It was a…read moresurprise outing for me because there was an Earth Wind & Fire tribute performance by a live band that night. The hostess told me to have a seat and relax, since it was a surprise for me and all would be taken care of. Although we were among the first tables to arrive, I watched more and more tables placing their food orders. I went to the bar twice to ask if my order to be place and was told that someone would come to my table. After an uncomfortable wait, our order was finally taken. It was 45 minutes before our food arrived and my order was incomplete. My wife's order hadn't arrived at all. I ordered the Golden Fried Perch which was supposed to come with cut fries and grilled corn on the cob. I asked for mashed potatoes as an alternative. The fish was a very small, overcooked portion which wasn't tasty at all. I had to ask for utensils, as well as tartar sauce. The tartar sauce never came. My friend went back to the kitchen to get it for me. The corn was not "on the cob", but rather in a bowl was pretty dry. Meanwhile, we waited and waited for my wife's order of wings. She eventually told the server to cancel the wings and was informed that they were on their way, at no charge. My friend told her that he didn't expect to pay for my meal either (he was treating). We were also disappointed because the group only performed for about an hour, even though they were listed for much longer. One member showed up about 15 minutes after the show started. Many customers were upset because they felt cheated out of the money they paid for the show. (Just recently, the restaurant announced an encore presentation with free entry for those who had tickets for the original show) Although the wings were delicious, I was extremely disappointed in my meal, particularly the fish. I usually assume that it's an isolated event, but, coupled with the other miscues, I didn't have a very good time. Here's hoping that things pick up in the near future.

And we got there at 9pm. In addition, the venue was old and needed an immediate update. The food was so so. Like who wants to buy food when you had to pay so much to get in. Drinks were pricey. Definitely a rip-off restaurant. Will not go again. I felt like hiring chef Ramsay for them to help them have a complete make over.

It had been years since my last visit, so I was excited to come back. One thing that caught us off guard was the ordering process. We bounced between inside and the patio a couple of times trying to figure out where to check in, get menus, and place an order. Eventually we learned that orders are placed at the bar rather than through traditional table service. Once we figured it out, everything went smoothly, but it wasn't immediately obvious. For drinks, we ordered a Green Tea Shot and a Green Tea Cocktail. Both were strong, well-made, and exactly what I'd expect from Union Café. Food was more hit-or-miss. Years ago, the Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla was my go-to order. This version arrived hot, cheesy, and loaded with filling, but the chicken seemed very different from what I remembered. The texture reminded me of canned chicken, and it lacked the seasoning and flavor that made the older version memorable. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the quesadilla I came back hoping for. I also ordered the half Apple Orchard Salad. It looked great and included apples, feta, candied pecans, dried cranberries, and raspberry vinaigrette. The ingredients worked together fine, but I wouldn't personally pay $6 for the half or $12 for the full again. It felt overpriced for what it delivered. The standout item was the Loaded Tots. Crispy, hot, cheesy, topped with bacon and chipotle crema, and easily the best thing we ordered. No complaints there. Overall, Union Café still shines when it comes to atmosphere, drinks, patio seating, and community presence. I just wish the food had lived up to the memories that brought me back in the first place.

This year, the rooftop bar had some expanded seating, which was a nice perk (for a private event at least, I don't know how accessible it might be otherwise). The drink selection is kind of limited if you don't arrange for cocktails, etc, and the bartenders can be hit or miss. This year we had a couple of great people mixing drinks for our event. I'm not much for the bar scene, so I can't give an opinion on a regular night, but they did really well with the event.

The "featured drinks" consisted of one bottle each of Monkey 47 whisky and some no-name very young-tasting bourbon...THAT WAS IT. The bar was open, of course, with a pair of fantastic bartenders, but the prices were ASTRONOMICAL for such an event. The ownership and/or management seemed to be disinterested (at best) in ensuring the quality of the event. I have had some good experiences in the past at Callahan's, and I hope this is not indicative of the place overall, but it was extremely disappointing.
