I came in with my family on a Saturday afternoon, and even though it was pretty busy, the food came out quickly. It's an all-you-can-eat setup where you order from the menu, and small plates are brought to your table. Just a heads-up: don't order more than you can eat, as there's a charge for over-ordering. We ordered a couple of rolls and tried most of the appetizers--everything was delicious, and we left absolutely stuffed. Tonight was my second time to eat at Umiya on Germantown. This was delicious, just like last time. Our server, Michelle B, and owner Vicky, are wonderful and welcoming. The exterior, entrance, and inside of the restaurant are decorated consistently and in a fun way. There are plenty of booths for people who like that. I like chairs, and everyone raves over how comfortable the chairs are. All the food was super tasty. My friend got the chicken hibachi, and it was cooked just right. Let me start by saying that this would've been a one star review had it not been for Vicky's efforts in making things right for us. We were really happy to see another Asian restaurant open in Memphis and were very excited to try it. We arrived around 6:40 PM for dinner and the hostess told us there would be a 20-30 minute wait. We put our name down and waited. After 30 mins or so, our table still wasn't ready, so I checked with the hostess. She told me to give her 10 more minutes. Another 30 mins go by and still nothing so I walked up to the front desk again to check the status. That's when I saw our name had been crossed off the waitlist. I asked the hostess why our names were crossed off when we hadn't been called, and she instantly got defensive, saying it wasn't her who crossed it out. I replied that it didn't matter who crossed it out. The fact is, we'd been waiting for over an hour at this point. She then had the audacity to say, "You don't have to wait, you can leave if you want to." Just WOW. She then proceeded to tell me to "calm down" when I got frustrated with her attitude. Finally, the restaurant manager, Vicky, came over. She was immediately apologetic and made sure we were seated right away. Despite being swamped, she personally attended to us and checked up on us throughout dinner, which really helped turn things around. Like I said, if it weren't for Vicky turning this into a positive experience, we would never go back and would just stick to Sushi Kingdom. That hostess, however, should not be working in the service industry if she's going to treat customers with such a nasty attitude and disrespect. Mistakes happen, I would have been understanding if she had simply apologized and tried to fix the situation. But she chose to deflect blame, get defensive, and escalate the situation with her dismissive and condescending remarks. Telling a customer to "leave if you want to" is completely unacceptable, especially after we'd waited patiently for over an hour. Anyway, the food was actually very good, maybe slightly better than Sushi Kingdom for certain dishes. My favorites were the salmon sashimi, hibachi steak, and snow crab salad. The matcha ice cream dessert was also very tasty. We'll likely give this place another try in the future and hopefully a smoother experience next time. read more

Well, FINALLY a good, new sushi spot in Cordova! AYCE restaurants usually have a sort of cafeteria like aura around them (not to point fingers or anything) , but Umiya boasts a really beautiful interior, setting the mood for a nice evening. It seems the entire staff waits on you, bringing food, condiments and water. The sushi, overall, is also very good, but I have a few constructive considerations that could make Umiya even better. Firstly, give your customers something to write their orders on. It doesn't matter if it's a dry erase board or a little paper sheet, give us something to keep track of what we are ordering. Ginger and Wasabi are not automatically served with the sushi. I had to request it. I was brought a 2 oz soufflé cup absolutely overflowing with wasabi, and a cup of ginger dressing. Weird. Why not ask the guests when the order if they would like it, then serve a reasonable amount to the table? I hope the ginger dressing was just a miscommunication. Umiya is still relatively new and has just a couple of kinks to work out, but I look forward to this being our regular sushi spot. read more
