This is a long review, but I hope it's worth the read. I've been coming to Sektor Corona for 8 months and have enjoyed every minute. Prior to that, I trained at another BJJ school in Corona for about 5 years. A friend told me about Sektor Corona after it opened in February and I decided to try a class. I was impressed. I had reservations about switching schools. I made a lot of friends and had good relationships with the instructors and families at my old school. Leaving a place of comfort is always difficult. My biggest concern was for my 12 year old son who was also training at my old school and enjoying it. I didn't want to uproot him and disrupt his training. But Sektor offered a good reasonable monthly rate for my son and I. Logistically, it was also alot closer to home. I reluctantly made the switch and have not looked back since. It has truly been a blessing for us. First, you get high level instruction at Sektor. The owners/instructors Albert and Spencer are excellent - they know their stuff and teach it well. They are very technical, thorough, and explain things very simply. Second, their instruction is very personalized. Although I really liked my old school, the one knock on it was it stuck to a very rigid "curriculum." There is something to be said about having a curriculum - it instills structure and consistency. But when it's too rigid, it can stifle innovation and creativity. At Sektor, they have a looser curriculum and their instruction is much more personalized. Albert and Spencer are constantly mindful of the needs of all their students, from the new white belt to more experienced students. They help you with your strengths and weaknesses. For those with more experience, they explore your interests and help you work on and advance your game. This is not to say their class instruction is rudderless and a free for all. They still have an agenda, but they balance it with their students' needs and interests. I'm learning techniques and styles at Sektor which I probably would not have learned at my old school. Third, Sektor fosters a family friendly environment. Spencer and Albert know BJJ can play a huge positive role in the family. BJJ can truly be a family sport because it's more fun when family members train together. Albert and Spencer work really well with kids and have a great children's program. Since switching to Sektor, I was able to convince my wife to sign up. She was apprehensive at first because she was nervous about the idea of having to grapple against men who are bigger and stronger than her. But Spencer and Albert worked with her and really made her feel comfortable. She's has no regrets and has loved BJJ ever since. And since we have a reasonable monthly rate at Sektor (compared to other schools), we could afford to pay 3 tuitions. Whereas at my old school, it would have been cost prohibitive. It's great that my wife, my son, and I have a hobby that we all share and love together. Fourth, not to sound like a cliche but Albert and Spencer are trustworthy people. You might be asking what does trust have to do with BJJ. It's more important than you think because BJJ is a long slow journey (10 year average to obtain black belt), and therefore involves a long term commitment. With long term commitments you need trust. I have seen numerous occasions when prospective clients would walk into the Sektor and inquire about signing up. I would hear Spencer talk to them, answer all their questions, suggest they try a class at Sektor as well as other schools, and then advise them to pick the school that works best for them. Hearing this alone should convince you that they want what's best for you. He does not push their school and pressure you to sign with them just so they can increase enrollment and extract money from you. Heck, Albert is a medical doctor, so you know he's not doing this just for the money. They do it for the passion and for teaching BJJ. Yes, they are still running a business and are still trying to turn a profit, but more importantly they realize they are ambassadors for BJJ. You can see their passion play out in their classes and instruction. Their goal is to see you thrive in BJJ. For this reason, I really trust their motivations and decisions. In the 6 months my family has been there, we've found our relationship with them to be more then just business or mere instructional, it had been one of mentorship and friendship. The instructors here are absolutely phenomenal. I've trained at 3 different gyms down in San Diego, and I can honestly say the atmosphere and instruction at Sektor is something you cannot find anywhere else. Spencer is an extremely technical jiu jitsu practitioner whose wizardry becomes apparent when you roll with him. He does a great job explaining the step by step approach of every technique he teaches. However, my favorite part learning under Spencer is how passionate he is about the sport, and the infectious nature of his passion. Mark my words, he will get you addicted to Jiu Jitsu the same way he did to me! Albert is also a very technical instructor who has a very methodical approach to his game. It's great to learn from him because he gives you a chance to learn from your mistakes, and has a lot of patience. I have not met a more respectful sparring partner and instructor. The atmosphere is very family friendly yet still keeps the traditional Jiu Jitsu Gym values. Overall this place is a 10/10 and I would not want any other gym to be my home. Great place for the whole family to learn jiu-jitsu. My 7 and 10 year old boys have trained jiu-jitsu for approximately 3 yrs and they love it. Spencer is very good with kids and my boys really like learning from him. He is patient and works with the boys to help sharpen the skills that they have known for years. Albert is also very patient and laid back. They both have really easy going personalities, which makes training and learning fun. I'm a big believer in doing your homework before picking a place. Spencer is a brown belt under Gabriel Costa and Sean Roberts at Ralph Gracie Chino Hills/Sektor Jiu-Jtsu. They are both high-level black belts. Albert Khait is a black belt under Bruno Fernandes, who is a high level competitor and world renowned BJJ instructor (gave black belt to George St-Pierre). This place is a brand new building in a new commercial/residential complex. The location is extremely clean and safe, which is good for women and children. I train here and the Chino Hills location. At this location, Spencer and Albert are both very approachable and great instructors. Most of the lessons taught I've been able to apply immediately to my game, which is nice. If you are new to jiu jitsu i recommend doing it for at least 3 months because it can be a learning curve. This is a great place to learn Jiu Jitsu. I just started and got recommended here by a couple of my friends who have been training for awhile. They checked out all the gyms around here and said this was by far the best one. Even though I'm a beginner, I was able to pick it up relatively quickly and already see rapid improvement. The instruction is great, the training is very technical, and it's a very fun atmosphere while learning how to defend yourself. I was skeptical of being the "new guy" at the gym but the instructors and members welcomed me like I was one of their own. I never felt out of place. The instructors are always positive and encourage a productive environment. Spencer teaches most often but there are many other black belts that come in to teach and show a different perspective. Sektor is a great place. We have three boys that play hockey. We were looking for something else to try during thier season, so we stopped by Sektor to check it out. After the first session my boys were hooked. They love going to classes during the week after school. Classes are flexible and the training is top notch.
