When in New Orleans, a tour of the swamp is a must (or so we were told) and after some research, it seemed as though Ultimate Swamp Adventures was the way to go. We made the drive out to the dock and waited with others by the boats. A group of men (who later turned out to be our tour guides) were smoking down by the end of the dock, cursing, and flicking cigarette butts into the water. This can't be good for the environment, I thought. In fact appears to be against the law in Louisiana. But more than that, you'd expect that people that make their living as ambassadors of the swamp would care about the environment, THIER environment, more than this. Nope. Butt after butt was flicked into the water that we were about to explore. As the men walked by, one of them said to his buddy that he'd rather be at home. He turned out to be our guide. Yay! Aboard our 30 person boat, our guide scouted out typical gator sighting spots. When we finally found one, our guide took out a bag and tossed a few marshmallows into the water to lure the 10 foot gator over to us. I'll admit, this made for some great pictures as the alligator enthusiastically ate the floating treats. But when our guide offered the alligator some chicken, surely a whole chicken is preferable to a ball of sugar. Nope. Gator after gator (there were 4 in all) rejected the chicken, instead waiting for more marshmallows. There's something wrong with this picture. Alligators are (or should be) carnivores. And I felt uneasy knowing that these alligators were conditioned for my entertainment. And as I stared into the murky green water, reflecting on the whole experience and my role in supporting the swamp tour industry, a cigarette butt floated by. read more

It's haunting season in the bayou! Louisiana is one of two states famous for its bayous, which are intricately linked to Creole culture. Glad we made it to the tour as it was one of the highlights of our trip. We were out on an adventure under a covered boat in search of alligators, wild hogs, snakes, egrets, bald eagles... any wildlife. This was the closest natural swamp to New Orleans. Saw alligators come our way... I never knew alligators liked marshmallows LoL! Our experienced boat captain, Gary, added to the adventure by providing us in-depth information about the bayou wildlife. He was funny too! Very educational but I had a little difficulty understanding everything he was saying as he had a very heavy Cajun accent. Most of us non-Cajuns would refer to a bayou as a "swamp". but no matter what you call it bayous (or swamps) develop in low-lying areas where water moves slowly where a plethora of wildlife thrives. Saw more alligators here than our adventure tour at the Everglades National Park in Florida. Towards the end of our tour as we were heading back to the dock we saw a couple of hunters caught three gators! Yep! Hunting season is on! The east zone opened last Wednesday (August) and is open for 30 days. An alligator hunter must either own land or have permission to hunt alligators on land that qualifies for alligator harvest tags. They also must have with them an alligator hunter's license. There's even a method in hunting as our tour guide explained to us... at the end of his description he said "easy!" LoL The tour offered hotel pick-ups but we drove out to the site which was only 11 miles from our hotel in downtown, not very far at all. So perhaps my 5 star review is moved too much by the fact that it is the only swamp tour that I have ever been on. That's fair. However, I consider myself intelligent enough to critically think about my experience and how it could have been better. Coming up short of being objective, only thing I can think of that would have made it better would be free beer/refreshments. No shit , GREAT TOUR! We had Captain Dylan as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and it was clear that he lived the life of a hunter. This added a level of authenticity which moved me to becoming heavily engaged in the tour. Now, Captain Dylan was a bit of a meanie (Kushan) he literally called my boyfriend out for drinking a Truly! Now thankfully my boyfriend wasn't upset, so I didn't have to put paws on him. . (I joke I joke I kid I kid) All joking aside, Captain Dylan was great, informative and made sure we could see alligators up close. Uh, well. We had fun? But our tour guy picked on my friend the ENTIRE time. And I have tough skin, so I bantered with him a bit in the beginning, but then it just got old. And we just ignored him and talked amongst ourselves and just enjoyed the boat ride the rest of the time. We saw 3 gators. Only one of them was large. The only really cool part of this trip was when the guy lifted the gator from the water. The gators that we did see do come right up to the boat for those marshmallows, so they're definitely used to tourists. Other than that and the swamp itself?! We didn't see much. The swamp was peaceful and the ride was great. We bought it through a Groupon so I'm trying not to complain so much? But my fiancée did the same tour and got to see more. Some people went and got to hold a gator?! We definitely did not get to hold any... Our experience was mediocre but you'll still have a good time. My friend and I had fun together. And it seems a lot of other people had a much better time than us. I should mention that we took A pontoon boat instead of the air, but i think I would choose the air boat knowing what I know now. Made my arrangements with a tour operator on St. Louis Street...he recommended the high-speed airboat -- "More fun, baby. Especially at dusk. That's when the animals are feeding!,"Okay, SOLD. I paid a $25 deposit on a $75 trip including shuttle pickup from my hotel. The balance to be paid on site. Bummer now I'm on Yelp and I see the Groupon price was $22...oh well...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this experience at any price. Well, it was worth $75 to me. THE TRANSPORTATION: Great experience with the transport. The shuttle bus was an unmarked one, driven by Terry. She text me her ETA, and let me know also by text when she was in front of my hotel on Canal & Bourbon sts. The pickup time was between 4:45 pm and 5:15 pm. She arrived within that window. Yay. Terry was friendly and she gave a little tour along the route...including a brief drive by to the Hurricane Katrina memorial. Also she was glad to give advice about food and where to eat, including an insider tip about a bar near the outfitter....where a bigtime high-end chef now made food out of kitchen at the back of a bar...[Three of us on the shuttle followed her advice...for $1.50 each you can get Boudin Balls - fabulous and delish when tipped into a pinkish tartar-like sauce...wish I could have tried one of everything on that menu taped to the back wall of that bar)... CHILL RIDE -- Upon asking, the Captain told us which side was the "wet" side...first sets on the left if you want to be drenched. Safety was explained...life vests under the seat, watch out for your stuff, he'd let us know when it was time to wear the headphones provided, "because it gets loud." And that we'd be going slow, not causing a wake, or making a lot of speed or noise for the first 10 minutes, until we got outside the NO WAKE zone. We motored through the swamp with its gorgeous trees draped with moss on it. It's LOUD even at cruise speed...so I had the headphones on...and found I could hear the Captain, as well as enjoy a lovely trip down this swamp with a wide waterway. WILD RIDE -- After he tells you to put on the headphones...the airboat roars alive...and basically it sounds like an airplane jet engine at your back. A few hairpin tours...and now I get it...thrill ride...right through marshland...vegetation parts and recollects behind us, so you can't really tell what the initial pathway was...and YUP, the folks on the left got splashed on most of the quick turns. Quell the screams of delight...and shrieks of OMG this is fast....KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED, lest you get mucky stinky marsh-y bits in...the water is ooze-y with mud and gunk...and smells sulphurous...and when you are stopped in the middle of it, savor the odor of something rotting. Also be ready to get smacked in the face by dragonflies...and also I was surprised there were more flying biting critters at dusk...but you might be whacked by a large bug. WILDLIFE: We only saw one gator...she was a young mama...and we learned how she'd open her mouth and let her hatchlings inside her face...when it's safe she opens her mouth and lets them out. We also learned the difference between a croc and an alligator besides the fact one starts with a "c" and the other starts with an "a"... We saw lovely snowy egret and crested heron standing, sleeping with one leg up, flying low....the boat could keep up with a flying heron... OVERALL: Knowledgeable guides, friendly and fun...and a little wee bit crazy!!! (Kissing a wild alligator on the nose is bonkers!) BIG PLUS -- This noisy ride is not in the national park...it's private property, which makes being environmentally insensitive sit a lot easier. Animals know these loud boats are here, so they can mosey on to the quiet protection and safety at the adjacent park. BIG-TIME FUN. AND... I learned the difference between a bayou, swamp, and marsh. Highly recommend. Found the tour through Groupon. I usually have problems with Groupon purchases but this one went smoothly. By the way, the Groupon does not include transportation to and from the tour. That is a separate $15 round-trip. I didn't know it was round trip so I took a Uber to come, big mistake. The shuttle will pick you up from your hotel around the French quarter. Make sure you arrive early. Don't quote me but I think they may take off early so long as everyone is there. We were walking up 15 min prior and they were calling on the cell asking where were we. I guess we were the last customers and they were ready to go. We thought we were a little too early so we tarried in the parking lot for about 15 min before that. I think there's also some local bars and eateries you can go to while you wait. Side note: unbeknownst to me, I booked through a third party so you're tickets/email may say one thing and the name on the sign may say another. You're not in the wrong place. I wanted to wear a baseball cap to beat the heat but decided not to because I was worried it'd fly off on the airboat but if you wear a hat, you should be okay. Plenty of people had them on. Just make sure it's snug on your head because if you do lose it---you're SOL. Good news is the weather wasn't terribly hot but that could be because we chose the earlier tour. I lived in New Orleans the first 25 years of my life and never once considered going on a swamp tour but the good thing about being married to someone and having friends not from New Orleans, every time I come back I get the opportunity to see my hometown through the eyes of tourist (and they see it through the eyes of a native--even exchange). This swamp tour, among other things, was very enlightening. I was shocked about how much fun I had and how much I learned. I was also surprised on how beautiful it was out in the swamp. If you don't see alligators on this tour then I'll be surprised. They are just so use to these tour boats and tour guides feeding them, they come right up to the boat. We came in from Chicago and found the tour on Groupon. We rode on 7/22 on the 4 pm tour. The bus was boarded but because our Uber was late we arrived to board around 4:05 pm. This tour was super cool! The bayou was beautiful and the weather was gorgeous! We actually got to see a lot of animals, fish, birds etc. The reason that I only provide ONE star was for what was explained above, the actual nature aspect of this tour was very amazing!! If I could put negative stars on the actual TOUR GUIDE, "Captain Ron". I would. Now, I usually always give every human interaction the benefit of the doubt, and maybe we just caught him on a bad day... I also have worked in customer service for 15+ years, and this guy was a complete impatient, rude, asshole!! He absolutely has great knowledge of the bayou and had a lot to say, but because of his utter lack of patience and complete intolerance of any one even SPEAKING, he not only made us feel constantly attacked and singled out (FOR NO REASON),but he also made the experience awful and ruined the tour that my friend was so so excited about. When my friend is falling asleep on a 90 degree swamp tour because she's not allowed to talk or stay stimulated, is not worth the measly $20 we each spent. Considering that this was first tourist event of her birthday, we will not let the experience ruin the rest of her birthday festivities.... I bought a $40 Groupon for 2 people. I was really looking forward to holding a baby alligator on the tour as others have posted pictures of doing so. I came in late June in the low 90 degree weather, where the humidity slaps your makeup off. I brought mosquito repellent only to be told that it could actually attract the sand flys that actually bite. So don't bring any! The mosquitos come out at night anyways. I asked one of the tour guides of a different boat if they have a baby alligator on the boat so that we can hold. He told me that they don't hold on to the alligators and keep them in captivity but if they see one on the tour they will bring it on the boat. We saw a couple of baby alligators and huge ones and unfortunately my tour guide did not try to bring one on the boat. I was disappointed. My tour guide did pick up a medium size alligator from under the chin and almost pecked it on the mouth. That was a cute trick. While on our tour a different boat threw a marshmallow to us and I got to throw it into the swamp to feed an alligator. Someone next to me stated that they wish they knew to bring marshmallows. One of the funnest things I did in New Orleans or should I say West Wego. We did this on our second to the last day so it was easier and cheaper for our group of 5 to rent a car for 1 day and return it to the airport the next day for our flight home. I think it was around $15 per person for the drive and we got the tickets on Groupon. Our tour guide was very funny and hearing him talk with his draw made the experience that much better. The Raider fans were in town for the game against the Saints. Having beat the Saints, the tour guide made several jokes at our expense like "dont worry if you dont find a seat, half the Raider fans won't be coming back" or when a little girl asked about why he was feeding the gators marshmallows he said because his boss wouldn't let him feed them Raider fans. She was wearing a Raider shirt. As funny as it was, it was very informative. The information about the gates to keep out high tides to the Cedar trees and the cedar knees [roots that come out around a Cedar tree so that it can get oxygen]. The Spanish moss was interesting, especially about the fact that bed bugs, termites and other insects use them as home. Unfortunately, Spanish moss had been used by many to stuff beds and pillows which can create problems "don't let the bed bugs bite". We saw plenty of gators throughout our trip but nothing over 6 foot. Seeing a 4' or 5' was enough. We were all looking for Winky, the famous 13' gator with a bad eye. I was not too distressed not to see him. Our guide said that since we were half way though Sept, the middle of the hunting season, most of the larger gators were hiding or dinner. He talked about many of the other animals but we did not see any. This is a great tour. We took the covered boat instead of the air boat and we were all glad we did. traveled just about the same places with the noise and under the comfort of the canopied boat. Its hot in Sept so the cover was a nice treat. There was a nice breeze in the swamp compared to the higher heat and humidity we had left in the French Quarter. read more

If alligators could talk, I assume we'd be best buds. You see, I can't tolerate cold temps. And, as it turns out, neither can the gators! Good to know now. We purchased the swamp tour Groupon and booked our visit for yesterday after two unsuccessful attempts at finding an open slot earlier in the weekend. Our boat had a total of 6 people on it (including the guide) and not one of us spotted a single gator. Not even a tail. Or eyes. Not a single part of a gator. And you know why? Because alligators need to keep a core temperature of 75 degrees or higher...or they go into hibernation. I am from Jersey. Why would I know that? I guess that's how they keep business in the cooler months...by selling tickets to unsuspecting tourists like me who would just assume a swamp tour would include gator sightings. Our guide, Scott, really did try, though. He searched and searched -- pulling the boat into murky vegetation for a better view. He told us where the regular gators hang out (like Flipper and Captain Hook), but not one of the creatures came out of hibernation to bid us a hello for our trek/time/money. I guess money doesn't matter to gators. Bummer! We did, however, see a couple huge rats, a turtle and some birds that like to eat baby gators. I also know way more about gators, cypress trees, Spanish moss, and wildlife native to the area than I did ever before, so thank you, Scott, for that! I would absolutely return during the warmer months to spot some gators in their habitat. In the meantime, I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with my fried gator bites. read more

This was such a great experience! Our first time in Louisiana and this was easily the highlight of the whole trip. My friend and I drove to the location from New Orleans which was not bad at all. Easy directions and easy parking. We walk up and first thing - there's a alligator right there to our right chillin' in the grass. It was so exciting to see that as soon as we got there. Having Danny as our Captain only made the experience that much better. My friend was not into the whole swamp idea in the first place but having him be our guide completely changed her mind. He was not only very nice but answered all our questions and knew a lot about the swamp. He was very kind, witty, and informative. Perfect tour guide. We were with another group of ladies and you could tell everyone was having a great time. I absolutely recommend this company and if you visit Louisiana this is definitely something you need to do! Alligators taste good, even better fried with a little mustard on the side or if you like ketchup. It's your choice. Although, do you know what's a lot better than tasting them is knowing where their habitat is and visiting them. That's a real treat! Mind this, you don't have to be a science lover, a geek or nerd, or even a Big Bang theory to enjoy this. You can be anything you want whether that's a big adult kid, a tiny kid, a grandma or grandpa, or a conservative adult you will take the time to appreciate gators in the nature. The swamps, the outdoors, the heat, and big ole cedar trees that lives a giant spider as big as your head, and the nice cool breeze. This definitely beats sitting on the couch watching your favorite TV show while eating ice cream.. You think we love marshmallows, well personally I don't, but the alligators do. They love them as a snack. I'm sure you can make a sugar-free marshmallow cake and they'll love it! As our tour guide was a sailor as he cursed like one. He was very informational and friendly. If it wasn't for his enthusiasm, I don't think the boat ride would've been as exciting. It was the bomb-diggity!! What was I expecting? This was clearly a tour designed for tourists. Who have watched Swamp People on TV and want to pretend they are Crocodile Dundee. The tour was entertaining as all heck. Captain Gary seemed to have watched all episodes of Swamp People and was doing his best to play the part. But the jokes were old and unoriginal. (Yes. I know alligators favorite food are tourists.) And if his mama really had 25 kids, they'd have their own TV show - "25 kids and not counting because we ran out of fingers and toes" Captain Gary seemed annoyed that I would ask questions. Captain Dylan made this tour such a fun adventure! He had jokes lol pretty witty ones (I won't mention them so he can use them again) he had the boat laughing and having a great time. I really enjoyed learning about the environment and seeing the gators. We saw a baby one all the way up to 9ft. I have never been able to get that close to one in the wild. I visited on Wednesday, August 7th. I took the last afternoon tour. The weather while hot & humid was comfortable when you were out on the water. Our guide was Captain Dylan. We felt safe at all times being unfamiliar with the Bayou. We visited with many juvenile alligators. We watched Cap Dylan get their attention by feeding them marshmallows which the gators think are eggs. Also we watched them jockey for position for fresh raw chicken pieces. We had fun visiting the "Swamp Dogs". Captain Dylan was very friendly & encouraged questions. I bought this on Groupon and honestly wasn't sure how this would turn out for us. We had seen crocodiles in Australia in a similar environment, so weren't totally sure this would measure up. However, it did. It was even better! The captains are very familiar with the waters and the animals that inhabit the bayou. In fact, he knew a gator by her name, touched her with his hands and fed her to keep her babies fat. We even got to touch a baby gator. They sometimes catch them, feed them and release them back out so they have better chances of survival (or so they so). We've went to complete our tour but my boyfriend didn't felt well to go and the staff was extremely friendly and nice, they reschedule for the next day. They also have lot of gators swimming at the dock near to where we enter the boats. Recommend the airboat, the experience seems better than the regular one. read more

This was an amazing tour!! We saw "Winky"the one eyed alligator and then our tour guide Dylan pulled a baby gator out of the water and onto the boat. We learned a lot about the area and swamp. Plus we got to pet the baby gator! They were able to get us on a tour with less than 30 mins notice (some other places had 24 advance reservation policies) Definitely worth going when you visit the area read more
