Absolutely the worst meal I've ever eaten. The spicy tuna hand rolls, cruncy shrimp roll and the philadelphia roll were essentially inedible. Tasteless rubbish. The ginger salad was nothing more than a pile of iceberg lettuce leaves with a ginger "dressing" scattered about. The rolls were not served with either wasabi or ginger but were brought to the table after asking. The ambiance was lacking and the furnishings dated. Definitely not a good place for date night. Service was acceptable, which is about the best thing we could say about the entire experience. read more

Amazing quality ! Having spent time in Tokyo Japan it's refreshing to have such a close authentic Japanese style restaurant nearby. Hot Saki is amazing. Japanese beer selection on point! Appetizer selection world class and tasty (see photo)! Sushi freshly made with fresh ingredients in the traditional styles. Bento boxes the kids and young children will love ! Habachi grilled selections (without the expensive show) are as worthy as the ones that get the expensive show. Atmosphere quiet and romantic. Haven't been here in 5 years. New owners have really paid attention to detail & created some unexpected delicious dishes including desserts made in-house. In addition, they have a happy hour menu Monday - Thursday ALL DAY. James, our waiter was excellent, attentive & come to find out, part of the family owners who are creating a must visit sushi experience in McKinney. We started with the recommended Brussel sprouts. Not a fan of bs, but all I can say is, I'll be ordering these every visit. My salmon sushi was the best I've had in a long time. Tuna high quality & unagi delicious. Had to have the creme brûlée as James told us, it was made fresh on the day of our visit. It was dee-lish! Light & decedent with a satisfying candied brûlée top. What a great hidden gem of a place for date night, family dinner or take out. We have been twice and the second time, Tiffany, recognized us and remembered our drink order. That is rare today in customer service and something we sincerely appreciate. So far we have tried multiple rolls, a few appetizers, some adult beverages and the onion soup. Everything has been great! When the weather cools off, we are planning to give some hibachi items a try too. One of the nice things about the menu is that we can bring our non-sushi-eating friends and they would find yummy dishes as well. Zen is now on our date night rotation and we plan to bring the family soon. Keep up the great food and customer service! read more

Miso soup was good tasting and good portion size. The Monster Roll had a lot of rolls and also good. Water Lilly roll was more yummy and rolls were big. We also had the Tempura Green Tea Ice Cream w Poundcake and it was also lovely. The ambiance was chill with low lighting and instrumental music. Service was also quick and she was polite. This place is unlike any sushi restaurant Ive been to. It honestly is zen-ful from the decor, service and ambience. I felt like I was at a spa eating sushi. The rolls we got were the Samurai and the volcano roll. The volcano roll was special there were fried crawfish on top and the crunchy things. Defy get that! But we loved both rolls. We also had the steak teriyaki hibachi, beef fried rice, pork Katsu, all were very solid!! The hibachi unlike other places, was cooked on a grill and not a pan. You can taste it! Will come here again even though the prices are a little steep compared to other sushi restaurants. read more

I didn't even realize this place was in my neighborhood, so I was excited to try a sushi place so close. The restaurant has a great sushi bar atmosphere and the staff is very friendly. I got the beef teriyaki bento box to go, and it came out very quickly. I was a little shocked at the price. Mostly my fault because online I didn't realize I was looking at the lunch menu. With tip though it was almost $30 and not worth that price. The tempura had almost no flavor at all. The beef teriyaki had a really good flavor but the beef was so tough like chewing on leather. The wontons were just ok. I will say though I forgot how California rolls were supposed to taste until I had this one. California rolls are everywhere and cheap and not exciting, but this one was amazing. I'd actually try this restaurant again just based on how good the roll was. I'd only be ordering sushi though because that seems to be what they do best! read more

I have eaten there a few times. I like the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The menu is very extensive. Mi only complains are that the nigiri sushi and the rolls do not seem to have been freshly made. The fish seemed dehydrated and the sushi-rice rather stale. They weren't bad, but I prefer sushi and rolls made freshly to order. The quality of the food and the service are good. Sub-par sushi at high prices. I don't understand the ratings on this place...maybe because it's all first-timers or people who haven't had better. My bf got three types of sashimi which were 14.50 each and I noticed the sushi order form did not list how many pieces or rolls you get. Never seen a sushi place hide that before. He said his sashimi was fine. I got sushi combo A (27.00) and hot tea. The hot tea was more like hot water. I waited 20min more to get my meal. The combo (which is one of two to choose from--no varieties or sushi/sashimi combos here) came with miso soup and salad. The miso soup was water, flavorless and had microscopic bits of tofu and seaweed. No expense spared on those packets I see. The salad was too gross looking to eat. I like ginger dressing but what they serve up over browned iceberg lettuce looked like vomit. The sushi itself was fine, more like take out/supermarket grade and I left a piece of shrimp behind that had black edges on it. The decor is nice, the service was ok and it's a suburban family type place but not a fancy place that you would want to have a special occasion at (which we were doing). The bill was absurd. We felt ripped off. Next time we'll just stick to the Plano or Garland area for better quality. Wasabi on El Dorado is far better and that's not an amazing place either but the quality is good there. read more

We've ordered from Zen S&G 3 times. The first two where pretty good. I grade on a curve considering all Sushi in Texas has to be frozen/defrosted by law. However, the last time was not great. The first time I had sushi was on a cruise and every since then when I buy sushi it is normally from Market Street. My husband and kids won't eat it so if I want it, I have to go it alone. I got the rolls combo off of the lunch menu, it had chicken tempura rolls and spicy salmon rolls. They were so flavorful, fresh, and they hit the spot. My sons ordered the chicken fried rice. They gobbled it down. They liked it so much they wanted to order another plate to take home. My husband and I have driven past Zen Sushi but we were hesitant trying a sushi place in a hidden, empty strip mall. We were pleasantly surprised. We started with the house salad which comes with the standard ginger dressing. Always a light, refreshing choice to accompany Japanese fare. My husband had the Udon noodle with tempura shrimp and vegetables. He was completely impressed by the simplicity and freshness of his meal. The calamari came with salsa instead of marinara. The Alaskan roll was delicious. The hole in one roll had baked, shredded salmon so the texture was strange and the spicy mayo tasted different than what I'm used to. The paradise roll had watery eel sauce that didn't have much flavor. I would only recommend the Alaskan roll out of the three. The server was nice but thought we had ordered shrimp fried rice for the table but it was just for my dad. She started scooping it into smaller bowls for all of us. ($9.99 /person for lunch) If a AYCE diner wants to try any of the specials, they only pay half the cost of that particular special. My wife ordered a bulgogi bowl for us to try in addition to her AYCE order. The AYCE dinner also includes soup & salad. You really can't beat this awesome deal, especially when the sushi is not overwhelmed with the rice. In our opinion, the sushi here far surpasses Sushi Shack's in Plano. Does not look like much from the road but it is totally different than what I expected. The food was absolutely great and generous portions. Great selection from the bar, including great unfiltered Sake. A must try for Stonebridge residences. This particular chef is definitely an upgrade from the last and apparently came from Showgun's on 75, another great sushi restaurant. We eat at one or the other at least once a week since coming to Mckinney a long time ago. They are enough different that you get a great variety that the other does not serve. read more

I was sort of leary giving Zen Sushi & Grill a shot due to the reviews but I was craving something Japanese. Looked at Zen's menu and was impressed with their menu items. I thought what the heck and decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did. We started with the Edamame which was salted just right. I had the house salad with their ginger house dressing, oh so good. Same with their Gyoza, filling was good & their sauce was tasty. Husband ordered the simple California Rolls which he thought unique because it was all mixed instead of individual layers. He got the Chicken Katsu which he really happy with it. Chicken was tender and breaded just right and the Katsu sauce was tangy which he loved. I got the Kiraku Vegetable Fried Rice. It had white, black & brown rice. This is now my favorite fried rice by far. Now one thing I will agree with most of the reviews with and why they are getting 4 stars instead of 5 is their prices. As much as I loved their food I do not believe the food matches the prices. Unfortunately the prices will cause us not to visit all that often. Bummed for sure but I'm glad I gave it a try regardless of the reviews. Sometimes it's worth being the odd one out. read more

Ok....I'm going with a three on this because it was clean, service was friendly and prompt and the Tower tasted fine. But that's the problem: At $17, an Ahi tower should taste better than fine. Blue Fish charges less than that. Kobe charges less than that. Pretty much every place around charges less than that. Did you see the picture? This one is a lot smaller too. So no, it's by far way overpriced for a lot less. I was expecting the ingredients to be better then, to make up for the cost. Nope. Same imitation crab. Same okay Ahi tuna. A lot of sauce though. Overall, it wasn't anything I couldn't get at any other sushi joint in Mckinney or Frisco or Plano and that's my issue. If you are going to charge almost $5 more in some cases for a dish, by God it had better be amazing. This was not. The miso soup was gritty, not that silky tofu texture you crave. The iced tea was great. But at 2.50 for soup and $2 for a glass of tea that was never refilled (party of 9 came in and my check got dropped off halfway through my meal since they got busy) paying $23 bucks for mediocre sushi isn't cool. I debated giving it three stars, but because they were friendly I'm going to roll with it. I have zero clue why anyone would give it five.
