I want to give this location 5 stars for their selection of products, and cleanliness but I have never had a good customer experience here. I shop at Ulta not for myself, but instead for my teenage daughter. Each time I come in sans makeup the employees take one look at me and keep on going about their business, today was no exception. I made eye contact with several employees while looking for the Wednesday blush palette and each of them turned away. After awhile of not being able to locate the item I approached 4 employees that were chatting near the entrance to inquire about the product. All 4 looked at each other like "you're it" before 1 finally lost and said she would look in the back. She was thankfully able to find it and my daughter and I quickly checked out. You are greeted as soon as you walk through the front door and everything is very organized and neatly placed around the store. The workers are extremely kind and friendly and they're always there to assist you if you're ever looking for a certain brand or product. Had an amazing experience at the hair salon with stylist LaShawn Greene. I was visiting from Florida and wanted a blow dry during my time in Detroit. Too many different employees coming up to me in the aisles asking if I need help or if I was looking for anything in particular. Good thing is there is lots of employees in the building whenever I go, easy to find one if I ever need anything. And that is the way, if I need something I will reach out to them. You know, Ulta. There was a stretch there where it seemed no one cared when you shopped at Ulta. Honestly in the last year I have had SO many great experiences in different Ulta stores!! Recently the cashier explained their points system patiently to me. It turned out I had tons of points built up and I didn't realize they were redeemable for product. I walked out with a ton of product for free! I've always been too busy to inquire about their points system and she took the time to explain it to me. I really like how helpful the staff is. Super disappointed with the customer service!! My daughter was shopping for items as she was preparing to go back to college after break. She was checking out with $165 in purchases. She had multiple gift cards to use - most of which were Ulta Gift cards. The clerk advised her after she used the first two gift cards that it is Ulta's policy that only two gift cards can be used for an in-store purchase. My daughter was stuck having to pay cash for the remainder of the purchase - not what she was planning on as a 19 year old college student. Here is the policy as noted from Ulta's site: "Only one Gift or eGift Card can be applied to an Ulta Beauty online order. However, you can use multiple Gift or eGift Cards on an in-store purchase. Ulta Customer Service Menu - Ulta Beauty Ulta Beauty" What behavior is Ulta driving if their cashiers reject their own gift cards for use, don't understand / quotes policies incorrectly, and treat someone disrespectfully?!! In general I like Ulta. I am giving this location a good score due to the kind staff. I like the products at Ulta. I am a fan of their Ulta Rewards system. It is really easy to accumulate points and earn money off future purchases. They have some of my favorite makeup brands, perfumes and skin products. I love their promotions. I have sooooo many free bags and blankets from them, but I use every single free gift from my purchases. I have not had to buy an overnight bag, picnic bag, or cozy blanket in years! I love their sales and coupons. For the holidays, I have found so many little stocking stuffers for the kids or little knickknacks at great prices. This is one of my go-to places. I do not like that some of the stock gets picked over, or that customers often sabotage products by opening them and putting them back. I also do not like that their shipments to restock are very sporadic, or that their birthday rewards are never on time. On the other hand, love love love the birthday rewards. They are typically very generous. I do sometimes shop online, but I prefer the in-store experience if I am able to come inside. read more

Had my hair curled (just curled) asked for beach waves or a boho look (my hair is mid-back length) and had makeup application. I left looking like Shirley Temple curls with drag queen makeup. Asked for no pink for eye shadow, showed her a picture of a brownish burgundy smokey eye. She used pink as the main color and a sparkly purple. My eyes looked bloodshot. Probably at least a 1/4" thick of makeup. (I have great normal skin) She ran a half and hour longer, so she couldn't correct it, even after asking her after I saw the first preview because time wouldn't allow it. Got there at 11 and left at 1. Needless to say, I had to wash my face 3 times to get the makeup off before leaving for the hotel. I was embarrassed to be seen like that. Stressed the whole time when arrived, re-did my own makeup and wet down those curls, didn't have time to wash my hair so had to live with it. Complained when I paid, not one, I'm sorry you aren't happy. I won't mention the stylist name, but she shouldn't be in the beauty industry. read more

I love ULTA and this location is great. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I have used the salon for cuts for years, and love their signature cut with the Redken conditioning treatment. There are so many sales and specials to shop, and you earn points to get rewards and a free gift during your birthday month. Make sure you sign up for an account to get emails and shop the sales. This one has a big Benefit counter, so they can make your brows look phenomenal. Another great thing to shop here are their sampler Beauty Finds sets. In October they do a day with affordable haircuts that donates to charity. Spring is 21 days of beauty, which is awesome. Christmas has tons of gift sets and specials. Online shopping often offers great bonus items! They are great about returns, too, which you can do in store. Love love you ULTA!! read more

They got great collections, I have been to quite a few Ulta Retails, I found this one to be the best so far in my opinion. I think it's well stocked with stuff not sold in other stores and it's cleaner than others. While it's certainly possible to just pop in to replenish something you need, I highly recommend going when you have the time to browse, sample, chat with a knowledgeable associate, and check out the seasonal products as well as the sales/specials. This is not my first visit to Ulta, but is my first time at the Northvillle store; I was in the area, had the time, and needed a few things. I would definitely return to this location. Not only is the store clean, bright and orderly, they have Dee. Dee is very helpful, accommodating, and pleasant. Dee listened to my concerns, answered my questions, understood my desires, and not only pointed me in the right direction, she made personal recommendations and helped me sample some items to make sure I was making the right choices. In the retail area, Dina, who works with the Estee Lauder product line was pleasant and helpful. She helped me find a cosmetic brush from another cosmetic line. However, I felt their store security personnel appeared hyper-vigilant and greeted me at the beauty salon when I checked in and out from the salon. Also, a store security employee watched me while I paid my bill. Granted stores need to have security but they also need to balance it with the store's ambience. read more

I wish we could review the salon and the store separately because they are two pretty different experiences. In the salon, Maggie does the facials with Dermalogica products. She does a fantastic job and is the perfect balance of honesty about the condition of your skin and knowing when the skin care lesson is over and letting you relax for a bit. I have been avoiding facials for a few years because nothing bugs me more than the hard sell of products after you are happy and relaxed. Maggie told me when she was finished what kind of skin care products would address my issues....so I was bracing for the 20 minute pressure pitch about Dermalogica products. Nope. Didn't happen. (Not for nothin', Dermalogica is a fantastic product, but definitely a high-end brand) Maggie told me what she uses on her skin and then wished me well until we meet again. Because my insane, yucky pre-menopausal skin looked and felt incredible after she worked her magic, we'll be seeing much, much more of each other. Just a few caveats: When you are having skin care services done, you will be given the option to leave your shirt on or change into one of those terry long tube top wraparound smock thingies. The smock is a better idea, you don't want product on your shirt. For someone like me, who has bingo wings and couldn't remember if I had shaved my armpits the night before, this is sort of uncomfortable. You have to change in the restroom and walk a little bit to the facial area. It's not a major thing, but just be aware. Also, not always, but sometimes, their salon appointments run late. Either you are seen late or your appointment runs long, so the next person is late. I don't have enough of a problem with this to not go back, but if you are trying to get in-and-out on your lunch hour you should plan accordingly. I can review the store part of this location fairly quickly. The girls working there are very friendly, but seem like they are all burdened with too much to do. On several occasions the website has said a product was in stock, yet no one was able to find it and kind of just shrugged and said "sorry." About a week after I got a sales flyer in the mail I went in for one of the advertised items. Several of the employees told me the item was somewhere in the stockroom, but they were understaffed and because the holidays are near, it would be quite a while for them to get stock on the floor. One employee actually said I would probably need to just come in every day to see what has been unpacked. Hey Ulta-this isn't ok. Keep in mind that if you need holiday help, I will work for makeup, skincare products or fragrances. Call me. We'll talk. read more

I am no longer a brow-wax virgin! I have dark, fine hair without a lot of overgrowth, so I never thought I was a necessary candidate for an eyebrow waxing. So I'd pluck here and there and go about my business. Boy was I wrong! Having my eyebrows shaped at ULTA helped to highlight my brow bone, and completely changed the appearance of my eyes (for the better!) My eyes look more rested, alert, and youthful. I will warn you that this additional little self-maintenance routine is highly addictive...now when my eyebrows grow in, I feel like a werewolf. But the upkeep is minimal, just schedule a visit every month or two. 4 stars total because I don't really shop or go to the salon here, but 5 stars for the Brow Bar! **Ask for Lindsay, she's does an amazing job!** read more

I am a true beauty junkie. Give me anything skincare or cosmetics related, and I will be on cloud nine. It is no surprise I quite litterally jumped for joy when I realized this Ulta would open. Until then, I would have to get my Ulta fix in Allen Park or near Lakeside Mall. There are plenty of places to purchase high-end cosmetics and skincare products, counters in department stores, Sephora, and online webshops. But what sets Ulta apart from these other options is that such items are now available without visiting a busy mall. I also like that Ulta combines high end products (Smashbox, Benefit, Dermalogica, Urban Decay, Frederic Fekkai) with regular drugstore brand products such as L'oreal, Nivea, Sally Hansen and Rimmel. Ulta stores also have a built-in salon which offers hair and nail services, as well as Dermalogica facials. This Ulta also features one of the famed Benefit Brow Bar's ~ supposedly gurus in eyebrow shaping. Like Sephora, Ulta had a customer loyalty program in which you accumulate points that you can use to receive discounts, salon services and more. I am a big fan of Mario Badescu skincare and am thrilled I can pick up my favorites close to home now. The staff at this store is friendly, and the overall shopping experience is pleasant. read more

Unfortunately. I had to drop 2 stars off of my original 5 star review. After my 1st brow job with Angela, it came time for my next appointment (4 weeks after my initial visit). I got off work early so I called to see if I could get in early. To my horror, I was told that Angela had left the company 3 weeks ago. Really?! After I picked the pieces of my broken heart up off of the floor, I told the woman on the phone that I had an appointment at 6pm and no one called to cancel. I was then told that someone else was working and could do my brows. This really upset me. I made my appointment with Angela specifically. Why didn't I receive a call, letting me know that she wasn't going to be there? I went to the appointment anyway and I was not happy with the outcome. I was left with one of the worst brow jobs I've ever had in my life. However, I will give them one more shot. So here I am with insanely hideous brows that I am forced to grow back. Service is hit or miss- sometimes they can be helpful and other times too busy yakking with each other to help. They need to clean up the store and Organize the shelves - do an inventory of items- too often out of something I received a flyer of a sale that started yesterday. I got there at 11 ( knew exactly what I wanted) - shampoo $15.99- the flyer names several brands / types but in the store not half of the shampoo brands were available ( out of stock) very limited brands- yet online you could get these brands. If you're having a sale- have the product available. In fact I had to go to the back and look for my brand- they didn't have te sale signs up, so I had to look for someone to look up the price. Same with the cover girl buy one get the 2nd 50% off. No signs so I wasn't sure if I read the flyer correctly. They didn't have one available, so again had to look for someone to price check. Get the signs up!!! The website had a curling iron, that I've wanted, on sale, but in store they didn't have the same price. It was a $30 savings. I don't understand how the website has an item on sale yet not the same in the store :( read more

I love my stylist, Mandie, so much that I followed her to this location even though the Ulta she used to work at is literally half a mile from my house. She knows my hair, and gets it right every time. I get so many compliments, it's ridiculous. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my eyebrows either--she does them perfectly. I've referred basically my entire family to her, and they all love her too. I can't give a full five stars, because even though Mandie and the salon in general certainly warrant it, the actual store part does not. I hate so much when associates jump up my butt (figuratively!) if I so much as wander past a particular display, and that's exactly what they do here. I understand some people want the assistance, but I'm not one of them. If I have a question, I'll ask. If not, I just want to be left alone to browse. Anyway, Ulta has a great salon, a great selection of products, and a very helpful (albeit overenthusiastic) sales staff. Highly recommend. read more

This location has the best setup, easy to walk through, all my favorite products, and great environment. Also enjoy getting my eyebrows done at the Benefit Brow Bar. The staff are hit or miss. Sometimes they are super friendly and sometimes ignore customers. Today, however I had a bad experience while checking out. Cashier's name was Deborah who was rude and annoyed throughout the whole transaction. I didn't get a friendly greeting and she never smiled once. She didn't want to honor my 20% coupon for my Platinum status. Then she rolled her eyes at me for wanting to use Apple Pay. I had hair color with Mandie who was really a treat to work with. Due to illness, I had not been able to sit in a salon chair for some time so my color was pretty rough. Mandie made me feel at ease right away and throughout the process. She is humbly confident and knew exactly what to do without my bumbling to tell her what I thought I needed. The manager was so rude! I was in the store today to exchange my product because, it was broken. They had just opened and the lady assisting me with my exchange, was equally rude. She never greeted me and did not initiate conversation, I felt like I was bothering them. It took them 15 minutes or more to handle the exchange and during so, the associate told me that, dogs are not allowed in the store. Hey lady, like I said, she is a service dog! I won't visit this location in the future, there are plenty of other stores that want my business, and don't take it for granted. A simple smile or comfortable conversation, was welcomed and desired. Dropped in here because I needed to pick up my eyebrow pencil. Everyone that works there is SO friendly. I had Nora and Kristine helping me. I loved how Nora's eyebrows looked so she helped me pick out a color and introduced me to the new Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade. LOVE!!!!! I usually use the Anastasia pencil which I still love but now I use a little bit of both. I watched Kristine give someone an eyebrow wax and fill in and she does an INCREDIBLE job. I had just cleaned up my eyebrows myself but the next time I need them done (which is often!) I will for sure be going to see Kristine. They both were very knowledgeable about all the questions I had and referred me to great make up lines! I go to Ulta all the time as I work next door to one but these girls were way more helpful!
