We absolutely love this place! It's our go to for sushi whether it's casual or a special night! We highly recommend this restaurant!

First time trying this place on a Sunday for lunch. My wife had been here before, but like most people, she doesn't have the sushi, just the rolls or teriyaki plate. I ordered the Nigerian mix. My plate arrived before the miso soup and salad, which was strange having just placed my order not a few minutes earlier. My plate was missing any ginger or Wasabi. After I asked the waitress for some, it took another 5 minutes to get it and it was not busy at all. My first bite tasted funny. The fish was room temperature and mushy as if it was sitting out for a while. It was not fresh. The Wasabi was not hot at all and she only gave me about a half tablespoon of small ginger pieces. I decided to give it another try with more Wasabi and ginger (I finished off the ginger at this point). The second was just as bad. My mistake was when I decided to try again one last time. After a long wait for more ginger I took a bit of what looked like tuna. This time the taste was unmistakable. The fish tasted rancid. Smelling the plate closely there was a distinct sweet rancid odor coming from the fish. I was polite but did let them know when I left that the fish was bad and that I was probably going to be sick. I will not be going back and cannot recommend this place after seeing the other similar reviews. read more

Very rude server lady. All we asked for was to substitute the California rolls for extra salad on the bento box and she had a huge problem and proceeded to lecture us about the inconvenience. Been coming here for 5yrs. Will not be back again. read more

TONS OF ROLLS!! Sunday was my first visit to Umi Sushi and my boyfriend and I had a great experience. The staff was friendly, the rolls were delicious, and the place was very clean. This place was o.k. The menu is huge and there is a lot to chose from. I asked for chili paste and got Sriracha. The sushi is consistently good, especially for the price (select rolls 50% off at certain times of the weekdays). I like that as far as restaurants go, they're not out to gouge you on cold drink prices. I usually get hot tea to go with my sushi here, but ordered a soda for a change & was surprised that it wasn't the usual restaurant price of $2.95 or more (they charge $1.50). Called ahead of time to place an order, the server over the phone was already rude with attitude. She said the order will be ready in 40 mins. I got there exactly 40 mins, my order was never made. I waited an hour for my order which I had call over the phone for! What is the point of taking orders over the phone if they will not be ready in a timely manner! The sushi chefs were taking their sweet time! The rude server was being friendly with the other two customers who had take out orders and was telling them thanks for being patient but I had waited over an hour and when my food was finally ready, she placed them on the table without saying a single word! I had to ask her if everything was there and she just responded yes. There was no, thanks for being patient or sorry for taking so long! Will no longer be supporting this sushi restaurant with shitty service! That's why there was no tips being left, with shitty attitude and service, you don't deserve it! If I could leave no stars I would, sadly I'll have to place one! read more

I'm reading some of the reviews about how great their sushi was and I just didn't think so. I ordered a $14 scallop roll that had NO scallop in it whatsoever, was as slipping and terribly out together as could be and was literally mostly cucumber. $14! I was expecting a decent roll for that, it was awful. My friends ordered about 20 different rolls and not one appealed to the eye and no one said theirs was great. BAD SUSHI. Umi sushi has the sweetest staff. Every time we come in the owner (or who I think is the owner) greets our table and jokes with us. She's so sweet and jokes around with us all the time. The food is excellent and the price is spot on. The rolls are a good size for the price and they don't skimp on anything. They make it just the way you want it. Also, they have a vast roll selection with pictures so you know exactly what you're getting. I have yet to be disappointed by a roll. I think this place gets overshadowed by sushi garden a lot. Yes, sushi garden is delicious and most people from Modesto are used to going there, but this place definitely deserves a try. It might just change your mind! read more

I went here with a party of 12. The place is nice and the tables are set so you don't bump into anyone when you have to get up. The 2 ladies that helped us kinda got mixed up with ordering. 1 person got left out and 2 ordereds got messed up. But the food is very good and made in a timely manner. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked. And there are free refills on soda. And since they messed up our order. We got free ice cream. Over all the place is well worth the visit. They also have cooked food incase you don't like uncooked fish. read more

Made a last minute decision to give Umi Sushi a try over Sushi Garden at my Sister's recommendation. We were greeted with warm ambiance but that was about it. We ordered gyoza, tempura and two rolls. We were so hungry that we prepared the soy sauce/wasabi mixture as soon as it hit the table. As I was mixing, I noticed that the consistency was oddly thin. Not sure if that was due to diluted soy sauce or wasabi that was just plain unrecognizable. Things picked up speed in a downhill direction from there... The rolls were made with refrigerated rice and pre-cooked tempura. In short, the dinner was not edible. When it comes to sushi, stick with your gut and go with what you know to be FRESH and DELICIOUS. read more

Mostly rolls but they are GOOD sushi rolls. They do offer sashimi but I haven't ordered this yet. Service is very fast and there are plenty of attentive staff members. The sushi here was so yummy. There is a GIANT selection of rolls, almost too much, makes it hard to decide. They also offer really a good bento box selection. My only complaint is that the waitstaff seemed pretty confused, maybe they were having an off night? The service was not bad, but they didn't seem to understand our questions or bill. This sushi restaurant is absolutely amazingly good. I go to other sushi restaurants now and it is not the same. They have so many different rolls to choose from and I have to come here at least once a week. The staff is really friendly especially one of the girls who wears glasses. If you see her, request her as your sever. She is always on top of it. The ONLY negative thing I have to say is that they completely stopped there happy hr which was half off selected rolls. When they had this special I would come 2 sometimes even 3 times a week. I'm really disappointed they discontinued it but other than that this place is GREAT! read more

This place has gone seriously downhill... The first time I was there it was pretty good. But each time after that it got worse and worse. We ordered $1 saki bomb which they would not let us drop ourselves.. And when we ordered a second round he took and brought back the same cups and said he thought he got them back to the right person. The ice cream and Mochi balls were dried out and freezer burnt. Waiter then argued with us when we sent them back. Rolls were missing ingredients. And on the last (and now final) visit the fish was chewy and not at all fresh.. To the point where I was worried we might get food poisoning. Won't be going back.. Too bad. read more
