I normally don't give bad reviews but this time I would just like to share my experience. I have made two hair appointments in the last two months. Unfortunately both appointments were canceled at the last minute due to the hairstylist called in sick. I understand the health implications and realize the shortage of employees but this damaging to their business let alone my disappointment and aggravation. I go here before I ever buy anything anywhere else (like Sephora). They have an extremely good return policy. You know, I promised myself some time ago that I would not post any more 'one star' reviews...but then something terrible happens. Ulta is terrible, well actually, their customer service is terrible. We have a "Ulta Beauty" credit card that we use here at the store and online for orders, but recently we've had problems with the card, and their customer service folks don't care! Or they lie to you or they are incapable of doing their jobs properly. Not sure which is true. First we had a problem with a late payment charge. We called the credit card company and discussed the issue with their customer rep, and she assured us that no fee would be charged. We'd sent the full payment to them in plenty of time for it to arrive, but the mail swallowed it for about 10 days...when it finally arrived, it was "late" and we were charged a penalty after being assured that we would not. Then more recently we discovered two fraudulent charges on our account made by some crook somewhere. After initiating a claim with Ulta the first charge (a lower amount) was forgiven, but the second criminal action was not forgiven. It was for $140 to AirB&B and they said that charge was "examined" or researched or whatever, and then denied. Please understand, dear readers, NOBODY in our entire family has ever used AirB&B nor have we traveled anywhere in the last 2-plus years because of the pandemic. Maybe Ulta uses a third party credit company to run their credit card business, but even if they do that does not matter. It is all still the same company, and the bottom line is that the Ulta credit card sucks. Their customer service process is unfair and idiotic, and the people are impossible to deal with. Don't ever get their credit card and don't bother calling customer service because they won't believe you and they won't help you. read more

My experience at the Hair Salon was amazing! I have gone to Carlyle Salon and I thought I was going to get amazing hair because well that's what the reviews led me to believe and I was dead wrong. So I went to another salon in downtown and they were okay. I was ready to give up and go back to the amazing hair stylists in Orange County when I found Katherine. She is such an amazing person and on top of it an amazing hairstylist. I fell in love with her and her work. She didn't seem so sure she could make out what I wanted but she tried her best and she made it happen. I love that she put all her attention on my hair and made sure that the process was quick. I just can't wait to go back to her in 2 months. She's so beautiful inside and out. Don't undermine any salon because you might just find a hidden gem. read more

This is for the salon at Ulta, not the store itself. I rarely write bad reviews, but this Ulta is just not the place to get a haircut. I am new to the area and so I got two haircuts at Ulta before deciding that the convenient location and low price wasn't worth it. For both haircuts--with two different stylists--they told me that they "preferred cutting dry" and so didn't wash or blow dry my hair. This doesn't reduce the price, however, and I feel like it's just a convenient way for the stylist to get out of the time-consuming wash and blow dry. Also, on my first visit the stylist asked me if I wanted it straightened and since I do normally straighten my hair I said yes. When I went to pay I noticed she added a $10 charge to the bill! So, she didn't give me half of the haircut (the wash and blow dry) but added extra to the total price. For both haircuts I wanted a normal cut with long layers just to make it lay nicely, and both stylists did a crazy amount of layering in my hair that I definitely didn't ask for. The first stylist mentioned that I had a "mom haircut" and talked about all the crazy things that happen in IV where she lives. The second stylist told me that my side part looked like "TV anchor hair." Who are these people? Anyway, both haircuts left me feeling deflated so I finally found a new salon (Cutting Edge Hair Salon in Goleta) and I couldn't be happier. read more

For being in such a prime location (the one and only freaking Camino Real shopping center!!!), this store, in my opinion, does not meet the Camino Real standards. Sure it is new, so it is relatively clean and modern inside. However, what is deceiving is that the store seems so large, you would expect their selection and stock to match up! This is most definitely NOT the case. I would browse the aisles with many of their products no longer on the shelves (if you don't believe me, check out their consistently empty Essie nail polish stand). On the other hand, I do like how they offer CARGO products, because Sephora no longer seems to carry that brand. Service is pretty meh. Usually check out can be a slow and painful process -- not really sure why. It's always so much faster at Sephora even with Ulta having more people manning the cashiers! The staff are pretty friendly overall, as they circulate the store asking if I'm finding everything okay, but they really need to expedite and make the check out process more efficient. read more

This place is sort of hit and miss. Some employees are super helpful. And others are so lazy that I want to leave and buy items online. The items they sell are sort of a collection of CVS brands/prices to spa-worthy products, with a bit of Macy's and Sephora-type inventory mixed in. They have a lot of items. Basically any item to care for your hair (shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, oils, treatments, clips, scrunchies, bla bla bla), face (many cleansers, treatments, creams, masques, make up, mascara, etc etc) and body (nail polish, body wash, waxing items, TBC) . Get the point? :) but why do I shop here? They have a pretty good return policy. If you purchase an item that ultimately fails, just take the item and the RECEIPT and get your $$$ back. Yep. (Resist the urge to leave if you get a lazy associate. There IS someone who will be nice and help you.) read more

Just stopped in to pick up a few "drug store items" I needed - wow. Amazing selection, and it seemed everything I looked at was way cheaper than Target, etc. Lots of items on "clearance" at surprisingly low prices. Grabbed a few items, paid using one of the coupons I got in my Sunday newspaper, got home and looked in the bag, remembering the clerk had mentioned something about a "free gift"....well, there was not "a" free gift - there were FIVE! - one of which was a KMS hair product (love KMS!), and one was a FULL SIZE Ulta eyeliner in the color I wear most - green. (Did she notice I have green eyes or was this simply a coincidence?) While the customer service is far lacking compared to Sephora, it was fun come home with a bag of goodies for ten bucks! That said, customer service needs some polishing. Never having visited an ULTA store, I wanted to peruse the ULTA brand cosmetics, but an employee re-stocking that display happened to have a bunch of boxes, etc right in front of it. I kind of felt in his way, and wish he had simply looked up, said hello or smiled. Moving on to another aisle, a woman did finally acknowledge my presence and ask if I needed assistance. (Turns out she was the one who later rang up my purchases, so perhaps they are short-staffed?) I asked her opinion on a particular shade of brow pencil I was considering - she agreed it was too dark for me. Then walked away. At Sephora they take you to the display, show you better selections for your coloring, then offer to apply it so you can see before you buy. (I never did purchase one...) I guess it just depends on what it is you are shopping for - sometimes you don't want a lot of attention - just want to "treasure hunt", find bargains, or try new products without a huge investment - ULTA is just the place! read more

I'm pretty sure the cashier who helped us was Alexandra. She was SO sweet and helpful! I was buying eyeliner and found a gift set without a price in the clearance section. I was just about to check out at that time so I asked the cashier if she could check the price! It was only like $7 for 5 nice eyeliners! I love the location of this store (good parking, around other stores/business I frequent), but that is about it. The shelves are always half empty and the stock is very disorganized. The staff does not seem to have answers to any questions and seem unfamiliar with the products, and oftentimes rude. Most annoying is this experience: they have been out of two very basic products, and in both situations, told me that they weren't getting anymore, and that the product had been discontinued by the manufacturer. I then went to Sephora, and they had the products and found it odd that Ulta said the products were discontinued as they had heard nothing about it. After contacting the actual manufacturers, I found out that this was completely untrue. Fact of the matter seems to be that the staff at Ulta don't know the answer as to why they don't have basic stock, and doesn't feel like looking into it. Save yourself the trouble, just go to Sephora, or a drugstore if it is a cheaper item. read more

350th review! Times flies when you're eating well... (or shopping, or getting screwed by the worst post office in the history of the US Postal Service: Lenox Hill on the Upper East Side of Manhattan). I visited Ulta in Orange County a few years ago, long before we got one in Santa Barbara. And no words capture the wonderfulness of this large, immaculate, shiny palace of beauty. I don't go much as it's out in Goleta by Costco and I have no reason to schlep out there. But PUR is the last tinted moisturizer I will wear for the rest of my life. If they go out of business, I will buy 20 tubes to hold me for a decade until a product comes to fill the void. It's 34 dollars and provides all the coverage I need at this point in my life. I bought a curling iron in the OC and it's terrific. And they have an enormous fragrance collection, from Escada to Burberry to Coach to Dior. The only fragrance they don't carry that I know of is Tom Ford. And the service is unequalled. The girls are so friendly and they know their stuff intimately. I bought for 64 dollars 1.7 ounces of Burberry Brit Sheer. It was only 12 dollars more than the 1 ounce: nearly double the quantity for just a little more! The woman also showed me an atomizer (refillable and washable) you can take on the plane for just 10 dollars. Unlike Sephora, which is rushed, cramped, and loud with often very irritating clubby music, Ulta is a joy to visit and they have all kinds of cutesy impulse buys at the counter. On your birthday month, you receive double points. And you don't have to mess with parking in Paseo Nuevo as you do for Sephora. It's not that the girls at Sephora aren't nice, but they are understaffed and at Ulta, you can really explore and ask questions. I cannot say enough for this store and do not understand the low Yelp rating at all. P.S. I bought a cute polka dot travel electric toothbrush for 15 last year. I lost it but I loved it and for 15, you can't do better. read more

Okay I went to ulta today and was blown away by the service I received. Some of the workers at Sephora have been so rude to me. But the girl (I'm racking my brain trying to remember her name, she was skinny , Latina, pretty , wearing a black dress) that helped me was so incredibly sweet and helpful. She took her time and listened to my needs as I was looking for a new foundation. She didn't try to push me to buy anything; she was honest and so so so helpful and knowledgeable!! I am torn between liking that I can be left alone to browse the store aimlessly just to be surrounded by happiness that is Ulta, and not liking that once I find something I want, it is like pulling teeth to get a sales attendant to attend to you. I'm not picky about being greeted and such but don't be surprised if the girls give you the once-over and continue their gossip without a greeting to you, or shout out a brief "hello" over their shoulder before turning back to their task. Aside from about two kind ladies that helped me out in earnest, more than often, I walked out of there feeling like I was being a bother to the sales girls. Came here yesterday to find a brush holder/case and too-faced primer. They literally had NO make up bags for sale. They ran out. I find this odd. It's a cosmetics store...you'd think they'd sell items to I don't know...contain the cosmetic products you buy here? So, that was annoying. Do your inventory people! Maybe you won't be low on products and supplies. And their employees, while friendly, are obviously not very skilled in their training in both applying and selling make-up. I've been a frequent customer of this location since opening weekend (they were giving away gift certificates and goodie bags that weekend, so I went twice!) Anyways, I'm not sure if my experiences are common for all Ulta's , or just this one, as I've only ever shopped here. The positives-- they have a lot of diversity between various lines and price points. If you want a black eye liner, you can spend $6 for a great one from Prestige, or $20 for a good one from Urban Decay. Same with hair care products, which I generally avoid because I'm terrible at doing my hair. The negatives-- this store is really slow to receive new product. I've been checking for weeks to see when they will get new shades of L'Oreal Infallible e/s. I finally gave up and visited a few local drugstores (Rite-Aid, CVS, and Walgreens) until I found the new color in stock. Ulta, as of today, still doesn't have the new collection! Uhg. Also, they are slow to put out new collections. They had mailed out the free Clinique lipstick mailer *before* unboxing and setting up their new Clinique counter. What the heck? I had to wait a few weeks before returning and redeeming my free lipstick coupon. Also, the sales people. Oh, the sales people....they are nice at best. Most of them are not informed and don't have much training. It's probably not their fault, but the store. I know Sephora has a lot more training for their employee's, so if I actually want to bother asking a sales person about something, I would go to Sephora or Nordstrom's, *not* Ulta. The best part about Ulta's is their coupons. You can use a $3.50/off coupon (minimum purchase $10, drugstore items only, not prestige cosmetics) and a 20%-off one item coupon in the same transaction...mix that in with some of their buy one, get one 50% off deals and you just saved yourself a pretty penny. I love their sales, coupons, and other deals! Now, if only they could train all employee's to a higher level *and* get new products/collections in stock and on display within a reasonable time!!! read more

Two staffs at the cashier was chatting with one customer for over ten minutes! When it was my turn the cashier just said "whats your phone number" that was it. Walked into the store on a tuesday night, it was very empty (customer wise). Did not hear a hello. When asked if I could be helped (they did not have half of the lipsticks I wanted to try as samples), the woman walked away with the unopened one (seeing if she is allowed to open this one) never to return. When I was asked if I needed help again, by a different person this time, I told her I was waiting on a lipstick. She asked if I knew the number of it..um NO, she said there was nothing she could do. As I found another brand of lipstick, I asked the second woman if they had any more because the stand was filled with 2/5 of them. She looked at it and said they didn't have anymore. My experience at the hair salon was sub-par. The reason I decided to try the hair salon at Ulta was because I received via mail a coupon for a $30 cut and style for new guests. It said to book online by 4/19/2017. On Wednesday the 19th, I didn't have access to wifi, so I called and made an appointment over the phone. The woman I spoke to said there were no walk-ins available for that day, so I made one for 1 o'clock the next day (Thursday). When I arrived Thursday at 1, there was no one at the salon counter. After waiting a few moments, I went in search of an employee. The store was nearly empty, so I found one immediately. She directed me to Cecilia, who was to be my stylist. Cecilia acknowledged me then promptly walked away with some guy she had been talking to. I continued to wait at the salon bar for an extra 5-10 minutes while various other employees asked me if I had an appointment and didn't seem to know where Cecilia had gone. This all happened while on my lunch break, so I was under a time constraint. Strangely, it wasn't until 3:54 pm that same day that I received a text confirming my appointment at 1 pm. A miscommunication about appointments is understandable, but I found Cecilia's behavior to be unprofessional. Additionally, I was not very satisfied with the haircut she gave. I asked for layers and a trim - I said that I don't mind sacrificing a bit of length if it makes my ends look healthier. But after she was finished, I had to ask her to go over certain spots again, because there were still lots of noticeable split ends. She also didn't cut the hair framing my face at all until I specifically requested. My hair also felt very dry after the blowout. I was curious about the products she used. She used Redken anti-frizz shampoo, which I don't feel was very appropriate for my hair type. I'm not sure what hairspray she used (she wasn't sure when I asked), but it didn't seem to have any heat protective elements. My hair felt damaged after the blowout. And finally, she was very rough with the way she handled my hair. She neglected to brush out any of the tangles after washing my hair, so each time she made a long pass with the comb, it ripped out some of my baby hairs. I could see them knotted in the comb after she was finished. I'm not usually tender headed, but that hurt. Disappointingly, I forgot to bring the coupon with me to my appointment, so I paid full price for this negative experience. read more

When there's a sale, the workers usually charge you for the regular price. Yesterday I came here, and a lot of items were not in stock and there were empty shelves. You're better off buying it online! Some of the shelves were a mess and unorganized. There's a lack of customer service since no one greet me or offer for help. And the cashier wasn't friendly. I went into this Ulta because I was in the city for work. I really needed a new face sunblock and Clinique powder. When I walked in, I was greeted very fast. The lady that helped me (I forgot here name, ugh) was very knowledgeable and not pushy at all. I told her what I wanted and she knew right away what I wanted. Store was very clean and stocked.
