Ugh, kills me to give them 3 stars, considered just 2 stars for tonight's service but usually they're pretty good. We arrived for our 6 pm outdoor reservation and waited 30 mins. During those 30 mins they twice brought us drinks that weren't ours by mistake; and then took them to the right table. They said our table was still eating and would be likely another 20-30 minutes, so instead offered us a table inside. They said they'd comp our first drinks and bring us some appetizers/bites on the house. Our waitress was not someone we had seen before - Uchiko's servers are usually exceptional (their amazing customer service is a big part of the experience!), but our server tonight seemed rushed the entire night. She'd be at our table taking our order while looking at another table, or she'd just abruptly walk off when we still had questions, etc. We disliked one dish and she threw the chef under the bus a bit and said the chef was defensive on the dish and figured if she got enough people to complain about it, he'd be willing to listen. They decided to honor sake social hour for us since they were so delayed in seating us, but the server said we needed to put our drink orders in immediately - those could not wait. We asked if we wanted more than one, would we need to order them all at once and she said something like "uh yeah the bar won't make them for you later, needs to be now"...so we each had a couple drinks sitting in front of us from the start. So odd. The ko salad which is usually a fave was unusually small - like half its usual size. And the edamame was soggy. Tasted over-boiled and not charred or crisp like usual. When the check came, they did not comp any of the beverages as they said, and they did not bring by/cover any appetizers or food. Overall pretty poor experience, which is a bummer as that's usually not the case. read more

Closer to 3.5 stars. Had reservations with my boyfriend later in the evening on a weekend, celebrating our anniversary. Ordered quite a few items, some of our favorite dishes of the evening were the tiger cry roll, unagi nigiri, and waygu nigiri. The tiger cry roll was laid over a flavorful sauce and the wagyu melted in our mouths. However, the other dishes did not wow us. The server was nice, but a tad bit slow. I was hoping the overall experience would be redeemed with a delicious dessert; I was wrong. I ordered a dessert and the server informed us that they were out of their two most popular dessert dishes (milk and cereal and banana cake). This was my first time dining at a place that did not recognize a celebration that was listed on the reservation. Overall, I was disappointed from my experience. Ok so this is the best sushi I've had in all of Austin... maybe anywhere. They have high quality ingredients and really creative recipes that I haven't seen elsewhere. My fiancé and I go here every time we want to celebrate something. Most recently, we went here for Valentine's Day. We're talking about going when I pass my PhD quals in a couple months. The pictures are all from the special Valentine's Day menu. They also have an awesome happy hour menu if you're on a budget and the food on that menu is just as good! Exquisite !! The review could simply start and end here and it would do full justice to this wonderful place. Having traveled the world and lived in many cities we are always surprised by how amazing the city we now call home is. I never thought I would stop missing NYC but Austin never ceases to surprise. We had recently been here for my birthday and absolutely loved everything we ate here. Our favorites were the bluefin otoro aburi, kanpachi, hama chili and the banana cake. Besides the food the designer in me found many things to appreciate about the decor ... I simply loved the artwork, the lighting, and many thoughtful details like the metal QR code and the place to hold the bill under the table. Kudos for seeing eating as an immersive & experiential activity and elevating this experience for us on my special day. I am sure though many reviews must be pointing out all of the above things ... so let me get to what compelled me to write this rare review. I am in awe of the vegetarian selection I found here and wanted to mention that this place wins hands down in this realm. Let me be clear ... I love sushi but whenever I think of sushi vegetables fade way back in my mind and I don't even make an effort to try anything vegetarian in the menu except for agedashi tofu & a rare tempura fix. I grew up around the coast and hence have an innate love for all things seafood. Most times I stick to the tried and tested fish selection. Seeing a separate vegetarian menu piked my curiosity, we went out of our way to try their vegetarian selections to check if these were any good as I had never tried a vegetarian nigiri before. I must say both the nasu and kinoko did not disappoint. And the kinoko usuzukuri was simply delicious. I don't think I would have ever imagined mushrooms to be at par with my beloved fish but uchiko seems to have converted me into breaking my comfort zone and venture outside the usual seeking the unexpected. Lastly the service was spot on, we would like to thank David who made our time here really special. He was extremely courteous, patient and made suggestions per our food preferences. I can't believe it took me so long to try Uchiko. I tend to avoid high end or over hyped venues, but in this case .. Uchiko is the real deal. Food, service, ambiance, all great. Crowded? Yes! Must make a reservation. Expensive? Surprisingly not crazy. Order from the happy hour -- lots of options. Regular menu has larger portions. I love ordering a few dishes at a time...and keep them coming. Favorite was anything with salmon and tuna...creamy bites of clouds! But everything was perfection. First time here - visiting from chicago and decided to come out here to try texas sushi ... haha honestly we didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised that they offered omakase and for only 110 per person we immediately jumped on that. So having tried many other omakase the biggest difference is that this is a fusion place so have to tamper the expectations than your traditional fish only omakase but still fusion can be good: Oyster- pretty good nice strawberry filling -4x pieces for two people Scallop and snow crab - scallop melting , snow crab was a bit salty maybe a diff pairing Amberjack - great , good sour sauce Curry - very different spicy but good Soft shell crab - was ok I would prefer just the whole thing by itself and not in a sushi form Akami- lean tuna -6pieces !!! Really good Venison - medium but sear outside O toro and chuturo- one each very good except the wasabi on top was a lil sweet and would prefer alone Short rib - great surprise , a bit salty on the outside but nonetheless great sear and finish Carrot cake dessert - good solid finish So in sum, pros would be the serving size , usually you don't get full from omakase but here you actually get full especially with two meat dishes and a healthy sushi roll in between. Cons or opportunities for improvement would be the tweets as discussed above, no need to over add things and let the fish speak for itself. Oh my goodness, this restaurant beyond lives up to the hype. The best part of the experience was our waitress, Elizabeth. I totally understand fine dining servers have a certain standard to meet in general, but holy wow was Elizabeth above and beyond any expectations. She was so warm, so friendly, and so knowledgeable. She could intimately describe every ingredient and aspect of the menu. It was our first time dining here, and I'm a strict vegetarian, but she made sure I had full knowledge of the vegetarian menu and that I wouldn't leave hungry. My fiancé and I ended up ordering a little more than we could eat, and she very smartly predicted that and didn't "put in" everything we ordered so once we were full, we could easily cancel the rest of our food. Elizabeth is an absolute gem of this establishment and I wish she could be our server everywhere we go. I would listen to her describe food ingredients at any restaurant in the world. Food wise, just absolutely 10/10. Nothing was bad. Everything was worth it. Just get whatever and you can't go wrong. Never been to Uchiko before, this was a first for my wife and myself. I have my spot picked out for sushi so it's very hard to try and try something new. Given this is right when things are "trying" to get back to normal the restaurant was at full capacity, thankfully we had a small booth so it made it a little more comfortable given Covid is still a thing. The greeting staff was nice and we didn't have to wait very long for our table. The wait staff was attentive to our dietary restrictions however not sure that made it to the kitchen cause we ended up with one of the items we asked not to be a part of the chefs tasting menu. Overall the sushi was great and comparable to my normal sushi restaurant, the other tasting dishes were great given this is a fusion type sushi restaurant so I was impressed. I'd say if you can try to go on an off peak time to get better wait service however given they were short staffed I can't fault them too much. Overall would highly recommend. read more

Perfect for date nights, girls nights, or solo dining! My server was Tyler, and my sushi chef was Jean! Both of them took very good care of me - thank you so much! I visited during happy hour, so I ordered a bunch of items from that menu, and then some: - Murasakino cocktail: blueberry, lemongrass sake, and makgrut - refreshing, on the sweeter side, very pretty pink! - Nigiri (2pc each): sake, bluefin tuna - I wish the HH portions were just one nigiri each, but these were quite delicious! - Nigiri (1pc each): kinmedai, shima aji - two of my favorite fish! My first visit to Uchi was the end of Jan of 2021 when I came down to visit a wonderful woman. We decided to frequent a few restaurants that evening so we limited our culinary adventure to appetizers. As for beverages I opted for the smith tea "dragonwell". It was extremely flavorful and smooth. I ordered a bottle of the yukikage sake and while my date didn't like it, I loved it. Heady yet I could really taste the green apple and apricot flavors. It went perfectly with all fascists of the meal to come. Our experience started with mushrooms. They were flavorful but not much texture. However being an appetizer I wasn't that concerned. Next the staff gave us fried brussle sprouts no charge. WOWZA were they good. Crunchy, not burnt, flavorful, buttery and best of all it didn't give the bad "burps" that often can accompany members of the cruciferous family. For rolls, first we tried the wagu roll. The beef was flavorful and cooked to perfection however I didn't care for the lettuce that was in it. Moreover I don't like chewing sushi a lot. I don't want to down on this experience as it's more personal preference than execution on the facilities part. The other roll we sampled was the Kanpachi. The amberjack was flavorful, buttery and flawless while the tamari was a great choice as the fermentation tasted a bit amped up. Think of soy sauce on steroids. Wonderful! The ambiance of Uchiko was top notch. Lots of activity, a lively bar and lots of smiling happy people. The front of the house knew their menu & all their suggestions were spot on. I came to Uchiko with high expectations, but was left disappointed. I should've listened to my family's Japanese friends when they claimed that Uchiko was too expensive and gave too little. Back to Musashino I go. I had the ten course omakase along with my companion. Why was everything sweet, sour, or salty? I eat sushi so that I can eat fish. Not glorified condiments. The entrees were probably the best part of the omakase, but they were still too salty. The miso soup, and the skitake mushroom soup were both way too salty. The fish, with the exception of the sea bass sashimi, all tasted sweet and sour. A burden to the natural flavor of the fish. The oysters also tasted too strongly of salt and sweet/sour sauce. Much to the future dismay of my partner, I gave the rest of my share of oysters to my partner. My partner got a stomachache from the oysters. A quick Google search led us to the discovery that it's not oyster season right now. The oysters we received were likely not fresh. Maybe some old stock for them to get rid of. Despite spending ~$250 on our ten course omakase, we were still hungry. We got some Maki rolls right before dessert. My Maki roll wasn't bad, but whoever made the rolls was sorely lacking in skill. One roll was as big as a nickel, while another one was the size of a gold coin. The esthetics of the roll failed the quality control test. The only upside to Uchiko was the service. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive. He never let our water glasses drop below a quarter, and explained what we should expect in detail. But he made a bogus claim telling us that some of the fish came from the famous fish market from Tokyo. I smelt bullshit: By the time fish gets shipped from thousands of miles away at Japan, it most likely will go bad. But I still foolishly gave Uchiko the benefit of the doubt. To all the people waiting in line for Uchiko: Go to Musashino. No one serves better sushi than a legit Japanese sushi chef. read more

This place is truly as good as it gets! It is at the same level as Uchi and it is just one of my favorite spots. Every time I have been here I have been greeted with smiles and treated very well. No matter how packed the restaurant is the food always comes out quickly. I would recommend getting the Milk and Cookies for your dessert as it is very delightful and I would recommend ordering anything from the specials menu as those will also blow your mind. PSA: Make sure to make reservations in advance! This place gets full pretty quick not as far in advance as Uchi but still plan ahead! read more

Top Chef Winner, Chef Paul Qui used to be a chef here. As it is also on Yelp's Top 100 list, getting a reservation can be tough. Now, with 1500+ reviews and 4.5 stars rating on Yelp, would you blame me if my expectations were up there? A modern and chic environs with dim lighting made me feel like I was dining somewhere trendy in NYC, SF, or LA. You can tell from the crowd that this place was upscale for Austin and our party was the only minority. Then I realized, Asian cuisine is limited in this town so their standard for a good one may not be like mine coming from SoCal where the competition for authentic Japanese food is beyond compare. Having gotten the Signature Tasting Omakase which featured 5 courses of their signature dishes, you'd think you'd be floored. The Kanpachi Crudo looked beautiful but left something to be desired on the taste department. The Komaki sushi roll was my least favorite and not only because it was vegetarian, it was mushy in texture. I got psyched over the Madai (Japanese bream) and the additional Salmon sushi we ordered but the portion was too small as if it was just to tickle your palate. From the hot tasting, the Take Nabe was a hot pot of Japanese mushrooms, farm egg, rice, plus an added shreds of short rib for extra $6 - salty yet delicious. More rice would've fixed this. I also thought their Ebi sushi roll was forgettable. In all of this, the good that came out was my cucumber sake with ginger beer and basil cocktail called Atsui Senshi. Loved the Gyutoro which was a 72-hour Wagyu short rib that I wouldn't have minded eating all night. The dessert of Milk 'n Cereal was also something we all enjoyed. As for service? I have dined at Uchi many times and I cannot believe I had been sleeping on Uchiko. It was delicious and we enjoyed ourselves at happy hour. I cannot stress to you how important it is to get reservations, this place stays packed! They really do have a good happy hour with ample food options which can be rare as most places are more drink favorable. We started with the murasakino but it was a tad too sweet, so we switched to sake juice box and takara nigori where we thoroughly enjoyed several bottles! We feasted on the avocado, bincho, bluefin akami, gyudon(short rib), sake maki, bluefin crudo, sake crudo, kabocha tempura, fried chicken, P38 and crunchy tuna rolls. Every single was so delicious! The surprise of the evening was the kabocha tempura! Of course we couldn't leave without trying dessert. We chose the milk and cereal and the banana cake. I am usually not a fan of desserts at asian establishments, but I know the Uchi brand employs top pastry chefs and OMG...I could stop here for dessert every single week if I wasn't afraid of gaining weight. read more

What's not to love about Uchiko? It's the sister restaurant of Uchi, but I honestly prefer Uchiko. They make wonderful sake cocktails and have an excellent selection of wines. You can't go wrong with anything on the food menu. I have always had great experiences with the waitstaff and they are very willing to work with you on allergies. You can usually see the owner, Chef Tyson Cole making his way through the beautiful restaurant, checking on guests and... whatever other magical things he does to create a 5-star dining experience. My boyfriend was so excited to try out this place. I knew it was fancy, but I didn't expect the service to be so awesome! We were greeted and seated immediately, and our waitress was so attentive and kind, I felt like I was talking to a friend. After we ordered, I felt like I was a celebrity because if my water was never empty and the table was quickly wiped when there was a crumb or slight spill. The waiters and waitresses were always so elegant when they serve the dish and were all very knowledgable about the dishes. I was impressed. The food was so fun! Nothing was predictable despite seeing the description of the ingredients. The flavor was always a pleasant surprise. My favorite was the salmon sashimi. I forgot what they added to it, but the flavor mixed in with the texture was amazing because it all melts in your mouth! There were some dishes that had weird textures despite the good flavor, so it wasn't as comfortable to eat. Overall everything was pretty tasty though. For dessert we ordered the milk and cereal and it was one of the most unique desserts I've ever tried! I didn't think I would enjoy fried milk, but somehow they made it tasty. Last stop on our Austin tour was uchiko! Since it was our last night we decided to go all out with the chefs tasting. What's awesome is before you continue they asked about any allergies, anything you don't like, and if you would prefer more raw or more cooked (it's normally 50/50). We are pretty adventurous and we mentioned sea urchin as a big no for us! And they proceeded. We ordered sake cocktails which were great! It's so many dishes it was hard to keep track of so I will include as much info as possible, Our favorites were def the bigeye tuna nigiri, grilled squid with green curry, snow crab, hana-cauliflower with a Gruyere foam, and banana bread. Everything was amazing and so fresh but those really stood out. We were there because we had got engaged in Austin 2 yrs ago to the date! Definitely another overrated Uchi brand restaurant. The hosts at the front were less than helpful. Before stopping over for late night drinks, checked to see if they had availability...showed tables available for every imaginable time after 10pm. Showed up and they said they were fully booked. Went on Google and booked a table for 10:30...and waited 15 minutes to be seated. Even though there were 3 empty tables while we waited. I asked if we could sit at one of them to which they replied, they were for reservations. All 3 tables stayed empty the entire rest of the night. Bought a bottle of overpriced underflavored sake...awful experience. read more

I came here for a private dinner in one of their private dining rooms and it was minimum $100/pp for their omasake (let the chef choose) menu. I love the concept of omasake because I am a very easy eater and I trust the chef to pick what they think is best. This was my first Japanese omasake experience and I hope it will not be the last. The room was freezing cold and was still freezing even after I asked them to turn the heat up. The private dining room is separated from the next private dining room by a curtain so you could still hear conversation going on in the next room. Each food item that was brought out was meant to be shared by two people. So each plate had around 2-4 bites per person. Our menu consisted of the following foods: -oyster with basil, green tomato and jalapeno. This was so fresh and tasty -madai sashimi with shisho -snow crab and scallop nigiri (the snow crab was my favorite dish of the night because it had a buttery, caramel flavor to it) -king crab corn chowder with uni and kim chi. This dish was very rich, creamy and unique -hirame crudo (fluke) -rabbit sausage with turnip -striped jack and amberjack nigiri -bluefin akami sashimi -pork belly with turnip -grapefruit with aloe vera foam and olive oil -granita dessert that was complimentary -banana bread with coffee gelato The desserts were so light, refreshing and unique. I loved all three of them and think the grapefruit was my favorite. I loved the texture of the foam and the bitterness and sweetness of the grapefruit. I didn't like how there were large lulls between each dish that was brought out. Our meal took over 3 hours and we felt hungry between each dish because each one was yummy and left us wanting more. Meals like this are meant to be savored and eaten slowly. I thought the money was well worth it because of the dining experience and food art. read more

Such a wonderful place for special occasions! The wait staff is sooo beyond friendly and personable. The food is unbelievably fresh and tasty, and the atmosphere is fancy yet comfortable. Uchiko was out of this world! I brought my in-laws here while they were visiting. Uchiko and our amazing waitress surpassed all expectations. My sisters's brother-in-law said this was not something he would ever forget. We ordered so much I'll just have to add pictures. The Wagyu was unbelievable. The dessert was amazing.
