What a great surprise! Was intending on going to another place (won't mention) and someone recommended Umai. Had never heard of it, and always looking for good sushi so decided why not. Small little place, but the quality was great! Grabbed a sashimi bento dinner so I could try several items, and also grabbed some Sake and Maguro Nigiri because I wanted to try those separate and was told the Salmon was really good. I should say that the sashimi bento came with 8 pieces which included Sake, Maguro, Toro and Hamachi. Did not disappoint! Salmon was velvety smooth and creamy (so were the other cuts)!! not the biggest pieces, but sufficient. Miso was good, house salad dressing is sesame oil based, and tasty. Tempura batter was light and crunchy, and the california hand roll was packed! As with any good sushi, you should expect to pay a decent price, but it's very worth it. read more

My smallest dog is too clingy and since he can't sit in the dining room with us, who knows when I'll be able to eat there lol. Onto the food itself! My husband enjoyed the generous bento box with California roll. The specialty rolls have a bit more going on than I could enjoy. Rainbow roll: 4/5 stars because there's cooked shrimp on it Salmon roll: 5/5 stars because it's perfect the way it is and the flavor of the fish comes through Tuna roll: 5/5 stars, just as consistent as the salmon roll Sombrero roll: 4.25/5 because the sriracha is a bit overwhelming. If it were sriracha mayo to add a touch of butteriness that didn't compete with the fish, the fresh slices of deboned jalapeño slices on top could work well with the roll. Rocky Manhattan roll: 3.5/5 because many of these more specialty rolls have a little too much going on and the flavors get lost. It could do without the Cajun sauce IMO. Overall, solid! read more

Boy, is this place busy on a Saturday night. We made the mistake of not making reservations, which meant a bit of a wait as inside seating is limited. Restaurant does a lot of take out in addition to its busy sit down service. We were excited to sit and eat. Perhaps, the place was too busy as food took awhile, and was a bit sloppily made. Sushi rolls were standard, but not impressive. We ordered 2 poke bowls and paid extra $4 for the mix of tuna, salmon and yellowtail. Amount of fish was not that great, and 3 of my pieces of yellowtail had the silver skin still on it. Staff was aware, and I asked for a knife to cut it off myself. Overall, probably wouldn't go back with other options in the area. A shame since seems to be a family run business and everyone was really hustling and working hard. read more

My second time here and definitely enjoyed the sushi yet again. My friend and I came in for lunch. The sushi is super fresh and very tasty. The service was good for only one waitress being there. She was so sweet but so busy. So if you're on a time schedule don't come for lunch. It's very cozy and offers a great selection of rolls and fish. We ordered two rolls, two appetizers and a ton of nigiri! The spicy edamame was a fan favorite as well as the spicy scallop nigiri. Nothing we had was anything but delicious. They package the to-go items very neatly, and already assembled (some places put the sauces on the side, and then you end up not knowing which sauce belongs to which roll, ha), so I appreciate it all being ready to eat! I was born and raised in South Florida and my husband is from New England. Needless to say, we are picky when it comes to fish. Umai did not disappoint. Don't let the unassuming ambiance fool you. This place is seriously amazing. We both ranked it among the top three sushi places we've been to. All of the rolls we had were amazing. My personal favorites were the sunflower and the firecracker. Absolutely terrible! Came for a late lunch during the week. Restaurant wasn't busy so figured I'd grab a bite. Hostess/server comes up to me and asks how many. I say 1 and she says "what would you like to drink?" Odd question considering she hadn't sat me yet and I'm at the entrance. Gives me a menu and sits me in an awkward spot between someone at the sushi bar and a table that's seemingly meant for a larger group. As I'm sitting, about 15 min pass. Located in such a beautiful area, eating at Umai Sushi makes it hard to wanna go to any other sushi joint during my stay in McKinney. Service is great, vibe is authentic, inside setup is very cool and modern for a smaller sushi restaurant, and the food tasted fresh and generous. I ordered the classic Rainbow Roll and a King Dragon roll while my coworker also order the Samurai and the Scorpion (which the latter 2 offered a little kick of heat, for you spicy lovers). They were all very delicious and more than satisfying. I also really love their miso soup! Not sure what it was exactly, but it tasted way better than other miso soups I've had before. Our lunch visit saw a good amount of people also coming in for their lunch breaks and post workouts. For lunchtime they got a good amount of business but it didn't take long at all to be seated. Lots of people arriving only affirmed to me the legitimacy of their high yelp ratings. It really is a great new sushi spot in a breathtaking area of McKinney! It took awhile for us to find our Saturday night sushi go to. Found it! Umai is consistently great. I'm not a sushi fan in that I won't eat raw fish, etc. Now my husband has enjoyed sushi in 20+ states and several countries. He's eaten everything but Good Luck Kitty in some places. He wants his sushi spicy as well. Umai may not be a high end restaurant but the sushi is fresh, the rolls are well made and they won't mess up your order. Did I mention that the prices are very reasonable? Yep, that too. My husband picks up our order and reports that the store is clean and well appointed. I actually have several sushi places saved in my bookmarks, but I ultimately went here (my first time) because it was the closest to my house. I was not disappointed! I was so happy, in fact, that I brought my husband there the next night for dinner! We started off with the stuffed jalapeño. The flavors were great; there wasn't a huge amount of cream cheese in them, which I liked.
