Why 5 stars? Because it's easy to find something you like here. --- --- --- The menu at Umami is enormous. It seems to cover about half of Asian cuisine - think: Cheesecake Factory, in terms of the menu size. A perfect illustration of this is what my wife and I ordered: 1) Kalbi (Korean Short Ribs) 2) Hibachi chicken and scallops 3) Shaggy Dog Sushi Roll All very different things that you would normally only get at very different restaurants. But Umami had them all and a lot more to choose from. Everything ranged from good to very good (4-4.5 stars) but I'm rounding up for the variety available and for the convenience of being one of the closer restaurants to my house.

The food was amazing and delicious. And the service was absolutely fantastic. The snow cone was so nice and cooked so well. I'm definitely coming back here

The food was good. The fried dumplings real soft, like they'd been sat out for a long time, but the umami poppers were delicious though! The waitress was real nice but she didn't talk which was a strange experience, just nodded her head in agreement, or pointed to our drinks, etc. They were able to customize our sushi order and it was a good time. They had great music!

    Chicken Korean Spicy Ramen

Amazing experience! From the staff to its owner. I felt like I was at a friend's house. The music and atmosphere was awesome. So smooth and very welcoming. The food was served timely and the owner even treated us to taste some authentic Korean sushi. I will be definitely be coming back.

The sushi is always delicious and consistent in taste and size! For such a cheap price, these rolls are huge! Must try: Eddie's #1 Bubba crunch add cream cheese & jalapeños Avocado shrimp roll add mango

Food is super fresh and so delicious. lots of fish in the rolls, not a lot of rice filler. The service is always great and I love the atmosphere, very posh but unpretentious!

I haven't been to Unami in several years. I am sorry I had not done so. The sushi is absolutely amazing. Spicy tuna is exactly that...SPICY! Very flavorful and fresh options. Eddie has a fantastic mind for sushi and his creations are incredible. Try the sake unagi with truffle oil and roasted garlic. The rolls are huge and there are so many to choose from. The cougar roll is a spicy tuna topped with seared peppercorn tuna. It's amazing. The place has a family feel and everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. I'll make up for my absence by returning many times soon.

    Shaggy Roll

Shaggy Roll was amazing!! Yaki Udon was a little salty but still good! I think I paid an extra $2 for the steak & $3 for the shrimp (something like that) but to pay extra for the protein, I wish there was a little bit more.

Very mediocre sushi. Low quality. Had a variety of rolls, sushi and nigiri and nothing was particularly good. Would not return.

This one I wasn't quite sure when I went there first. So that's why I wanted to wait until I came back. But with sushi one bad fish or experience ruins the whole experience. So here are my pros and cons: Pros- pretty interior -nice waiter Jimmy -things came out pretty fast -$20.95 for lunch ayce -salmon is good n fresh -hand rolls were good -shrimp tempura is good -courteous and seemingly friendly waitstaff -tuna wasn't bad for an Ayce place -unlimited drinks -ample parking -rolls aren't bad esp those with less rice -crab and shrimp cooked items wasn't bad if it wasn't bc of the rice Cons- young waitstaff most unprofessional -80% of waitstaff have AirPods in their ears and laughing in groups while not working (not Jimmy) -found a hair in our sushi (ahh no no gross) -too large rice in sushi -not age tofu -tonkatsu ramen was funky -forgot our miso soup -ice cream didn't taste like green tea or red bean -the rice wasn't the best which messes with the whole sushi experience -white fish was so fishy (tilapia??) -cut was wrong on some fish bc it was tendony -not consistent quality even with different sushi masa places Think will pass on this location next time we are in town~there are better sushi masa's in sugarland and elsewhere but thanks Jimmy for serving us well!

The ambiance was top tier - which I wasn't expecting. You can tell a lot of locals dine here. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The menu is quite extensive. However my five year did enjoy a plate of garlic noodles with chopsticks- she is a pro at this point. Yes, they have chopstick helpers for beginners. As for the adults, I had the the Lychee martini (cold and refreshing), spicy soup, two hand rolls (tuna and yellow tail). My husband ordered the Salmon hibachi, and the miso soup (which was fantastic). I will definitely be ordering this next time. He also ordered a specialty roll - don't ask me which one. I can't remember - it was deep fried and he was happy with it. Overall we had a lovely experience here. I look forward to coming back here

The Maki lunch special comes with 2 rolls, soup and salad. The soups and salad were a generous side, definitely more than you'd would get with a bento box. The salad was fresh and had the usual creamy ginger Japanese dressing, delish. For the maki bowls, they were a nice size, and are actually the normal sized rolls you would get from the menu for a spicy salmon and eel roll. I thought for price would be simple hand rolls with just fish and rice and wrapper, but these had cucumber or avocado, sauces and nicely filled. Deliscious eel, spicy salmon had a surprisingly different delicious flavor to it and nice kick. For the spicy miso ramen, it's actually their original tonkotsu with miso and spiciness mixed in. The waitress recommended as the best flavor and although I haven't tried any of their others, it did have nice flavor. Creamy, with layers of flavor and a nice mouth feel that coated your tongue with umami. I am a spicy fanatic, so for me wasn't very spicy, but with chili oil available on the table I could increase the spicy profile. The nice thing here is the ramen toppings aren't all extra so a great deal. Came with chashu, 2 pieces, one on top had been fried with an excellent char and crunchiness to it, especially since the crunchy garlic was on top. Also for toppings were corn, bamboo shoots, nori, rice cakes, and half a boiled egg so no nickel and dime for toppings here . Fast and attentive service so if trying to get in and out on your lunch break, no problem. Quaint, small venue in shopping strip. Quiet though so nice to have conversation with your lunch date. I would recommend and definitely go again

But later in the meal I did hear her talking in the back with a man in Chinese about how a customer was complaining about a small bone in l their food. Guess she doesn't know I speak Chinese. At the end of the meal, I asked our waitress if she was the owner. She said no, quickly followed by a "the owner is not here today". Then I asked whether the owner was Chinese. Super duper long pause, followed by a soft spoken yes. Well, my favorite place in Memphis is also Chinese owned. I think many of the Japanese restaurants are. Ah well.

However, there were very few bean sprouts, but plenty of basil. There was such a small portion of the rice noodles. When I placed my door dash order I noticed that there was an option to add extra noodles for $4. Extra veggies (bean sprouts, lime, jalapeño and basil) is $3. That's on top of already paying $21 for the large Pho because I add "extra beef ball" that is $4. And this round, there was a huge chunk of gristle in a piece of the meatball. The brisket was also fatty and had hard pieces that cannot be eaten. It is frustrating that they reduce the portion and charge you extra to actually get the portion you're paying for. As takeout, we expected better timeliness on our food coming out and ended up waiting about 30 minutes (after asking the workers twice) for everything to arrive. Other than the popcorn chicken, everything else is a food that can be assembled right at the front-- yet we saw none of that happening for a really long time. We're viet-- we know how spring rolls and banh mi are made and these are very simple, fast foods to assemble. There seemed to be only three workers in the front but were scattered and walking around without clear direction of what they needed to do. Also, they ran out of receipt paper but didn't tell us anything about what our order number was until we had to go in the front to ask after a while of our food not coming out. When we asked a second time about the status of our order they finally started on making our milk tea. As for the spring rolls, i could tell the person assembling them might be on the newer side since she was rolling and wrapping a little slowly. However, i was disappointed that when i opened my order, the rice paper wasn't even wrapped all the way around and ingredients spilled all over. it was quite a messy lunch for the amount of time we waited. ALSO, they didn't have my peanut sauce. The food was genuinely very good and i'm decently satisfied with the food quality, but I'm pretty upset about the lack of attention put into a meal that my family and I were waiting all this time on. especially since there was so little customers in the store at the time. Note for the workers that typically takeout orders should be one of the quicker orders to come out. we were heading to the airport and came in to a spring rolls place expecting a quick and simple lunch to bring in. I recommend coming for the quality ingredients and food. it was enjoyable and not bad if you want authentic Viet. However, you might also have to expect supppper slow service and workers that won't really pay attention to you unless you speak up.
