This is usually our go to spot but after the last visit earlier this week I'll be trying some other places. First off the food is always great so thats never been an issue. Everytime I've gone, regardless of time its busy and the ambiance reflects that. Where the restaurant lost me on this visit was service. Not that great servers weren't working, we unfortunately did not get one of them. We got there around 5 and was seated promptly. Our first server was on the rude side, took almost 15 minutes to come to the table and had a hurry up attitude when he finally did. He disappeared a few times leaving us waiting to reorder and I'm guessing it was the end of his shift because another server took over after another long gap. I've worked in the industry and while im not condoning his behavior, maybe he just had a bad day and wanted to get out of there so I get it. The problem was the server that took over wasn't any better. He was more present in the sense he didn't disappear but we saw him standing around talking to other servers, leaving us waiving him down to reorder. We were rushed to finish as well, which I never had happen there. Neither of us were grazing and we were close to done anyway, but concidering the excessive initial wait, the first server being Houdini, the long lull during the turnover of servers, and the having to wave down the replacement server it was the cap to a bad service experience. Umami Sushi is a very good "Neighborhood Type...Not Morimoto Type" sushi restaurant located in the Centennial Area. You can order a la carte, take out, or ALL YOU CAN EAT here. Most people do the All You Can Eat ($25.95-$29.95). You will get your money's worth, service is amazing, and this place FILLS UP QUICK! We tried a bunch of different plates. Beef dishes were surprisingly tender and delicious. I thought the Korean chicken ran sweet but was still good. The only miss was the sweet potato in the tempura because it was slightly underdone but the onion ring was so tasty......Sushi was good and came with less rice than expected so you can pack more in. Some items are limited to one a person. We both really enjoyed the roll they call "A Little Tease." It's a little spicy and really delicious. I will get it every time I come here. They even offer you a little cup of ice cream at the end. This is a really great "Neighborhood Type" sushi restaurant. It fills up fast get there before opening. I wish they had this spot in LA. I came here for lunch, and for $25.95 per person, it was an amazing deal for AYCE. They had an upgrade option with a few premium items, but we decided it wasn't worth it for us. Their menu is huge, especially when it comes to rolls. One thing I really appreciated is that they let us do half rolls, which made it easier to try more things. Out of everything I had, my favorite nigiri pieces were the Super White Tuna and 300 Albacore. For appetizers, the Shishito Peppers were solid. For rolls, my top picks were: A Little Tease Roll Red Dragon Roll Lemon Salmon Roll Full Moon Roll I Love My Ass Roll I usually lean toward spicy rolls or anything with spicy tuna or salmon, and this place delivered. I tried around 15 different rolls, and the variety was great. Service was also on point--there was never a long wait for food, and even when we had a few leftovers, they didn't charge us. Used to love their sushi, but both service and food quality has gone down. The raw fish portions have shrunk and are not as fresh. It was warm and had a fishy smell and taste. The crab mix they place in their sushi rolls taste bad now, and looked so weird. I had to spit it out. I had to return them. First time this has ever happened here or any other Japanese restaurant. I learned they use MSG which definitely doesn't agree with me. The service was so slow (they weren't even full) and inconsistent. Other tables next to us who came after we did got their food quickly and we were still waiting for very simple dishes. They kept making mistakes sending us the wrong dishes. Word of warning, I can no longer recommend one of our favorite restaurants or this company, Dragon Factories. First to go was their KBBQ Hwaro restaurants, we stopped going there years ago due to poor quality of meats and other dishes (made me sick after eating there consistently). Umami has finally been conquered to tried out after years of trying to make it here today was the day where I tried the infamous sushi establishment! It was recommended by my two nursing friends/coworkers to try out so we had gone today for their lunch special AYCE for $26.95! We were a group of 8 who arrived at 11:30am so 30 minutes following their opening time. They were already packed and busy, however please be reminded of any party bigger than 6 that EVERYONE needs to be in attendance in order to be seated. From the service to ambiance really caught my eye and made my first time experience memorable because our waitress was absolutely amazing and extremely attentive to all of our needs! I'm a big nigri fan the quality of fish was great, but the rice ratio was small and not much so that's a minor detail that I knocked off just based off preference. I totally appreciate my time spent at Umami so whenever you're in the northwest side of town specifically off Durango and 215 this is THE spot for you just check out and give a shot because I'd highly recommend! We came here as a party of four on New Year's Day for dinner without reservation and were told that the wait would be two hours, but we ended up waiting for only 50 minutes. Coming from the Bay Area where there are several AYCE sushi restaurants, I have to admit that this spot is so much better than home in terms of taste and price. The only reason I took one star away is because of the service. Even though we sat at a table near the entrance and the bar, we felt like it was really difficult to get our waiter's attention. This is gotta be the most authentic Japanese restaurant I have been to! The tables are pretty much small here especially if you have a party of big people. The atmosphere is appropriate for this setting and really love the dark one. I believe that this is the closest authenticity this restaurant is compared to ones in Japan though I have never been to Japan before. The wait is very long because we have a party of more than 8 people. When we got seated, it was very crowded due to table sizes as stated earlier. We ordered plentiful of dishes, but keep in mind that you may need to order again and again since not all the food can be on the table in just one sitting. The food is pretty delicious though. There are no entrees like bento boxes and lunch plates, but in return, you get more authentic food. Not sure if I am correct, but I think culturally when eating sushi itself, we don't eat rice as a side dish or other side dishes. We ordered in a few rounds and people I sit with can't stop. Goes to show how popular the restaurant and also how good the food is. I didn't expect this restaurant to have a unique touch and thought it be like any other Japanese restaurant. We tried Umami while visiting Vegas and it did NOT disappoint. We ordered the rainbow roll, tempura roll, and crunch roll -- every single one was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The fish on the rainbow roll was especially fresh and buttery, and the crunch roll had the perfect texture without being overly heavy. The house salad was crisp with a delicious dressing, and they even had great options for my son who doesn't like raw fish -- the chicken teriyaki was a hit and cooked perfectly. Came to Umami on a Wednesday night with a group of friends and stuffed ourselves silly with AYCE sushi during their Happy Hour! We left feeling satisfied for sure. Located in the shopping plaza off of Durango, Umami is known for their all-you-can-eat sushi. But more enticing was they also had an all-you-can-eat HAPPY HOUR. This was about $20 per person and allowed for us to ordered almost anything off the menu. The only things we weren't allowed to order were items labeled "One Time All Day Only" like the Hamachi Kama, Uni nigiri, and no-rice options. The inside is bright but cozy with K-pop blasting on the speakers. My personal highlights: No Name handroll, albacore nigiri, lemon seared salmon nigiri, scallop nigiri, ikura nigiri. Service is pretty good! From our first encounter at the front desk, to Aris (sp?) taking our orders, to the rest of the staff filling our waters and handing out everything we ordered. Staff here is helpful, friendly, and quick to take action. There is lots of variety - even for non-seafood eaters so they can also benefit from the Happy Hour prices. The SO, who has an aversion to sushi/seafood in general, enjoyed the non-fishy stuff like bulgogi fries, kalbi, gyoza, veg tempura, and meat skewers. This review is breaking my heart... especially since I don't often give one star reviews but this has to be said. I've been to umami on MULTIPLE occasions. Service has always been courteous though sometimes slow- but that doesn't bother me because the benefits have always outweighed the long wait times. It's a hip restaurant with decent sushi so while not stellar, it is worth a trip. Well... that was until my last trip. I've never sent seafood back in a restaurant. The shellfish tasted so bad that we actually sent it back. Little did we know... it was too late before we ingested pathogens... We ALL got horrible food poisoning!!!! I'm beyond words right now. Umami is probably in my top three AYCE spots in town. I've been going here for years and it is always fantastic. The quality I'm of the fish is great and they don't overload the rice. The nigiri was fantastic. They had a wide variety of options and everything we got was delicious. The rolls were solid as well and they had a nice selection to choose from. The seating is very close so you can hear others conversation. The parking is typically all taken so be prepared to part a little far. Most of the staff is nice, no one is rude but sometimes you would get a waiter who is non verbal or non attendant. Dinner price has gone up a bit ($29.95 and $25.95 for lunch) but still a killer deal for the quality and freshness of the menu items. Also keep in mind some items are dinner only. I've settled into a few must order items every time I'm here but did notice a few items that looked new. One of things I like is that you can order a half roll so you don't fill up eating the full 8 pieces. Stopped in here yesterday with my daughter for lunch. Staff was awesome, we were seated quickly and everyone was welcoming. It was busy, pretty much every table was seated but the service was quick. The atmosphere was light, everyone was nice and smiley. The food was really good as well. I forgot to take pictures of what was ordered but my daughter absolutely loved her salmon roll. I had a couple of the dragon rolls and they were delicious. Spicy tuna roll was great as well. Pricing was on par with many other AYCE restaurants.
