Prior to this experience, the only time I've spent in Angleton was at the courthouse. No, I'm not a criminal. For jury duty of course. But all things must change and I checked out Umi Sushi & Ramen for dinner on a Sunday evening. Parking is easy in their complimentary lot that they share with a bunch of other businesses. Service (4.5/5): We were seated at a booth in the corner and our waitress made sure to check on us regularly. A little too much for my liking but over-service is certainly better than under-service. She was friendly too so I appreciate the effort. Ambiance (3/5): Your typical neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Cozy yet unremarkable. Which isn't a bad thing. I wasn't looking for fine dining. Drinks (4.5/5): I'm a bit predictable when it comes to my drinking habits at Japanese restaurants. Give me a hot house sake and a Japanese beer. Rinse repeat. Umi delivered here. And for a good price. Happy camper. Food (3/5): This is where I was wanting a little more. We started off with the edamame as an appetizer. It was a bit bland. It needed a little salt. Easy fix. From there, I went with a specialty sushi roll called the Japanese lasagna. How can I say no to a dish like that? While the name was fantastic, the roll was a little underwhelming. And I was still hungry. So I ordered the tonkotsu ramen. I've had this classic ramen dish many of times and I've seen it done at a high level. Umi's attempt is mediocre. The broth hasn't had the care that is needed for a dish like this. Nor was the pork chasu up to par. Not a bad dish, but again, underwhelming. Despite the quantity of food I ordered, the price was acceptable. At least there's that. I have no idea why this place has more than four stars. We came here tonight and ordered the spicy garlic edamame. It was so salty it was hard to eat. My husband got the ginger dressing salad, and he said the ginger dressing just tasted like thousand island dressing with added ginger. The sushi we ordered was a Philly roll (a staple anytime we get sushi). My husband loved it, and it was the best roll we had. The second roll we ordered was the red dragon. It had no flavor aside from the jalapeño heat. It just had the textures of sushi. It was just boring. The third Kirin roll. It was decent. On the side I always get teriyaki sauce, and this one was inedible. It was just so salty and tasted mostly like soy sauce with added sauce. The food was okay. We came in on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty. We sat down and shared this plate. Their server let me know that the salmon had just got gotten there that day, but the shrimp had been there for a few days. Th salmon was pretty dry and the shrimp was a little chewy. Saw this place and pulled in on a hungry whim. NO REGRETS!! Umi did not disappoint. I had a Kirin, Large House Saki, Seaweed Salad, and 3 specialty rolls....check was $60!! EPIC pricing for good quality sushi/Japanese fare. Check my pictures. Very impressed with the Seaweed salad (so often at small places like this it's slimy and not fresh, but NOT HERE!), and I also love when the Seaweed salad is laid over a bed of shredded cucumber. The rolls were great and I couldn't believe the expanse of their sushi roll menu...if only my stomach had more capacity! Great service and friendly staff. From the hostess, to my server, and even the sushi chef, everyone was all-smiles, polite and communicative. I felt like I wasn't in Angleton, TX to be honest. So excited to see Angleton get a sushi/ramen restaurant! Especially one as good as this! I'm an Angleton girl born and raised who has been living in Austin the last 7 years. In the summers, Sushi is one of my go-to foods, and it never made sense to me that there was such a large absence of it down here with all the great seafood we have and our proximity to the coast (Southern Brazoria Country definitely has a leg up on Austin in the seafood department). Enter Umi Sushi. Walking in, you can't even tell that the building was the old Radio Shack. It's sleek, it's sophisticated, the booths are big enough to fit comfortably into- what more could you want? I went around 1 o'clock on a Friday and service was fast and super friendly! The sushi list can be a little overwhelming, so it took me a while to figure out what I wanted, but my waitress (Kiddy, I believe) was able to help me decide between a few of the roles after I asked her opinion. Next time I go, I'm going to bring someone along to justify an appetizer- I'm always a fan of gyoza and crab puffs, and garlic edamame sounds like something RIGHT up my alley. I ended up getting the California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Spider Roll. Yes- 3 rolls. Don't judge. After placing my order, Kiddy came and told me that 2 of my rolls were part of the lunch special- meaning they were cheaper AND I had a choice of salad or soup. I chose the miso soup (forgetting I'm not really a fan of miso soup- oops!) Not even 10 minutes later my rolls came out and oh man- they were good! The crab in the California Roll was so flavorful, the spicy tuna definitely had a kick to it, and the Spider Roll was crunchy and delicious (ESPECIALLY with the eel sauce- YUM). I'm so happy this place is here and I'm planning to frequent it whenever I'm in town. I definitely want to try more of the sushi, and once it gets colder, I'm so on board for Ramen. Their lunch special is incredible- 2 rolls and a choice of soup or salad for $8.95! That's the price of ONE roll from a grocery-store sushi department, and this is freshly made! My main advice (and the cost of the 1 star) is the menu. The lunch special wasn't listed anywhere on there, and for being such a great deal, it absolutely should. I actually looked for it and didn't see it anywhere. Additionally, there was a key on the menu for the cooked sushi, but it was never actually next to any of the items. I know a lot of people's reservation about sushi comes from the idea of eating raw fish. I think clearly marking the cooked items would be a huge help. Again- really loved this place. First off, I am sure that I will be upgrading this review in the near future, this is a brand new restaurant and they are still trying to get everyone trained and up to speed. For dinner I had some miso soup, some salmon Nigiri,yellow tail Nigiri, Unagi Nigiri and a Spider roll. The cut on the Nigiri was a little rough with some heavy tendons running through a few pieces of fish, my biggest disappointment which they fixed very quickly was the spider roll and the fact that they should put eel sauce on top of it which is not a usual thing in most restaurants though I know more and more people will put eel sauce on anything, but graciously they made me another spider roll free of eel sauce. The staff seemed to be learning the menu and getting their workflow down but everyone was extremely nice and gracious and helpful and I'm sure this will become a mainstay not only for me but for the people of Angleton read more

The waitstaff was super nice, and the food was fantastic. There wasn't a single thing that I didn't enjoy. Still cautious about the sushi I ordered ramen, and it was amazing! The best tasting ramen I've ever had. My friend forced me to try the sushi and it was, melt-in-your-mouth delicious. So, arrived for lunch Friday with my daughters and ordered vegetable tempura while the rest of my party ordered a total of seven rolls. Miso soups and salads that come with the lunch specials arrived, and then all the rolls. Waiting on the tempura... Waiting... Waiting... Waiting... After an additional 15 minutes, I asked if it was going to be much longer, just make it to go (so I could it some of it w/ the family and take the rest)... Waiting... Waiting... Waiting... After another 10 minutes and everyone else was through eating, I just asked them to cancel it. I told the server that it was ok to charge me something for the miso soup & salad that I did eat, because it's the right thing to do. This was totally unacceptable since there were only one other person dining alone and one couple in there the entire time I was there. I did notice that six separate to-go orders were prepared and placed on the staging table next to me while I waited on my one plate. The ticket came and... $3.95 for a tiny bowl of salad & $2.50 for a tiny miso soup. $6.45 for nothing really, and I still had to leave hungry after sitting there for over an hour. I went ahead and paid it, tipped my server as I always do, and told her I know it wasn't her fault, but that it was obviously the kitchen's. Umi Sushi is one of my favorite Sushi eateries. The atmosphere is relaxing, spacious, it still smells so good and mouth-watering. Staff are friendly, attentive and fast-paced. They always seem to have it together and I've never had to sit and wonder when I'm going to get a refill or my food. My ultimate favorite is Pink Lady... Snow crab, shrimp tempura, avocado, and cream cheese wrapped in a soybean paper and drizzled with spicy mayonnaise and unagi sauce. The serving sizes are great. They are reasonably priced. Food is fresh and made whenever you order. Rather, it's takeout or dine in, the quality of the food and service is top notch. I definitely recommend Umi Sushi! read more

This is a super new restaurant in Angleton and I'm impressed! First sushi bar to open in town which I think is pretty awesome. My aunt and I walked in and ordered some rolls to go and they got them out quickly for us which was very convenient. They were delicious! I highly recommend the Dynamite roll and the Alaskan roll! Those were my favorites of the four rolls we ordered. Dynamite is fried (because who here in Texas DOESN'T like everything fried?!) and then the Alaskan is so yummy with all the delicious salmon. The inside of the restaurant was super cute too and we decided we have to come back to enjoy dinner inside. I really love how they decided to open up in Angleton because there's not been a sushi bar in town ever for as long as I can remember. read more
