We did a group order from here at work and I saw poke nachos featured on their front page. When I went to order through their website, I couldn't find them listed anywhere. My coworker ended up calling in and was able to order it, so that worked out. The wonton chips were crunchy and held up well. The poke tasted fresh and not fishy or old, which I always appreciate. Overall it hit the spot. I ended up finding the restaurant on Uber Eats and saw they actually have the poke nachos listed there. I ordered it that way, but noticed there weren't any options to add extra toppings. From the first time we ordered, I remember the seaweed and crab were on the lighter side, so I wish they had an option to add more online. I called to see if I could add extra, but ended up deciding not to, due to pricing differences. When I my order was delivered, they included it for me anyway, which I appreciated. That was really nice of them. The poke nachos were good. I just wish they would add a little more seaweed and crab or at least give the option to add more of it online. We actually ordered food/catering trays to pick up today (Saturday July 25). However, the place was closed despite hours being Monday to Saturday 11am to 8pm. There were no signs or documentation posting if they had an emergency or last minute schedule changes. Additionally, our food was ordered to be ready but they did not call or communicate. Terrible customer service and they did not think about their customers, even if they had an emergency to attend to. Raised in Hawaii, was hoping this place would be a great stop to frequent. L&L has been going downhill for a while. Unfortunately, was disappointed with everything. Number 1 complaint is that they don't use Aloha Soy Sauce, which completely changes the flavor profile of everything. Kalua Pig was bland, under salted, a little dry but was okay. Teri Chicken, were thighs and seasoned with some other kind of soy sauce, you can tell by how light brown they are. They were okay, but a little dry. Mac Salad was pretty decent, best thing on the plate. Rice had too much water so it had poor texture. Worst thing was the spam musubi. Just the shape and the flavor and it was slathered in sauce, you don't need to do this for spam musubi, just marinate for a while and cook it. Overall was really mid. I came here last year. I liked the food and wanted to come back sometime. Fast forward to today, I called in for a pickup order. Both employees, over the phone and at the restaurant seemed like they did not want to be there at all. I went with a lava chicken plate and teri chicken plate. The rice was very mushy as if they added too much water. There was random pieces of beef in my chicken plate and some parts of the chicken appeared to be under cooked. I know chicken thigh meat can be slightly red but this just looks undercooked. My order did not come with any napkins or utensils. Haven't visited this restaurant in a while. We came 45mins before closing. There was only 1 person seated when we arrived. As soon as we ordered, 6 people showed up to place orders. The dining room was closed due to the late time so the orders had to all be "to-go" the staff explained. We ordred: 1 Katsu Chicken Plate Lunch with double rice no mac salad, 1 Teriyaki Beef Plate lunch with mac salad and rice, 1 Two Item Combo with Teriyaki Beef & Katsu Chicken and mac salad and rice, 1 Liliokoi & Peach Lemonade, and 1 Strawberry & Mango Lemonade. Everything was well prepared. I do miss the old way that they used to prepare the teriyaki beef. It used to be filleted, fat stripped, and bite sized chopped perfectly in their delicious glazed teriyaki sauce. Now, it is a semi tenderized, fat laden, and tough whole cut of thin beef. This new version is pretty hard to eat and enjoy. The staff let us know that the Manuela's Malasadas business is also owned by Homestyle Hawaiian, specializing in bakery items. 09/13/25 - ordered through Postmates today and was really disappointed. I ordered the two item combo with teriyaki beef and korean chicken, deep fried spam musubi and a side of kimchi. The teriyaki beef was sooooo tough and was hard to eat. I ended up throwing away more than half of it because it hard to chew. Such a waste. The Korean Chicken was just ok but it had a lot of chewy and fatty pieces, not as good as I remember it to be. The $5 side order of kimchi was just ridiculous.. I can't believe it. They also put it in this container so that sauce was all over the bag by the time it got to me. The spam musubi was good but it didn't come with the sauce I remember it came with. I know it was in stock because my husband had some with his meal. She told me "yeah, we changed the menu." When I pointed out that it was still on the menu, she replied, "yeah, we just haven't updated it yet." She then continued packing up other meals, clearly uninterested in helping me even. If I could leave a zero I would have. I ordered a tray of their lava chicken and sent my son to go pick it up. They gave him a tray of katsu chicken and when he questioned it, the cashier was extremely rude. He was told it was katsu even though the invoice said lava chicken. Well, I was in denial that this place has gone downhill, but it has. We've been ordering from this place for over 6 years, but yesterday was our final time. The plate lunches ordered through uber eats do not allow you to make rice a side dish, the kalua pork was mostly fatty pieces and did not have great flavor, and the shrimp looked delicious but the flavor was all left behind on the shell that you have to remove. And call me picky, but I had a hard time seeing the veining in the shrimp as I took bites (had to remove it-gross). Lastly, the portions have been reduced significantly and the prices have increased. We spent almost $100 to feed a family of 5 take out food, and we still had to come home and make rice (not cool). My wife and I were craving Hawaiian food so we decided after many years to give Homestyle Hwn another try. We walked in to order and there was no Aloha from the young men having a conversation behind the counter. After reviewing the menu my wife asked if she could have the loco moco without the eggs (which in HI is hamburger steak). The young man said no my wife responded okay so the eggs are over easy she said. I ordered my Kalbi plate. She said that we would like water. He said they only have bottled. He asked if it was to go or dine in. We said dine in and asked for a name. Not knowing the drill we stood there in front of the counter. The young man could have told us to have a seat and he'll call us when the order is ready. Never said just grab the bottled water from the case and the utensils and condiments from the counter. (I guess their conversation was more important than showing Aloha in a Hwn Food establishment). They called my wife's name and we got the food. I regret not taking pictures. The food was not good at all my Kalbi was sweet .......way too sweet (enough to make a honeybee choke).The only food that was close to being like Hawaii was the Mac salad. My wife's loco moco wasn't good either the gravy was way too salty....(enough to make someone's blood pressure rise to the 200's). The eggs were cooked well maybe cause the cook broke the yolks (like pan scrambled almost) so no moco in da loco moco! The hamburger patty seemed homemade and tasted not too bad. Now to the ambience. The facility is a little worn because of the age. But whoever painted the walls white recently really doesn't care about the job they did because the black acoustic tiles on the ceiling have the white paint roller marks on it. When the other customers came in not one person was greeted with a smile or any words of welcome. In conclusion, we personally won't be going back even if the owners invited us back. After all that, they informed me they were only accepting cash, so I could only afford one spam musubi. Despite ordering well before others, customers behind me received their full meals while I continued waiting. By the time the restaurant had completely cleared out, I still hadn't received my order. During this time, I could clearly hear the chef taking a personal call and preparing food for someone he knew--he even stepped outside to deliver it--all before I was served my single item. Food was good, however the lady behind the counter was very bothered to get off TikTok and take my order in a completely empty restaurant. This is for the location across from SWC. - Dirty tables, covered in crumbs and stickyness. And not like one or two tables... ALL the tables. The cashier tried to say the varnish is the reason, then halfway wiped all the tables with the same dirty rag and left our table just as sticky. As in , when we picked up our order to leave, we had to peel the plastic bag from the table. My dad, husband, son... all carpenters. Varnish is not sticky ‍. - expired ( per the cashier when I requested some) dessert in the display case - cooks arguing the WHOLE time. Noticeably bad communication between cooks and cashier. ( they're 2 elderly, disgruntled men who should consider retiring) - forgot an item that I ordered, had to ask for it again. - malasadas were cooked in dirty grease that over powered the taste and smell. The outside was mushy/ greasy which means the oil wasn't hot enough. The inside was dry like toast. So either it was frozen too long or the dough was bad ( to be fair, I'm full blooded Portuguese, raised on these things so I could be biased. Because no one cooked better than my Avò. RIP ) - the Portuguese sausage ( Linguiça ) was overcooked and super greasy. (This is a tricky one because it's pork and you can't mess with under cooked pork. But again, this is something I cook regularly so I guess my taste buds just expected something different) - short ribs were almost entirely covered in fat. Maybe, MAYBE 10% meat, and they were so sweet that they might as well been cooked in sugar. - Korean chicken was good enough. My only complaint here is that the presentation didn't match the description on the wall. The wall said covered in sauce. I received dry chicken with sauce on the side. - Mac salad tasted good. I ate it all. But if I'm splitting hairs, way too much mayo. - No shave ice. No pineapple whip (manage expectations on the internet) the pictures I saw online are what prompted my interest to begin with. I love me so good, hole in the wall, mom and pop shop Hawaiian. It really pains me to leave a negative review anywhere but I am dumbfounded by the sheer rudeness of the cooks at this establishment. I ordered a Teri beef meal for my wife and upon receiving the ordered we were unable to actually eat the beef. It was extremely tough and we couldn't cut into it with our knives. We tried simply biting the meat strip directly and the parts we did manage to bite off were very chewy. Honestly this was not the end of the world, we've been here enough times to know that this is not the quality of their food usually. We didn't touch any of sides and left the meal almost untouched. My wife did politely ask if we could please swap it out for chicken instead as it was inedible. The cashier seemed pretty awkward about taking it back to the kitchen, and once he did we loudly heard the cooks in the back trash talking my wife in Spanish, probably assuming that she did not understand.
