I was craving Sushi last night for dinner and decided to stop by Umaii because it is near my house, and I have always enjoyed their sushi, miso soup, and edamame. I have never tried their Thai dishes so I cannot comment on those, however we were disappointed in the service tonight because of two reasons. 1. We came here about 6 months ago for our 1 year anniversary and were seated over by the door in the back booths. It took a server 10-15 minutes to acknowledge we were there. And they only acknowledged us after we asked another server that we would like waters. Granted they were busy, and our server was the bartender, so we ordered everything when they arrived at the table to get our drink orders. We enjoyed the food and drinks and hoped it wouldn't happen again. 2. Last night, it also took 10-15 minutes (could've been longer) for a server to pop by to grab our drink orders, and when they do come to the table it was stated there was a mix-up with the hostess. Generally, I do not have an issue with this because things happen and they were seating a few tables when we were seated. However, this exact thing happened the last time we visited. And, I made eye contact with our server multiple times before they came to the table. We didn't have any waters and it was obvious we hadn't been served yet. I know servers are busy, but I made eye contact with multiple servers in the restaurant trying to get them to notice we hadn't been served. We were getting ready to walk out when the server arrived. Dinner here with friends on January 3, 2023. Enjoyed a variety of appetizer dishes including Larb Gai, Tuna Takati, Kano Jeeb, and Yum Grilled Beef. I am very inexperienced with Thai cuisine. The Larb Gai was delicious but the tuna in the Tuna Takati was leathery. My main was a very large serving of Pad See Ew with shrimp that was tasty but the noodles quickly became gummy. We ordered sooo much food 2 types of sushi which was soo good. Pad Thai: very good Pineapple chicken fried rice. Tooo salty 2 Fried fish: I thought it would've been the whole fish but it's in pieces and no flavor and too salty Didn't finish 2 Papaya salad: nice spice but ok 2 chicken Massuman curry: again tooo salty. I'm torn on whether or not to give this place a 3 or a 5. First, I love the way they incorporate peppercorns into their meals. Something about whole peppercorns give a nice spicy but fresh taste. Sometimes I think the dishes are a bit oily. But they also have some great duck dishes and they make strong drinks. Sushi is good. And their menu is diverse but not overwhelmingly big, which is nice. I've lived in many places and have had a ton of Thia food. I have many favorites but when you go to a new place, I hit my old fovorates. I had 3 thinks for lunch. 1-Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup). Only in the south would a lightly spicy soup be sweet. Also it should have lime or something else to make is A little vinigery. This had neither. It was very boring and I would never order this again. 2-Chicken Pad Thai. It also was very boring but better than the soup. 3 - Tuna roll. It was very good. The people were very nice but I'm concerned most of the menu is not up to par compared to our major cities. I'm glad I went alone, my wife would have hated it. read more

I went here for lunch with my mom yesterday. I want to be transparent so I will say I have almost zero experience with sushi. In fact, I've only had California rolls from Harris Teeter, which I love. So when it comes to sushi, I'm a noob. But we were spending the morning together and we were feeling brave so to the sushi place we went! We walked in and were seated right away. Our server was really sweet when we told her we never had raw sushi before. She showed us on the menu what her suggestions would be for beginners. We settled on, of course, the California roll and a raw tuna roll. We also shared the Tom Yum Noodle Soup. I loved the California roll. It was super vinegary with that lovely crab taste. The tuna roll was good too. The texture was new to me, but the taste was good. It wasn't as vinegary as the California roll and had more of a sesame oil taste. Of course, I can't compare it to another sushi place but we had a great time. I'm looking forward to going back and trying new rolls and working myself up to nigori and maybe even sashimi. The soup was good as well. We shared a large bowl and it was really hard to serve into smaller bowls at the table. I would of rather it been brought to us already in smaller bowls. We live close by and so have tried this place a few times. Each time, it's been simply okay. Not horrible, but not good by Thai food standards. But on our latest take out order, we tried three new dishes and for $55 we received truly subpar food. The pad thai had no visible bean sprouts and though the sauce tasted okay it was simply an enormous pile of noodles with little else. The drunken noodle had noodles that were so overcooked they were super mushy and almost inedible. The other dish we got was fine, but nothing special. My dining partner almost ate none of the food. Opted to stop and try it out. The weather was miserable and it was not crowded, got seat immediately, opted for the sushi bar. It's a cute restaurant with seating outside under an awning too. Large menu with multiple options, we came to try the sushi. Received our menus quickly , along with our waters. Started out with TNT Shrimp, five deep fried shrimp with scallions in a spicy house sauce. It arrive hot and spicy , with a garnish of rings of beets and a flower from carrots, it was wonderful. Followed by Spicy Tuna Handrolls; they are huge , filled with spicy tuna and crunchy cucumber. Delightful, but very spicy! We like to have fried rice with our sushi, found a Kids Fried Rice side. Perfect sized portion for two. Lastly we ordered a Dancing Shrimp Roll. Shrimp tempura and crab, topped with mango and avocado. Decided to venture from my go-to Southern Thai and go to the other end of the country. We started with TNT shrimp- breaded shrimp and we could drink the sauce! The pad thai was recommended, so we ordered that and also the Umaii beef. The Umaii beef-OMG so tender. The beef has layers of flavor. Pad thai has plenty of sauce and a good portion of shrimp. We were treated very well by server Celeste and Mica. Ended the meal with a slice of coconut cake- the cake was so moist and frosting had just enough coconut and sweetness. I didn't expect much because this place wasn't very busy, but I ordered the drunken noodles with beef and I must say it was probably the best drunken noodles I've ever eaten! The meat was tender and the flavor was spot on. I was nice that it was only $8 but was a HUGE plate of food! I'll definitely be back when I am in the area. read more

Second time trying Umaii and all I can say is WOW! Sushi was super fresh and absolutely delicious! The pad thai, is now my favorite in town...edging out Indochine and Szechuan 132. Poke bowl was good as well, that could have been a tad better (I'm used to North Shore" style poke bowls). And the coconut cream pie... banging!! A friend recommended we meet here for our date night. Our server was fabulous, not overbearing but there when we needed her. She understood we were there to catch up and never made us feel rushed. I started with a margarita with a sugar rim, which was delicious, though perhaps a bit weak. My friend ordered the cosmo - first one wasn't quite right but after asking them to tweak it a bit the rest were fabulous. I went with the shrimp tempura roll and a spicy tuna roll. I usually LOVE tempura rolls but was very disappointed with this one. The flavors were alright but whoever made the roll made it unnecessarily large - too big to eat in a reasonable bite. (Picture included.) on the flip side, I absolutely loved the spicy tuna roll so I think they just need to work on their consistency. My friend went with the pad thai and loves it. The fish was fresh and delicious, the place is cute, service was great. The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars was the sushi rice. It was over cooked and mushy. One rice grain was molded into the other and that's not supposed to happen. Sushi chefs take pride in their rice and usually nerve serve mushy rice. I will return bc the sushi was good. read more

Wow! Ok so I have to say...after a sorely disappointing first experience here we returned and I am SO glad we did. Our meal was great and our server, Max, made the night. I have a gluten allergy and Max was so accommodating even bringing me a small dish of gluten free soy sauce without me even asking. I had the house salad with ginger dressing and it was great- simple, tasty and refreshing. My husband had crunchy spicy tuna roll and it was exactly as expected- fresh and tasty. For dinner I had chicken drunken noodle and it was great! Good flavor, fresh tasting and hot. We love spice so Max brought some hot chili oil for us to add to our food and it was perfect. My husband had the chicken red curry and it with the addition of the hot chili it was perfect - fresh, full of great veggies etc. We will definitely return.
