    Umami Express: packaged well

If I were to have a checklist of the meal I'd want to marry, this checked off my boxes. vegan gluten free healthy delicious I cannot praise how much this hit the spot. Fresh ingredients and quickly made. Ordered the organic Tofu Greens Bowl, added tofu, avocado with a garlic sesame soy sauce dressing.

Umami Express (E 12 St.) is serving up amazing food bowls that are new and interesting. DoorDash was offering 20%-off to try this new ghost kitchen in Oakland, so I placed an order for the "Protein Lover Rice & Cabbage Bowl" w/ added pickled onion and garlic sesame dressing. Protein Lover Rice & Cabbage Bowl, $14.95, Grade(5/5): just plain good ingredients, mixed together to create a good meal. I actually felt good after I ate it! It's not like poke bowl or a bowl where they put some toppings on top of a deep base of rice. With a Umami bowl you add dressing and stir it up to create a balanced blend of veggies, meat and rice. It's like a savory salad. It's a different eating experience. Umami or savoriness, is one of the five basic tastes. You have to try it.... ------------------------------------ Umami Express is a ghost kitchen at the Oakland food hall in East Oakland. Parking can be limited, so delivery may be a good choice.

Great place to get your protein and veggies in for the day, wish I asked for more sauce, but overall amazing taste is amazing on the chicken bowl

I ordered through Uber Eats and got the organic tofu greens bowl with lemon garlic soy sauce and added the signature chili oil. It is rare that I find a meal in the bay that makes me feel healthy and light after I eat. This food makes me feel that way. If I hadn't have added the chili crisp it wouldn't have been oily at all. The lettuce was fresh and crispy and not wilted by the tofu. The portion was big enough to share between two for a small lunch which I appreciate with the out of control Bay Area prices. When I order again, I'll order a different sauce than the lemon sauce which tasted more fusion to me than Asian. My only major critique was the tofu was under-seasoned and I wished they used compostable/more sustainable food containers.

Very tasty! I got 2 tofu/mushroom rice bowls and 1 port shoulder bowl. It was delicious! The cooked food and the optional sauces and chili garlic are so bomb. Great for any meal time i think, because its a lot of food but its managable and will leave you not feeling too heavy. Would eat again :)

We had been to Tarocco for lunch and figured we would ask them for a quote, too. My daughter warned me that the owner is trying to be an "influencer" on Instagram and posts photos of herself in crop Tops so I should beware, but that's fine by me. We called to get a quote and had a discussion. After we gave the owner all of our information, she told us she wouldn't give us a quote unless we came in person (?!) Which is weird because this isn't how restaurants work. Typically for events restaurants will give you a quote via phone or email for the sake of convenience. We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!! Apparently you're not allowed to ask this restaurant how much they charge for events unless you're face to face. This lady has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. We took our business elsewhere and recommend that you do, too.

There's quite a love story behind the making of this bread and business. You get a glimpse of it with every bite. Toasting is necessary. I made the mistake of eating the bread straight from the bag and regretted that I had bought very expensive sawdust. I tried different toasting times to see how the texture and taste evolved and what a revelation! I prefer lightly toasting the sandwich rolls intact so that the center remains slightly cool to the touch. Over-toasting makes the rolls mushy on the inside and muddles the flavors. I then dip in olive oil. Srsly hvnly. Mother's Market, my closest option in Socal, carries an excellent selection.

I'm not sure what kind of GF bread some people are used to, but this just was not good. That's an understatement! The loaf size is tiny and very dense. Every time I sliced it, my knife ended up coated in gummy residue, which makes me think it was undercooked and possibly under-proofed. It also absolutely requires toasting. Eating it straight from the bag is not possible. The cinnamon raisin bread had maybe 1-2 raisins per slice. What frustrates me most is that I spent $85 for 6 loaves (including shipping), and I ended up throwing every single one away. Such a waste and such a disappointment. For now, I'll be sticking with Carbonaut GF bread until I finally find a gluten-free loaf that actually delivers on texture and flavor. BTW: the photo shows a slice of Carbonaut GF next to the Bread Seriously loaf for comparison.

I was so impressed by the freshness and quality of the food, especially since everything was gluten free. My boyfriend and I both chose the "build your own bowl" option. In my bowl, I chose: - cauliflower rice - crispy chicken - charred broccoli - brussels sprouts - ponzu ginger sauce First of all, my bowl was phenomenal. Every single element was delicious and flavorful. I highly recommend everything I got. It was my perfect bowl! My boyfriend chose: - jasmine rice - paprika chicken - charred broccoli - chimichurri mushrooms - pickled onions - jalapeño lime dressing His bowl was also so delicious. I thought that the chicken tasted like a better, higher quality chipotle chicken. The ingredients were so fresh tasting, and the jalapeño lime dressing was so good. I also wanted to give their desserts a try, so we went with the dark chocolate chip cookie. This was the most "gluten free" tasting thing out of everything we got. The texture of the cookie was unlike normal cookies, but that didn't bother us much. The cookie itself was more on the "less-sweet" side, and was packed with rich dark chocolate. While not exactly my thing, it's worth a try for true dark chocolate lovers! Overall, I was so impressed by kitava. I also like that this location has longer business hours than most GF bakeries and serves breakfast all day as well as lunch items. Another big plus is the allergens are clearly labeled online and in the shop. However, I've had negative experiences here on 3 consecutive visits. I go here for my gluten free partner. On one of the visits, I ordered a stuffed bagel and waited for 15 minutes before going back up to the counter to say that I still hadn't received my order. It was busy, but by this time, the person standing at the counter had nothing to do. They apologized and made my order then, but the experience left a bad impression on me since it was my first time eating inside the bakery. On my next visit, I ordered several items inside the bakery to take home with my pickup order and received a pain de chocolate instead of a cinnamon donut, which I didn't notice until I got home. The pain de chocolate costs more and my partner wasn't able to share it with me due to a soy allergy. I suppose I could've been paying more attention, but these items don't have similar names at all, so I was not expecting this error. That said, I made a mental note to pay more attention when ordering inside the bake shop for future orders. On my next visit, I ordered a mocha cupcake and berry muffin, but the cashier rang me up for a hand pie instead of a muffin. Again, the hand pie was more expensive. This time I caught it and asked for it to be corrected. I work in customer service and I act with kindness when mistakes are made because we're only human. However, I believe 3 negative experiences in a row shows a pattern and warrants some attention. I will continue to patronize this business due to the reasons I mentioned at the beginning of this review, but I will now have to be vigilant in ensuring that I receive the correct items and am charged the correct amount. This of course is not ideal. I hope service improves.

He was known for introducing momos to the Bay Area dining scene back when he worked at the legendary Stars restaurant. The new generation of owners are apparently committed to combat climate change and felt a critical obligation to adapt the business model to mitigate global warming. My objectives were not as lofty. I just know eating vegan makes me feel less guilty about my next In-n-Out burger. After finishing a consciousness-raising gym workout, I had some time for a quick lunch before catching my bus. I could tell how chill the space was the moment I walked in. The staff was so calm it was unnerving. I was already being an anarchist and asked if they made an iced coffee. After a momentary hesitation, he came back with a $4 Iced Coffee with a tiny pitcher of extra coffee (Photo 8). It was quite refreshing with a layer of foam on top. I then had the unmitigated gall to ask if they did half-orders of their vegan momos. This time the chef couldn't do it, so I ordered the $15.99 Tofu Curry (Photo 9). I turned out to be the wise choice because it came out pretty quick. Medium soft cubes of tofu were mixed with fresh spinach in a tasty curry with spinach. It came with just enough basmati rice to sop up the curry. It definitely motivated me to come back for the momos and other Tibetan delicacies.
