Had just gotten into town and needed a quick bite to eat. We were in the mood for sushi, so we walked here from our hotel. Wasn't expecting much BUT so glad that we chose it! It's a small shop with a modest menu that makes top notch nigiri with the freshest, most delicious rice (a la Jiro Dreams of Sushi). Fish nearly melted on my tongue -- such high quality. The owner is extremely kind and managed to juggle several customers at once. We accidentally left our phone on the counter, and he ran blocks to catch up to return it to us. Umi a place by the beach, sells sushi, sake and beer. If you want some good quick sushi you should pay them a visit. Location is small so be warned if you have a big party you will be waiting. The staff is wonderful and the decorations remind from my times in Japan. The food is mostly sushi but have some Korean dishes; I'll try next time. Nothing fancy but the fish is fresh tasting and rice is delicious. I'm happy with this place, gives me excuse to go to the beach now. I recommend to all sushi lovers. read more

I had passed this place many times when at Yorktown beach and never had the opportunity to try them out. The place is small, maybe 10 seats? But don't let the size deter you. The ambiance is quite nice and was great for a quick bite to eat. I sat in front of the sushi making station to get a good look at my options. The fish was fresh and tasty. The owners were friendly and we chatted for a bit after I finished my meal. They also have a good selection of plum wine. Based on other reviews I want to comment that: There are no more paper plates. They appear to have lunch specials for under $15. read more

Do not come here for the Teriyaki chicken, it is not work over 10$ it is now 16$+ tax they now microwave the chicken and tastes so bland that I wanted to spit it out. My girlfriend paid for it so I ate it but it was disgusting. read more

EXTREMELY disappointing. The decor and ambience are the only saving grace to this abomination. I arrived on a weekday for lunch. One female "chef" was behind the counter. I ordered the reverse maki tuna roll and salmon and tuna sashimi. My friend ordered the bulgogi. I watched the chef pull my fish out of a freezer where the tuna appeared to have been for quite some time as the color was a deep red, almost burgundy color indicative of overly frozen fish. My friends bulgogi was pulled from the same freezer, already prepared in a bowl and placed in a MICROWAVE! You'd be better off with supermarket sushi and bulgogi from the frozen foods section. There was so much potential for this place given that there are two fairly delicious, fresh seafood restaurants within seconds of UMI. I was shocked at the poor quality of the food. Seriously, the BEST and FRESHEST sushi I ever had! The place is really small, with a couple of seats by the bar, so we ate in the outside patio next to the building. I ordered the chirashi plate, which had plenty of tuna, salmon, white tuna, yellow tail, and octopus. Never heard of white tuna, but it LITERALLY melts in your mouth. I would have never expected my best sushi experience to be served on paper plates in Yorktown by a quaint beach area. Too bad we are from out of town visiting the American Revolution Museum down the road, otherwise we'd be frequenting this place often! read more

This little beachside restaurant is a delight! It is very small though so if you have a big group, I wouldn't recommend it. In fact, if you want to sit at a table, don't come bc it's got only about 10 bar seats....but the food is great and well worth it The sushi was fresh, and the cooked dish was excellent as well. Sushi on paper/plastic plates. Not even a soy sauce ceramic presented. Green tea made to order in a Mr. Coffee machine. ??? $26.00 (at lunch) for 2 pieces salmon nigiri. 2 pieces of yellowtail which had very obviously been frozen. And 1 eel/avocado roll. Quality of the food about a 3 out of 10. Way, way, way overpriced. And again, on a paper plate!!! Talk about a blown opportunity?! Little cute place and then sushi on a disposable plate?! Save your money and more importantly your palate and go right next door and order a piece of fish and look out over the water at Water Street Grille. And I've never even eaten at Water Street Grille, but has to be a far better experience. read more

This is a lovely, but small sushi bar (it seats 9 at a time), with a lovely couple running the business. They also have a Japanese restaurant in Hampton. The sushi and sashimi was extremely fresh and their sushi rice was the best I have had in years! Very large selection of sake and plum wines, which I will try next time. We ordered the Chirashi special and #1 combo (tuna/avacado roll and 2 pcs each of salmon and tuna). Great portion size for 2 people, super fresh, clean and melted in our mouths.... so good! Great, personable service and easy to have a conversation with the chef (she added an herb/plant from her garden to our plate, which had a nice taste, and helps cleanse the liver). Would've loved to sit inside at one of the bar seats, but had our dogs so sat at the shaded tables behind the building and ate our sushi to-go. Small, but quaint building with welcoming decor and atmosphere, and impressive sake selection for sale. Recommended for sure! read more

I have been in Yorktown these past of months and love the area. I decided to stop in here for lunch today and at first I was a little worried because it is small and not for a large group of people. All I can say is that the food was AMAZING! If I had a group of 30 people I would bring them here, the wonderful lady working was so wonderful and sweet I just wanted to hug her. I will probably go back her as much as I can now! It was clean, fresh food made quickly in front of you, I could bring children if I wanted or go there by myself or on a date night as a couple. 5 stars for me! read more
