I recently tried this sushi restaurant for the first time and wanted to share my thoughts. I ordered some Miso Soup, a Beef appetizer, Escolar sushi, Salmon sushi, and the Pink Lady Roll. Overall, the food was decent. The Miso Soup was good, but the Beef appetizer didn't meet my expectations. It was overcooked, and the pieces were a bit tough. However, the sauce was tasty, and the dish looked nice on the plate. The Escolar and Salmon sushi were presented beautifully. They were cut well and of a good size. Unfortunately, the Pink Lady Roll didn't meet my expectations. The crab was chopped so finely that I could barely taste it, and I found it hard to find the avocado and mango as well. My husband ordered sashimi with Tuna, Red Clam, and Yellowtail. The presentation was impressive, and he enjoyed every piece. He said everything tasted great! Our server, Victor, was excellent. He was very friendly and attentive to his customers' needs. I never had to ask for a refill, and he frequently checked in on us. You can ask for him from Thursday to Sunday. Just call for his work schedule. The restaurant is clean, relaxing, and you can converse normally without speaking loudly. We tried some of the appetizers such as the eggrolls, the veggie buns, and the salt and pepper tofu (which I especially recommend) as well as a variety of sushi. My wife suggested we try it because I love sushi and she will tolerate something cooked of Asian heritage. This was our second visit. Never seems to be crowded, but always promptly greeted by the same young lady who does it all! Hostess, waitress and server. How this is so well rated? I don't understand it. Ambience is uncomfortable, food is terrible, and service is subpar. The fried calamari is so rubbery, it is hard to chew and the sauce has no flavor. The wasabi has not one ounce of heat (and flavor? Also non-existent). The cooked sushi roll I revived was sickly sweet with eel sauce (why would that be the goal??)- don't get me wrong, I love eel sauce normally, this was like maple syrup. Additionally, our server just kept rapidly clearing food off of the table at an uncomfortably fast pace. A friend of mine recently recommended this spot to me; he enjoyed their sushi and appreciated their freshness. I can trust his word now hahaha We got their sushi boat, recommended by our server/owner himself (Tommy). Wow! We were stunned. My absolute favorite obviously was the salmon still; however, the toro amazed us. I didn't get a single taste of fishiness, which is hard to come by - especially when you order only sashimi!!! We got the one of only 2 sake bottles from Japan that they had - Ichinokura tarusake. It had such a crystal clear and crisp taste. My favorite still remains the Drunkin' Whale and Snow Maiden, though. The ambiance was cute and a good spot to go for a casual date or friends get-together. The absolute best sushi I have had in this area. Hands down. Unfortunately I did not take any pics on our first trip to Kyu, but we will be back very soon to update this review. Fresh fish! Great selection! My favorite roll was the 1488 roll, but seriously everything we tried was delicious. The ambiance is nice, and the restaurant was quiet when we dined near opening time on a Saturday. I found the pricing to be very fair and the menu was larger than most sushi places around. Our waiter offered suggestions and checked on us frequently. Both dumplings were tasty and flavorful not gummy or tough. We then ordered the energy roll, the fantasy roll, the dragon roll, the Philadelphia, the soho, the energy roll. All were fresh, tasty and wonderful Tonight we ordered the dragon eggs appetizer and Yakitori. Both were very good. For sushi we ordered the Mexican roll a bit of jalapeño gave it a little kick. The Texas roll was flavorful. We then had the shaggy dog, the cypress, the crystal, and the energy. Each roll is as good as the next or the last. All of it is so flavorful with good bite and burst of flavor. I mean dare I say this is the best sushi I've had in all this area in all the years I've been visiting and trying different places. I actually have never gone back a second time to any of them. This is definitely a first, second and not last. They have a a drink menu that includes a variety of beers, wines and mixed drinks. Kyu is one of the top sashimi restaurants in town, i have been here a few times, they never disappoint, whether you enjoy sushi, sashimi, or even udon noodle soup, they have plenty of options to choose from. Tonight we ordered their nabeyaki udon soup, mixed sashimi boat with smoked salmon, hamachi, super white tuna, king salmon plus pepper tuna which was brought on the side. For drinks, we ordered their hot tea, both the green tea and the jasmine tea, brown sugar milk tea plus a coke. Finally, I love their real wasabi, this is the only sushi place in Houston, conroe or even the woodlands that has real wasabi, everyone else uses the wasabi paste, at only $5 it is well worth it. I've been bringing friends and family here since it opened. A position recently opened up, and I've worked here for a few months now, so I can say with certainty that Kyu is one of the best sushi restaurants in town. I watch it get made fresh to order every day. Even as somebody who cannot eat fish, it is a deeply mouth-watering experience. Not a huge variety of meatless entree options (although there are quite a few rice- and tofu-based dishes, as well as a couple of vegetarian "sushi" rolls), but my friends and family say that their meat- and fish-based foods are phenomenal. Everything is fresh and reasonably priced, especially for the quality of the food. Super inviting lighting and atmosphere - I have a sensory aversion to light, and can work hours-long shifts here without becoming overloaded. The server was wonderful, I was also able to make substitutions to sushi rolls with ease. The restraint has the lights dimmed very low with subtle music - definitely relaxing after a long days work. I do recommend being specific when asking for certain Togo containers. Some menu items are pretty juicy (yummy), but this can also lead to spillage! Therefore, we had to ask the server to refer to their notes as to what each rolls were included for the happy hour and what the ingredients were. It was super awkward and felt like we were being overly time consuming. The sushi was ok...some effort with the presentation. Probably better than I could put together, but not where I felt extra tipping should be an option for the end result. The rolls weren't as tight or cut as clean as quality places that ask the same $14-$20 for their rolls. Why 4 stars? Because the yakiudon was the redeeming aspect. --- --- --- I have wanted to try Kyu for a while now and we finally made it over here for takeout. We ordered a bunch of things: ramen, sushi and I wanted to try the yakiudon. Full disclosure, I had never heard of yakiudon prior to seeing it on this menu and looking it up, but I was sold. It was basically described as teriyaki with udon noodles. I didn't really need much more information beyond that. And the best part is that it was about as great as it sounded in the description. I would definitely order this again on a second visit. The issue is that we were pretty unimpressed with everything else. The sushi was just okay - we tried the kyoto and the kyu rolls. Between the wife and I, we each liked (the opposite) one more, which worked out for sharing purposes, but weren't super impressed with either one. But the worst part of our meal was the ramen. My wife was craving it, but we really disliked Kyu's version. She could only stand a few bites and then threw the rest out. The next day, we were driving by a highly rated ramen restaurant and I suggested that we go in and make up for what we tried the night before, but she said Kyu kind of ruined it for her. First impressions of a place are everything and Kyu definitely had its own character. I went in the restaurant around 11ish before the lunch rush usually hits and found myself on a nice spot on the Sushi Bar counter. Everything was really clean and well put together. The dishes that I was recommended and served were an experience that definitely has to be had. The staff was very attentive and caring and took really good care of me, checking on me and always making sure that I was happy with the food. If I had to say, the Kyu Tasty Popcorn Chicken had to be the favorite thing I was recommended and ordered. The flavor practically exploded in my mouth and in general was pleasant to eat throughout the entire meal. While the TV was a little glitchy, the atmosphere was nice and I could definitely see myself bringing my partner or even some friends here to enjoy some good asian food. Although, I am pretty sure they share their dim sum with the next door restaurant as they serve the exact same dim sum. But it still tastes good. Their sushi is shockingly wonderful given the location and their pork ramen is very very good as well. Our server was very attentive and had a good balance or being present when we needed him for anything and refilled our drinks as soon as the hit close to empty. The restaurant hidden hole in the wall but is quite cozy and nice on the inside. I am surprised I have not been here till recently and if you have not and like this type of food. My wife and I stopped here for lunch and were greeted by a simple but tasteful décor. The staff was pleasant and courteous, everything appeared to be well maintained and clean. Wee both chose variations of the bento lunch. My wife's tempura was perfectly cooked. The shrimp was tender and flavorful. The crab puff was one of the best we have encountered! There was enough crab in it to actually taste the crab! I had selected the pumpkin orange chicken. As with the tempura, perfectly cooked.
