount of citrus. Overall, Uchi remains a staple when it comes to sushi in Houston. There might be many newcomers to the sushi scene in Houston, but there's a reason why Uchi has been here for so long. I'd say the only slight downside to coming here is parking. There's "complimentary" valet, but you still end up having to give them a tip. The hype is REAL. I've been dying to try this place. I got a voucher at the Rodeo best bites competition so it was perfect timing. I came solo on a Thursday (I'm here rn lol) right after work and sat at the sushi counter. I would love to do the happy hour omakase sometime but since I was solo I didn't go for it. Koy was my sushi chef and ?Hudson I believe was my waiter. I was given a complimentary first bite of a yummy pineapple and tamarind sorbet. I then started with the Hama chili and that was definitely the highlight. The salty topping was a perfect accompaniment to the dish. I continued on to the nasu grilled eggplant. Creamy and delicious! It sat on a bed of rice as it was nigiri. I was between getting the brisket and the grilled wagyu sausage. I ended up going for the brisket but Koy was so kind to also send me a complimentary sausage. The sausage was a bit salty for my palate but very moist and flavorful. The brisket just melted away in my mouth and reminded me of the bite I tried at the rodeo. The sauce for the brisket didn't add much for me. Next up o tried the lobster maki. While not on the HH menu it was a daily special so I gave it a try. It was unfortunately my least favorite dish. It tasted a bit fishy like the oil it was fried it was old. I still had the stomach for one more bite so the suggestion of my chef I went for the salmon crudo (kanojo crudo). It was a lovely light ending to my meal. And then I was surprised with a dessert treat! Awesome! I don't think they serve regular cocktails as they have a flyer stating full bar coming in June and the HH drink menu only has sake, beer and wine but I didn't confirm. The bathrooms were clean and accessible service was swift. Uchi is one of those OG Houston spots I'd always heard amazing things about, but somehow never made it to--despite trying plenty of other sushi places. So when my friend came into town and it happened to be her birthday, I knew this was the perfect excuse to finally check it out. We sat at the sushi bar and did the HH Omakase for two, and it was honestly a 10/10 experience. The service was incredible--our servers were warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the food. You could tell they take pride in what they do. To make the evening even more special, they brought out caviar for her birthday, which was such a fun surprise. It was actually both of our first times trying it--and it was delicious! We had a couple of cocktails (pictured), and I also included a screenshot of all the small courses we tried because, as anyone who's done omakase knows... it's a lot! Every bite was fresh, balanced, and beautifully crafted. We even got a few surprise extras from the kitchen that made us feel like VIPs. We had our reservation for 4:30 on a Saturday, and the place was quite full--not surprising since it's an OG spot. My friend and I had a reservation for Saturday evening. They have complimentary valet parking across the street. I would definitely recommend making a reservation because it is a smaller space. The restaurant itself is small, dimly lit, and very pretty. & The restrooms are impeccably clean. My only complaint about the experience was how inattentive our waitress was. We were sat between two other tables who had different waitresses and they kept checking up on their tables. Meanwhile ours only came to take our orders and give us the check. Which is kind of frustrating, if you want to keep ordering things. Thankfully we ordered most of what we wanted at the beginning. However, as we saw other tables get interesting dishes we wanted to add on to our order, but couldn't because our waitress was no where to be found. I will also note that the rolls took a long time to come out. From placing our order I think we waited almost 30 minutes for the last one. Beyond that, the food is SPECTACULAR. We started off with the Uchi salad which we loved. It has a jalapeño mouse that is slightly sweet and spicy, and the rice added a nice crunch. The karaage sauce was tangy and delicious. As far as rolls we ordered the lobster maki which was very good and the ringo roll which was also delicious. We also ordered yellowtail, salmon, mackerel, and salmon belly nigiri. Uchi is a must visit spot for sushi lovers! I recently went to enjoy the happy hour solo at the sushi bar and it could not have been a more lovely experience. Happy hour prices are great to try many different dishes. I also really appreciated the amazing service from everyone at this establishment. As I walked to uchi to avoid parking hassles, I came in a little hot and sweaty and was immediately given a small scoop of lemon sorbet when I sat down. I'm not an ice cream person but wow this was really refreshing and helped cool me down from the Houston heat! I love to enjoy the various cool tastings from the happy hour menu and a few other bites. It was midweek and there was a little bit of a wait despite reservations. However, there's a staff member that offered pickled tomato samples to guests. I found it interesting but very flavorful and something I've never experienced. Once seated our waiter immediately took our order for food and drinks. I don't recall the names of everything but to start off with drinks I had a sake based one called the Tokyo 75, well balanced flavor and different from what I normally get. For sushi what I remembered most was the hot rock that you cook the beef on, very delicious. Everything else was amazing and having fresh fish sushi is an experience. I would gladly go back. A true all around winner. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would. Not only is the sushi delicious and fresh but what blows me away every time is just the pairing of flavors and the pure gastronomy. Get alllll the rolls people they are just delicious and so well done. One of the few sushi places where I could get lost (and my wallet will also get lost) in the hot and cold tastings over the sushi itself. For dessert, I get the fried milk every time and I've never regretted it. Very similar to its sister milk and cereal at uchiko. Service deserves its own paragraph. Even on a busy Friday evening the bar servers clocked us coming to them while we waited for our table to be ready and took our order right away. Drinks came out so fast I was taken aback. Chef Santos was okay (seemed like he didn't really want to be working the evening), Nora and the rest of the Uchi team took really great care of us. +They supposedly purvey seafood from the infamous Tsukiji 2.0, Toyosu Fish Market. -None of the sushi chefs washed their hands after certain handling techniques, which is concerning but most may not even be aware because it's so busy. Where's the hand wash station, Mr. Ellen G-san? -The chefs go right into making sushi/nigiri/sashimi right after touching their pens/notepads. Again, not a big deal but it all adds up when you see some touching their facial hair or wiping an itch/perspiration off their brows and then immediately handling raw fish, rice, etc. I guess the citrus zest masks the salty sweat? Lol. -Some of the scallops were definitely on their way to going bad. Trimethylamine (TMA) was definitely setting in for some of the nigiri pieces we ordered. The black sea bream was very good as long as you didn't use the Ponzou sauce. The Uni from Japan was not great, did not seem fresh, most likely frozen. The Uni from Santa Barbara was much better. By that I mean, you pay expensive prices and get exquisite small portions that are more about the experience than about getting full. I'll start off with - I see the hype. There really is a difference of QUALITY vs QUANTITY. Now I love sushi, I post reviews for all restaurants ranging from AYCE, la carte, to fine dining but I will say, this beats all of them so far. We came in on a Tuesday night and it was pretty busy. Starting off with the ambiance, I love the dim lights and the open kitchen concept where you can see everything in and out of the kitchen. The place is very clean, and organized. I'll add that the bathroom was really clean too (cause I do check that out especially for these type of restaurants). The staff was EXTREMELY kind and knowledgeable. Uchi is known to really give extensive trainings to their staff so they are well versed and it really shows. Each time a dish is presented to the table, they will explain what it is so it's nice especially if you're not used to the technical sushi terms. They help each other, tables are bussed out efficiently, and the ambiance all around is very cozy. Food: 12/10. Everything just melts in your mouth or it's dancing. The ingredients are all fresh, and added perfectly where it's not too overwhelming. I had someone take 'lead' on what to order so I can't list out ALL I ate but the few things I would recommend is the: -blue fin platter (I love fatty so otoro was AMAZING) -a5 wagyu (it melts in your mouth) -Hama chili -akami nashi -fried milk (dessert) - please get it. Even if you're full, just do it. If all things fail, just try the Somakase cause the servers KNOWS the menu and will give you the same experience I just had. Everything was delicious, yet again, and the drinks were great-we asked our server, John, to bring out different sakes that he thought were interesting and he didn't disappoint! We ordered the omakase for two again, and although the pieces didn't seem quite as show stopping as they did last year, we still left very full and very satisfied! I didn't write down all of the pieces that we were served this year, but I did take pics of everything we got. Fatty tuna and flounder were standouts for me. Came back after like 2 years so I figured it deserves an updated review. Uchi gets a lot of hype, I can see why for those who eat fish. They have a decent vegetarian menu but Uchi is not my first choice in Houston for vegetarian sushi. Made reservations day of and Uchi didn't have any availability on their website but when I went to Uchiko I was able to make reservations for Uchi. That was kinda weird. Regardless we got seats at the sushi bar which was honestly really cool to watch. Yoshi was wonderful! He even gave us another vegetarian roll to try and it was really good especially the creamy sauce it came with. We got our usual pitchfork and nasu nigiri. I also got a lychee martini which was so yum. We also got small sorbets before our meal as a palate cleanser which was really good. Sitting at the sushi bar made service and food so quick. We were out within 40 minutes. Food was 10/10. read more

This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants! My partner and I went here for our anniversary dinner and had the omakase. From the moment we walked in, the staff was sooo friendly and greeted us with a "happy anniversary" every chance they had! After hearing about Uchi for so many months of being in Houston, I finally had the opportunity to try it with a few of my colleagues. WOW is the one word that comes to mind when I describe the experience. Complementary parking is available across the street and is very convenient. Once I arrived, they did request that I wait until my entire party was also there before before we could be seated, but they did offer that I could sit at the bar or on the patio, where I could also get service. Once people arrived, we were seated quickly, and they waitress came over to take our drink order. We started with a bottle of sparkling rosé, and it was absolutely delicious. We started with Shishito peppers and an order of the edamame ... both fantastic. I do not like spice so I loved that the edamame was really just salty. Once we finished the appetizers, we decided to move onto a bottle of red wine as well as order mains. At our table, one did the vegetarian tasting menu, two did the Omikase experience and I ordered the sashimi platter. I was able to specifically select the fish on my platter and picked flounder, Aji, tuna and yellowtail. The fish was some of the best I've ever had. My colleagues felt that their experience was a bit, rushed as plate after plate started to build up because of the speed at which we are being served however, the food itself was thoroughly enjoyed . For dessert, we did the fried milk and it was incredible as well. I like that this place is casual yet. Upscale and service was great. I will absolutely be back. read more

Just celebrated a friend's birthday here. There's a reason why uchi is always so busy. Service, food, ambiance, they've got it all. So many people celebrate big occasions here, there's a reason why! We had the walu walu, karaage, Hama chili, engawa, salmon belly, otoro, hamachi and mushroom nigiri. The fish is fresh, no fishy taste--reminds me of sushi in Japan. My personal favorites were the nigiri we had aaaand... FRIED MILK!!!!!! The fried milk is the stuff of dreams. The first time I had it, I couldn't stop thinking about it. The perfectly fried balls of milk, the caramel, chocolate and graham cracker pieces makes it a perfect dessert. The fried milk would absolutely be part of my last meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinging experience at Uchi. Our server was wonderful, asked our preference, but took the lead in selecting our meal for us. He only steered me wrong once; now I know that I hate uni and will never be trying it again. Everything else in the meal was fantastic. I tried very hard to take note of everything we tried, unfortunately the waitress who brought us most of the dishes spoke so quickly and mumbled a lot that it was hard to understand. Here were the highlights: Flounder Octopus, Japanese sea ring, Salmon, A5 wagu hot rock, Saki kiwi salmon, Flounder/smoky, Yellowtail nigiri, Wagyu Tartare (A MUST TRY!), 72 hour Australian wagyu, Yellowtail sashimi, Tuna plate (torched otoro), Lobster tempura roll, Bluefin tuna sashimi, Uni (yuck!), Blue crab, and to finish off the meal Fried Milk Balls and Strawberry Olive Oil Cake. Rating: 3.5 stars I came with a group of five people on a Saturday night around 5 PM for dinner. Because we had made reservations before hand we were taken to our seats in a booth area right away. We settled for the omakase which meant they just keep bringing out different dishes for you to try. They give you a good collection of items to try out. Quality of the fish and seafood was very good. Some dishes were misses and had questionable combinations but there were some that were surprisingly nice. I enjoyed their simple makis rolls. Pretty good fusion restaurant. read more

This is my first time dining at Uchi and the experience is not good at all. We made reservation at 7pm, got there at 650pm and waited total 20' to seated. The food is mehhh, nothing special at all. I have better food at other restaurants. We ordered Gyutoro and the beef is chewy with no flavor. I have got better beef at HEB tbh. read more

Best sushi in Houston! The chefs are so talented and very friendly. I love all the choices the chef gave for omakase, but if you sit at the bar be careful--they kept feeding us just because we said we weren't full and the bill was crazy! But it was so yummy so no regrets ‍ The fried milk really surprised me, I'm not a deserts type person usually but it was so unique and delicious.
